Hey! Thanks for watching. Loved how this episode turned out. You can find all of the resources I used in the show notes. I see a lot of angry comments, but remember, the question was should YOU wear weighted clothing. Goku is a super buff alien and he can obviously pull it off, but would using our Earth-version of weighted clothing give you similar benefits? Keeping that in mind, I stand by my conclusion. -- KH
Your science is over 9000!!!, i have to stop using dumbbell as punching weight, i always using dumbbell as punch training, i thought it could help with my arm strength, but when i see your explanation, i think i should stop doing that.
I know this probably wont be answered. But if I where to lose weight an add the amount of weight I lost keeping my weight the same overall would it help? Maybe even only adding half the weight. For every pounds I lose adding 1.
Dude. Bro. This is my first Because Science video viewing, and every other second you look like you're about to poop really hard. Not a huge hinderance or feature, but it is entertaining.

"You should only be wearing weighted clothing during training, and not all of the time".... That's where the comparison went wrong. Goku trains ALL THE TIME!
He's not saying the gains aren't good, he's saying they're not going to be like in Dragonball where the characters train for a month and can suddenly leap over a house.

@@husseinrima2571 hi explanation. in Japanese sounds like ku and other u characters aren’t always pronounced as ooo like you may expect. instead sometimes there’s not really a sound at all, and it’s more of a marker between consonants. this could be the case for krillin, so take away the u of ku and you’ve got kririn. R and L are the same characters because the pronunciation is actually somewhere in between so it can be interchangeable in romanization. so now you’ve got Krilin. And I imagine the second l is just cause it looks better. Same thing happens with Buruma becoming bulma. now if you wanna get real funky with romanization, then Korean gets even weirder, but in my experience Japanese is pretty consistent!
'slight improvments in agility' Yeah. But when you plateau at the highest level of fitness, small improvements go a long way. Especially when you are competing.
@@boracebecioglu9563 I feel like if you wore weighted clothes all the time. Nothing crazy, just enough to feel it. You would definitely gain with out hurting yourself. When it no longer feels heavy go up just enough to feel weight again. You also would get a bit of speed and energy cause you would be lighter, when you remove it. That is just logical lol.
Usually these kind of studies are done on beginners since the change is easier to measure when it is relatively larger and the adaptations are usually also faster. Pro athlete is most likely not going to get as much benefit as a beginner if any.
I think they tested for wrong results. Yes, you can sprint for about a second faster, or do less than a 10 pushups more, but that's also not what you trained. What you trained is not the strength exactly. Afterall, you didn't do much while wearing it. What you did though is wear it constantly. which means you trained constantly. So what you actually trained the most is not strength, but endurance.
The DBZ characters also had several several YEARS of training with them, from young ages. The time span alone could compensate their bodies into recognition of the weight. All of what you said is true, if you're sloppy while wearing them you'll get hurt. But flexibility training, and constant focus put on those exposed joints would be a lot like doing a workout till absolute failure. So long as you dont let your weights to get too heavy too soon you should be fine. Remember Goku was stronger than a grown man before he could walk. So the point of this practice is to have constant tension put on his body to make him have to constantly watch what hes doing. It helps his focus and control over his body. So that even if he took them off, or was fighting he WASNT just swinging around radically and losing control over his joints, tendons, etc. If you dont train or wear them the RIGHT way with your focus and alert on high at all times like every second you're wearing them you'll get hurt. You have to focus on not hyper extending at any time. Constant working out, hes not just wearing them like clothes, every move he makes is planned out. So that when he does lift his arm for something small like scratching his head or holding a cup hes making sure his whole body is in on it and making the conscious effort to move around without putting too much strain on his shoulder, rotator cuff, and elbows. His whole body is moving around with insane amounts of control. The more your body acclimates to that level of focus, the better off you'll be doing this training. Side note, goku is an alien who's body literally doubles its ability with every last rep and battle. So this training is literally perfect for his race. Humans would not be able to advance that fast without doing the training at a very young age. And of course with much lighter weights. If the body is used to being that heavy it'll compensate, if you focus on all of your movements and dont fling around willy nilly you should be fine. But again that's a "every second of every day" kind of thing. 24/7 focus, no matter what.
@@russ7009 you do know that you can train WITHOUT bulking up, right? Toning is just as important as bulking if not more. And for kids its just like endurance training which IS fine. Dont be like future Trunks, okay?

