  • The BMW M3 coupe has morphed into the new M4, and with its closest rivals from Audi and Mercedes now very long in the tooth, we went seeking a rival from further up the food chain. Can the M4 do itself proud on Anglesey circuit against a proper sports car, the Porsche 911 Carrera?

    Bit of stupid comparison. They are two quite different cars. The M4 is an everyday sports car, good space, comfort, fuel economy and lots of features. The porsche is more of a dedicated sports car and a lot more expensive. Either way I'd go for the M4, it's far better looking.

    Wonderfully informative and pragmatic track review - love hearing about the minute details, like pedal travel and throttle application, how quickly the tires will overheat, low speed traction events, etc. People will always be in love with the "numbers" but if you're really into driving, this is the kind of stuff you want to know about.

    M4 is not designed to be an all out track car. It's a powerful badazz car you can drive everyday, in town or on a 10 hr road trip. N it was only 1.4 sec behind the porsche on the track. Are you buying one to drive on a track everyday? Hell no. both are great cars, but the M4 is my choice. All these youtube comments about this car sucks or this car blah blah blah. shows how immature and childish, not to mention spoiled, most people are. haha people used to travel by horse n buggy, be thankful for all the great automobiles we have available to us n pick you favorite flavor and move on.

      +Joel Thomas the 911 sounds so much better. and believe me the 911 is also a better daily driver. they go over a road so smoothly. i have driven a base 911. and i daily a 991 gt3!!

    • @1400IntruderVS
      @1400IntruderVS 8 лет назад

      M cars were intended to be weekend racers.
      The base 911 is intended to be a road going sports car. The GT3 exist as the weekend racer variant for the 911.
      The M cars are based on sporting coupes and sedans. Where as the 911 has been a sports car from it's original inception. Obviously all things are not equal for a reason.
      Porsche also has an outstanding record of durability and oddly enough has better ride quality, but that doesn't mean The M4 isn't fun.

    • @jonbathurst4936
      @jonbathurst4936 8 лет назад

      1.4 seconds is a big margin for a track time. thats not a small difference. The porsche just sounds like a better bilt and balanced car. that being said..different roles though. porsche is borderline impractical in most aspects.

    • @jonbathurst4936
      @jonbathurst4936 8 лет назад

      I always thought the gt3 was a road worthy track car. it would probably stomp any track numbers any M series can put forth. its the closest to a "race" car.

    • @rousseau327

      I think the GTS would be even faster than the Carrera. The Carrera is only marginally quicker than the Cayman S.

    • @dagjohnsen
      @dagjohnsen 10 лет назад

      ewt415 The test done earlier against Cayman S was a Carrera without the 20mm lower sport suspention, the PTV diff and PDK. The car in this test has all that and I believe this lap time will be hard to beat for many other cars. I do not know the Cayman GTS well enough to predict something, but my gut feeling tells me the Carrera is faster.

    One of the best head to head style reviews I've ever seen. It was so refreshing listening to Mr Franchitti's conclusions as someone who absolutely knows what they are talking about, talking complete sense. It seems to me other reviews rely more on exciting tire smoke shots to make their videos worth watching where as watching this was much more useful in coming to understand what the cars are actually like.
    You get such a better review when a proper racing driver does the driving, as an example: almost unanimously all reviewers seems to gripe about the new electric steering on the 991 911. But Mr Franchitti must not have found that to be holding him back as he didn't mention it and I have heard Tiff Needel say that he doesn't really see the problem with the electric assist system. Tiff conceded it isn't as good but he can still feel all he needs to feel. Totally different opinions than lots of the other reviewers out there who seem personally offended by it. Anyway my point is, please do more reviews like this! Thanks!

  • @sereneturmoil
    @sereneturmoil 10 лет назад +11

    I don't think the results of the lap times should be surprising to anyone. Though I was somewhat surprised to hear the upshifts on the PDK were "a little bit lazy" given that the transmission generally receives glowing reviews.

      The upshifts are a bit lazy both on the Carrera and the Carrera S, I have driven both a lot on the track called Nûrburgring. Check my videos and you can hear it sometimes. It is very surprising, that the 911 [and the M4] was only so incrementally slower than the Ferrari. I guess, a Carrera S would definitely come much close to the Speciale and the Turbo [S] and GT3 might even bring the Ferrari into serious trouble...

