Back in the late 90's I was in the Army, and sometimes when I'd have a four-day I'd drive home to NC, straight through from Texas - this album was high on the 3am playlist in BFE Alabama.
Not to take anything away from Justin Chancellor, as he elevated Tool to a whole new level, but Paul's basslines, singlehandedly, gave me a much greater appreciation for the instrument, and any song that opened with a bass riff became instant favorites (first, Swamp Song, and later Hush after going back to pick up the Opiate EP. Then Aenema came out, and 46 & 2 was on repeat for months. It still took a while to warm up to the longer tracks, but I started gravitating towards tracks like Eulogy, and Pushit (still couldn't do Third Eye at that time). Now? Flood might be my favorite track on Undertow, and Third Eye top three (kind of a tie with Eulogy and Lateralus). You reach a point, upon repeated listens, where you understand that the instrumentation is telling a story just as much as the lyrics do. Nothing is by accident. The intro to Flood invokes images of rising tides, and crashing waves, encroaching menacingly, then appears to recede, giving a false sense of security, only for it to come back with a vengeance. By the time the bass kicks in, you realize its too late; time to run, and find higher ground. Simple, yet effective. These songs only get better with each listen, but the first time around.. yeah.. i get it. Sometimes I have to remember that I was that way, too, at one point.

First of all... Cat's do not ruin videos, they ENHANCE videos. ;D And this song is definately one of my favourites, if not THE favourite song from Undertow. I just love how it slowly starts to bubble and then kind of "boils over" when the song really starts. But that is matter of personal preferences. I like the anticipation. :)
They say animals can tell when certain weather events are about to happen..... I think mocha was getting ready for the flood....... This was amazing to see live, twice! 😎
What Tool video would be complete without being called a Jerk Off while wearing patient pants lol. This song is one I wouldn’t seek out to listen to, yet if it came on I wouldn’t turn it off… How could anyone not want to see the great Mocha!

I'm not a huge fan of the intro, but it feels like it's meant to be unsettling. I just wish it was a little bit shorter. The payoff for the rest of the song is worth it to me though. Since you mentioned Disgustipated too, it's track 69 on the CD and there are a bunch of blank tracks between these two songs.
We have a choice; every video is a good video (requires fakery), only good videos are posted (unsatisfying), or we get some videos that aren’t super fun. I find the 3rd option the most appealing, by far. And if you latch on to another band that some of us love, that is the REAL good time. To get this, though, we gotta plow through the Electric Callboys that some of us love. There will be misses. That is how it works, unless fakery, which I think is probably the more common solution. I like your approach.

Top 5 song for me and the best off this album. I don’t even care for the first half really. That’s how good the second half is.
