I knew Ren growing up when we were very young and I can say with great confidence he is exactly who he says he is, I think that is a factor why his music is doing so well. Not only is his music fantastic he is 110% himself, no smoke and mirrors and that is what makes him so relatable. He is and is going to go down as one of the great singer songwriters from the UK. I love his music and so does my 6 year old, and he found him on his own not through me showing him. Very proud to see someone who grew up were we did in the middle of nowhere become what he has. Your the man Ren!
Yeah my five year old is also as in love with REN’s art as I. She really takes in the words and explains her interpretations to me, especially about money, she blew my mind telling me “Mummy REN is saying some people have lots of money like daddy, and they might not be very nice, and some people have not much money like you, and that’s not fair, people should share more”. A beautiful, innocent child’s interpretation of RENs words. He can reach the heart of a child and mother equally. She always asks me if he is still poorly too. I hope REN knows how many hearts he touches and he even has 5 year olds checking on his health journey.
@@Io-Io-Io 100% hes always on my phone using it for youtube. So that where he probably stumbled on him but he never showed me or anything. But me and my wife were sat in the bedroom one night and we could hear our boy sat in his bedroom singing along to his IPad to Chalk Lines. I went to ask him who’s this and he started showing me all Rens songs lol now he thinks I’m a cool dad since I told him I grew up with Ren and went to school with him hahaha not that I hang out with anymore or anything like that lol
My theory: Ren’s is so attractive to people nowadays because he is delivering something we all crave whether we realize it or not: authenticity. In a world of fake sh*t everywhere and 24/hrs a day (courtesy the net) - brutal, honest authenticity is an antidote the audience wants. Ren is real.
I also believe it’s the small village upbringing that creates people like Ren. They aren’t all caught up in the glitz and glamour and bullshit of big cities
Complete honesty, clarity of thought and intelligence. This was a magnetically riveting watch, which crossed the complete emotional circumference for me. Thanks so much Ren and Justin for a discussion which will long resonate with me.
My wife and I watched this sharing a bottle of wine with the same excitement as watching a Saturday night movie, I loss count how many times she said, "He's so adorable " lol we both love you Ren ❤ and can't wait for the day you are on stage. Justin, this was a double bonus for us as 'I believe in a thing called love ' was our wedding song back in 2006. ❤❤
Just found you today!!!!! As someone who lives in chronic pain & has been ignored, not believed, seen by so many professionals, in and out of hospital all the time and no answers, thank you because I could relate to everything you spoke about and in your songs! I’m 44 it’s been a long time and I do lock myself away. I have become so lonely because no one understands and they all get so frustrated which yes effects your health in a way no one can understand… thank you for talking. Thank you for your songs I only literally found you couple hours ago and the 3 songs I have just listened to was like wow someone feels the same
I don’t know you but I wish the best , I self isolated myself once and your correct in the belief that it effects your health, good luck with everything your not alone in this world even though it may seem like that sometimes. Peace
I can so relate! I have chronic lyme. I chronic pain every day for 16 years plus So many other horrific symptoms. No one believed me either. It makes the suffering so much harder 😢
Ren is a super interesting dude but let's not discount the quality of Justin's interviewing style. Really natural, well researched and very personable.
I'm older...57...and I love this kid. Although his style isn't my norm, the stories he tells are amazingly relatable. Back in the day, Pink Floyd's The Wall was easily my favorite. So I see some of that in his work. The mental path they both follow. Not that he imitates at all, just that same vein. Well wishes for him in his career and in his health. Great interview. He seems so authentic in a fake world. I'm a fan.
What an eloquent talented little dude! Note to self: If you ever see Ren coming out of a store, don't go all fangirly at him. Accept that he's stepped out of his performer suit and leave him the hell alone. (That would be tough to do, I'm not gonna lie. But now I know - and if he's ever in Houston, Texas - I'll commit to doing that for him.) Thanks, Justin, for such a great interview. :)
Fabulous interview. As a 50+ man I thought I knew what music I liked, Indie, punk, Stoner Rock, alt rock. I really didn’t believe that, at my age this would ever change, but what REN is doing now has blown my mind. I realised that I had pretty much stopped listening to new music and REN has totally changed this - Thanks for that REN.
Dude, I’m 50 and have 5 version of Dopesmoker in my record collection and in 2023 my Spotify Wrapped is going to be Ren and Chinchilla. My daughters are trying to figure out what happened to me. 🤣🤣🤣
I put this interview on with the intention of doing mundane stuff at the same time as listening, but i havent done a single damn thing, just sat here completely captivated, fascinated, enthralled. Ren is a once in a generation artist and I feel privileged that I'm here to witness it, he deserves every success heading his way.
Agree, he’s in a class of his own. Also just wrote another comment about not getting anything done or doing anything else today, as my ears are captured here for the weekend I think 😂
Idk, he wasn't redirecting Ren in mid topic. I found that when he did give his input or ask a question, it was because he could relate to what Ren was saying or what Ren was saying had intrigued him, and he wanted to know more. To me, that's called a conversation. To go even further, this is a typical conversation between two neurodivergent minded people.
