SMO is cool for the price but the quality difference between the GP is staggering. the SMO FOV change is cool, until you look at the grain and details in the footage. but if you only have $200 in your budget, looks solid
When the GepRC Naked 8 came out, in May, it originally sold at $369, as I purchased mine from geprc's website at that price. At $369 it was a tough buy, but justified as a gopro 8 is about $300, Gopro 8 BEC $40, plus time (priceless). But at $450, that's a lot to spend on naked gopro hero 8 and don't think I'd order one at that price.
You confirmed my concerns about the SMO. Switching hue and saturation back and forth, is a no go for cine. Glad I havent pulled the trigger few weeks ago.
Would be interesting if adding Insta 360 go 2 to the comparison it's almost the same weight roughly around the same price range and does a lot more than just FPV with the cost of not having 4k
Just saw this video. I'm always behind when jumping in to new technologies. I grabbed an SMO 4K and it will be delivered this coming Saturday. I saw the slow motion you demonstrated at 20:00, wow, I love it! Thank you!

I've been using the SMO4k for a while now. I have some color graded examples on my channel. I think for my personal use, it is enough. Really easy to use and set up.
The resolution limitations with the SMO are a result of post-processing FOV and stabilization. For example, if you record at 4k and then change to narrow FOV in post, you're not going to get 4k anymore. That's why GoPro makes you make that decision when you're recording.
Hey Joshua, great video as usual. Update to the 2021 version of Insta360 Studio, you then have the FPV option to use. I agree completely I like my naked GoPros (Hero 6 and 8) over the SMO 4K hands down.

I use naked Gopros and his comment about the locking plug is right on, I trimmed the locking tab of the power plugs down on mine so that when they (often) get pulled in a crash it will not pull the female plug end out. losing power is better than killing the BEC. I created tpu mounts that hold the angle so it is less likely to pull out. Will be checking out the GepRC version, been using iflight's tpu cases. Comments about SMO 4k dropping files if turned off or losing power are accurate. GoPro Labs QR system is the way to go, there is an app that you can set all the details with, and a website that you can use to set perfect time to the second. I use the QR code to set the camera to activate by motion sensor. Excellent system.
A big win for the gepRC hero8, is if you already have hero 8s and you want to be able to work with the same footage settings and workflow with footage from a smaller quad.
But why is the power connector on the naked GoPro in the middle with no option to remove the mounting bump? It makes it incompatible with a lot of the naked GoPro mounts out there. The insta360 comes with an extra back plate so you can use the other kind of mount.
Flying with Insta360 for second month - it’s ok for cinematic usage, but for freestyle it’s a bit pain if you landing hard and if you touch power cord - video will not be saved and file will be corrupted, so definitely it’s use case for safe flights only.

The biggest thing I've found with almost anything that isn't GoPro is that the bitrate is just too low for a lot of "real" work and nobody really talks about that. Yes, sensor size and sensor play a big part too, but one of the big killers of the OG Insta360 Go was/is that 30-40mbps bitrate. The SMO says it will do 100mpbs but I haven't seen an FPV reviewer talk or show if that's true or not. Obviously the SMO is going to lose on resolution, but if it can not look like Campbell's Chunky Bit Soup by controlling bitrate, then it might be an okay option...maybe just not at that price. :)
The 100 Mbps bitrate is kind of meaningless if the data being fed to the encoder is garbage. You just get a shitty looking high-bitrate file. But yeah I assume the bitrate they advertise is accurate.
@@JoshuaBardwell true, if the sensor is shite, no need for good bitrate. I just haven’t seen a reviewer look into the settings on the smo or the desktop app to confirm bitrate. I know my 1st gen 360go does 33mbps 99% of the time even though 40 is advertised
Now now. Remember that gopro does the exact same with its 4k recordings. So the thing in my experience with durability and cameras, a lot of it depends on the mount. For instance, the case from CMW is the best I have seen for protection. Might weigh a few grams more but it’s tough. I find those mounts that grab the middle of the cam leaving the ends exposed to be the least protective. I have a GP7 with cracked back screen and no cover on the USB that is proof lol.

