    BTW: You usually can apply minor motion blur in post production. It basically uses visual flow estimation between frames to guess how fast each part of the image moved and then applies a motion blur in the correct direction with the strength you chose. It usually takes FOREVER though.

    Did you notice and stepped exposure compensation on the insta? I have a feeling if that would not be as smooth as Gopro's. I as well prefer locking shutter speed, however there are situations indoors, when you need auto as the light varies too much...

    Good review however, you should consider the cost of buying a naked GoPro8 to the SMO. I've been looking at buying a naked GoPro vs. buying one and doing it myself and saw the SMO as an excellent alternative for the price considering a naked GP6 can go for $350-400. Sure the GP8 is $10 more right now but you also have this pig that needs tedious disassembly for weight comparison. I also feel much of the video quality that is lacking in the SMO can be made up for in post-production.

    LOL. Roogi you missed the whole point of the insta360 SMO. There's no reason to compare a full sized gopro hero 8 to the SMO. The SMO is competing with the Naked gopro hero 7. It's for people who don't want to tear apart their gopros and risk bricking it. Instead this is a already done solution for that and micro, mini kwads that can't carry or you don't want affecting your flight style due to weight. You should go back and compare those cameras (and even the insta360 go) to the SMO. And compare the user experience with both. Naked gopro (which I have) having to connect your screen to it, to get it set up for the first time, etc. It's for micro, mini kwads that you can't carry a full sized gopro on. Yes, it's not as good as the gopro hero 8, but that's not what the point why they made the Insta360 SMO. Nice comparison vid, but you missed the boat on this one Roogie.

    • @Kabab
      @Kabab  3 года назад

      The H7 is very similar to the H8. I did discuss the whole weight aspect of it at the end but I don't feel it's suitable to compare this to an exploded hero because the GoPro will be very easily better quality. Also, the H8 is actually $230 at Costco right now so $10 cheaper.

    • @djdubz
      @djdubz 3 года назад

      @@Kabab fair enough, but still don't think it's apples to apples comparison. If you're comparing full sized cameras that's one thing, but one's a micro style cam and the other is full sized camera with much more weight. You can get 5-10% off the insta smo at betafpv or diatone, if you're penny pinching with the gopro hero 8 on sale at costco.
      Personally I wouldn't get a gopro hero 8 due to the lens not replaceable like the hero 7. I'd get a hero 9 (with replaceable lens unlike the h8) if I wanted a new full sized camera, if I was looking at getting the gopro hero 8. But my hero 7, hero 5 session, and naked gopro 7 do just fine for me (I'm no professional, like a lot of fpv'ers and unless you're pro and need top of the line footage, then something like the insta360 SMO or naked gopro is perfect, especially if you're trying to save weight for your mini/micro kwads.) For my 5" and above gopro hero 7 all day!
      BTW - Since you do have some pull, maybe ask insta360 to release a firmware upgrade that might help the SMO or the 1" sensor one or even better, 1" sensor mod. :)

    This may be premature, but I'm wondering if you have any connections in the battery world that can shed some insight on all this new hype around the next gen of solid state batteries, particularly with respect to quad issues like thermal properties, weight, power density, weight, ability to produce high amp discharge, expected number of power cycles, lifetime reduction from storing fully charged, cost, yadda yadda...I know a lot of this is not know but with all your knowledgeable contacts I think slot of people would be really interested to know what our quads might've able to do with this new gen of batteries. There's some info out there with respect to it's usage in cars but obviously quad power needs are probably different in important ways. Probably too early for such a request, but just a thought...

    • @Kabab

    Is the Hero8 being stripped done and made lighter? I thought it was only the Hero 6. Great review, other than the fact that you are comparing a 30g stripped down camera to a 120+g full Hero 8. These cameras would be flown on completely different quads, with the Hero 8 being a slight stretch to add to a powerful 3" quad. So, am I missing something? Or, wouldn't this be a better comparison with the Hero6 stripped down version? Then it would be apples to apples, but as is, it is a stripped down Smo 4k 30g, being compared to a stock Hero8, at 120+grams.
    If you are intent at comparing these as is, and not both stripped down, I feel the SMO 4K is the clear winner here. Obviously because it can be flown on nearly ANY quad over, let's say, 75 - 85mm.
    IMO, a better comparison would have been with the Hero6 stripped down model. Which one has to do themselves, take the very real chance of ruining it, where as the SMO 4K comes ready to go from the factory... WITH A WARRANTY! Add to that the fact that Insta360 actually is recognizing the FPV hobby and has now produced its second camera for us, where Gopro discontinued the Session, even after much pleading from our community! Thanks Insta360! 🤔😎🤘🎅🎄☃️

    • @Kabab
      @Kabab  3 года назад

      yes people are stripping the hero 8 too as far as I can tell. I go over this at the end as well. The title of the video even says "even comparable?". At the end of the day, if you're looking for the best quality footage, it's going to come from a gopro and not this isnta360 camera. So you can make whatever accommodations to get that gopro quality if that's what you're after. Otherwise, this is suitable for anyone that's okay with the quality you get from it. Also, the warranty is just that, a warranty. It's not insurance. The gopro can be gotten with a square trade or best buy warranty that will cover actual breaking the camera from crashing and smashing. The best buy warranty is literally free because they refund you the warranty amount as well if you go in and exchange it. Square trade can probably be gotten on the SMO too maybe.

I have planned to buy one, do the XT30 mod and use the same 1S 520 mAh batteries that I have for the excellent BabyTooth.
      Can you please comment the name of this whoop at 8:21 or the chassis name if it is available? I would need to investigate whether this is good for me or the TinyHawk II.

      I will look at the whoop then and see whether it is any idea to "marry" your 1S board and BabyTooth electric machines with such a whoop frame and then use them on 1S. The benefit would be to able to cherry pick a good FPV camera on it (your new camera would be a strong contender).
      Maybe I am just overengineering this project yet again, and just buying a TinyHawk 2, converting it to XT30 and just fly on 1S would be the best for my indoor application :-)

    Honestly the part that has me the most interested is that it is powered off of the LiPo. It can be a pain having to charge a bunch of GoPro batteries, or in my case, having a Session means having to have several sessions to record in HD all day. Ive been frustrated with the action camera market since it started, with a few exceptions that never gained traction. GoPro has been the frat boy whose parents bought his way into college then stumbled into a minimal effort six figure white collar job straight out of undergrad, sure theyve shown up but theyve never done the work. They have made truly infantile incremental advancements that require the bare minimum of creativity or innovation. Ive never been a fan of Gopro as a company or the design solutions they have produced. In terms of image quality and stabilization Sony had them beat five years ago but Gopro's name recognition held on and Sony did a terrible job of winning market share and seemingly abandoned the segment (RX0II is not within this segment.)

    We can only hope GoPro makes a small version of the 9 or newer, that’d be great. In the trailer when they released the 9 the first clip was on an Fpv drone so hopefully they see us needing a smaller/ lighter version

      I got the SMO for 200usd shipped to Switzerland, so no comparison to the gopro8 in price range. Insta360 SMO clear winner, guess he is a gopro fanboy

      Company built high quality light camera. Only 30g. Not 128g. Flywoo sold a naked hero 7 but don't know if they still are.
      And they only selling this new with warranty for $240

    What about durability? Has to be closer to a deceased GoPro than a stock hero 8, right? You slam a miniquad with that on there is gonezo
    Edit: de-cased not deceased hahah

      It's probably equally as durable as the exploded gopro. I didn't crash this one.
