Hi Justin, it was you and your channel which introduced me to Hi Ren! For that I am very grateful! I started watching your channel after I lost my youngest brother last October when he decided to end it. He was 20 years my junior but we were close and as you can imagine it crushed me. When he was a teen he introduced me to you and The Darkness, your style and flair resonated with him and he carried that look of a rockstar might have, throughout his adult years. So after coming across your channel, I somehow felt closer to my brother. My brother always thought you and The Darkness were legends and I have to admit I have started to listen to your music much more lately.
I love your channel and your reactions to Ren, and so thank you for introducing me to his work. The first was Hi Ren and I paused your video, found Rens channel and watched it in its entirety, he reduced me to tears with his raw and conflicting emotions as well as his performance and delivery. I then went back to your channel and finished watching your reaction, and I found myself in complete agreement with you.

I got bit by a tick when I was 11 years old. Long before Lyme disease was even a word. Long before Epstein-Barr was labeled a medical condition or fibromyalgia was a term. I had no idea how to explain any of this to people or the long lasting side effects I've dealt with for the last half century and out of the blue this British dude with the funny hair cut shows up on my RUclips and I hear Sick Boi and it not only blows me away with his talent but he understands what I've been through and articulates what I've failed to say.
Lyme disease has been a word since 1975 and the earliest detailed writings about diseases contracted from ticks have been around since the 18th century….
I don't think Ren taking down the song has something to do with the Bulgarian choir .. at least not directly. My understanding is that Ren already paid 15% to the choir (as they requested) because Kujobeats refused to absorb that. In any case the Bulgarian choir did not strike the song, Kujobeats did because he wants to engage Ren in a legal battle. And Ren simply removed the song to avoid that.

hi ren led to my self realization when i reached the end of my rope with burnout... led me to get help, got my self diagnosis of adhd and comorbidities, after a year long process, confirmed by dr's last week and at 46 just started adhd meds (and my god what a difference). i was literally watching and listening to Hi Ren for the first time last september and something inside snapped, i mean physically i could feel it. i always heard people say how a song/artist saved them and always thought it kinda melodramatic, but i know now what other's have meant.... and sick boi fckn resonated too... fck kujobeats and his greed.

Something that is missed in this summary is that it was Kujo's people that struck down the Sick Boi music video on RUclips. They exploited the way RUclips favours claimants over creators to hold the video hostage. This was their leverage in trying to negotiate some big pay day for Kujo. Ren took the song off streaming after this happened.
The striking of the video appears to be the first shot fired in this dispute. Ren claims that Kujo and his lawyers didn't contact him at all before striking the video and saying it was "the only way to get his attention."
The first shot fired was Kujo not being paid his royalties, Ren freely admitted that but said it was 'down to his team', which dragged on for months. Unfortunately this is a very one-sided argument, people think Ren can do no wrong. As for favouring claimants over creators, Kujo is the creator too. Without his beat, there is no song. If you want to avoid these situations, don't be lazy and produce your own beats. I'm a fan of Ren's music, but based on that the world has decided Ren is an angel and Kujo is a dick, but no-one is stopping to consider whether Ren might be one too and what they would do if one of their beats went big and they weren't getting paid what they were due.
Going of what was made public (I’m aware we might not have the full picture); Kujo didn’t get his publishing money, because he sold a sample that was not cleared (which is a breach of contract). The people who own the rights to that sample (Bulgarian choir) claimed his publishing money, rightly so. This is between the production companies and the publishers. Ren has nothing to do with this because he bought an unlimited license. Kujo now tries to get money from Ren for his money problems and that is where this whole shit show starts. Ren stated that he agrees that Kujo should get his publishing money, but doesn’t legally have any rights to masters profits.
Oh and the copy right strike was illegal. Watch a few music lawyers reactions on this. Ren could sue for this.
@@arlasoft Ren talked about this, and he contacted the publishers to let them know that there was a problem. Kujo will definitely be reimbursed for the money that wasn't paid due to an error on the publisher's part. That wasn't Ren, but he did takes steps to try to get it fixed, because Ren agrees that Kujo should be paid for his work. I think the reason people have decided that Kujo is a dick is because Kujo filed a copyright strike on Ren's video, and because the sample he used was stolen, and because he suddenly wanted a cut of the master, which was never part of the original agreement. And I personally think that Kujo is an idiot for turning down Ren's offer to create a new track and split it 50/50.