@Quietus Forgotten absolutely. Ren was a guest on Justin's show and respected that dynamic. There is a decent age difference between the two. I feel like Justin respects Ren's musicianship, and after a point in the interview, he really wanted to just shoot the shit with Ren as an equal. Ren being younger than Justin, and maybe not used to that level of recognition recorded for the world to see acted like the humble person that he is.
I can identify with Ren's brain and I'm a 60 year old woman. I could never be put in a box either. I wanted to do everything and have a brain that is both very creative & very inquisitive. Never diagnosed with ADHD but sounds about right. lol. Where I do always feel most at peace with myself is in music & nature. Two things that I always say set the human spirit free. Ren reminds me of someone like Van Gogh or Davinci. He is an artist in every sense of the word and born to do exactly what he is doing. He connects to people of ALL ages because he expresses a truth about the human condition that we all can relate to. No one gets through this life pain free. Ren is a rare gem in the music industry, and his message is needed!
Everything about Ren is astonishing. He's completely reinvigorated my optimism that even in today's industry climate, stunning voices can emerge and rise far above the fray. He's also completely adorable. I mean, come on.
Oh, brother, from another fighter of chronic neurological Lyme, MCAS, PANDAS/PANS, assorted mental health conditions, and a similarly long list we don’t need to dive into fully, I’m in tears watching you describe a journey that hits so close to home. Seriously SO MANY similarities. Thank you for continuing to fight and bless this world with your presence. Fighting alongside you and believing we will all find a cure.
Brilliant interview! What an intelligent, humble and engaging young man Ren is. Refreshingly honest, doesn't avoid answering personnel questions and isn't looking for sympathy. Ren, I wish you every success and a healthy future!
@@bantacommander8744 But he isn't. He's telling his story and being vulnerable. Not once has he ever asked for pity (implicitly or otherwise). The world needs more transparency when it comes to mental health. And he is doing it through music.
I thought that too. He got me when he had a painful moment remembering when he thought he didn't have many years left, it was a good save by Justin bringing him back to the present moment
It's great news isn't it!? It's like when he said the "peak" of his illness, like he's through it now. And what do you know : he managed to make it through just when he's beginning to be noticed! So after years of doing nothing but practise while claiming benefits, now he's making money and he's healed. It's a miracle!!!
@@bantacommander8744 he's not healed though, he's much recovered but as he said in one of his Community posts, the damage is far worse than originally thought, some of it irrevocable and even in this interview he said he still suffers with illness/debilitating fatigue and has to have periods of rest between the activities we get to see
@@Veeliscious Yes, I've heard plenty of benefit cheats in my line of work, and they all seem to have plenty of strength, stamina and drive until it's time for work: then they're either spent or just too "ill." Trust me, no matter what you or anyone else say, and even though I understand you're coming from a good place, my mind cannot be changed. I've personally witnessed this type a thousand times or more. Thank you for taking the time to reply though.
My Sister was diagnosed with ME when she was 8 and was hospitalized for close to 6 months. in that time i don't think she was ever tested for Lyme disease. she has had problems like you describe for YEARS.. Needless to say i sent her a message to get tested. Thank you for sharing this @RenMakesMusic !!!!!
Here in the U.S. it's Mental Health Awareness Month, and I happened to hear "Hi Ren" for the first time. THIS ARTIST NEEDS TO BE ENCOURAGED TO KEEP DOING WHAT HE DOES.
When you're a songwriter, the best thing about watching Ren (in any format really) is that he makes you want to stop what you are doing and create something immediately. His energy is just infectious like that.
After getting COVID 1.5 years ago I have been suffering daily from ME/CFS. At the age of 26 it has flipped my entire life upside down. I feel like nobody wants to hear about it and it has been a very lonely journey for me. It really meant a lot to me when I discovered one of my favourite artists suffers from similar daily struggles and is very vocal about it. I don't think people realize how devastating this is on both body and mind. Quality of life is significantly reduced but nobody around you can see the suffering. Most people think im just "stressed" or "tired". Having a person with a following openly validate and acknowledge it is much appreciated. I even reached out to Ren on one of his Music videos to ask him something about his illness and he was kind enough to take the time to respond.
dont give up, you never know you could spontaneously go into remission tomorrow. i would urge you to find a good specialist tho, they can try antivirals and such that may make you feel better
I got something similar following another viral infection. I was 28 then. Too fatigued to do much, couldn’t think straight or concentrate. People could not understand. There are virtual support groups for ME/CFS- join one. Be patient. You will climb out of this….eventually
Hang in there. The support groups are great. Helps me with the mental beatdown I give myself regularly. Hope you feel better soon. You are young and the body is pretty amazing. ❤
Hearing Ren talk about ME brought a tear to my eye, it's never talked about, no one knows it exist and when you talk about they just think you're depressed meanwhile you can't even explain your symptoms due to the immense brain fog. Thank you for asking that questions and spreading awareness, it truly means a lot!