Used to do breakdance, my instructors made me use ankle weights for some minutes during training to make me kick more strongly and get more inertia to get all the crazy rotation stuff. I think, as studies say, it s very good for agility based training but nothing more.
dude, a few weeks of training and u can run 1 second faster, 10 more push ups, 4 inch higher vert??? thats amazing. do u know how much a second counts in sprinting? and how much 4 inches is in a jump? those r huge increases in short amounts of time
Daniel Cha yea despite those numbers being small it is still an increase. And increase that might oh idk....get first in the olympics? Yea.....everything cm and second counts
This is interesting. I was actually planning on doing an experiment that included a weighted vest, ankle weights and shoulder weights (biceps really) as well as a weighted belt. The weight would gradually go up, rather than be conistent. Up until now I deemed this as merely another experiment among many but I see now I must do this for the benefit of science! Very motivating to say the least!
The bit at 7:23 is important to mention though. Having significant downward pressure on your limbs can mess up your joints if you're not careful enough. Particularly the shoulder since tries to stabilize the weight on your arm.
I did actually use to wear a 20lb vest while doing no impact cardio and some lifting. I thought it was fantastic. Made me feel great and I had more and more control of my body.
agree. I was wearing 2,5kg huge metal chains tied on my ankles for two months whole day and in the end of it when i release them and go sleep i have incredible speed in my legs. Back then i was doing martial arts
Clearly weighted boots and wrist bands are dangerous for humans, but due to Saiyan's "special" ability to get stronger every time they survive an injury, wearing workout equipment that regularly inflicts small joint injuries may actually be very useful for Goku.
The injuries have to be life threatening in order for a "ZENKAI boost" to kick in and substantially increase their strength. Besides that, their battle power only evolves through training or during actual combat. Small "micro tears" is a result that comes from normal resistance training.
thats why 10+ years ago when I was practicing martial arts almost fulltime, i only bothered with ankle and wrist weights. I only wore them outside of the actual training times. the point was to make every little action: walking, cooking, working, etc an extra effort by itself, to not let my arms and legs just drop, to make every movement consciously and purposefully. The end result wasnt to make my muscles grow or anything like that, but make some muscles around my joints more durable. I found that my joints were able to withstand higher impacts/recoils from my own punches and kicks. But that was then, and here i am now. more than 10 years later. Suffered an injury that theres no way to 100% recover from. Spinal nerve damage. I had to give up martial arts. I can do most activities but with some limitations and every once in awhile my legs or parts of my legs would go numb and then Id have to use a cane to keep my self from dropping to the ground all of the sudden in front of people.
Life is more than martial arts. focus on life. focus on enjoying all aspects of life. Same things happen with many stunts-man, that retire from stunts and start management, business, etc. just family life. LIFE !!
When I was younger, I was inspired by DBZ and bought weights for my ankles and wearing them all the time including when I was training for sprinting. My trainer told me that I was overdoing it and might damage my legs, and well he was right. Over 15 years later I'm still having long term effects that make me sometimes have a slight limp when I walk...
Just take flax seed oil for a couple of months and soak your entire body in hot water, then cold water, then hot water and you will probably be as good as new. I did the same thing and I am stronger than ever.
I've experimented with weights while running and found that putting weights above your knees and above your elbows (just under biceps) is the most comfortable, and actually improves my form.
*Wear 8 shirts and 4 wrist bands all soaked in water (or coconut oil).* I think that those increases in numbers are actually pretty good given that it takes so long to see gains when you’re already close to your max gains. I was 440lbs, and when I got to 340lbs I felt skinny and as light as a feather walking around, even though I was 340lbs lol... Having that extra weight definitely helps for training.
Morale of the Story: Weighted clothing is useful and smart aslong as its within training and giving your body rest time (Time dependant on your fitness level).Don't go trying to put on weight equal to your own body weight and begin training....No your not physically ready, you have to work your way up as you do in any type of training.A perfect example of a similar scenario is the military, you run in heavy boots aswell as a 45 pound ruck in a course of 2 to 3 months and over the course of time (Not just 2 weeks of slounging around like the study he mentioned) you will get stronger because your body is adapting to a new workload. In conclusion weighted clothing is useful for the physically fit looking to get even more fit now unless your a pt god (which your probably not if your watching this video, including myself just yet)you have to be able to understand your limits and what your body is capable of, otherwise you ineveitbly will hurt yourself.
