- It's finally here. Pat Finnerty has decided to join me here on Justin Hawkins Rides Again. Myself and @pat_finnerty go back a long time and have many an anecdote about each other. This is a really great conversation. If you enjoy Pat's work you'll love it, if you've never heard of him before...you're going to love him. Check out his RUclips channel here: / @pat_finnerty

You should just have an ongoing podcast show with Pat! Like once a month or whatever. It was a joy to listen to you both!
I agree the chemistry is palpable
I think once every 60 days
I second this motion.
So glad to have found this. Titans right here.
100 percent
Fun fact Pat Finnerty is how I found JHRA. Justin made an appearance in the video and searched and found this channel.
Which Video was that? Would love to watch it :)
@@reginawitvrouwen-kuehn4824 It was the second 'What Makes This Song Stink,' taking apart Kid Rock's 'All Summer Long,' as mentioned in the interview:

Same here
Welcome, you’ll have fun here!!
Ditto!
The first historical reference to Hog Ride. Outstanding.
"the next bullshit country song I do a video on" little did he know what he was in store for lmao
Pat casually dropping a Beato has made my Monday un-shit.
It felt less casual and more....instinct or second nature at this point LOL it was like a tic!
He's playing a flat 7 over the 4 chord implying an add11#. Beato
timestamp?
6 months later, and it also made my Monday better
As a person of a certain age I can completely relate to this content/art. You guys are made for this medium.
don't say that dirty ass word...content 🤮
That sneaky "Beato" in there was just gold. Made me smile... thanks for this, you two!!
That Starburst analogy was genuinely profound. This is why we love Pat.
We ride for pat because he represents us and doctors it up with humor he’s like a civil liaison between musicians true music lovers terrible bands and their followers and isn’t afraid to be blunt without crossing into their bs he’s like the boondock saints without the killing but a step to calling bs and explaining why and making you laugh. IT’s balance we desperately need and was a Covid life saver. Pat is a dude and if you’ve never heard him say BIGG SHOWW your life probably needs to be tightened up. Pats the real deal. Plus Larry and Kim and BTGG so many fantastic people that are the best of us and we can relate rejoice and release years of agony and torture
Love you both
Blinds to Go Guy is my all time favorite side character. That conversation they had about Boston Market and how they have a tough road ahead absolutely destroyed me and I still think about it and it cracks me up every time lol.
@@eggoslayer1001 absolutely! Pat has a great community! I wish we’d do more all nighter campaigns for random interviews. My favorite was the US MAP and watching him check off states
“Stop Draggin My Heart Around” with Petty and Nicks is quite a good duet methinks!
That was the first one I thought of.
First single I bought with my own money at 10 years old! Still love the song.
shoot you beat me to it. i just commented before reading
Tom and stevie "insider" on Hard Promises is even better
Just jumped on here to say exactly this. Only to see someone beat me to it. Well done.
The crossover we've all been waiting for. We'll never get that Miles Davis/Jimi Hendrix side project, but at least we have this.
Amazing to hear an early draft of the smash hit Hog Ride
How did I miss this!? Pat is such a dry chuckle and really quite an exceptional mind - his references blow mine! x
You two should probably do this regularly. It's a wonderful listen.
The shitegeist podcast. I'm in.
Two of the best music RUclipsrs team up... yes!
I agree.
I just have a blast watching Pat in any format. I subbed to Justin after watching him in that early Pat video because I didn't know about the channel so that was a gift that keeps on giving.
He's 100% correct when he says people "Don't even listen to their friends albums". Months of work put into something that 10's of people actually check out after it's released.
absolutely loving this. and regarding the starburst thing around 37:00 it put me in mind of Beavis & Butthead on Radioheads Creep. Beavis asks “How come they don’t just, like, play that cool part through the whole song?” Buttheads consise analogy “Well Beavis, if they didn’t have a part of the song that sucked, then it’s like, the other part wouldn’t be as cool.” See, even Butthead gets it 🙂
"Uhhh, well, if nothing sucked, and everything was cool all the time, then, like, how would you know it was cool?"
