Miakel has said that he really didn't know how to end the song the song so he just kind of destroys it. Personally, I love it because nearly every song from their death metal era has a touch of eerieness and not even their clean songs are safe.
Here's Mikael on that: "I didn't have an ending for the song; there was a few options to end a nice song like that. Either you end on a high note with a nice chord or a fade out or something. But I just came up with the idea that we should end it in a freaky way and I'm just basically playing this ending lick on the nylon string guitar and I told Fredrik to de-tune the guitar in real time as I was playing. So obviously it sounds very ugly but that was the whole purpose. We didn't know if it would work or not but it did."
Opeth - Faith in others. It’s lovely.. sad and beautiful at the same time. Vocals are great too. Just sit back relax and enjoy this one! It’s one of those songs to be enjoyed with total patience..
Mikael have an unique voice. So beautiful Clean Vocal. So Deep Growl. And what about his Scream? Aha) Guitar Master. Multi-instrumentalist. Fantastic. Opeth Band. All of them!
Opeth is one of the bands (like Iron Maiden) where I like Every Single Song they've written. Not a clinker or a filler in the bunch. Awesome. 🤘 Yes! Definitely see them live. Goes beyond awesome. Especially if they play Deliverance.
Opeth is one of my favorites of all time, thank you for putting a new perspective on the songs! I love it! Some opeth songs that nobody reacts to (all studio) When , April Ethereal , Moonlapse Vertigo , Baying of the hounds , Godheads lament , Under a weeping moon
Under the weeping moon is one of my jams from the older stuff.... it makes my ears smile!! My mouth smiles also due to all the great memories that are invoked -which is hard to convey to anyone unless they were there
I love the way the detuned guitar at the end slowly gets worse and worse sounding as it goes. The creepy laugh at the very end just adds that extra something that elevates it from fun to sinister.
Watershed is my favourite Opeth album and in my top 5 albums of all time. Doesn't get enough love from fans, IMO. I like the end of Burden. I heard that it was because they didn't know how to end the song, but it works perfectly, moving from the beauty of Burden to the far more sinister Porcelain Heart. Nice, drama free and seemingly genuine reaction. If you're doing Hessian Peel next, I'll stick around. The Lotus Eater and Hessian Peel are both fantastic.
I worked 22 years in a record store and they did an instore when Watershed was released. So many great memories. Starting with escorting Mikael to the toilet when the Heinekens started hitting. There was a line waiting around the block waiting for things to be signed. Amongst my 3 vinyl copies of Watershed there is proudly sitting a signed copy.
If you like this style of Opeth, you'll like the more recent albums. Watershed is the last album where Mikael growls, and his singing only gets better with time.
Saw all your Opeth reactions and must admit that your Opeth reactions are by far the best on whole youtube! Subscribed! This album is pure GOLD, and Hessian Peel is great choice.
I can't imagine listening to "Burden" without listening to "Porcelain Heart" next. Oh, and by the way, David Gilmour is my most favorite guitarist and musician, ever.
The songs end is done that way: Mikael Akerfeldt played that picking pattern straight through while Fredrik Akesson is detuning the strings...the loughter in the end is Mikael Akerfeldt who finally lost his countanance...
You should react to the combination of Coil and Heir Apparent, the two songs kind of go together, Coil is short and very sweet, and Heir Apparent is more dynamic, with brutal vocals and edit: NO cleans
Opeth and Dream Theater are kind of those bands who really make someone think that writing a good epic music piece is not an easy task... You have to be study theory for making these kind of musics... The little micro kinds odd beats, solo clarity, vocal layers etc are those things normal people skip... And say Yes!! It's good... But actually these kinds of musics are MASTERPIECES...
