Mikael Åkerfeldt is a most friendly and very humble guy. He does a lot of interaction with his audience between the songs during the gigs. So, he's not a demon. He just sounds like one when he does the growling thing. Opeth is the best in music that could ever happen (for me😊). Top notch musicians playing beautiful sound.

Softer side of Opeth - Windowpane, Burden, In my time of need, To bid you farewell.
Harder side of Opeth - Blackwater Park, Master's Apprentice, Deliverance
Best of both worlds - The Drapery Falls, Ghost of Perdition, The Moor, Bleak,Hessian Peel
Even the those so called harder songs have mesmerising interludes and sections. You are going to love them. This is coming from someone who hated growling less than three years ago.
PS: It's the same guy except for some backing vocals . The guy sings like an angel but growls like the devil himself and hey , he is also the Lead Guitarist.

His name is Mikael. Fantastic talent.
The harmonizing is also him I believe. I believe they add that in production. He also does a lot of the song writing and the production. I'm not going to say it's almost genius level at times what he does but it's super talented.
    He also plays lead guitar
There was actually another singer that formed the band in 89 but by 91 it was Mikael Akerfeldts band and rightfully so. His talent is unreal.

No one gets into extreme vocals from one song, don’t worry. They’re definitely an acquired taste. If you want to get into them it just takes listening to various vocalists and kinds of extreme vocals and you acclimate until you start to enjoy that flavour in your music. Just like with anything though, there’s no need to acquire a taste. Nothing wrong with already knowing what you wanted to eat... this metaphor is going too far... I’m hungry.

Well luckily for me I grew up listening to alot of metal so the growling always sounded good to me (not to mention Mikael's growls are among the best). But I can imagine it being a little abrasive to someone who isn't used to it.

I'm glad you started your Opeth journey with Death Whispered a Lullaby, because I knew the talent would draw you in. I enjoy the complexities of the rest of their music but knew that Growling Vocals can be detracting. This is an amazing band. I highly recommend watching the live version of this song to see how easily he transitions between both vocal styles.

Yes, he got his technique down to a t when it comes to his growls. He does it effortlessly without straining or hurting himself in any way (well, these days he only does it live when playing older songs).

It's hard to say if you'll get used to the growls but after listening to multiple songs and getting a sense of where the growls are placed and why they're there, I think you'll get a better understanding of their sound.

During live performances one of the other members sing the harmony (usually the keyboard player) for obvious reasons. On the studio albums it's all Mikael except for a few songs on the album Blackwater Park who features Steven Wilson doing parts of the choruses and a few of their newer songs (post-growl era that started 2011-) .
Mikael's got a really wide range and we all love that warm tone and timbre when he sings in the low/mid registers.
To help you get over the demon growl aversion, perhaps it helps to imagine the song being sung from two different perspectives where the demon voice is the mockery/anger/hatred describing a scene while the clean voice is the melancholic/regretful/grieving/sad reflection upon the "story". The growling is definitely an acquired taste but the more you listen to it, the easier it gets until it feels weird if the songs removed the demon and replaced those parts with clean vocals. With Opeth it's easier to get used to since the song writing and the music is just so damn good as well as every song being a journey moving through different parts, making sure it never gets boring. In the end, the growling is a texture that (beyond being kind of abrasive to someone who's not used to it) creates/enhances a certain mood/experience of that particular piece of the song.
As for his lyrics.. he's rarely written straight forward lyrics that reads like a story, instead choosing to write somewhat vague lyrics with some key elements. It's up to the listener to combine the lyrical and musical content to make an interpretation of what it's about. Your personal interpretation or the emotions you get from the music + lyrics is what's important.