@@f0rth3l0v30fchr15tThat's what happens in the West, with just about every generation since industrialisation - things keep getting better... the bottom 20% of indoor toilets in America suck! But they're better than the top 20% of outhouses were. It's just that people in America today have only dealt with outhouses as a novelty, so we think some indoor plumbing sucks! Little do we know...
Beavis and Butthead is the easiest way to explain John Keats' notion of "negative capability" Mind you that notion isn't original to me, but I've yet to track down the original article or essay that originally put it forth, otherwise I would cite it... X D
@@GizzyDillespeeI would argue the best 20% of outhouses are way better than the worst indoor toilets, ie truckstops. Growing up we had an awesome dunny that looked out over the valley of our farm, with fruit trees screening you from the house and often the cows would come right up to the gate to check out what you were up to 😅
Real fans remember when this was titled, "F*** YOU PAT FINNERTY!!"
This is so great ... the bit about musicians/band having to serve up "content" .. and people slurping it up but not checking out the album you spent months/years creating.
Welcome to the dystopian nightmare that is the 2020's...
Calling music curated and created with care and intent "product" or "content" is just plain ol' cunty. I met a number of radio execs and a few label weasles that called music "products": Cunts.
It occurs to me that only pat song I've heard in full it wayo wayo... I should change that.
Yeah its really weird. Ive noticed some of my favourite bands have started doing this, releasing song after song on Spotify in a trickle-feed rather than a whole album all once, and the worst thing is, it works! I've noticed I'm more likely to click and listen if its a single song rather than an album. And multi-song releases are most often EPs with just a handful of songs and remixes, not LPs. Our attention spans are the casualty of social media and it sucks 😑
@@rhythmandblues_alibiShort attention spans Due to literally being trickle fed everything. It can be easily corrected. Get an mp3 player, put your phone in an annoyingly unreachable place. Lay in bed, and just listen to an album.
I tell you what's a great prechorus: Mandinka. "I don't know no shame, I feel no pain, I can't see the flame". Bloody brilliant.
Pat is one of the naturally funniest people on RUclips, but also clearly knowledgeable about music. I loved this interview. His WMTSS series was a revelation, I had not laughed so much and so hard at something in a long while.
I know they're just mates mucking around having a chat but Islands In The Stream, Whenever I call You Friend, Don't Go Breaking My Heart, You're the one that i want, don't let the sun go down on me, i knew you were waiting for me, etc. etc. I love a duet!
Painfully awaiting the next episode with Finnerty! Best ever Rides Again!
You guys have great energy together. I have watched both podcasts and I think the two of you create a vibe that adds up to more than the sum of its parts.... if that makes sense. You might want to think about a regular thing.
Spectacular. You two are so intelligent and have such wit and style and fit it all together into a mad eccentric genius art form all its own.
That was simply the best music exchange between two honestly funny and talented guys! Loved this episode 🙌 the cashew backstage story by Pat had me cracking 😅
An only Frankie story episode would be hilarious!🤣
Just when you think it could not get any better. WOW! Monday’s with JHRA are like Christmas morning, filled with joyous wonderment. Thank you ❤
This was brilliant. We need a regular podcast from you 2!
August has fallen. Wish I could like this 50 times.
by far, the coolest podcast you've made so far. What an entertaining convo!
I absotively loved this...what a double act you guys are. You MUST record that Shitegiest writing sesh and share it with us all.
Please make this a regular feature on your channels. This just tickles my brain box!😊
Pat and Justin singing A Whole New World is the stuff I need more in my life.
Complete with a little Feargal Sharkey waiver in his voice and all!
My friend bought ten pounds of only red and pink Starbursts and got sick of them damn quick. This is the greatest analogy for the modern music industry I've heard.
I LOVED that episode, I was drawn in for the entire thing, what fun! Dying to hear the song you guys write, you must perform it😂
Love Pat, great idea for a guest!
Edit - That was really a brilliant watch, so much fun. Hope you two do this again at some point
Patt Finnerty's worst Lenny Kravitz superbowl video absolutely dropped me, I cried laughing.