DT could break down each & every not of what they are doing and why plus tell how it follows music theory, chord progressions, which scale/mode that it's in/ect/ect. If i am not mistaken i think every member has a degree in music theory. That being said, Opeth imho blows them out of the water. I guess an analogy would be to compare Yngvie Malsteen to David Gilmore, sure YM is more of a technical virtuoso player, but he does not have the feel/soul of DG's playing. Rest notes are important people. So are sustains & bends.
Iirc Mikael Akerfeldt has even said that David Gilmour is one of his idols guitar playing wise. He definitely said he is not going for fast, impressive, shredding solos but instead melodic, emotional, soulful soloing. So the solo section is Mikael and Fredrik taking turns and I believe it is Mikael first, then Fredrik, then Mikael again, then Fredrik one more time and then they go into a duet. Fredrik can do the shred type solos as you might be able to guess because he has those very virtuoso fast licks in his playing although he keeps it still strictly melodic because Mikael told him to ;) Also, the organ solo is the shit :) But is it a Mellotron? Or a Hammond? I think it's a Hammond.
Thx for your reactions. Maybe you should try « River » from Pale Communion album. Or, a good live is « When » , live at Roundhouse Tapes. Hello from France :)
@@MusicCatsandCoffee Yeah, cool! IMO it's really the pinnacle of prog death metal Opeth, though many may disagree. After that they moved on to more proggy and softer sound, which I recommend as well. No demon there btw but still dark if not darker at some points:) Nepenthe, Häxprocess or Folklore on Heritage record could be a nice start for you to experience yet another side of Opeth, it's neither prog death, nor mellow Windowpane-esque sound. And Pale Communion just hits close for me, so it's one of my all time favorite albums.
@@jonkwape3097 Best i can describe Heritage is that it is heavily influenced by mid 70`s acid rock. Picture Jethro Tull & Ronnie James Dio mixed together but with modern production quality. Some hate it because it had no growls & wasn't what they were expecting from Opeth but it is just as good as any of their other works, just in a different way. It really is an 'apple to oranges comparison' (with it compared to other albums) even though it's the same band.
See that you're just sort of fascinated by them. I understand that you are going to listen to something with Peel (from the same album I guess😉). Lots of pleasure with that one 😇👿. Let me tell you about Jeckyll&Hyde. 😱 No, you experience the song yourself....
You were thinking of "Hessian Peel", from the same record that Burden, good but not so much. Instead with that one try with "The Lotus Eater", that could be the best of "Watershed". Ohhhhh, I know. You should try "The Lotus Eater" live!!! Omg that would be AWESOOMEEE
At some point you'll probably be expected to do Black Rose Immortal. It's sort of the 'Plaaaay Freeeeebird!!!!' of Opeth shows, but a lot of fans see it as their magnum opus. It's an older song so the production is much rawer with less keyboards and organs and the harsh vocals are probably the most demonic they've ever been, but it also has lots of acoustic sections, and just generally great riffage. Also it's 20 minutes long, but if you get into it, it doesn't feel like it. It's still a big commitment though.
@@Celatra Nectar would my weakest, but Morningrise is quite inconsistent as a whole imo. Black Rose is a slow burner in parts but not substantially worse than the other songs.

Sad story really. Way back in the days Micheal broke up with his girlfriend, and she eh... ended her days. Yeah. Unless I'm wrong this song is about carrying the burden of guilt and sorrow, and moving on I guess. Rising above it. I don't know. There might be an interview somewhere explaining it better.
I recommend you to listen to a track from "Watershed" Bonus it's called "Den Standiga resan" it's a cover of a Swedish song.. but the way Mikael delivers it it's just pure delight and mastery! ruclips.net/video/kMsFcjQjRaU/видео.html
While Still Life is my favorite Opeth album, Moeningeise probably the most nostalgic to me, and I get why Blackwater Park is so beloved, Watershed is probably my favorite.
Fun fact: David Gilmour is not a real human and thus cannot be killed by conventional weapons.
Why would someone even want to kill David Gilmour?
I disagree on Dime’s behalf. I always wonder how it would have been… if only.