@@arlasoft kujo not being paid had absolutely nothing to do with Ren or his team - it was the publisher's mistake, which is now being rectified. As for "without the beat there is no song "????? Are you serious? Kujo made an awesome beat for sure (unfortunately with a stolen sample), but there would not be a song without Ren's arrangement & lyrics - lyrics that he poured his whole soul into!!!! And just to show that Kujo's beat isn't essential to the song, Ren will be re releasing the song with his own beat on Oct 13. As for only hearing 1 side - Ren has repeatedly asked Kujo to share his side. Last week, Kujo "threatened " to release his side of the whole mess, with screenshots that he claimed would expose Ren. The date that he said he would do this has come and gone and - crickets.
A Justin and Ren collab would be insane!
I've already watched Kujo Beat Down a few times, and... it's in the queue to watch again. The numbers are growing! Over half a million views already, and I expect it'll be well beyond that before too very long. :)

Ren is almost the exact opposite of what I would normally listen to, but somehow he's incredible all the same. Can't remember if I discovered him here or via The Charismatic Voice (I'm off there next), but I'm glad I did.
And then I'll be (mostly) back in the '70s & '80s like usual.
Have you ever heard his busking? He does a lot of covers, Bob Marley, the police, soul Motown and when it's full band outdoor gig the musicianship is top class! I haven't had the chance to spend a lot of time catching up but in interviews Ren has said that this is his 1st full rap heavy album and he has a gorgeous voice so i'm looking forward to discovering that Ren too! (Then I'll go back to my 70s 80s 90s! Lol!

He's a young man doing great things with his music and i was extremely disappointed to hear what happened.
I have seen alot of artist make these types of videos, but i hve been following Rens musics/life updates for the past few years and like millions of other people have come to understand the person he is. Seeing him breaking down when he was explaining the impact Sick Boi had on him and many many other people (myself included) was a genuinely heartbreaking experience and i cant even imagine the pain and trauma that it has caused ren.

Thank you Justin. There are so many out there chasing after every breadcrumb to feast on. This is not just a song to Ren, you apparently see it is his heart.
Back in the day the Fugees sampled Enya without permission, and she considered sueing but after hearing the song decided to just come to a settlement with them. Wyclef even said how awesome she was about it when she didn't have to be. There are ways to solve this where everyone comes out on top!
And then there's the kujo way.

@@jodiegordon5559 what does that matter? The Score was the best selling album in the US in 1996. Ready or not, the track which featured the sample was also a huge success as a single. She could have taken pretty much all the proceeds from all of that, but chose not to.

Being supportive to Ren is also realizing that choosing his health, which is already compromised, is NOT “rolling over”. It’s self care. He isn’t allowing the stress from this situation to affect him to the point where all the work he has done, and all the efforts at the treatment center he was at when this whole Kujo Beats situation went down, will be undone by someone trying to elevate their status by bringing him down.
Are people really forgetting Ren’s health struggles because he’s been appearing healthy lately?!
Its not always easy for everyone to understand.
They see him well yet often don't realise that there is a fine balance to avoiding a crash.
Best decision for his health.

However, people seem to be forgetting completely rather than his health struggles simply being out of their comprehension. There seems to be a fine line that chronically ill people have to tread in regards to posting things online... Either you post your difficulties with your health & people tell you that it’s all you post or that you’ve made your health issues your whole personality, or you don’t post as much (or even go as far as posting only the good days) & people assume you’re completely fine. A conversation surrounding a song entitled Sick Boi that ignores the subject matter of the song when questioning why the artist “rolled over” is quite frankly tone deaf.