Justin + Pat = the world as it should be
Straight up my new favorite bromance lol. These dudes are great.
Thats the natural order of things.
Found this 1 year later, just a great yarn between 2 great fellas that love their music, banter and great humour. Thanks for a great cast guys 🤘
I feel bad for the people skipping this one because they don’t know who Pat is. I wish people gave more things a chance. Even though I watch Pat and love his videos this is such a great conversation. They’re both not only super talented but so funny. This was just a great time.
I’m really enjoying Justin’s long form videos. Talking about everything under the sun that affects us as humans and not just music. Makes things more interesting. I just have such a deep appreciation for Justin Hawkins and I’m glad I took a chance and gave you a listen over a year ago when he was unknown to me.
One more great rock duet: Stop Draggin My Heart Around
I loved this. You're both really amiable and interesting to listen to. Thanks!
this is my new favorite J-Hawk offering. Such insightful conversation. And, you and Pat have made me put Dire Straits on to play.
I can’t believe I watched the entire video in one sitting! So good. Shite-Geist is brilliant and encapsulates everything going on in music and frankly our world right now! When you said Bohemian Rhapsody you were right on. But after some thought I’m thinking rock opera like Tommy. Can’t wait to hear it! ❤
This was absolutely marvelous. I can't be the only one who reveres Frusciante because of his solo work. Love that guy. While I was taken aback by the panning of the Silver Sky (it's a fantastic guitar), I like that J-Hawk put the word "rock' in it. Finally, thank you for so much Knopfler. Every minute of this was remarkable.
Frusciante has the technical ability. While he loves Hendrix and Jimmy Page, he said that stuff had already been done (and to the max) so he wanted to explore other musical avenues. He enjoyed "textural players" (pretty sure Bernard Sumner was one example he gave) and he tried to imagine their limits as guitar players do his best while playing within those limitations.
He's a very interesting interview, btw. Definitely worth checking out (especially during his 2nd stint in the band - like 1999-2006).
I love Frusciante, although I've noticed in a lot of his recent solos, he tends to just hold the bend and doesn't take it anywhere. However, he's still one of my faves. His playing on BSSM is amazing
Justin, I’ve been listening to AC/DC since the seventies, and still don’t understand/know the lyrics to “Back in Black,” or most AC/DC songs. They’re one of those bands you just mumble-sing to.
Btw, you were brilliant with Wolf (and you nailed “Under Pressure”!)
I would love to see you interview Wolf about his music. The second Mammoth WVH album is going to drop in August. I saw him on the tour of his first album. He’s an amazing musician, and frontman, with a beautiful voice. Van Halen songs don’t do his voice justice, but “Epiphany,” “Circles,” “Distance” and his other songs do.
i love "Distance". It makes me think of my own Dad that I lost in 2013 due to mouth and throat cancer. But more importantly, it came out at just the right time to comfort SO many that lost their loved ones due to Covid.
Pat is right. Don’t carry that around. You were magnificent!!!
"Even in the future nothing works." 1:05ish space ball?!
Actually watched the whole thing in one go, crazy. Also “no good rock has ever been played on a PRS” ❤❤❤
Think he was talking about John Mayer or Santana? :D
Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around: a rock duet paragon? Ir's got everything good. M/F vocals in the same register, high school lyrics, indiscriminate bridge modulation, backup singer "ahhhs" all over the place, and even two bars of quarter note played on the bell of the ride cymbal. Smooth as a #10 can of liquid nacho cheese sauce.
I discovered your channel through What Makes This Song Stink!!❤️
Same here!
Me too! And watching this is just the best! I’ll listen later because there’s I guess 2 more hours worth? I’ve only watched podcasts on YT. To know there’s much more Justin I’ve been missing out on, so glad I know now. But I’d love it if these two talked once a month! They’re both just amazing and I just want more.😊
This is brilliant! You guys should most def do this on a regular basis 👍
Thanks Justin. I needed to be productive this afternoon!! OH WELL. SO MUCH FOR THAT!!
But seriously, thanks! I’m guilty of at least three or four comments calling for Pat on the show. He’s a treasure!!