5:30 vertical jump increased 4 inches?? That’s a great improvement! Why is he downplaying that? Especially since the studies he mentioned were only conducted for a few weeks

Yes I have a question: so, if it's the nitrogen in our atmosphere that makes the sky blue, and the chlorophyll that makes grass green, then what would create the green skies and blue plants like we see on Namek? Keeping in mind that the atmosphere on Namek is still relatively safe and breathable for humans!
Possibly some green refraction or reflection gasses in a band like our ozone layer, changing the perceived color of the sky, while only affecting the breathability of the upper atmosphere, which wouldn't be any LESS safe for humans than the upper atmosphere on earth. Edit: Not sure what gasses those might be though.
You would have to have light of a wavelenght 490-570(green part of the spectrum) be refracted but which gas compositions and how thich of an atmosphere you need idk and considering the short wavelenght part of the spectrum is usually refracted its not likely.
you would need to examine what it is about the nitrogen that causes our sky to appear blue. It's not the chemical makeup, it's the particles themselves. Raleigh scattering is what makes our skies blue, but it is also what makes our sunset red, as demonstrated in a brilliant lecture by Walter Lewin. The color can change based on how much of the atmosphere you need to travel through. You might have heard of a phenomenon known as The Green Flash, which occurs just before sundown on a clear day. There's a reason for this. It's actually due to the bending of light around earth, and green light gets bent a little less than red light so you sometimes see a second image of the sun descending in green. The green flash. Little known is that there's actually a full rainbow there, but the orange and yellow are harder to see on days when the green is there, and blend in with the reddening sky on other days. You need the right conditions, and the blue and purple are there as well but you'd never see them against an otherwise blue sky. Raleigh scattering works the same way. Light gets refracted and all that's left is blue because it gets refracted less. So if the thickness of the particles in the atmosphere were just right, the sky would appear green. This might even mean that there's more oxygen, so while plant life would be diminished, animal life would increase Now, the plants. Blue plant life is typically rare, due to the advantageous effects of having green chlorophyll. However, there are a few plants that grow in low light situations, that use a tweaked red-anthocyanin to reflect blue light, and absorb everything else. Given the dimmer lighting conditions of a planet with a green sky and the lower levels of Carbon-dioxide, plants might have opted to use this strategy to absorb lower light colors and reflect blue, and better absorb CO2, if they even work based on CO2 They could use nitrogen, perhaps. Also possible is that chlorophyll on that planet simply chose blue, since we don't really know why green chlorophyll is so dominant on our planet. It could just have easily been blue and worked nearly as well. The real reason is more likely that akira toriyama thought it would be easier to create an alien looking planet by swapping the colors of two commonly drawn items. It's a common trick in digital editing, and you'll notice it if you've ever inverted the colors on any image. Things simply look alien when you swap colors around, so that's probably what he did.
Hey kyle. Did you assume gokus t shirt was as thin as a typical t shirt? I believe his blue shirt always looked pretty thick. It could hold weighted material in the thickness of the shirt because it definitely doesnt look as thin as a regular shirt.
trust me, he knows it wasnt normal. i THINK this video came about because of a tweet i sent, asking what material his clothes could be made out of, to weigh as much as they do..
When I was younger I tried Weighted training. Weights consisted of: * Kevlar vest if substituting Kevlar for metal plates can simulate a weighted shirt. It's bulky but I have done this. * In addition leg ankle weights (not very healthy for your ankles) and wrist weights. * ADD to that a 50lb rucksack and you will feel the G. It was around 100 extra pounds. Now should you do this? I don't recommended. I did this for a little over 5 years starting when I was around 13 and the side effects where that: * While I was a lot stronger than I looked due to my bones and muscles becoming denser. * When I started having back pain, my chiropractor, who I visited later after years of training , informed me that my spine had compressed and the back neck pain that I felt was due to serious bone compression in my mid back, lower back and neck. More specifically It was between the disks that would handle the natural curvature of the spine and support most of the weight when shifting and siting. * Those same disk ligaments had calcified a bit and my range of flexible motion had been reduced by 30%. * Another side effect was that my body got used to the weight and when I stopped wearing the weights after years of training my body would want to consume food to reach the weight it was used to. * I also gained Hypertension or high blood pressure from these compounding factors. If you are going to weight train don't do it for extended period of time and when you do have a certificated trainer and visit a physical therapist to monitor these side effects. I would not recommend weight training until after puberty when you reach your growth peak around age 21-23. Otherwise you can hinder your bone growth or damage your spine.
i was just about to say, if u do it when ur still growing, it will mess up your body. i myself have been done growing since 8th grade and im 20 years old now, so im thinking of giving weighted clothes a shot
@@lilahdog568 - Same. Some advise though. Apart from weighted wrist/ankle bands and a vest. I also have some high quality support braces for my elbows and knees. And a large waist belt that supports a little of my middle back, and all of my lower back. I suggest you buy some of this stuff just to be on the safe side.
