This is my first crack at this style of a longer review focusing on just one game. It was a blast to make (even if it took forever) and I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I had making it. Channel members can vote now in a poll on the next PS2 game I review in this style. Consider joining for other perks too, appreciate you all! ruclips.net/channel/UCeTvRtfRFyWXdO_ZbyArPjAjoinorr
This was wonderful Pete. As a student game designer it's very inspiring to see the passion and appreciation. Keep it up! 💯
Did you ever end up making a review for "King's Field IV: The Ancient City" (PS2)? It's one of my personal favorite PS2 games and after recently watching your complete playthrough of it, I see you too share that sentiment. I'd love to see your full length review of it! If you have already, could you direct me to the video? Did you ever go back and explore the world more, including the water cave? Also, did you ever end up going back to the previous 3 King's Field games? Peace.
P.S.- have you played any of Fromsoft's "Echonight" series. Some really great adventure gaming to be had there, with some excellent ambiance and atmosphere. I highly recommend all 3 of them!
Was awesome Pete. From a business perspective, I think this type of video would help grow the channel.
This form of video suits you perfectly.
This game will always hold a special place in my heart. One Xmas I asked my mom to just surprise me with a PS2 game of her own choosing. Knowing nothing about games, I guess just based on cover and title alone, she gifted me Sky Odyssey. I had never heard of it at the time. Turned out it was an amazing hidden gem!
I never suspected that one day it would get the recognition, but now I’m sure that it will. Great video. Love to see the appreciation for these unsung games that not many even play, let alone champion this way.
More reviews should be like this! No BS yelling or contrived jokes. Just a vivid descriptive analysis of the game.
What kind of reviews have you been watching?
@@goatbone I’m generalizing a bit to all of gaming RUclips
@@goatbone Honestly? That sounds like most amateur "game reviewers" on YT since 2006. Unfunny wise cracks and pretend anger at the game. It's a really old and lame formula that's been done to death but will probably never go away.
Pete, you got me hyped sir. Ordered it, cost me around £8.00 with P+P.
Got my arse slapped on the price but I trust your recommendations.
@@warmsignal like in most industries/platforms, everyone’s afraid to do something that stands out
This is Pete at his best. I love it when he concentrates on the obscurities.
Before there was the MJR hidden germs, there was Pete.
I LOVED this game. The marriage of flight and adventure was so novel, and I only wished that they had worked harder to add some more narrative and story-driven ideas to take the concept to the next level. One of my absolute faves on the PS2.
This game was awesome for a flight simulator and adventure game back in the early 2000s. I always liked the sky drawings. I always got smacked into mountains by wind because i wanted to fly higher than the canyons. The first 5 missions took me a while as a kid.
Incredibly well done video. I can tell you put a lot into this, and happy see to a more obscure PS2 get documented in such a way.
I’ve tried to start this game several times. Failed miserably and vowed to go back one day. Currently have crusty thumb syndrome so won’t be playing it again soon. I was impressed by what I played though.
Your stream of this was legendary, Pete. I stayed up far too late watching you finish it but it was worth it. I enjoyed the video as well, it's cool to see a more edited video from you.
I have a weird history of this game. My dad's coworker was obsessed with this game, since he was a WW2 pilot and I liked it back then, but didn't really appreciate it until I tried to play it more recently. It's a REALLY chill and fun game, but the depth perception feels pretty goofy in tighter corridors.
My brother and I use to play this game... we would challenge each other in many cases just to finish the course!
What a fun and memorable way to play the game!
Wow this takes me back. A friend insisted I borrow his copy back in the day to give it a try, and it sure was epic.
I still have a PS2 set up so I guess I'll be keeping my eye out for a copy :)
Outstanding video! Definitely picking this one up! Thanks Pete!
Yes I just purchased this earlier this year because I remember owning it. Yep a helluva fun game. Heres another I don’t hear enough about….Rumble Racing! I used to love that game and the acrobatics you could do with the car to get turbos was just so fun!
This format works very well for you. I think you're the perfect person to do deep dives into some of the more obscure games.
I always loved this game. It was one of the first games i ever got for my ps2 as a kid. I still play it time and again to this day.
Good ol' voiceover by Pete Dorr. What a life!
I REALLY loved this style of video and would love to see more like it!! In depth videos about hidden gems like this are like my favorite videos ever and I think you know about a lot of obscure gems I'd be really interested to hear about!
Could have sworn I had this but not yet played it. Turns out I didn't have it yet so just ordered it on ebay. Loving your ps2 reviews.
Thanks! Adding this to my "Sleeping with Pete" playlist💤
Fantastic video Pete. As a longtime subscriber I must say, this feels like a really natural evolution of your style
Thank you, I hope to continue expanding on videos like this in the future!
Would love more reviews or this style of video. Really well done. Appreciate you, Pete. Some of the coolest games I’ve found from you
Crazy to think some of us have been learning of cool games from Pete for like 16 years straight 😮
Just picked this game up after seeing this review. I'm absolutely loving this game. I could easily be convinced this was a launch ps3 game. Love seeing your hidden gem recommendations/reviews. Keep the ps2 love alive.
