I realize the 3 main Z arcs have a lesser villain that leads to the main one, Frieza had the Saiyans, Cell had the Androids, and I would say that Fat Buu is basically the lead up to Super Buu
also one thing saiyan arc is seperate from namek saga so that is a different arc entirely so kind of i guess but friezas lead up was in the arc before it and cells was in the cell saga
@@themagicalonionfairy7455 yes, they are different arcs. But we are not talking about arcs. We are talking about sagas, aka the video topic. And both arcs belong to the same Frieza saga.
If the Buu Saga is any indication, a good way to not break a Saga would be to not sideline your powerful characters if you're not going to follow through on developing your interesting ones
0:35 - That feeling when your one of those many kids that started with DBZ only to learn that Dragon Ball as a franchise is just one big severe case of Cerebus Syndrome....
I still believe Vegeta was the best in the Namek-Frieza sagas. He was so interesting. He was right in between being evil and becoming good and he was just doing whatever he wanted. It was awesome. Vegeta carried the Namek and Frieza sagas for me
Honestly, one of the biggest overall strengths of DB is its characterization. Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Vegeta, everyone has such a visible through line to their selves that nothing they do ever seems out of character.
Funny, my least favourite is the Cell saga, primarily because it introduced both regenerating bad guys who would keep coming back until the plot demand that THIS attack put them down for good, and the idea that "Super Saiyan" isn't a legendary thing that Goku managed to achieve and is instead just a thing every saiyan can do.
I’d just call both of those “The Android saga”, as they are all androids (well in terms of what the story calls them, 19, Gero, 16, and Cell are anyways)
The universal survival arc is weird because it feels like one of the problems it had was completely flipped between the anime and manga. The anime dragged quite a bit, while the manga took questionable shortcuts to try and speed things along.
There's one other thing I like about the Super 17 "Saga". 18's moment of fury and grief when 17 kills Krillin. Her reaction really made me believe the pain she was feeling. I don't know it was just pretty emotionally resonant for me.
Honestly, the thing that constantly burns me in this series is how Gohan's destiny was snatched away. He's still not even caught up to SSB tier of power despite having by far the most potential new power. I hope there will be a future series where Goku is off training Uub and Vegeta is checking out planet Sadala; it would be nice to see the other characters grow outside their shadow for a change.
The constant build up to amazing new all-powerful forms only to have them fail and give way to the next stretch of build up broke both the Buu Saga and my interest in the series.
I love that you mention Super 17 and Jelly Vegeta but completely ignore Garlic Jr. The silence says volumes... I mean, it is trash, but two good things I appreciated: - An arc that didn't center on Goku or Vegeta and actually gave other characters something to do (at least Krillin, Piccolo, and Gohan) - Gohan got to take down a villain. Sure, he ended up taking Cell in the end, but something about the team effort aspect of Garlic's defeat feels satisfying in a different way from Cell's, especially since it didn't depend on a transformation to make happen.
Him being dangerous and irresponsible is a great character trait - the problem is that he doesn't face CONSEQUENCES for it. The closest we got was Beerus threatening him, but again, it led to nothing.
I had a thought whilst falling asleep last night. Since Namekians can regrow their arms when they loose them. The question is can the the arms grow new namekians.
Some of dbz filler was charming. The space refugees were a great hype to freeza warning how dangerous they was and I remember feeling hyped. I also loved the car episode
8:55 always wonderer how a fusion betbeen goten and trunks results in a character that is 99% trunks personality, and the only goten in there is the black part of his hair
I'd say once Cell shows up to interrupt the fight with Piccolo vs 17, the story switches from the Android Saga to the Cell Saga. Yeah he'd already been introduced but this is when he became the main villain. Like how the Namek saga becomes the Freeza saga once all his henchmen are dealt with and he must take business into his own hands
It could've been DB: Goku's story, Z: Gohan's Story, GT: Goten's story but instead Goku ended up being shoved into pretty much every show. It wasn't so bad in Z since for the most part Gohan got his time and development but then the ball dropped after Buu started and he already had his arc. And then immediately we get teased with the notion of Goten being heavily prominent in GT just to be swapped out with GT Goku last second and shoved into the void with the rest of the cast until a few sparce moments in the later arcs. And Super is just the Stupid Goku show that obviously never had a plan going into it.

The worst part of the Buu saga was that it didn't end after Vegeta's sacrifice. It was the logical conclusion, an amazing end to Vegeta's character arc, and a genuinely touching moment. But they carried on past that point, to the point of tedium. It's why I was happy TFS never adapted it, because to make it work narratively, you'd have to cut out a LOT of crap.