I think the biggest problem is that wearing weighted gear all the time maybe doesn't give your muscles sufficient time to regenerate their muscle fibers, which is why it's better to train smart and not necessarily just hard.
Well moderation is a thing, steadily increasing the weight over time through training and conditioning your body until that weight diffrence isnt a factor than upping the weight would be more efficient
Or you could just work out using the methods we've been using for thousands and thousands and thousands of years, now improved and better understood with science. But hey, if you want to make weighted clothes and pull every freaking muscle in your body with weighted clothing even though the work's been done thousands of times over (seriously, the studies are in the description! Seriously!!!) and also even though Kyle already answered the question, then knock yourself out. Someone might point out how old the comment is. To that I ask, do you believe I care? Please let me know if you do. I *truly* want to know.
@@ChristophBrinkmannslight gains are still gains. Besides, wearing weighted clothing doesn’t mean doing an entirely new routine, so I don’t understand why you have to sound like he’s suggesting some crazy anime training that would totally rip every single fiber in your body if it was even possible. Besides, some other guy already stated that training like this could be done, you just have to constantly focus and put your entire body behind your movements, so it does improve just your general form and focus, with the agility taking the backseat here.
Goku's shirt is totally plausible if you take the Mythbusters' approach and try to replicate the results. 190 cubic inches of tungsten is about 60kg. The shirt Goku wore definitely looks much thicker than a regular shirt, and there's nothing saying it has to be made like a regular shirt, requiring a specific fabric with an enormous density. If you were able to disperse the metal over the shirt's surface area, you can start to get an idea of how thick the shirt would have to be. I think you could store the weight across the shirt by having a cell/quilted like structure, holding crushed tungsten. Much like weighted blankets are made. This would hold the weight, as well as allow for movement flexibility. You can quibble about specifics, but this is the general idea. Based off of one of my shirts, I used a surface area of 1000 sq inches, because that was a good deal smaller than my 1200 sq inch large shirt I used as a reference. If you divide that 190 cu inch by 1000, the tungsten would be .19" thick, uniformly across the surface area of the shirt. Since this is if it was a solid sheet, I assumed that 25% of the shirt's area would be taken up by the quilting pattern. This would consolidate the tungsten to 75% of the surface area, pushing up the thickness a bit. Meaning that the shirt would be about .25 inches thick. We don't see a quilted pattern. So let's assume, like a weighted blanket, that there is a durable exterior layer that masks and protects the structure underneath. I think Goku's shirt could totally pass for 1/4" thick and would be flexible, yet difficult enough to move around in to explain his difficulty taking it off. There you have it, a 60kg tungsten weighted shirt that is a plausible solution for Goku's training undergarment.
I actually tried this for three weeks. If you're interested, here's how it went down... I've been training for years, Boxing, Muay Thai and MMA. A couple years back, just before COVID, I got invited to fight in Strelka. I hadn't had a fight since my late twenties and I was one of the oldest fighters on the roster, so to get the edge over the younger competition, I thought I'd give it a try. I lived in (at home only) and trained with 2-2kg wrist weights on each forearm, the same on each leg and a 30kg vest strapped to my upper body. At home: Doing regular shit, like frying an egg was beyond frustrating, because all the gear would just get in the way. Eventually, I started walking around the house like a crab, so I didn't knock shit over and that included my kids! After a couple days, I started keeping my forearms bent in a semi-curl position without realizing, because I wasn't feeling any beneficial resistance on the muscle groups I was trying to target. After about a week, I had to keep them like that to relieve the strain off my rotator cuffs. I could feel some minor benefit in my core, because I had to WORK to keep a solid posture at all times, but in general, I could feel the unnatural position actually changing my posture for the worse. In terms of legs, I didn't really notice a difference. MMA and crossfit are pretty leg intensive, so maybe I didn't use enough weight or walk around enough, but I definitely felt it in the ligaments in my feet (and not in a good way), because I constantly had to correct my center of balance. I didn't try weighted sleeping, but I'm pretty sure it's a bitch! During training: Training was more frustrating than day to day life. Weighted training gear has it's benefits, but when you strap weights onto places that don't need them, they seriously get in the way! For example, pushups are nearly impossible with wrist weights, because your wrists can't bend. Sit-ups are awesome with wrist weight's but the vest restricts you from fully sitting up. Funny enough, I found bag and pad work to be the most counter-productive of the lot! I actually thought I'd gain in this department. The weights kept flying back and forth when I punched, especially with jabs and crosses. I had to keep resetting them, which took more time then the actual training itself! With kicking, I could feel some