I thought everybody played this game back in the day! Guess it was mostly just me lol
Really like this approach, nice to hear a review without obnoxious music and over the top hyperbolic narative
When I was a kid my uncle gifted me this game and basically shaped my love for airplanes still to this day
A very fascinating & enticing impressions you conveyed on this PS2 game I never noticed or knew existed!
I was delighted to add this game to my list of PS2 games to obtain.
Recently saw JankJesus playing this on Twitch. It looks so fun!
Sky Odyssey is the first flight sim I ever played. I loved it. In fact, I still own my copy, but my PS2 is probably decaying in a landfill somewhere and I'm done with consoles forever.
Man Pete, after all these years.
Sweet you're back.
Good review! And with game footage, appreciate it!
Love this format, Pete!
I have loved this game I since I first played the demo on an Official PS2 Magazine UK Demo disc. It's one I have returned to and replayed numerous times over the years, and I did attempt to get the word out about how great it was about 10 years ago here on RUclips but I don't have the views to do it justice. Interestingly, in Japan and Europe it's a first part Sony title, while it was left to Activision to put out in the US. Ever since playing it I have been trying to find another game that captures the same feeling of flight, without any needless combat, but have never found it.
Thanks Pete. This game reminds me of a more chilled version of a Namco arcade game called “Prop Cycle” where you ride an actual bicycle to fly in the sky. I have great memories of playing this when I was a teenager so I think I will check Sky Odyssey out.
You've convinced me that I'd love this game that I'd never give the time of the day from that cover. The Kow Otani soundtrack sounds immaculate (I always find his name to show up in the least expected places). I don't think I've ever seen such a peaceful-looking, yet obviously edge-of-your-seat challenging flight sim game. The music and visuals kind of remind me of Acceleration of Suguri.
Love Love Love this video! At a time when a lot of gaming youtube feels super played out, you find a way to pull me back in! Thank you for always digging deep to find games no one else talks about! 10/10 vid. Would love to see more like this!!!
I'm now obsessed with the dreamy low-poly landscapes in this game.
Thank you! The visuals definitely give me that nostalgic 90’s feel
Man, this game is such a gem, I revisit every 5 years or so and the atmosphere and sense of wonder never disappoints. Great video Pete!
Really nice vid!
Especially with your soothing voice this was very nice to watch and listen to.
Edit: you really convinced me and picked up a copy for 3 € in very good condition.
_Sky Odyssey_ feels like you and your flight instructor have discovered ancient elven ruins.
Thanks Pete! I literally have 700 hours and 400$ of planes on MSFS past 2 yrs. Pretty much became an airline pilot without the whole salary part :-D But it's nice to do the arcadey, laid back plane games too, and I never heard of this. I also bought the Japanese PS1 air balloon game you recommended long ago, another great rec. I just got this one the bay for 7$ CIB and will try when arrives after I finally clear up Arc the Lad II.
This review is a masterpiece. Wonderful work, seriously
I still remember your stream of this one! Amazing video Pete, would love to see more like this!
Loving the production value of this video and the new videos!
holy shit, I had this on the demo cd and played it so many times and forgot that it existed, thanks for the memory trip
Your video really convinced me to give it a shot!
I took your word for it and for anyone else who is interested in getting a copy, Pete wasn’t kidding when he said that you should be able to find it at practically any retro game store you go to, I went to 3 different game stores and ALL of them had a copy and they were all around 5 dollars! Go get a copy if you’re interested, you should be able to find one!
It indeed lives up to its reputation as a bargain bin game, just a really underrated and unexpectedly good one!
@@PeteDorrthanks for making the video and convincing me to give it a try, Pete! I’m gonna play it as soon as I can!
What an awesome review/loveletter. The music alone made me buy it. Thank you so much Pete. I bet this game will not stay very long at 5$ 😅
There’s actually TONS of this game online. Even after this video being live a few days you can still easily grab it for $10. Perfect for those willing to give it a shot
Here after playing, after your recommendation. I love it!
I bought this game (pre Covid) at a Goodwill for $2 complete with manual and in great shape, lol. Good game as many other PS2 games that unfortunately never got the shine they deserved simply by the amount of games on that console.
Ah my first ps2 game and favourite
So wild seeing this game again. I remember having this and playing it so vividly!
Wow that game looks crazy, I'm usually not big into flight sims but, Hagane devs and SotC composer peaks my interest, might have to give it a shot sometime. Great vid tho Pete, hope to see more like it, you're one of few content creators I respect the opinions of.
Sky Odyssey deserves more love. I prefer the NA version because they (somehow) got Alucard to do the narration.
Wow I didn’t know that, nice find!
Fantastic video to mark your 115k subscriber milestone. I'm really excited for this channel.
I dont normally play flight simulators, but this one looks neat with varied levels. I like the video format, Pete!