As another person that has all the weird syndromes that make doctors throw their hands up, I’m amazed at Ren. That he is able to do all that he does while dealing with health problems, he’s truly inspiring.
I just discoverd Ren about 3 hours ago, listened to about 10 songs from him and am now listening to this interview. I never experienced to love someones music so deeply and like it's creator so much in this short of time before..
idem moi hier incroyable ce jeune homme quel talent brillant génie très cultivé également et adorable on ne peu que l'aimé je lui souhaite tout le bonheur du monde longue vie 🙏👍👏💖🇫🇷
I'm 22 and unsure about my future because of depression and mental illness, just found out about Ren and pretty much wanted to be him when i get older. Amazing human being and you can clearly see he is 100 percent who he says he is. What a pure soul despite his challenges. You inspire us Ren!
I’m a 73yro female who has been following Ren for about a year The first I heard of him was in a musical review of Hi Ren. His lyrics are so captivating! The story behind the performance has made me appreciate “Hi Ren” even more! Thanks for asking the hard questions. I enjoyed your interview!!
I've now decided that the best interviews with musicians should be done by other musicians. You ask the best questions with the perfect amount of behind the scene/underground knowledge. Loved this so much, thank you!
Yep. 100%. You nailed it. I never really thought about that before this comment. D'uh. An experienced musician really can relate and ask the right questions. Consequentially, we can soak up the reality. So good. 👍🏻😀🇬🇧
I thought he was 27 from the Hi Ren video (and I was surprised he was as old as 27 too), my mind is blown... I didn't buy that he's a 90s kid but I guess he is.
As someone who battles and lives with chronic depression, general anxiety disorder and suicidal thoughts while holding down a job. I look up to Ren, I'm much older, but he is an inspiration for me. His music makes me feel like my thoughts are normalized. I'm thankful for that.
Same. It took my a long time to find formal words to call it but I was 10 the first time I realized thoughts of the later issue were not standard. The way he described a pendulum constantly swaying / an eternal dance at the end of Hi Ren really spoke for me as I have said something like that, though not so eloquently, many times years after I found the words to call it. Big difference is, when I first noted not a fight to win, I found it daunting to consider I would dance for the rest of my days in exhaustion. In time I did learn the dance but still felt that despair at the prospect. How he positioned it in that monologue shifted my mindset for the first time in (when do we start the clock?) years. I've done a lot of work to learn the dance but what his example did to shift my mindset is immeasurable by comparison.
About 3/4 in when answering the question about why people are drawn to your music. I think a big component is the vulnerability you make public, you are so personable and genuine in your communication through music that your fans build a bond through that vulnerability. They get to know you in a deeper sense as the outlet of all your termoile, but in return that makes them feel safe enough to reciprocate and share their stories with you. I think its a social contruct similar to the mirror neuron, people are seeing you bear your pain out in the open. They see that courage and they respect the sharing of that vulnerability, and that ends up a) why you get so many intense meet and greets, b) how so many people can become so deeply connected to you that all of the sudden every piece you have ever made is listened to and part of the shared journey.
I am a teacher in USA and sometimes when I can't sleep at night I just go through youtube music. I am in my 50's but love and respect authentic musicians. Stumbled onto Hi REN and was just blown away by how raw and painful it was and knew many of my middle school students probably would have really related to be torn mentally like this. Was really glad to find this interview and to see how healthy REN is now. Thank you for this
I'm also in my 50s and blown away by Ren's mad talents. I'm fascinated with the way Ren has affected such a wide range of people, noticeably others my age and upwards. So many shared the experience of watching Hey Ren for the first time, reacting in such an unexpected way as I did. I was utterly transfixed, mouth open from beginning to end. I've never been so viscerally moved on hearing a piece of music for the first time. The raw emotion in the song was tangible. You didn't just hear it, you felt it with every fibre of your being Magical...
I’m 61, but a teen at heart! Your students are so lucky. Ren is amazing. The fact that he appeals to all ages especially adults our age speaks volumes. I hope he realizes his dreams of the musical Netflix series! Someone needs to help him produce that!
What draws people to Ren is the absolute authenticity of his art. It's real, unapologetic, raw...in a world filled with performances, his art is decidedly raw truth, his truth sure, but there is empowerment in that.
In this world of fast media consumption and minute attention spans, I just devoured an entire 1 hour and 49 minute long interview like it was a hollywood blockbuster. I think that says a lot about you both.
As an Englishman living in beautiful Wales, I'm so chuffed that Ren is putting his country on the map. Ren is a genuine, down to earth genius who deserves every success he gets.