That would be a weird end since Gohan went with the supreme kai and kibito. Ending it with vegeta would make Gohan a wasted character once more and trunks and goten would practically be their super counterparts
Big disagree. That would be really unsatisfying with Buu being hyped up for 20 episodes and being defeated in just 2 episodes making him the least dangerous villain ever. Also what about the character arcs of all the others? Especially Goten and Trunks would be completely irrelevant and so are Kibito, Piccolo and Hercule. While I see it as a possibly good ending for Vegetas development, I like the original more with him getting a chance to return and be fully redeemed by getting revived with the dragonballs because he is now counted as one of the good guys. If you remember, before his sacrifice he dies thinking he would go to hell and never come back.
Great view, overall. I'm not a fan of Super, now I have to recognize the good parts in it. I always said, the best thing about Super is the coloring. When you touched on GT, you never mentioned how cool level 4 Super Saiyan is or was. (We speak the bad English over here) What's your view on level 4?
I think the biggest issues an arc in dragon ball can have is lack of build up, and lack of confidence. As for build up, refer to the issues with blue and ssj3, and sending goku and vegeta to fight black and zamasu immediately. Part of the reason goku vs frieza and goku vs vegeta were so good was because they were built up for quite a while. The same can be said about gt, with goku getting ssj4 for basically no reason, super 17 and the shadow dragons coming out of nowhere. Then theres the issue of confidence. 90% of Super is copied from stuff that came before, but even besides that, they never try and do anything with any characters besides goku and vegeta because they think that people won't care about any of the other characters. In dbz, the main examples of this I can see are in how both sagas began with an unexpected villain(s) that would eventually devolve into a copy of freeza. I have to like parts of gt because there are definitely sections that feel completely unique compared to anything that came before and after it. They didn't do it particularly well, but the concepts are solid.
I am still not reconciled with fact, that Toei came on with the one of the most stupidest reason to not give us, probably, one of the coolest (next to Super Saiyan 4, of course) transformation in GT. With this concept, DBGT would be more interesting and gave us much more fun! ;-;
Not to defend the Super Android 17 saga (it is undeserving of that), but I think that Krillin's death in that saga was an emotional highlight within that load of crap, especially considering how much Krillin is frequently given the shaft throughout all of Dragon Ball. Also, the Omni-Kings were another major low point of the Universal Survival Saga of Super. I still think we need a cut of the anime where all their dialogue during the actual tournament is removed.
Uub and eventually MajUub should have been the main protagonist for GT. Alongside with Pan, Trunks and Goten. Trunks could have even become the new Bulma with gadgets and Capsule Corp, etc.
How would have it been if the demons of cooldness, aka Frieza's race would had had more protagonism? I mean with proper training a bunch of them could pounded every single saiyan, namekian, tuffle, human and even angel there are
One of my biggest issues with Super was it felt like they through in too many unnecessary ideas that seemed to exist as a 'just in case.' Monaka was treated a bit too seriously to start with, in my opinion. It felt like the writers were thinking about making Monaka an actually powerful character before opting out in favor of him being just a motivator. Same with the 'Goku is Evil' plotline going towards the ToP. I don't mind that Zeno had already planned to erase most of the Universes, but as soon as this was revealed EVERYONE instantly forgave Goku. He may have 'saved' one Universe, but his actions still forced everyone to fight for their lives instead of being erased in peace. And they really built Goku up as this potentially dangerous individual that had too many connections and too little restraint.
I'm from Spain and here we had OG DB first, so we change to DBZ after OG ends... and to be honest, it fitted perfectly, it felt like another chapter in the history that we already known, even all the Freezer saga felt the same way but... DBZ become to much different with OG DB in every way when the Android Saga started
The only thing I didn’t like about Super when they explained time travel with the time rings and how they just put Trunks in his same timeline before Goku Black attacked. Also people reactions to the universe six saiyans transforming to Super Saiyan easily
Honestly by the end of the frieza arc, I was bored to tears and probably would have long ago dropped the series if I hadn't 1. watched original dragonball first and 2. Seen the android, cell, and buu arcs before but disconnected and missed episodes while they were on the air. Z had just gotten too dark and I was struggling to actually care about anything. The stakes were immediately raised too high, there was no fun anymore, and everything just felt dreary and hopeless to the point where even if Goku won in the next episode, I'm not sure I'd care anymore. Good thing the android arc was incredibly fun right off the hat and there wasn't plausibly a way to up the stakes any higher in a way that actually made sense.
