  • Top 10 Worst DBZ Techniques - A Dragon Ball Discussion by MasakoX - There are lots of cool attacks in Dragon Ball...but there are a fair share of not so good ones. Why is that? What makes them so useless? Today I go through my 10 least favourite techniques within the show and then offer a better solution or alternative to them. Some are what you expect...but some aren't! Let's discuss!
    From things like Golden Frieza to Goku's Super Kaioken, I shall present what I think are the least needed powers within the show and then offer something better that could make their life in DBZ much better!

    The ki barrages can be situationally useful for things like masking a Hellzone Grenade. Also, in minor defense of Golden, Frieza had only ever really seen OG Super Saiyan himself. If that was still the the pinnacle of Goku's of power, the imperfected golden form would have pretty easily decimated everyone. Still bad, but it at least SOMEWHAT makes sense. ALSO, ALSO: 8 opponents at 1/8th power are superior one at full power in basically everything BUT Dragonball (As long as the accuracy is constant).

    • @Talyrion
      @Talyrion 4 года назад +12

      Ki barrage was actually somewhat effective when Goku used it against Perfect Cell, pushing him hard enough to resort to a (apparently) costly barrier. Of course, performing the barrage ALSO drained Goku, but hey, at least it was a good step to wear Cell down and let Gohan finish things of against a tired opponent, right?

    Godlen Freeza was definitely stronger than SSJB in Resurrection F at first. The problem is that Freeza just didn't have the endurance to remain in the form at full power for as long, but in terms of raw power, Freeza was dominating SSB Goku for an entire scene.

    • @MasakoX
      @MasakoX  4 года назад +24

    • @lytethekyte
      @lytethekyte 4 года назад +22

      @@MasakoX I think this goes to show the arrogance of Freeza though more than anything. He didn't care if he could maintain it for long because he didn't think he'd have to. Which, in a sense is a rehash from his earlier days in Z, but with a bit more depth. It's as if he thought actually putting effort in training to obtain the new form was him casting aside his arrogance. True Golden Freeza is the result of him learning that lesson (finally). IMO, this doesn't make the ability useless or bad even at that point, just not perfected-similar to special beam cannon in the Raditz fight, the big difference being that Piccolo understood it wasn't ready and Freeza did not. That said, if you look at it from the rehash perspective you gave it, I agree. Pretty pointless if it's the same as before just bigger numbers.

    Down Burst was actually the best move Gohan could've made in the beginning of that fight. If you recall, 17 and 18 were coming at him at 2 different angles.
    Down Burst was never supposed to be a Solar Flare type move because Solar Flare would've taken too long and Gohan probably didn't know how to use it. Yes, Solar Flare is seen being used in actual fights, but the user is either a good distance away or were running away from the target. Krillin and Cell come to mind. Gohan didn't have this option because 17 and 18 are shown to be quite a bit faster than him.

      A bit of an aside, but for USSJ at least, having a weakness is understating it.
      The whole point of it is that you use up more energy so you can hit your opponent harder, but at the cost of not being able to hit your opponent. So its cons _nullify_ its pros.
      I wish Toriyama did something to make it usable at least sometimes. I remember reading a comic back then where Trunks fought in his SSJ grade 2 form, then switched to grade 3 right as he attacked, dealing as much damage as grade 3 while keeping the speed of grade 2.

    I think the multi-form power can be incredibly useful as a training tool, and not just to provide a sparring partner. My head-canon character got hold of the gravity training ship that Goku used to travel to Namek. After training at the maximum 100g for a while her body had become accustomed to the extra weight. So... multiform. Her power was halved which meant that the gravity training became relevant again, and when she re-combined it was like two separate workouts. She kept progressing until she was using 8 multiforms at a time.
    Whether that would actually work? Who knows.

      A waay worse version. The Shadow Clone Technique is a top tier ability in Naruto, while the Multi-form Technique is a useless technique in Dragon Ball.
      Maybe if it didn’t split your power output amongst the clones, and only your total energy(think, each clone is just as strong as the original, but tires out/runs out of energy several times as fast, depending on the number of clones), then it would be situationally good.

  • @TheDaiTenguofFuji
    @TheDaiTenguofFuji 4 года назад +2

    Here's the thing; Ultra Super Saiyan wouldn't be useless in a team setting, because if you have someone else to compensate your speed, keep the enemy off guard, and ensure your attacks hit, you do SIGNIFICANT damage. A lot of these techniques would actually have application, the problem is the series focuses primarily on 1v1 matches that make them seem more useless. As a supporting ability, USS is fine.
    Also speed is woefully overrated. The addage 'if you can't hit me what use is power' is worthless when you realize that speed falls to a tanky build because it only takes 1 well placed hit to win, and power doesn't mean you're incompetent at using it - there are other ways to reduce someone's speed. Just look at the tournament of power and Dyspo; he was locked in a cage of energy and his movement severely limited, that speed stat sure was worthless right there.
    Additionally, the split form technique does have uses, but it was wasted on the 'oh if you split power you're just weaker' trope - that power is just distributed in a 'wider area', so to speak. You can have attacks from multiple sides if your opponent is good at blocking, and while the speed and strength is reduced, strength in numbers is still important. So you have one grabbing the attention of the enemy from the front while the other two work in tandem to exploit openings from behind. The only reason this failed against Nappa, for example, was because he outclassed Krillin and Piccolo by so much already and was a tankier fighter - they were getting attacks on him, but those attacks didn't do much, so it was a bad matchup for the technique to shine. Goku bested Cell's because Cell was being extremely dumb with their use - again, all attacking at once instead of having one or two doing different things off to the side and exploiting openings. It's the series resting upon age old tropes that are often times misplaced as their own isolated Aesops about the pursuit of power.
    On the subject of Super Kaioken, barring the obvious fact that it was an impossible technique, I can see why the temporary power boost would be needed; Goku did NOT know SS2 at that point in time, he wasn't shown using it until he and Vegeta fought in the Buu saga, so the point about 'just use SS2' is kind of moot when you literally cannot. Everything else in that bit is pretty spot on though.