I should be asleep. So I'm coming at it from another direction, but it's meeting you head on.
I know zero music, not a musician, can't read and all talk of *theory* from the rudiment to the whatever the f*ck goes entirely over my head. However I'm fully invested in engaging interaction between people who with confidence (and great humor) speak about what they know. A testament to engaging content. Kudos, yinz jerks.
Pat, you had me at the pedal-mobile. That alone is brilliant! Loved this convo, JH! The two of you together are brilliant!
i could listen these two talking music forever
I would love a few or several of these a year. Not too much. Maybe every other month would be perfect
I think this needs to be a regular thing between you fellas, because I would watch/listen to this as a regular podcast. If you boys want to go for three hours, I’m down. What would be really great is if you guys wrote a song or an entire album on camera.
Name the album after the title track, Shitegeist and call the project “What Makes J.P. Hawk-Finn Ride the Stink Again?” or something like that.
Whatever you guys do, I think it would be lovely because I enjoyed every moment of this and love how Pat sucked Justin down into his trash talking, which is sure to catch some attention one way or another-and if you ever get someone that isn’t so chuffed about how they were discussed on the show, you can have them on to defend themselves or “pass the stink” onto someone else they think stinks even worse-so it’s like in the film The Ring, where you have to pay it forward to someone else to save yourself.
I can't believe Floodland was mentioned!! Awesome. The Sisters of Mercy's album worthwhile knowing.
As much as you may regret what happened with Brian Johnson at the tribute show I don't think you realize how many followers you gained that day. I got reacquainted with you after 20 years and I'm certainly not the only one. I would love to see you interview Brian Johnson long form in the future.
Such an encyclopedic knowledge and human understanding of music - without excluding those of us who just dip our toes in the history of music pond. It's really special. Thank you.
HOLY CRAP!!! I didn't know Pat was in Sweatheart! I was at that show in Philly where you did the Bryan Adams covers and I have the set list from the show! I'm a huge fan of The Darkness and Pat.
Have you heard of a band called August is Falling?
When I stumbled upon Pat's videos and I saw Justin was in them, that instantly made Pat legit in my eyes.
When you hit a clam, just look up and say, "Jazz!"
I saw Beato's videos before Pat, and quite possibly why I found Pat was because of him, and the best part is Pats type of content is what I was looking for when I found Beato, and I haven't watched another Beato video since. Finding out these guys know each other and now an interview is just great. I just started watching Justin and this is a huge bonus. Also, I've been a huge Dr. Dog fan since I was in my early 20s. I think it's actually 6 degrees of Pat Finnerty. Kevin Bacon being from Philly makes that even more hilarious.
Thank you for introducing me to the Viagra Boys (so exceedingly cool). You are correct when you say that most of us don’t explore paths to music other than what we are fed, so I appreciate that your platform is exposing us to new music. Keep doing what you are doing!
I cannot express how much it warms my heart hearing these two share a lot of the same feelings i hold toward music. :)
Great episode, Justin and Pat.
I especially enjoyed the discussion around Dire Straits, and Mark Knopfler. I'm always happy and willing to talk about the brilliance of that band and their music. My favourite Dire Straits song is "On Every Street". It's plainly a beautiful piece of music.
Solid Rock is the DS song for me
Who was the guitarist Pat was saying 'rips off' Knopfler?
@@jamesrawlings5781”really popular and has a PRS signature model”?
John Mayer
@@marcsullivan7987 Ah. Never thought he sounded like he was ripping off Knopfler, but haven't heard that much.
@@jamesrawlings5781 me neither; only in the vaguest sense of phrasing. But that’s def who they meant.
Love you both, your collabs have been my favorite pieces of both of your channels.
I was needing a solid two hour dose of Pat. Thanks!
what an amazing interview. you guys bounce off each other in the funniest way.
Entertaining song mixes. You two are fun together. You just get it. Mutual understandings.
Thanks for this. I enjoyed every single second of it.
I really hope albums don’t die forever, the format will never get old for me. Still a lot of great albums coming out nowadays.