I'm not 100% on this so please don't take it too far. I'm just confused why BetaFPV says, "this is out of stock go buy it from resellers," instead of, "out of stock for now but will be back soon."
So I noticed in video you applied your gopro settings before getting color graded.. Which I'm sure locked ISO, WB and so forth in protunes... I'd be curious what settings did you manually set or lock before the smo 4k was color graded? Also when you factor in post editing stabilization, which is included in insta360's software vs the realsteady add on which is another $100 for GoPro users. While it's surely a second in image quality, the smo4k comes out ahead a bit more in savings.
22:06 gopro looks like it has a layer similar to what you will find in lightroom, I forgot what it's called. either way their smoothing/sharpening looks way better than the insta360. I wonder if it could just be an algorithm thing not actually hardware.
I have this Naked GoPro case from GepRC you mention it takes standard Hero 8 filters? Is this right? If you have links and you have tested would be keen to see I have a feeling maybe it takes Hero6/6 filters? Very keen to get some filters. Got a 3D file for an adapter to some insta360 filters.. yet to print and test. If I can just get standard filters from a off the shelf for the GepRC Naked case that would be great.
How do you power the Geprc Naked GoPro Hero 8? I know it comes with a cable to solder to the FC, but I hear that could cause damage due to spikes on some boards used on naked gopros. I also see there is a cable to power from balance lead, but my concern would again be damage due to spikes. I see people powering from balance lead and use a 5v regulator in between the lipo and camera. So is the BEC on most boards not good enough protection?
I'd love to see feeding the gyro data from the FC for post processing image stabilization! Crazy thought and a nightmare to program I guess, having no experience myself.
@@JoshuaBardwell You truly know it all;) Thanks a lot, will check that out (after the Video). And it's impressive to see what people are willing to try.
The GoPro's 4k-footage had a weird "heartbeat" -like stuttering on my 144p viewport... I don't think I'm really able to view 4k-footage on my end but this still was weird and is reproducable for me. 🤔
Next challenge .. how many shirts can you wear during a video? :-D I have the SMO4K and you can go around with the color issues if u hard set the ISO and color temp.. it's still there but less.
Hello! This may be a dumb question because I am new to the hobby but how did you actually wire the power for the cameras into the drone? To the flight controller or the ESC and where? I have a CineWhoop that I would like to use this on to have it power it. Thank you!
what about the new kid in the block, the RunCam thumb Pro, any thoughts? because I can get 2 thumb pro and still have money left instead of 1 naked and fragile gopro or insta360
i just dont see myself spending £400 for a GoPro hero 8 with worse durability. For most applications, I think the insta360 smo is good enough and it enables you to learn about colour grading and post processing techniques for half the price.
Sadly all the "competition" to gopro has the issue with colors and hue. They all have either a red, blue or green color tint that's impossible to grade properly ):
GoPro's color science is far from perfect, but lock ISO, lock white balance, and use flat color profile, and you definitely have something you can work with. Nobody else even comes close.
I don't lock shutter on any of my FPV systems because the exposure changes between sky and shadow are too extreme. If you lock both ISO and shutter, you will get pure blackness or pure white in some part of your recording, unless you are flying in a very controlled lighting situation. You have to lock ISO only and then let shutter compensate for changing exposure. The Insta and GoPro were set up as close to ideal as their software would let me.
From what I can see there is a new ONE R firmware with sharpness adjustment, do we know if it works on the SMO4K? Which FW was yours? I notice no "FPV mode" in your studio.
Instead of making these un-aerodinamic and fragile shapes, why dont they make a rugged session-box style with an interchangeable lens protector that can be cheaply replaced when you break it?
Because making a great action camera is hard. There are cameras like that, such as the Runcam 5 Orange and Caddx Orca. The image quality is not very good.
It wouldn't fit into a cube shape because it's based on the original Hero 8 mainboard, which is a wide rectangle. I mean, I guess anything is possible but not by using the Hero mainboard.
Lazy might not be the right word, but I think it would certainly be a good idea to focus on actually flying or editing videos, rather than having to completely learn how to make a specific part of the drone first.
If you're planning on buying an SMO - then... DON"T. Joshua final words were "there is still some work to be done there".. well.. guess what.. no one is working on it.. There are no FW updates. BetaFPV even added a warning not to apply the latest FW updated cause it will kill the camera.. Setting Exposure to Auto results with a total unusable video as it keeps trying to "find" the correct exposure (causing it to jump brighter and darker). Locking the exposure (manual) thru the app works great - as long as the app connected. It looks like if you're powering the camera off and on and start recording -> it reverts back to Auto-exp' as a default. Insta360 Studio is used to edit SMO movies - BUT, you don't get to have all the features as you would have if you were using one of the bigger cameras..
How did you use so easy the app for the SMO??, I CANT MAKE IT RUN, my SMO wont run on my iphone 13… and support betafpv dont want to assume the error… god im so sorry for picking the SMO… now i have to buy another camera…