Brilliant interview just sat and watched the whole thing. As someone with chronic illness and autiummune diseases from a young age I was tearing up when hearing about your struggles because it is all so familiar, the lengths we have to go through to just try and get through it, how it can completely derail your life and the loss and mental health issues that go along with that. One of the most authentic discissions around it I've seen, thanks to Justin for providing such a calm space and thought provoking questions. It is very true that you are completely inspirational through your authenticity.
As a 56 year old, the hyperpolarization of the recent world has really taken a toll on my mental health and positivity. As many do, I struggle with the constant battle with depression, and had shut down most of the internets. Somehow a month ago, The Justin Hawkins channel showed up as a recommendation, and Hi Ren. I first got even more depressed that I feel like I've missed out on so much. The Darkness is insane! And Hi Ren had me in tears. Good tears. This interview and the two of you, beyond the music/art, have given me hope in humanity, and our compassion towards one anothe. I can't stop listening to The Darkness, so watch for those streaming pennies to go up this month amigo! Ren, can't wait for the Apple TV Ren produced original series! There is hope in the world. Through The Darkness, I found some light. Thank you both.❤
What a cracking interview! Thank you Justin 😊 Ren, your honesty is really touching. I think you will 100% fulfil your desire to get behind the camera. If Netflix have any sense they'll come knocking. Your music and talent is astoundlng and addictive. There are no average songs in your repertoire, and that's rare! Looking forward to Animal Flow 🔥
As a lady in my 50's that appreciate all genres of music and talent, Ren is my favorite, I only stumbled onto Ren after reinstalling RUclips about 3 weeks ago, love you Ren, you talent moves and inspire so many people, thank you for sharing yourself with the world. ❤😊😊❤
this was beautiful. Amazing to get an artist to artist interview come out so raw and authentic especially with artists from different generations, genres and backgrounds. Thanks to both Ren and Justin for being so honest, vulnerable and transparent
This was really well done. One thing I appreciate is that you let the guest answer the questions without interrupting. So many people doing interviews on youtube or podcasts seem more interested in hearing themselves speak. It was great hearing Ren explain his backstory because he is right, people tend to fill in the gaps with guesses instead of the facts. I'm glad he was able to tell it and I'm glad you gave him an opportunity to. Keep up the good work.
I thought so too - having the time to explain things and express thoughts! Thanks to both of you! Intelligent questions- answered in the best way. Ren: all the best for you 👍👏👏👏👍
He did let Ren answer for the most part, but he did interrupt him several times (started thinking he had "Oprah syndrome" ). Do appreciate the fact that Ren got to explain and get his story told for the most part :)
I've rarely enjoyed an interview as much as this one. i was riveted the whole time. Thank you! Most interviewers speak over their guests, interrupt them and ask redundant questions and it's so annoying.
Justin, thanks for interviewing Ren. You and he are amazing. Ren's words just tumble out of him, like he's in a hurry to say what he needs to say before he can say no more. He's intelligent, and has a very busy mind, which bodes well for us fans of Bardcore. I have Multiple Sclerosis, an auto-immune disease, so I understand the whole brain fog, pain and fatigue thing all too well. It makes me admire Ren all the more because those three symptoms(let alone the others)can make it difficult to have any sort of normal life. Yet, you could look at us and have no idea of the shit we wade through every day. So, if there is a god, please bless Ren and everyone else who lives with a chronic illness. And everybody reading this, too.
This boy is disarmingly genuine: such a massive artist and comprehensive mind one can just stare speechless at! God bless him, he's a true gift to mankind! ❤🔥
You are too Becca , love watching your reactions. They're always so insightful and real - its obvious how much of you it takes to put these out. So much respect ( and thanks) to you for doing so ❤
@@simonpowell8608 thank you, Simon, it really fills my soul to know people can enjoy and connect with them. Spent way too long doubting whether I had anything worthwhile to contribute to the world, or even to this space, but the reception has been totally surreal and I’m overwhelmed with gratitude.
Imagine if this interview had been performed by Jimmy Fallon instead, Ren wouldn't have gotten to finish a single sentence. Super chill interview and as many others said it's amazing how you gave Ren so much space for his thoughts and reflections. Great work!
Justin thank you soooo much for doing this interview. And also thank you Ren for giving your time. This was an amazing interview. I knew Ren came from Wales but I didn't realize just how small of a community he lived in. Just goes to show exactly how driven he is and I'm here for that. Best artist in the world in my eyes right now and the best is still yet to come. We all know it.
Definitely agree with you. Has to be the best current artist. So damn unique and versatile. All round amazing person, love all his stuff from the rap to the rock to the sheer storytelling ability.
@@johnsearing9736 I'm just halfway through this video and man does my heart go out him hearing about his illness and psychosis. I knew he'd been through some hardship but my god I'd no idea how bad he had it. He really is inspirational, to know he's gone through so much and still has blessed us with this unparalleled level of talent is beyond amazing. Like you said, a generational talent. The more youth that hear this man's story the better, it's the type of motivation a lot of people need to be exposed to. Including myself, it's really after putting some things in perspective for me.