How am i only finding out about this now? Good work algorithm Im subscribed to both and you tell me two weeks late?! Love Pat and Justin. There needs to be more collaboration!
I love everything Pat does. Such a funny and smart dude. Would love to have a conversation with him myself one day.
You can have a conversation with yourself any day
@@jland12 I do that every day. Haha. Sorry, missed one word in my original comment. Oops!
The starbust part is pure poetry. Please do more of these. And also make a verse chorus bridge together.
Can't wait to watch. Honestly Justin I had no idea about your channel until i saw ot on pats show. He got me hooked on ya which i will always be grateful for.
Omg. Have the stars aligned? Something is 1000% right in the universe.
Nice one mate! I must say, I've ignored your channel for a while. But this one, especially in podcast format, is ideal content for during my cycle rides. I've added it to my spotify playlist. Thanks!
This was a real pleasure. My two favorite music RUclipsrs. A regular shitegeist conversation would be incredible and hold back the encroaching darkness.

Please do this regularly! You have great chemistry
@15:35 I think what Pat does is help people recognize bad music, to help people become a little more discerning in musical appreciation, to sharpen the ear. When you can better identify the bad, you can more easily, appreciate and enjoy the good.
Love both, and happy Pat is ok being talked over at some points. Wish he could finish a little more though. Enthusiasm and conversation over headphones does that sometimes I guess
I just finished to watch it complete. I enjoyed it very much! Lots of laugh with the "Back in Black" part... The Carlos Vives' song is Pa' Mayte (It means For Mayte), Mayte is a woman's name.
It was very interesting your conversation about songs creation, and your both opinion about currently pop music.
I didn't know that you had participated in writing sessions for pop artists. In what way does it happen? I mean, who do ask to the composer the lyric? Is the artist her or himself? Is the music company? Shakira told once that she only sings songs which are related to self experiences... so having in account that she is song writer too... I can't understand that she doesn't participate herself in this kind of sessions.
An old Spanish singer, she sang copla (typical spanish music different to flamenco) told once that as well she wasn't song writer or composer she liked to meet with her songs composer to talk about the lyrics in her albums, the subject, the ideas she had, even though her own life experiences... So they composed songs by it.
I would love that you talked a little more about this stuff, because it's very interesting for people like me who aren't musicians.
In my opinion, the big problem in music industry currently is the same than in the rest of activities. Everything is under the control of big companies which monopolize the industry and market, they only want accumulate money and they don't care the art itselfs, only the result quick, easy and commercial. So the most of singers, bands...look like made by design, everybody sounds equal...
My two favorite people, that Ive never met. J.Hawks and P.Finns at the same time! My head might explode. I can feel myself growing stronger just by listening to them. Inspiring me to add 9.
My favorite thing to do to a jerk in traffic is the finger-and-thumb-in-the-shape-on-an-L-on-my-forehead. Nobody wants to be called a loser!
Love it! 🤣🤣🤣
Best ep. Love both of your channels, but hadn't seen the connection until watching this
Finally! Been hoping you guys would get together for another chat since the Kid Rock All Summer Long video. That song is, to quote you after playing your own solo in the wrong key, a total disgrace
Two of my favorite channels come together, how fun!
Can't agree on the opal fruits, the yellow ones are the best ones!
That was so good ... I even put my yellow Just Hawkins Rides Again t-shirt on just to watch it!! Shitegeist ... brilliant!!
THE DREAM EPISODE!
I enjoyed this conversation, and have enjoyed both of your channels.
The more academic scenery is very much befitting, Justin. A perusal of your collection of literature would be quite interesting, to me at least.
I’d like to second this suggestion! 😀
Count me in! I find myself trying to read the titles. I’ve gotten as far as “Dictionary”. 😅
You two are the best. Loved this one. Thank you.
You guys are my favorites - I agree with every stinky song choice
Hey Pat and Justin - so great to hear you guys riffing off each other - please give us more in the future - my vote for greatest chorus ever? - "Go All The Way" by The Raspberries - greatest bridge? - "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by the Beach Boys - greatest verse? I need a couple of weeks on that........
