When I first heard this song as a teenager, I liked the tune but did not understand the words of the song. Now many years later, those words have opened up for me. The sweet sad memories of love lost whirls around and around in my head like the windmills.
Probably the best version of this beautiful melody as sung by Petula Clarke. With apologies to One of my favourite singers Barbara Streisand Dick Tynan Dublin Ireland 2021
Pet has been my favorite female vocalist sing her "My Love" LP back in in '66. A major world-wide star for decades and yet, to millions of people she's just "the girl who sang 'Downtown'." Great song... great singing.
That Bob is what set's her apart from all the other female vocalist that I have ever heard. Her cyristal clear vocals and absolutely perfect diction and the unique way she puts her songs over to her fans and audiences are something that I have ever seen Petula Clark do. And that is why Bob for me she is easily THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME. Bar Non
@@bobdereimer5210 Thank you Bob yes my Kin are absolutely fine and dandy and of course I hope that yours are the same. Hope you get back onto Facebook soon. Petula Clark for a Damehood.
This is Petula at her very best, just awesome. From he Happy Heart album- and the rest of it is also up to standard. dates back to 1969- but timeless for a quality song and a quality singer.
Could not have said it any better myself Thomas Outt. Your comment is word for word correct and I totally and utterly agree with every one of those words. Thank you so much Thomas
It brought memories of my mom when although we do not have stereo or music source I learned a lot from her just listening to her rich experience of our poor life.
Every time I listen to this song, I feel sad, sad about the paths I had hesitated to take, for lack of audacity, or out of fear. Regrets that we must assume for the rest of our lives.
This song is incredibly difficult to arrange and play, in order to get its enormous potentials in terms of vibrations, colours, potency and contents. I find this version the best, till now.
@@mickylong9546 Petula's is still the ULTIMATE VERSION by far. Even the original singer of the song Noel Harrison as recognised that by stating this as a fact. Enough said.
"for a moment you could not recall the color of his eyes." The lyrics to this song are so touching and sad. I remember when this song was first released. Loved it then, love it now. Ray, your video is perfect! Thumbs Up! xoxo :-) Sandy
Much debate over who has the best version of this song. Pet Clark, Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Alison Moyet.....You can find this song done by so many tremendous vocalists. I believe that Johnny Mathis has the most beautiful voice ever put into a human being, making his version simply impossible to rival.
WELL Keith Ellison I just want to say that all of the plaudits that you have given Jonny Mathis are EXACTLY how I feel about Petula Clark who in my humble opinion as recorded the ULTIMATE VERSION of this song. And Petula Clark as NO rival.
The reason Petula Clark owns this song is not only her voice and her diction and her feeling, but her take on the RHYTHM. There has always been a relentless movement this song invokes and no one else I've heard picks up on it. The rest get dreamy, introverted, slow. Ms. Clark keeps the song moving , moving, moving, and she even creates "circles" with some notes. It is everything this song calls for and then some.
Hi Ray, this is a beautiful video, it's so romantic yet I love the way you set the images to express the fantasy aspect of the song and the lyrics. As always your technical expertise makes the video maginificent and is second to none. Happy Weekend coming up ! Lexi இڿڰۣ-ڰۣ-♥♥♥
Thank you for this wonderful video. If can make an observation. I was trying to sing along with the song and video but I could not follow very well because the words were appearing on the screen after the singing had begun each time the new set of words came on the screen.
Such a lovely song and one of the best by Perula Clark which I find her version is much better than the Noel Harrison version and I love the chilled out piano sounds to this song. I first heard this when I was on my last year at primary school in the early 90s when we had this song on the old Petula Clark LP album.😀
May I disagree? I have always been a dedicated fan of Petula Clark, but as for this song Dusty Springfield has delivered a surprisingly exquisite and captivatingly sincere rendition.
Yes, you can, and I have to agree, I love Pet Clark too. However this isn't quite her best. Seems too hurried to me, it doesn't take advantage of the richness of her beautiful voice. Dusty carries the standard of which others will be compared to. That being said, Jose Feliciano had a great recording, of course in his own style. In my opinion, one of the very best was by Neil Diamond.
made me remember, made me shiver, made me cry.... those words, that voice, i like Sting's version better, but still, the words.... they don't write them like anymore..... shame...
Wonderful version that makes me cry, and more now that i had to say good bye to my wife. Thanks X05Radar for downloading it for us.
You are very welcome , I am very sorry to hear that, my deepest condolences,
Awesome Petula Clark !

If you think this is the best version you must never have heard Noel Harrisons version best by far.
Thank you dearest beautiful Petula Clark for making me smile.
This song is so metaphysical.
Beautiful song
I choreographed an ensemble dance to this in high school. In 1993. :D It's still one of the haunting songs I've heard.
Haunting... the perfect word for this version. Petula is also an actress and I think her acting ability contributes to a sense of madness.
A wonderful song, a wonderful videoclip!
Perfectly haunting-- my fave version by far!

Does anybody know who did the version that was released in the early 70s?
Which one ? So many people sang this song, either in English or in French.