Also when you factor in post editing stabilization, which is included in insta360's software vs the realsteady add on which is another $100 for GoPro users. While it's surely a second in image quality, the smo4k comes out ahead a bit more in savings.
I'll pass , I'll stick with the gopro hero 7 and my insta360 r with 360 and 4k mod . Thank you for a great detailed video I do appreciate it !
Hey bardwell I am loving the videos but i wanted to know if you would recommend the avio 3 in
Would you be able to review the “new” GEPRC Naked Hero 9/10/11? I’ve seen that it’s a little bit bigger than a normal naked gopro.
The geprc GoPro 8 bec looks exactly like betafpv’s version. Are thy the same?
I would be interested in a comparason between the insta 360 go and insta 360 go 2, in particular the durability for 3inch freestyle.
Damn, Bardwell! Now I want them both!
Watching in 360p 😮 that quality is insane!
22:06 gopro looks like it has a layer similar to what you will find in lightroom, I forgot what it's called. either way their smoothing/sharpening looks way better than the insta360. I wonder if it could just be an algorithm thing not actually hardware.
can you show how to or where to actually solder the Insta360 SMO4K wires???
Will we see a iflight action cam comparison soon as well?
JB: “Do you like to.....do it....yourself? He he”
Everyone: “....”
It seemed to me that the SMO 4K has lost focus on distant objects. Perhaps it makes sense to twist the lens.
Could it be that less sharpness of the SMO4k is a problem of focus?
And thanks again for a great video ...
I bought the geprc hero 8 👍🏼
How do you power the Geprc Naked GoPro Hero 8? I know it comes with a cable to solder to the FC, but I hear that could cause damage due to spikes on some boards used on naked gopros. I also see there is a cable to power from balance lead, but my concern would again be damage due to spikes. I see people powering from balance lead and use a 5v regulator in between the lipo and camera. So is the BEC on most boards not good enough protection?
I'd love to see feeding the gyro data from the FC for post processing image stabilization! Crazy thought and a nightmare to program I guess, having no experience myself.
That program exists. I think it's called gyro flow.
For me also, at 1080p
@Joshua Bardwell Did you have to print a custom mount to mount the SMO4K to the Geprc Smart 35?
No it came with a screw mount.
Thank you!
So hyped I just got the conversion kit from geprc in the mail!
My plam was to buy another broken hero 8 and slosh it on in!
I think geprc is quailty no one seems to believe me
What about the new iflight camera ?
I'd like to see a naked camera that is armored or built inside a quad so you get some weight saving without sacrificing durability.
what about the new kid in the block, the RunCam thumb Pro, any thoughts? because I can get 2 thumb pro and still have money left instead of 1 naked and fragile gopro or insta360
ruclips.net/video/CiXqm016ljc/видео.html&ab_channel=JoshuaBardwell
i just dont see myself spending £400 for a GoPro hero 8 with worse durability. For most applications, I think the insta360 smo is good enough and it enables you to learn about colour grading and post processing techniques for half the price.
Hello Joshua, my GEPRC naked gopro 8 the lens glass cover felt off as well what did you use to put it back?
You live in such a beautiful place
Sadly all the "competition" to gopro has the issue with colors and hue. They all have either a red, blue or green color tint that's impossible to grade properly ):
And impossibility to use reelsteady go...
GoPro's color science is far from perfect, but lock ISO, lock white balance, and use flat color profile, and you definitely have something you can work with. Nobody else even comes close.
You should have locked iso and shutter on the 360, I bet that the colors dont shift then.
@@JoshuaBardwell can you lock the exposure on both of these cameras?
can you do a test on Hobbyking graphene panthers if you haven't
totally unrelated, i love how JBs phone is exploding from disco msgs... can you even turn volume up on your phone, bro? :D
tell me the model of the drone, the video transmitter and the protocol you used in the video?
And for the conclusion, I really couldn't agree more from my own experience: Insta more grainy and washed-out than GoPro.
and the price point, Naked Gopro 8 vs SMO4k...I can deal with the color issues of the SMO4k for the couple of hundred $$ savings... :)
At 17:43 you say it's 2.7k30 without stabilization but the notes in the top left say 4k60 with stabilization?
The note is correct. I misspoke. But when making the titles I double checked the clip properties to be sure.
@@JoshuaBardwell Noted, thank you

AMAZING CONTENT
Can I solder geprc gopro to my esc + - where is the XT60 ?
From what I can see there is a new ONE R firmware with sharpness adjustment, do we know if it works on the SMO4K? Which FW was yours? I notice no "FPV mode" in your studio.
Its only on ios
@@verdi6092 no, this option also exist in Insta360 for computer.
FPV Mode was present on some of my clips, just for some reason it wasn't available on that clip. I'm not sure why.
How/can do you hook up the blue and yellow wires to take advantage of the remote on/off?
Video is coming.
@@JoshuaBardwell I mean it would make sense and be technically possible to fit This geprc-insta tech into That cube shape …
In which you can buy again
It wouldn't fit into a cube shape because it's based on the original Hero 8 mainboard, which is a wide rectangle. I mean, I guess anything is possible but not by using the Hero mainboard.
The loss of audio is the only thing holding me back on ordering the kit for a gopro
3:11 ok how about protune? :D how do you set shutter speed?
You can use the labs to pair or do it all with labs… Labs is so great once you get used to it
Lazy might not be the right word, but I think it would certainly be a good idea to focus on actually flying or editing videos, rather than having to completely learn how to make a specific part of the drone first.
Incant bind the smo to my phone…
Can you easily replace lens in this insta360 smo?
I see the naked gopro hero 8 on ebay for a good price.
Still standing in here for a naked GoPro... 🤷🏼♂️😉
Does the insta360 SMO allow footage rotation in the app like the insta360 go?
No.
hmm, my insta360 app has a FPV settting... on FOV view
you cut the video after the three button presses on the naked8. What was the problem?
No problem. It just took a second to get it to connect and I didn't want to waste your time.
@@JoshuaBardwell That's the kind of info that is interesting though in a product review and comparison. I personnally have a lot of difficulty to pair nakeds with the app, so that's why I noticed.
Great work as always, thanks JB.