Jean I hear you on that. I have epilepsy so it goes without saying when I come out of a seizure my brain is all over the place and when I'm at my most vulnerable ya know ?
As the mom of 2 musicians in the making (one is 19 and the other is 17), both of whom play guitar, the part about how Ren learned to play his guitar was absolutely fascinating.
Netflix - give this man a contract! I love your work Ren, it's mind-blowing performance art. To manage what you do, on top of your health challenges is awesome. Bravo 👏
Like a lot of people I'm coming to Ren later in his output and revelling in his back catalogue. And like most people I'm asking myself why I didn't find him earlier. Thank you Justin for displaying the sensitivity and understanding to let Ren express himself so eloquently. Both legends.
Since JH did this interview, Ren has become really quite famous and done a number of interviews with various reactors etc, but this is still hands down the best by far. I had no intention of listening again to JH interviewing Ren but it came on automatically via auto play whilst I was cooking supper and it’s just gripping. This is a brilliant interview, well done Justin as a fellow artist, I think you were given a window into Ren that no one else has managed to pass through.
As soon as I heard him talk about mirror neurons I jumped out of my seat. I love how well rounded his knowledge is. He is an amazing artist, you can see how much he research stuff on the clues he leaves in his videos, the iconography he uses, his quotes and rhymes. I'm so happy I discovered his music, like at the end of February, wish it happened sooner 'cause I haven't been this excited for an artist for a looooong time. I've spent the last months obsessing everyone I know about him.
Yea, And did you hear him talk about his reading? Aldus Huxley, George Orwell, Kurt Vonnegut. /his condition meant he had a lot of time on his hands but he clearly didn't waste it.
Hi Ren, I first came across you from Justin's Hi ren reaction. His video was choppy but full of praise which gave me a chance to watch on full for the first time when I had a bit of time to myself. The intelligence in writing both lyrically and musically was awe inspiring, telling of how a battle of Self-doubt and Self-worth being resolved with Self-acceptance. I was sold on on you as an artist. And started your rabbit hole. Then I watched the tale of Jenny and Screech in full and was blown away with your storytelling. Your ability to push boundaries on what a song could be reminded me of Pink Floyd and the performance was a Shakespearen tradigy for the modern era. And then I was a fan. Continuing down the rabbit hole I found your 'How to be me' performance with Chinchilla. What a performance that was. Now you are in my top five artists. Everything you have touched being with your solo work, collaborations with other artis or with your band The Big Push has always shown that you give it all 100%. This is a renaissance in music and with every rendition you will help pull through other artists to success in a new and modern world of musical freedom without lables.
This was riveting,Justin. Your interview technique allowed us to hear REN’s story in a really raw way. Maybe it’s the mom in me ,but I feel protective of this gentle genius. I hope he doesn’t allow himself to put the mental health struggles of the people who have found solace in his lyrics on his shoulders. I hope he can continue to draw boundaries with people who are facing a struggle. I’m happy his brilliant music has helped so many, but it seems so heavy to be held up as the voice for those who suffer. I don’t want to minimize his strength in any way, I just hope he can continue to separate himself from others mental heath journeys. That seems so daunting.
At around 20:25 when Ren starts talking about “seeing patterns” when he plays that’s such a neuro divergent trait that a lot of us have. It’s like a cool superpower thing especially when you recognize it and gain the ability to use it. Whether it’s ADHD, Autism or any other ND thing. For me at first it was all gobbledygook until the pieces started to click together like a giant jigsaw puzzle. Add the hyper focus and you begin to see how a lot of us are musicians, actors, dancers and emergency medical providers. We see things most don’t. Love the interview it was like two new friends getting to know each other and those are the best kind.❤
I have been fascinated to see the diversity of Ren fans. Particularly with Hi Ren, I see so many different people being equally touched by the song. It's a wonderful thing to behold, this reminder that we are all human.
It's funny that this video came out 10 months ago, but now it shows up in my algorithm after I recently discovered "Hi Ren." It's incredible to me to hear Ren basically confirm the feelings I get from that song. I have listened to it once a day since I first heard it. And what's weirder is, I went through something similar, yet different. In elementary school, I almost off-ed myself. And I told myself that if high school wound up worse than that, I would eventually go through with it... I had resigned myself to never living past 18yo. High School wound up being the best time of my life. I met my wife there. We have 3 kids and a quaint home near our family, so I am eternally grateful that I didn't... but it does leave me without answers in life, at my current age. I'm actually the same age as Ren (33-34). I never imagined what life would look like at this age. Ever. So, it's uncharted territory. It's exciting, sure, but it's also anxiety inducing. It's like taking the most difficult test in the world with absolutely no prep... Or, the easiest test in the world, but in a language you can't comprehend...
