enjoyed the comparison, this is the first video when I searched for it. I think it's common that good videos in FPV community isn't getting enough praises. Just because the community is still small. But you are doing a very good job, keep it up! and thank you!
Wow, this is nice. Not sure if it's a something that can be adjusted or what, but the GoPro seems better at capturing distant detail (the sky) and the Beta does a better job with what's right in front of you. Beta is more vibrant and captures better close up. Beta SMO would be my choice based on footage here. Thanks for awesome comparison!
I disagree. The gopro would most likely be the better choice. He never said which gopro he was using, and he didn't use the pro features that could grade the video afterwards. Most likely, this is an apples to oranges comparison that doesn't do justice to the gopro's quality.
A BIG design flaw with the SMO 4k is the opening in the case that allows the back of the power plug to be exposed. If your power wir egets jerked back by a branch, it will rip the power plug off the PCB and ruin the camera. A new case needs to be designed to cover the back of the power plug to a branch will only break the power wires and not tear the plug off the board. The SMO is supposedly designed for FPV quads but they seem to have forgotten that crashing is part of FPV. I am going to design a piece that clamps onto the side of the camera case that shields the wires and power connector from anything you might run into. I may also try to draw the case back in CAD and fill in that empty section that is the problem.
Very helpful. Subbed! I’d love to see a “bench analysis” of this footage. The most obvious differences were exposure and color, with the SMO exposing much farther the right. Are the highlights recoverable? A test with ND filters and fixed ISO would also be really valuable. Many thanks!!
I powered the SMO from the VBAT pad on my flight controller, but thought I'd like to put the camera on other quads, so I took that off and bought balance plug extensions and cut one up and made an adapter like you have. My SMO came with crappy solid wire with plastic insulation for the power plugs so I bought an SH1.0 connector kit that has silicone stranded wire and made a better power plug. I also bought the Matek 5v-9v micro BEC because I didn't like the loud pop sound when I'd plug unto the balance plug to power the camera. I also put a 35v 470uf capacitor on the BEC.
Quick question, how do you know which house is yours? Every single one looks identical like they were stamped out with a cookie cutter. Reminds me of that song from the show "weeds" little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky tacky, and they all looked just the same. I wouldn't know which house to land in front of.
I look for the biggest one and land 🤣😂 From the back of the houses they are all fairly plain, the fronts are all pretty different. Welcome to suburban America!
Thanks for the video. Been looking at an actual comparison between the GoPro, Insta 360 SMO and you even ad the DJI DVR as a bonus!! I really like the pic quality of the SMO but is a bit too bright sometimes. Have you done any filter testing to get it to look less bright? I also own a Titan DC. 😉
I need to get some lower ND filters the ND16 it came with would have been too much for the time of day I was shooting. ND8 would probably have been ideal. Check our latest video of the SMO 4K on the Flywoo HEXplorer.
That is correct, the GPS is built into the same board that the record button is on, it plugs into the top ribbon cable port on the right, just above the 2 ports for the touchscreen. You could further take apart the GoPro to get the GPS Board / Record button out but then you would have a loose board stuck to the Naked GoPro case. Another easy mod for the Naked GoPro is keeping the front screen.

Great tip! I used a heat gun, heating it from the inside like that would probably work better. When this video was recorded the camera was just released, all the other reviewers were calling it the S.M.O. 4K so I just went with it.
For three days I have been suffering with naked, I rebuilt my go pro 6 in naked. I have the same drone. But after the flights, all the videos are with jelly. the camera is fixed as rigidly as yours. The PID and filter settings did not help, I changed the propellers, the drone was whole without falling. This camera performed well on cinewhoop, no problem. Could you please send your PIDs from DC5?

That DJI Air Unit is amazing. I guess I know what I'm blowing half of my stimulus on... DJI goggles and an Air unit, and maybe a Caddex digital system.
Hey Ryan, I was trying to do a similar comparison (with a Naked GP8) last week. However, the footage from the SMO 4k with Flowstate stabilization enabled in the desktop app had massive jello. Did you face this as well? Do you need to use the ND filter with it to eliminate that? Not sure what I am doing incorrectly. Its mounted on a Megabee V2 whoop.
I did not use an ND filter for this video, I did experience jello on another 5in drone though, not sure if it's due to vibrations, I wasn't using the ND filter for that flight either though.
@@AerialPixel No sweat! Fair enough. I couldn't find the holder that supports two cams on the site though? Is that your design or a common holder design?
That was our design, made to the right width to keep the cameras as close together as possible, you can probably find similar items though on Amazon, they just get a little bulky.

You most likely aren't supplying enough power to the naked GoPro. If you soldered to a 5V pad on your FC this will not be enough voltage, you need 6v to 27v input to properly power it. If you don't have a 9V pad on your FC solder the Red and Black wires directly to the pads your battery lead connect to on the ESC board or a VBAT pad on your FC.
That's definitely odd then. Only issue I've ever had with the Naked GoPro is when I had a lose ground wire connection, resoldered it and it has been fine since. Maybe your BEC board you get from BetaFPV is bad or not seated all the way onto the GoPro board?
@@AerialPixel Yea, feels like only i have that kind of issue. I have to try with other bec borad cuz gopro by itself working fine. As far as I understood when you connect to gopro via app it doesn't tell you that "battery is low", right?

The footage for both cameras was stabilized using their own software (Insta360 Studio for the SMO 4K and ReelSteady for GoPro) as the raw footage on both isn't stabilized.