The graphics and environments look absolutely incredible in this. I can almost smell the fog and the rain.
i'd love for you to keep doing this style, but maybe also add yourself in the video as well if it makes sense. Keep up the vids bro
Thank you for the video Pete. I enjoy this style of video from you.
Ahhh. The briefing song. Good memories. Was in my collection since a long time ago. Indy title from a long time ago. Some really specials mechanics for the era.
Never seen or played the game, but the vibe seems eerily similar to the flight sim game Loner on android.
I bought this years back, never played it. I will do so soon now. Thanks Pete!
Keep it up. This was informative and relaxing at the same time.
Pete just has this passion about games that I don't get from most other RUclipsrs. Happy Console Gamer might be the only other one with similar vibes.
this is a great step-up in production, Pete. Really solid scripting and a relaxing cadence too. Maybe, a bit more ambient music to capture the relaxing vibes of the game or something. But yeah, great video.
Thanks! Just curious, were you able to hear the background music at all during my narration? It’s hard for me to find a good balance for people using headphones vs speakers. If it’s too hard to hear I will try to bump it up a tad next time.
@@PeteDorr I did hear it, but it was very faint -for me, at least. I was using headphones too, I believe. Yeah, it's not a big deal. Overall, I really enjoyed the video and will probably pick up this game once I get a PS2 soon.
This really reminds me of porco Rosso. I love how the game looks. Picking it up
Strange… I was randomly just thinking about this game the other day. I only ever played the demo.
Hey Pete, the guy that gave you the Wall-E for PS2 at prge like 10 years ago, anywho, great recommendation, the way you were talking about this game is similar to this new obsession I picked up just by happenstance it's a game called Expeditions by mudrunner for the Nintendo switch it just recently came out I think the total price was like $40 or $50 it's not even a $60 game for original MSRP and it's my first foray into a mudrunners game and it is crazy addictive and there's no racing there's no combat it is fantastic and it has its hooks in me so much and I'm not even a car guy or off-road guy and the graphics and the physics of this game are just so good and there's so much risk and reward and light strategy and feelings of accomplishment when you pull a truck out of the mud to bring it back only to then have it available to purchase it feels as enjoyable as when you're a kid playing with cars out in the dirt the satisfaction Loop is one of the highest I've ever had in a game and it's very technical but not overly technical hopefully that all makes sense but give it a go
I planed and loved Snowrunner. Expediations has been on my radar but waiting for it to get cheaper. Glad to hear it’s pretty fun!
Is this was the kids call ASMR? Because I'm getting the brain tingles
Ok, its now installed my PS2, this better be good!
It's bloody hard mate
I need to download this game
Loved the video, Pete. Great writing, great editing, great topic.
Can’t pass up a Pete Dorr recommendation. Purchased for 9$ free ship on eBay. Thanks Pete. Enjoyed this video and I’m sure I’ll enjoy the game 👌
Great video! Can you do more ps2 and ps3 “REALLY hidden gems” videos?
I definitely plan on keeping up my Playstation content
Great pick. I actually have game but have never really played it. This video has inspired me to finally give it a go!
So relaxing I dozed off a few times
Yeah, I really enjoyed Sky Odyssey , it was a lot of fun!!!
Love this style of content Pete! Keep it comin!
This is like an ASMR review
Whenever I saw this game I confused it with Sky Gunner for no other reason than I'm not too bright. I never bought it because I already had Sky Gunner (but never played, so double d'oh).
I don’t think there was a pal release. Would of definitely loved it.
I loved this game. It's actally very relaxing to play.
These new uploads have been great!
We just sold out of all our copies online probably because of this video. Ha! Too funny, thanks Pete 😊
Not that this game was jank, it fits in that forgotten and obscure titles category. Maybe this is a start to an obscure and jank review series?!
I like this type of video. Good one, Pete.
dig this format
Not going to lie, kind of refer the more casual you talking infront of a camera about the game. Perhaps that format with gameplay in the corner would be good
Honestly, never seen this before. But looks cool
Ps2 is amazing! 🔥 The console I grew up with !
Please more videos like this ❤
Loved the video! Will give the game a chance. :)
Nice produced video
Convinced me to buy it asap!
Good video
Please put the title of the game in the title or the thumbnail.
You had me until the long levels and no checkpoints. 😅 I'm thinking this could be a good one to play on an emulator so you can drop savestates,
Do what you gotta do to enjoy it, but I do think the lack of checkpoints adds to the urgency of the gameplay
@@PeteDorr Considering the long levels I don't doubt that for a second. If you end up dying a lot though I expect flying the same stretches over and over will get dull.
Great video
I don't know, sounds like a contoller breaker to me.
Good ol ps2, one of my favorite eras! Sadly most of it's titles haven't aged too well, but if you spend enough time away from modern day games it doesn't bother as much.
Exactly…you start to crave older style games when you grow tired and distance yourself from modern games for long enough
🎉🎉
I don't know who Cross is? Is it even the same company?
Mobygames lists this as their only game. Looks like a codeveloper or contractor for CAProduction?
Very hard to find info on it. The team likely got absorbed into CAProduction
Great overview video!