As a fellow long-term sufferer of ME/CFS I have to say that Ren's description and explanation of the experience and difficulty in getting a definitive diagnosis was spot on. 💫
With you on that. He’s got it so spot on. I only discovered him this morning; but he’s got a lifelong fan in me already! Sending you love on your ME/cfs journey.
Thanks for.this Justin!!! The fans that have known him since the begining, we have been waiting for someone to give Ren the credit he diserves! Thanks for your music Ren! 😊
As a massive fan of Ren whose artistry resonates with me, as it does for so many of us; it always humbles me when I see interviews with him and realise that I relate to him on such a personal level too. The ADHD, also being from a small welsh village, escaped to the city when i was in my teens but being overwhelmed with the big city of London, chronic illness and mental health issues... the biggest difference is that finding Ren's music has contributed massively to my recovery from those things. He's more than a musician. More than an artist even. He's an inspiration and I'm so grateful to have found his work. Ren, you will eternally have my gratitude. Thank you 🫶
I love Ren.... the raw genuine emotion he brings makes you want to connect to him. He is transparent and real.... in a very fake world he is gold. Brilliant interview. Loving Justin too. 😉
Ren, you're getting bs from your doctor's office. It is incurable. Period. I take tons of antihistamines, and I have the allergy symptoms. I will be 60 in September. Had Lyme 23 years and all my expert said it couldn't be cured any longer......so sleep 15 hours a night, eat healthy and avoid stress. And he really is an expert on Lyme. 2 blood tests are required for a real diagnosis is an IGg and an iGm. Then you have to find a specialty lab to do the work . Have you been to the USA? All the experts are here. And Ren, you're going to live beyond 50 years. I'm still here! Maybe because I sleep a lot, I don't know. See an infectious disease doctor. You need narcotics for the pain, and accept your fate, as I have done. Just trying to help, honey.
Elizabeth of the “Charismatic Voice”, a classically trained professional opera singer, and a lover of all kinds of singing voices, had said something about Ren’s classical guitar style. She said that it was classical in form and structure, whether he was aware of it or not. As a visual artist myself, the discussion of the artist’s intention fascinates me. It's even more prevalent in music where the listener brings their own meanings and emotions to the song. Or, what makes a composition classical? This a great interview. Ren should also sit down and talk with Elizabeth. I believe that you have had tea with Elizabeth, haven't you?
Thanks to you and Ren for giving us fans a tasty treat. I think we all appreciate getting to know Ren's story and influence and what inspires him. Justin, you are a big, kind hearted bloke... With every episode of yours I watch, I become more convinced, you're just a big softy. 🥰❤️🙏🏽 Thank you both so much for sharing this with us.
Ive actually never heard of Ren, but ill definitely check him out. Seems like a cool, genuine guy. Ive been there with the health issues and intense fatigue, and all i can say is its incredible that he got through it and got back to his career.
He’s absolutely amazing I found him recently, and his range of talents leaves me awestruck and him being such a humble real person just makes it all so much better

Ren, I’m a songwriter just coming into my own at age “61.” I put off my music passion for years, by chasing money, and my career. I spent 22 years as a school counselor, so your Hi Ren video resonated with me on multiple levels. I had an empathetic response and connective reaction to your craft. I love creating music. I’ve shared your video with friends…some who just don’t get it. I do. It’s interesting about feeling you need to make it before age 30. Hopefully I’ll break that stereotype. Love your stuff!
Jim, I just wanted to chime in here. I think too many people talk themselves out of chasing their dreams because of the stigma of age. Someone who has avoided chasing their dreams for years or decades is also likely to adopt the false narrative of "being past their time" as it sadly gives them an excuse accepted by society for why they shouldn't try. I think more than anything, that is probably why it might not be seen as much. So the false narrative becomes perpetual. Bravo to you for rejecting that excuse. Stay positive in your dialogue with yourself. Self encouragement is often the secret sauce that separates those that push through, and those that dont. And I think the interview we just watched confirms the value, level of impact, and the real need for authenticity. Be you in all your glory. People are starved for authenticity. When someone like Ren comes along and is transparent in their craft, and boldly vulnerable, it ignites something in people that attracts them and draws them in. They notice something authentic, something relatable. And they feel driven to explore the source of that authenticity, not only to learn more about the artist or individual, but to learn more about themselves. Write for yourself. Create what you feel in your heart. I wish you the best of luck. The universe is cheering you on. Never forget that.
@3dChris What a warm, intelligent and encouraging comment you made to Jim. And I agree with your view wholeheartedly. This sometimes hostile world needs more people like you in it, Chris. All the best, mate.