benefit with teeps, but with roundhouse kicks, the weights flung me off balance and stopped me from following through into my target and once again, just like with my wrists, it restricted joint movement in my ankles. The vest just got in the way of everything. There's my personal account. I hope that gives some insight to all the potential SSJ's out there... Weighted training gear isn't gonna miraculously help you achieve the transformation! They don't simulate extra gravity (like you think), because the extra weight isn't evenly distributed throughout your body. Give it a bash, maybe you'll get so angry from trying to live and train in them, that you'll explode and your hair will turn yellow 😀 Personally, all I gained was wasting three weeks of crucial training time. To be honest, you'll probably gain more by jogging with a barbell... Brilliantly done vid, I laughed my ass off 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Kyle, I went through your videos and noticed something very sad. I’m appalled, APPALLED I SAY, that you haven’t done a video on the physics of the helicarrier. You must rectify this with haste! Back to the video, you are correct. In exercise physiology, it is all about internal adaptation to external work, defined as W=FxD. In that regard, his muscles would definitely have to increase in CSA to adapt. With that being said, it’s not humanly possible to hit this for one reason: CSA. In studies comparing body builders to recreational lifters and sedentary individuals, body builders and recreational lifters have no difference in cross-sectional area but both are significantly higher than sedentary. The difference between body builders and recreational lifters is an increase in fiber count. It could be hyperplasia but that is still a hypothetical based on limited evidence. Even with inhibition of myostatin, the “brake system” to muscle growth, there is still a physiological ceiling. I’m also happy you brought up the articles showing no meaningful effect of weighted clothes. Similar to the “altitude simulating masks” and sauna suits, the training adaptation is mitigated by reduced training capacity, to wit, you’re restraining your training and therefore minimizing adaptation. Not to mention, they look like fools. ...Helicarrier! Do it! Do it now!
My best friend is a cross country runner with a full ride from his college and he uses altitude masks there’s got to be some benefits at that level right? Where he’s still running the same distance and uses one every day he just tries to do it to acclimate to less oxygen per breath.
Altitude masks have little to no benefit whatsoever. The person must also live in high altitude atmosphere in order to gain the benefits. The mask is, however, great at identifying tools in the gym.
I carried a roughly 80 pound pack in HS. I had an insane vertical leap, and the most impressive looking lower half imaginable. But I didn't actually exercise so I had very little stamina to go with it.
Well up to 1 week ago for the while school year I was using a 70 pound backpack as well I dosen't hurt your back if you sit and stand straight the only problem I had was a strain on my knees and it hurt sometimes and I me legs grew a lot
5:30 what he is talking about? A 4 inch increase in a jump is great. Same with pushups and a 1 second decrease in a sprint?!? Imagine running a 3:70 40yr dash rather than a 4:70
It depends on the particulars of the study (standard deviations, for instance, how experienced the participants were prior to the beginning of the study, whether weighted garments were compared to normal exercise without the garments, etc.
Okay. I have actually done this. In military training, we wear heavy backpacks, and often have fitness events where we walk with them. It's hard, sweaty work. To prepare for this, I used a weight vest, ankle and wrist weights. There is NO WAY anyone should try jogging, running, or any other activity except walking. You'd just be asking for sprained ligaments and tendons, wrenched vertebrae, and potentially permanent damage. Martial arts katas?! Please folks, do not take fitness advice from a cartoon character! With an hour's brisk walk twice a week, I did find some benefits. Front of the deltoid, biceps, quads, hamstrings, calves, and the external obliques got a good workout. Lots of sweat, I'd estimate it burns 300 calories. If you're expecting to carry a heavy backpack, as in mountain climbing or cross-country walking, then yes, I can recommend this training. Wear the weights only for that hour's walk, and remove and clean them promptly after -- do not wear them throughout the day! The legs and obliques may bulk up a bit, so pair this with a good upper body weight regimen. Every body is different. I would not recommend this if you have joint problems or if you're already packing a lot of extra pounds; stick to walking, bicycling and swimming. Also I strongly discourage this training until you're fully grown. Heavy backpacks on children can lead to spinal injuries. Stop training immediately if you feel any discomfort in the joints, especially the rotator cuffs, spine, or knees. As this is rough on the joints, allow plenty of recovery time -- no more than twice a week. Be certain to walk on a strictly level surface. With all that weight, you increase the possibility of stumbling and spraining an ankle. A running track is ideal. Well padded combat boots will help support the ankles, while giving their own workout to the front and side ankle muscles. Wait for a cool day, and have water available. This is not a gentle exercise and it's very specialized, but with these guidelines in place, carefully try it and see if it's right for you.