@@Threadbow It’s the phrasing that bothers me & saying he didn’t know why Ren would roll over. If he’s been in contact before this video was posted that makes it worse bc I’m sure Ren explained this all started going down when he was getting treatment in Canada. I have nothing against Justin & I’m sure he’s been helpful with resources, I just feel that when a person has a large following they need to be more mindful of the language they used. That phrase in particular has been used in the comments a few times, & it’s going to be repeated in conjunction with Ren’s name. With everything he’s gone through & continues to go through, anything that implies giving up should definitely not be associated with Ren.

Pretty sure that he's going to use the Bulgarian choir parts and pay them properly for it... best way to stick two fingers up to Kujobeats. Remake it exactly as original except for the parts by Kujo. :D
@@catsandcrafts171actually Ren discussed this over on his twitch channel earlier this evening and basically said he won’t be using the Bulgarian choir on moral grounds or words to that effect… apparently even if the people who own it get their cut there’s no guarantee the actual choir would get a fair share. He’s apparently not decided exactly what he’s doing but has several good options up his sleeve all created by him and him alone.

Hi Justin late response from me. So glad to see a long time UK Musician of your calibre weighing in on such a serious topic. Have done gig promoting 30 odd years ago with my wife we fully understand how much of a grey area it can be. Artists and Bands playing covers live without permissions (story for another time) etc. Today its difficult to be original and sometimes using a prop can make things a bit easier but through the legal system is the best way. Gentlemanly handshakes and fist bumps are definitely not the way. Good Luck with the new album will be keeping my ear out. ❤ JL

If you're not sure why Ren rolled over, I'd recommend after doing your own reaction the Kujo Beat Down, watching Knox Hill's reaction.
Knox is another rapper, albeit American, who's independent and very good but he also does reactions. He was a part of Ren's set during SGP this year, and spent a lot of time with Ren while the legal back and forth was happening. He gives a lot of insight into Ren's stress levels and what have you, at the time.
I don’t think most people realize how exhausting it is dealing with health issues and then having a major stressor occur on top of that. I hate that people are saying Ren “rolled over” when he did as much as he could to rectify the situation and kept being met with opposition. It isn’t good for his health & the treatment he had just received to put himself under so much stress. Taking a step back to come up with a different solution so that he doesn’t run himself back into a horrible health situation again isn’t rolling over, he’s proactively choosing his health over this drama. People are clearly not taking into account Ren’s health issues & considering “Hi Ren” is how most people came across his music, that’s a shame.
@@xeaux I don't necessarily think it's a case of intent in not taking them into account. Unfortunately, and I say this as someone who's also chronically ill but actually very functional mostly, it's very easy for people who don't deal with invisible, chronic illness to just presume people who seem functional... *Are*. We're not really, it's all a front. We have vast, complicated, difficult and awkward coping strategies and complex needs to take into account. So yes, you're right, everything takes so much more energy and effort.
Additionally, the term "rolled over" in this instance, I don't believe has a disrespectful intent either. I think it's a different era of language crossing over here, with a slightly different subtext than we'd expect now if someone says "you rolled". I think it's a shame that Ren took Sick Boi down because he'd have been within his rights to take Kujo to court over it. But, he wanted to redo it HIS way. That isn't rolling over, that's going "right, fuck this, fuck you, I'm doing it so it's MINE".

Ren took Sick Boi off all streaming platforms _after_ Kujo copyright claimed it and had it pulled from RUclips. Ren has to fight that (or should, because he’d win), but he didn’t “roll over”. He chose his battle. He chose to make a 100% Ren version of Sick Boi.
@@SuziQ. I know. Literally said that. The reason I pointed Justin to Knox is because Knox doesn't share too much of Ren's health info but makes how he was about it all, while it was happening, very clear. Jfc.