@@TVC15ohoh Wow, thank you so much. That was such a touching comment. Thank you for taking the time to say that. I truly believe we are all one. We are the universe becoming aware of itself, experiencing itself, through each of our individual perspectives. At the root, we are one consciousness. So you helping someone else is the same as you helping me. That’s why when we do random acts of kindness it actually makes ourselves feel the love. It’s all reciprocal. Your kind words written to me are just as much of a reflection of yourself as well. Give someone a hug today. Keep that vibe flowing. ;)
This is just brilliant, Ren just putting out himself so transparently, telling the full story of his early years (as much as he can in a limited time), showing how much of an introvert he is (it is more obvious now since he is being interviewed, rather than hosting so he doesn't need to be engaging, don't be fooled by the machine gun talking, focus on the way that he talks, as if he is explaining it to himself really, and reassessing his past analysis on the subject). And how deep he thinks about everything (one can assume that he is more of a guy driven by emotions because of his music but the way he combines this with thinking and scientific facts etc.), just brilliant.
Yeah I was picking up on how much he was avoiding looking at the camera when he spoke. Then he was talking about how introverted he is as a person and it made perfect sense to me. It's wild cos I would've never pinned him as an introvert from the way he acts in his music videos. Just proves that Justin was correct saying that he would make a great actor.
@@himynameis3664 I noticed this too. Super interesting! And as a fellow introverted ADHD person I realize I do this as well, partly because looking at someone when talking/explaining stuff easily makes me lose my track of thought due to that extra stimuli, which can be very distracting. I've found that some people take it the wrong way though and interpret it as being uninterested/rude which is unfortunate.
@@jennythescreech Sorry to hear you suffer with your ADHD. I have pretty bad epilepsy and it's just such a pain having to account for it before I plan anything. @@jennythescreech oh thank you Jenny! You just fitted in another piece of the ADHD puzzle for me. I'm 58yo and only recently diagnosed with ADHD and ASD and still learning to understand some things.
I guess when you're writing music and as obsessed with it as he is you're bound to gain so much general knowledge in anything from just vocabulary to researching things to write about. Btw I'm not saying it's a bad thing just in case it comes across that way, I love Ren's music and he seems like a great person to talk to.
Excellent interview from two legends. I was diagnosed with CFS after a nasty case of glandula fever. It was horrible and took away a good 2 years of my life. I was almost medically retired from a steady job at the ripe old age of 21. Even now, 20 odd years later my body struggles to fight the common cold sometimes without exhaustion. It sucks. I ended up going through CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) which gave me coping mechanisms which I use to this day. Ren is an amazing dude to have gone through all this and still made himself the success he has. Thanks for this video. Much love to all.
Was an absolute pleasure chatting to you Mr Hawkins!! Thanks for having me

So excited for this interview ❤
Such a creative and original young man. Like nothing I've ever heard before. Thanks, Ren
Ren you are Amazing ,I love you ❤❤❤
I knew Ren growing up when we were very young and I can say with great confidence he is exactly who he says he is, I think that is a factor why his music is doing so well.
Love this comment ❤
Yeah my five year old is also as in love with REN’s art as I. She really takes in the words and explains her interpretations to me, especially about money, she blew my mind telling me “Mummy REN is saying some people have lots of money like daddy, and they might not be very nice, and some people have not much money like you, and that’s not fair, people should share more”. A beautiful, innocent child’s interpretation of RENs words. He can reach the heart of a child and mother equally. She always asks me if he is still poorly too. I hope REN knows how many hearts he touches and he even has 5 year olds checking on his health journey.

Spot on
True ‼️
I also believe it’s the small village upbringing that creates people like Ren. They aren’t all caught up in the glitz and glamour and bullshit of big cities
Well done Justin. You gave Ren space to talk. A rare thing.
Totally agree.
Haha so true so many interviews with him I’ve seen just have the host talking for 50% of the time lol
Complete honesty, clarity of thought and intelligence. This was a magnetically riveting watch, which crossed the complete emotional circumference for me. Thanks so much Ren and Justin for a discussion which will long resonate with me.

The fact that Ren called Justin ‘Mr. Hawkins’ has slain me 😊

I'm impressed at Justin's laid back interview, just letting Ren tell his story, top class!
That's because he genuinely wanted to hear his story!! ❤
while interrupting him every other sentence? lol
@@gypsysouldier yet, ren only did it once, and said "pardon me" afterwards
@Quietus Forgotten absolutely. Ren was a guest on Justin's show and respected that dynamic. There is a decent age difference between the two. I feel like Justin respects Ren's musicianship, and after a point in the interview, he really wanted to just shoot the shit with Ren as an equal. Ren being younger than Justin, and maybe not used to that level of recognition recorded for the world to see acted like the humble person that he is.
Ren is a once in a generation talent. What an absolute treat to hear from the man himself!

This was really well done. One thing I appreciate is that you let the guest answer the questions without interrupting. So many people doing interviews on youtube or podcasts seem more interested in hearing themselves speak.
I'm biased but that was the most enthralling interview I've seen in 48 years.
In what respect are you biased?
@@GenaF in that I am a huge ren fan in the first place
@@Paul-gr1jz Ok, I thought you were going to say you were a family member or something.
