I was actually drawn to the song immediately BECAUSE of the staccato nature of his delivery. It's unique and cool and I loved it right away. *shrug* 🙂

Mikael’s lyrics are usually really deep and poetic especially for a non native English speaker (although more fluent than some native English speakers 😂).

    Thank you for your honesty.
It's one of the major reasons I watch your channel. (That and a chance to see Mocha😅)
Like with all things, it just takes getting used to. (sorry I ended the previous sentence on a preposition)

The more times you hear it, the more the sections will meld and work better. It will burrow its way into your SOUL😭🙌
Also, you should absolutely check out the live version from the Red Rocks show. Its cosmic✨

the notes sung in the verse create a polyrhythm with the music in the background. the vocals are off beat for a while and at some point they come together.

This one is from the album Damnation, which is totally demonless. It was produced in parallell with Deliverence which has a much heavier and... demony sound : ) Both albums are great, and personally I like this style a lot better than their latest stuff.

I'm a huge fan of this band and your reactions to them are fantastic. I totally had to subscribe and binge watch all of your Opeth reactions a few months ago. My favorite albums are Blackwater Park and Still Life, and even though you've reacted to almost the entirety of each, somehow you have yet to react to my favorite Opeth song from either album: The Funeral Portrait and Godhead's Lament, respectively. Hopefully you get back to Opeth soon and check out either or both of these eventually. Plenty of beautiful melodies, "demon" vocals, O-sitions (is that how you spell that?) and of course both of the Martins. Looking forward to you getting to them eventually! Cheers!

Don't feel bad for not liking one song as soon as you listened. They're really few songs from "old" Opeth that you need to give a second hearing to let them grow on you. I listen to Opeth since 'Orchid' album, the first one. From second album, 'Morningrise', I had to listen the 4th track called 'The Night and the Silent Water' several times until I really appreciate that song.
The thing is, it could happen to anyone. Some people don't like songs like Nectar but to me is a great track.
    Cheers from México!

You know there’s something awry when a song as bass heavy as this one hardly gets a mention of bass until the end of the video. I’m surprised the delivery of the verses bothered you as much as it did, but it’s definitely a stylistic choice to emphasize the emotional state of the narrator and I think most people would agree it’s not the most pleasing way to approach a melody (but that’s the point). So largely due to that this isn’t one of my favorites on this album either, it’s bottom two for me, but I don’t dislike a single song on the album, so it’s still a very good song imo, great bass, Martin Lopez is amazing throughout the entire album, and it’s no exception here, and I love how the guitars and mellotron combine to make such a cold, depressing yet still beautiful atmosphere in this song.
Some Opeth recommendations with awesome Mendez bass in mind: To Rid the Disease, River, Eternal Rains Will Come, I Feel the Dark

The entire "Damnation" album is awesome. This was the companion, totally clean, album to "Deliverance". I bought this CD when it was initially released in 03, and it took me a few listens to get used to (being that I was expecting the hardcore Opeth sound). Long story short, this CD played continuously in my car for about 6 months.

Greetings from England, this one took me a while to get use to but I enjoy it now. I vote for Godhead's Lament next a very underrated cut from Still Life. I think once you have reacted to all songs from Still Life you should listen to the album and follow along with the story as that gives the songs so much more context.

All of the Opeth albums seem to be stories, but I agree with you, "Still Life" certainly needs to be listened to in order. Same thing for "My Arms Your Hearse".

This is my second favorite off of this album. Completely unique in the way he sings this. Honestly I’m usually surprised by how many people instantly like some Opeth songs because with me the magic usually happens with multiple listens (4-5) due to all the things happening in their songs. This song isn’t like that, it’s pretty simple, but I can see how it might still throw some people off. Btw I thumbs up for honesty, we need more of that in this world.

The vocal cadence at the beginning sounds like he's trying to sing while sobbing, and yet detached emotionally from what he's singing. The rest of the song seems heavily influenced by King Crimson. (A good thing IMO.) This song is a really nice juxtaposition to their heavier stuff.

Hi, I really think you should do a reaction, or check out at least, Opeth: Lamentations Live 2003. It is a 2 set live concert, with 1st set being no-growl, and then the 2nd set as "normal Opeth". ruclips.net/video/2dO3i6vk4Eo/видео.html
I truly love this song, and the whole album of course. On the live setting everything clicks in place.

Variations. Cold water is nice after a sauna. The different seasons are more appreciated living where they differs. Beauty double up when showing up on a grey background. Often same with music exemplified in this brilliant song.

Exactly.the.same. when I first heard it a decade or so ago. The 'singing' part is awesome and kind of make it OK for the 'robotic' part to be included, but I have never been a fan. Good song overall, though - they still play it live sometimes, I think MIkael likes it.

You don't like Mikael's vocals in his time of need 😬
I mostly like the vocal melody for its 2-against-3 polyrythm with the drums, which works especially with the groovy bass. So there's a bit of the "vocals are just an instrument among others" sentiment in it.
The delivery has a sense of apathy, sadness, and imminence, so it definitely fits the lyrics also. I appreciate that you noticed that aspect despite not liking it in the moment. And what would be the point of a dishonest reaction anyway. You're on the right track.