    About Ultra Super Saiyan... Does it make ki attacks stronger or just physical attacks? Most ki attacks seen in both the manga and the anime are done with the character who performs them not moving from the spot. Someone who practiced to transform quickly to that state could perform devastating ki blasts or grab the enemy while in a faster form, transform and crush the grappled enemy. In my opinion the problem with Ultra Super Saiyan wouldn't be the transformation itself but characters being unable to take advantage of it.

    I'd argue that Ultra Super Saiyan does have one useful thing: Instead of using it as Melee powerhouse, you use it as Artillery. Since power stressing increases all offense and defense in exchange for speed, using it to increase the power of your beam attacks is the best idea.
    Or do a smart thing and do like Goku used to do in DB adn early Z, keep your power level low and only increase it when you attack, so in this case, stay as grade 2 and only quick change to grade 4 as the attack connects.

    I see it as those poses and stances being needed to channel and manipulate Ki in DB when we were talking small scale but over time they got good enough at Ki control and could generate enough to not need the exaggerated movements to channel the ki as desired anymore.

    For Ultra Super Saiyan: I'd also argue it, in itself, is not a transformation and is simply just power weighting (or at least a variant) being applied with super saiyan, so yes you would be using a stronger grade of power weighting, but you'd also be using a weaker super saiyan. Not to mention, Roshi has been able to use it since the original Dragon Ball (with his Max Power), so it's not like it'd be difficult to do or even master with enough effort. Like Cell said in DBZA; Anyone can do it.

    In my opinion Super Saiyan Third Grade has a lot of wasted potential. Yes, it makes you slower, but ever since I saw how it worked I wondered why they never used it as a one time attack thing, you know, just like how Kaio-Ken was used at the start, but instead of a short outburst of attacks, it's more like a single hit supercharged cannon or a giant defensive wall. Use it in the middle of a beam struggle or right before you throw an attack to an unsuspecting enemy. Sounds like a very good support transformation to be honest, and you can stand more damage too, which would be perfect in situations where you can't avoid an attack or you have to protect someone else. What I mean is, it had a lot of teamwork potential.

      Mathematically unfortunately it really doesn't. This is due to the additional strain placed on a subject with reduced stamina combined with inherent damage resistance which... you know what? Just maybe trust that I've run the numbers and aside from maybe pulling off a sneak attack or fighting someone unused to multiple opponents it still adds up to pretty useless.

    • @fangsabre
      @fangsabre 4 года назад +1

      @@tinkerer3399 well it would be pretty useless for most characters. I wouldn't see Krillin getting much use out of it. However, someone like Goku could. Even with reduced stamina, durability, and strength, using kaioken to the limit of the clones is still a massively impressive combo. Especially once you get into combining it with SSB. It would be more useful as a singular attack strategy as opposed to a lengthy fight gimmick like Naruto does. If Goku could split in two and use SSB Kaioken for a single attack, it could put the move back into useful territory, allowing him to use 2 extremely powerful Kamehamehas. That along with instant transmission would make a very useful attack

    • @tinkerer3399
      @tinkerer3399 4 года назад

      @@fangsabre Actually you have that backwards, Krillin would get *more* use out of it since he doesnt use a strain based power up.
      Let us assume that the power of SSB Kamehameha is equal to 20 (because I dont feel like writing a bunch of zeros every time) and that Goku is capable of doing a 20x Kaioken. Using the multi form technique splits the users power 4 ways meaning each Kamehameha has a base power of 5 AND that Goku would only be capable of producing a Kaioken x5 (remember all the physical attributes are divided by 4 meaning the clones can't handle nearly as much strain). Thus each beam would have a power of 25 adding up to a total beam strength of 100 where as just using a x20 Kaioken SSB Kamehameha would give you a beam strength of 400.
      There are a very few scenarios where I could see it being advantageous, most notably if an enemy had a powerful directional shield. But then again Instant Transmission already covers that. Or maybe if you had to hit 4 areas really hard at exactly the same moment. But on the whole pretty useless.

    • @fangsabre
      @fangsabre 4 года назад

      @@tinkerer3399 well the big downside is that if you split into more than 2 it's too drastic of a split to make up for. However, if he split himself in only 2, each clone could go SSB kaioken x10, each one dishing out a kamehameha with a power of 200. And while that is significantly weaker than him at his most powerful, it would still be a powerful enough attack to risk the setup at least temporarily against someone with equal power level. It's really more of a tactical attack to deal some solid damage and set up something else than a finishing move.

I personally would have liked to have seen a character continue exploring the Super Saiyan line without resorting to divine powers to see if there is a form beyond 3 that removes it's disadvantages, like how you had Vegeta unblock Super Saiyan 4 in your Radditz Redemption story line (also worth questioning, does Gohan's ultimate state count as divine?)