Ive never been a lyrics person (i dont know what some of my favorite songs are about), but heres what i remember:
Ghost Reveries (the Album this Song is on) is an "almost" Concept Album, where most of the songs form a story, though i think 2 of them (maybe only 1. definitely Isolation years, but i think also Hours of Wealth) are seperate from that Story.
Ghost of Perdition, the first song, is a kind-of prequel to it. In it the Protagonist's Mother is posessed by a demon. "Devil cracked the earthly shell, foretold she was the one
Blew hope into the room and said: "You have to live before you die young"" refers to the demon convincing the mother to give in, and in the end he decides to kill her. The rest of the story is about what happens afterwards (hes hunted, is conflicted with his decision and in the end is posessed himself)
no guarantee on any of this, since like i said, im not really a lyrics person.
Most people have given decent suggestions. I second "Hessian Peel" might be for you, additionally i would throw in "Harlequin Forest" which is from the same album as Ghost of perdition. I think you would like both of those.
Opeth has taken a different direction the last 4 albums, switching to a more pure progrock style. A lot of people dont rate those as highly, and while in total i agree, there are still some absolute brilliant songs on there. Id recommend "Eternal Rains will Come", "Folklore" or "River".

All the songs except Isolation years are connected. Also its not the mother thats possessed. The 1st song is the Grand Conjuration if u go story wise and he summons the devil in that song. In Ghost of Perdition he kills his mother. Baying of the Hounds and Beneath the Mire is him running away from the place he killed his mother since he feels bad and also doesnt wanna be caught. I think Harlequin Forest is him speaking about the devil and his cult by comparing them with trees and also he feels lost withing himself as the devil confuses him. Atonement is about him feeling bad and atoning for his sins. Hours of Wealth is him living alone and isolated from the world. At least this is what i interpreted while i listened to the album.

This is the band that got me into growls, same with lots of people. But it takes time and several listens to their clean works or songs you like most. Harlequin Forest is a good gateway song from this same album (Ghost Reveries). Previous works have a more death ambient to them except Damnation (Death Wispered a Lullaby is from this album), a side B to one of their heaviest (Deliverence) and some beautiful clean songs. But for me it´s their best era.

About the demon voice as you put it :) , i think that its extremely jarring and off putting for most people to begin with, i know the first time i listened to Opeth i thought it was way to extreme for my tastes , and this was while i was always llstening to bands with harash vocals , like Killswitch engage. There is levels of acceptance in growling/screaming etc for 100% of people i think , nobody goes from 0 to 100 , for most they go from one somewhat extreme band E.G slipknot, to the next , Lamb of god . KSE maybe ? , and slowly u end up at Opeth , or in time stuff even beyond it.
Also about the lyrics Opeth are pretty well known for having pretty vague and heavy metaphorical lyrics, so dont worry if u cant understand them , i dont think most of us do, also some of there albums are concept ablums that tell a whole story across the album, so you would have to start from beginning to end to even have a chance at understanding.

I know I’m 3 weeks late, and I’m commenting in the middle of this video to be clear, just wanted to say judging by your channel you probably haven’t heard too much progressive music. It can take a while to get used to the lengthy tracks, the long interludes, odd time signatures, weird transitions etc. (typical attributes of progressive rock/metal). Sometimes the artists like to build tension, and that can mean making you feel uncomfortable, or writing something that’s not always immediately accessible. But the pay off from that built-up tension can be very, very rewarding.

    • @dutchmastah07
      @dutchmastah07 3 года назад

Also, I commented before letting you finish a sentence. I thought you were “complaining” about the music but it was his voice. Opeth have kinda mellowed over the years and the growls are less evident and the music leans more towards the proggy end of metal. There are far worse Demon singers out there btw and Opeth are tame considering. If you want to indulge more demons/horror then try Cradle of Filth and King Diamond. See how you get on with those 2!

Opeth are Death Metal. They may be at times progressive and melodic, but they are still at their core Death Metal. Even their completely mellow songs are about death. You just need to get used to the vocals. By the way, I once turned a beautiful Latina woman into a metalhead just by using Opeth songs. I highly recommend it.

Your problem is that you a associate growling with "demon voice". No. It`s not demonic, using false vocal cords is not demonic, it`s just distorted sound. It`s a way to deliver emotions/mood that song needs(Mikael from Opeth usually uses growling to deliver grief or desperation). It can be used to give the voice some demonic feel but it`s not demonic at all by itself.

I get what you're saying here. The sound of this particular vocal is just what I would imagine a demon's singing voice to be. I think you can sound like a demon without being demonic though. So even if you take a song like "Mary Had a Little Lamb," and sing it with this voice, I would still have to say it sounds like a demon is singing it. But that doesn't make it a demonic song. As an outsider to this genre and style of singing, that's just my take on it.