I know the reasoning was explained but I honestly get understand leaving drago ball out of the video especially not if your gonna bother with gt. Still an an enjoyable video though and an easy watch for sure.
The biggest issue is that Super still has such significant problems, DESPITE there being a gap of nearly 20 years between the end of GT and Super. For the fact that Z and GT were a phenomenon in Japan and abroad and thus critical discussion emerged and flourished, one would expect that, for the continuation of one of Toei's pillars, the writers and production stuff of Super would've been treated with with more scrutiny and given the time to do their job to the best of their ability. For the lack of care and an actual generational gap between them, Super ends up failing to emulate the feel and pacing of the original series while making the same (if not even worse) mistakes. The only bright spot that I can say is a net positive all around is the Broly film, wholeheartedly. Otherwise, the rest of Super is dragged down to a net negative by dated writing sensibilities, text-box-like back-and-forth direction that makes the series feel like I'm watching someone describe the story to me rather than experiencing it myself (it's REALLY noticeable that Toriyama was not involved with storyboarding the dialogue and action scenes, they lack his penchant for cinematic framing), and just a dullness in pallette, character, and sound that doesn't really impress until the Tournament of Power, HALFWAY INTO THE 130 EPISDOE SHOW.

What about the Ssblue kaioken introduction/fight?
It's not in the manga. Anime writers decided to give him that for some reason
I know, I just thought masakox was talking about the anime only.
Where can I read the dbs manga?
I wish we got more slice of life episodes from super.
The writing was slow and clunky but the slice of life stuff was nice and well written m
I am still not reconciled with fact, that Toei came on with the one of the most stupidest reason to not give us, probably, one of the coolest (next to Super Saiyan 4, of course) transformation in GT. With this concept, DBGT would be more interesting and gave us much more fun! ;-;
I still think we need a cut of the anime where all their dialogue during the actual tournament is removed.
there is no fake Namek, moving on.
(Keep bringing this up, we might as well make it canon.) 🤷🏽♂️
Uub and eventually MajUub should have been the main protagonist for GT. Alongside with Pan, Trunks and Goten. Trunks could have even become the new Bulma with gadgets and Capsule Corp, etc.
I liked the idea that in the universal survival arch there was no villain.
Oh man that Garlic Jr Saga! MAN. Just an absolute adorable filler huh?!
I loved Lazuli in the Super 17 saga with her going after him to avenge Krillin
What if goku was the legendary super saiyan
13:45 “Both the movie and the saga managed to make Frieza... Boring...!”
All I can hear is “I’m bored.” “What?!” “I said I’m bored. You’re boring me.”
My Top 3 Dragon Ball Sagas are
1. Cell Saga
2. Tournament of Power
3. Frieza Saga
That’s exactly backwards.
@@Shapes_Quality_Control
In your opinion , this is my opinion
@@CJ-qv4sd But cell is soooooo lame!
@@Shapes_Quality_Control
Yet again that’s your opinion
my favorite villain is Cell btw
@@CJ-qv4sd But have you considered how lame he is?
I'm from Spain and here we had OG DB first, so we change to DBZ after OG ends... and to be honest, it fitted perfectly, it felt like another chapter in the history that we already known, even all the Freezer saga felt the same way but... DBZ become to much different with OG DB in every way when the Android Saga started
The only thing I didn’t like about Super when they explained time travel with the time rings and how they just put Trunks in his same timeline before Goku Black attacked. Also people reactions to the universe six saiyans transforming to Super Saiyan easily
You should do if garlic Jr would of controlled earth still when frieza and cold came
And can you believe that Zamasu was inspired from Xicor?
The worst of all. Dragonball the movie!
Goku Black arc was laughably bad. Hands down the worst one I've watched.
I agree. Starts off with thr best start yo a saga than gets bland and asspully towards the middle then horrible at the end.
Saiyan saga with Gohans tail regrowing right when they needed it too was a ass pull
I like the frieza arc the best .., without the filler
I'm still pissed they kicked Krillin out of the tournament so damn early (16th) and by a tail swipe. Ridiculous.
It is Krillin's own fault for celebrating early & leaving himself open for attack
My first exposure to dragonball was ginyu force vs team 3star then goku vs frieza before being cut i was hooked
I know the reasoning was explained but I honestly get understand leaving drago ball out of the video especially not if your gonna bother with gt. Still an an enjoyable video though and an easy watch for sure.
I liked both Dark Start arcs because they basically said there will be consequences no matter what this time.
10:48 **AND THAT'S WHY HE GOT INTO FIGHTERZ**
I liked top for the world building mainly and 17s charecter development
I think a good video would be the Tournament of Power anime vs the manga