    • @joaosoares3719
      @joaosoares3719 10 лет назад +3

    • @Billeh556
      @Billeh556 10 лет назад

      On a smaller track like this one maybe, it's all depending on the specific track. Too many people just see eg. "Oh it's only __ seconds behind" keep in mind on a different track with longer straights the Ferrari would demolish any of these two cars. That's what's great about the upcoming and previous GT3 RS' though...even though they removed the manual altogether

    • @Billeh556
      @Billeh556 10 лет назад

      @joao soares the turbo s is faster then what, an Italia speciale? On what course? Oh you're talking about in a straight line. Ok, nobody really cares how fast a car is in a straight line when talking about exotics and super cars there bud, the turbo s is an AMAZING everyday super car but it isn't meant for the track and would get beaten handily by a speciale.

    • @Dominikmj
      @Dominikmj 10 лет назад +1

      kuetmin It is hypothetical - but I am very surprised, that the base 911 Carrera did so well - against the M4 but especially against the Speciale. If there is so little time between the cars, my rational was, that a Turbo S or a GT3 should almost rip the time of the Ferrari.
      No proof, no test... just a feeling...

      kuetmin A Ferrari 458 Italia Speciale w/ 597 hp 398 trq beats a base Porsche 911 w/ 350 hp 287 trq by roughly 3 seconds on this track and you think a Porsche 911 Turbo S w/ 560 hp 553 trq "would get beaten handily by a speciale". I hope they run the Turbo S soon on this track.

    Usually in these reviews some cars tend to understeer, not this M4, it chooses to have fun and oversteer :)

    I had the M4 in same configuration for about 3 years. Tracked it whenever I could, it was a fantastic car. Several months ago after watching this video I decided to replace the M4 with base (991) 911. I haven't tracked the car yet but looking forward to the season. Both cars seem to be in the same "GT" category, however, in real life they are two different animals. Nevertheless, both cars are amazing.

      Which would you prefer for everyday spirited driving?

      @@Salpeteroxid lots of changed since I wrote that comment. I sold the 991.1 and got a 981 GT4 ... now I drive a 991.2 GT3. I completely moved away from BMWs. The 991.2 GT3 is useless on the street, it's my primary track weapon and it thrives there. The 991.1 and GT4, both in manual were more enjoyable cars overall on the street compared to the M4 and GT3. I would highly recommend 911 over any BMW. I hope this helps.

    Great Video, you can't deny that the Porsche is a fantastic car, but I'm not living my life on a track, and 17000 pounds is a huge difference for about a second on the track. Also, daily driving and just being livable it's the BMW all the way. Most everyday average Joe's like myself aren't going to put a 70+ thousand dollar on a track because we can't afford to fix it when we break it....

    Great video, really enjoyed it. It just goes to show that even the entry level 911 is an outstanding car. I really like the M4 and have had a few M3s but in my opinion it's no match (as a drivers car) for a 911. The 991 has plenty of feel but I think that the options are more important than ever for a 991 to really work as both a track and road car. I also note that the 991 in the video must have had about £40k worth of options on it, (making it more than £100k against the BMWs £65k), when you think about it like that it shows what a bargain the new M4 really is....

    • @findtomdotcom
      @findtomdotcom 10 лет назад

      The prices quoted in the video are standard no options prices. Both cars have lots of options, (including carbon brakes).

    The thing is: The M4 is all about the experience, the fun driving it and the greater oversteer is a part of it. The Porsche on the other hand is like a laptime machine, with the main focus on precise handling. I like both cars, but for different reasons. And like troybballin14 said: If I'm gonna buy a Porsche it won't be the entry level model ;)

    I find it much easier to modulate the rear end by setting the throttle response to just sport. Putting the throttle response in sport+ makes the car way too loose when exiting the corner. I think this might have made a difference to the result.

    I wonder what setting he had the throttle set to in the M4. In a vid by Carlos Lago it was mentioned that even BMW pro drivers set the throttle response to comfort rather than sport or sport+ for the very same criticisms heard here, i.e. sensitivity.