Bias???? Must be related.
This boy is disarmingly genuine: such a massive artist and comprehensive mind one can just stare speechless at! God bless him, he's a true gift to mankind! ❤🔥
You’re such an amazing soul, Ren. This world is better because you’re in it.
Thanks for the awesome interview with your two great minds!
Wow, thank you so much! Your kindness is incredible xx
😲
Imagine if this interview had been performed by Jimmy Fallon instead, Ren wouldn't have gotten to finish a single sentence. Super chill interview and as many others said it's amazing how you gave Ren so much space for his thoughts and reflections. Great work!
And now it’s time to spin the wheel! “Okay, single the Folgers jingle as Sting!” Actually Ren would probably kill that assignment lol
Or that Morning Joe guy! He is the worst!
Couldn't agree more . Generational talent is what I tell my family n friends.
Having ADHD myself I’m always interested in how people find workarounds. Sort of like I know the ending how do I get there 😂
Jean I hear you on that.
Especially the "shapes" the music makes, eg "This sound looks like Wales"😮
Netflix - give this man a contract! I love your work Ren, it's mind-blowing performance art. To manage what you do, on top of your health challenges is awesome. Bravo 👏
Like a lot of people I'm coming to Ren later in his output and revelling in his back catalogue. And like most people I'm asking myself why I didn't find him earlier. Thank you Justin for displaying the sensitivity and understanding to let Ren express himself so eloquently. Both legends.
Ren is so articulate, intelligent and funny, i honestly could listen to him talk about anything
Someone said he could sing the Telephone Directory and make it sound amazing. I think he could read from it and I'd be just as captivated lol
Yes, lol! We need him to record Bedtime Stories by Ren. Would be a best seller. 😄
Ren has so much to say. He will be writing lyrics for many years to come ✨️
As soon as I heard him talk about mirror neurons I jumped out of my seat.
@@briankeniry219 yeeessss!! that's it. You said that, he didn't waisted his time.
I'm so inspired by his strength, Ren is out of this world for real.
Mr. Hawkins, I agree Ren would make a brilliant actor!
Awesome to see Ren getting this respect. Much love, Justin.
💫
Agreed!
Sending love and light your way! ❤
I have Late Stage Chronic Lyme.
So much falls under the same umbrella.
With you on that. He’s got it so spot on. I only discovered him this morning; but he’s got a lifelong fan in me already!
Sending you love on your ME/cfs journey.
100% I have fibromyalgia and he really did speak my mind. Almost teared up it was so accurate
Thanks for.this Justin!!! The fans that have known him since the begining, we have been waiting for someone to give Ren the credit he diserves! Thanks for your music Ren! 😊
Authenticity, you can’t fake it, although people try, this guy just delivers everything honestly and I’m sold.
As a massive fan of Ren whose artistry resonates with me, as it does for so many of us; it always humbles me when I see interviews with him and realise that I relate to him on such a personal level too. The ADHD, also being from a small welsh village, escaped to the city when i was in my teens but being overwhelmed with the big city of London, chronic illness and mental health issues... the biggest difference is that finding Ren's music has contributed massively
to my recovery from those things. He's more than a musician. More than an artist even. He's an inspiration and I'm so grateful to have found his work. Ren, you will eternally have my gratitude. Thank you 🫶
Beautifully said ❤
You really got some good mileage out of your punctuation mark keys there
I love someone that can throw a semicolon in the mix tbh.
Lovely comment 😊
I hope you are doing well Cassandra and are in a good place within yourself. We are all here as kindred spirits of Ren. Take care sweetheart 😊
I first encountered Ren thanks to Justin, and now he brings us all this! Thanks, Justin!
Same!
Hear ya bro!!! Not watched it yet but buzzin at how amazing this is!!!

So whaddya think?😊
Great interview. For me Ren is going to become the greatest artist of all time and more importantly he’s “Humble “
Thanks to my own ADHD it will probably take me 5 or 6 occasions to watch this interview in full! 😁
@@gdn101 we are all one family. We are all one. Thank you so much for your kind words. That really means a lot.

Keep that vibe flowing. ;)
How can anyone be this amazing, talented and down to earth.
If only everybody listened to each other with such respect, wisdom and empathy.
My feeling exactly. Well put, Carrie.
Thank you for this. So special.
This is a good juicy chunk of backstory. Thanks you two. This was marvelous.
What an utter pleasure that was. A very inspiring skilled articulate and amazing human being Ren is. Thank you Justin and thank you Ren.
It is incredibly exhausting constantly battling your own mind 😢❤
So many jobs I can't be employed in, haven't been able get a driving license and just some general things most people would take for granted. Any illness of the mind sucks so much so I feel for you. Truly hope you can find some comfort for yourself ❤️🙏

I fucking cannot get over how deeply intelligent Ren is. So insightful yet so humble.
Brilliant interview. The two of you seemed extremely comfortable with each other.