Commando Solo, your forgetting a few things. If you have your pack on properly and to avoid injury, alot of the weight of that pack is worn at the hips/waist and not the shoulders back. The Weight is evenly distributed to avoid stress injuries and you are conditioned to deal with the extra weight as a necessity, and you carry 100+ lbs of gear not including weapons, ammo, water and such as you need all that gear and not for strength training. Regular PT does more for your Fitness than carrying that pack ever will.
I found my weight vest more comfortable than any backpack. The weight is draped across the shoulders very evenly rather than concentrated by the LBE's narrower straps. By no means have I advocated this as a substitute for standard military PT training, but as an optional cross-training supplement, like swimming or bicycling. And then only if the body responds to it well. In my experience, running does not train the legs in quite the same way this does, making this an attractive "train as you fight" option. My anecdotal account is of course no substitute for an actual scientific study, the only sensible way to validate or disprove it.
yes true, but weight training is definitely better if you are training to do high energy activities in weighted gear, like medieval reenactment as i do, rather than having that boost when you kit down, its to keep you well adjusted to the weight of your gear
As someone who's a huge dragonball fan, I really appreciated all the effort that clearly went into making this as accurate to the series as possible! Thank you so much for the awesome videos!

@@therabbitpants2199 lmfao more like if a character can keep up with goku then he's relevant, for example, had vegeta not gotten royal blue well...yeah
Actually, wearing wrist and ankle weights could possibly have some benefits, but only if they were EXTREMELY light. Remember that although Goku wore 20 kg boots, at that time he could lift well over 2 tons, which makes each boot less than 1% of the maximum load on his body. Hence, an average martial artist that could deadlift 100 kg would wear ankle weights of less than a kilo. To a trained person with strengthened bones and ligaments, such a minor weight wouldn’t cause any strain if used carefully, but would make their kicks slower, just like in DBZ.
I shadow box with 2.5 lb each hand im 6 foot tall 185 lb used to lift a while back got back to it January currently I can curl 145 lb with barbell , front squat 240, bench around 250 (haven't been able to bench no spotter issues) lifts are just for perspective but you think I should shadowbox with 2.5lb wrist weights
Ace 2,5 pound weights are probably suitable for you, just start slow and progress from there. I’m kinda surprised you can bench more than you squat. You may want to do some more leg work. Very impressive lifts, though
Though I'd highly recommendable to do extra exercise that trains your joints to adapt to the weights. And start with less on those for rapid movement. Because rapid movement like that are probably something that most body builders muscles aren't used to. More of a martial art thing. Overstretched muscles are no fun. Maybe 1 lb
I want to put my 2 cents in: So at one point, i was training for the ninja warrior competition, and to help me, my work let me wear some ankle and wrist weights. Each one had a total of 10 lbs. I didn't do anything too strenuous, just did the usual walking around, lifting up my arms as needed, etc. After about 8 hours of constant use, i gotta say the effects were amazing. I took them off and immediately i felt as light as a feather. Each step, my legs felt like they had much more power behind them then they usually did that i almost felt like i was just about to break into sprint with each step. Now the downsides: 1. They are very clunky. It may just have been the brand i was using, but it had cloth with pockets for sand packets to increase that weight. Almost looked like the cusps you would see in old cartoons that came with ball and chains. This made some delicate tasks very hard to do. Not to mention they weren't very tight, so they would slip up and down your arm as you moved it around. 2. The cloth was very irritating. To increase their durability they were made with the same stuff you would see on laptop bags or backpacks. Which made it very scratchy and irritating on your skin. 3. Running was practically impossible. With the irritating cloth, the constant movement up and down your legs, not to mention the clunky style, they would constantly hit against each other as you run, and even set you off balance a lot.
Ninja Hombrepalito Not, really the same I think. I'm not sure if that makes a sense in English, but the light emitted by the Aura isn't guided like the one in the helmet and the aura looks like it's around him and not inside of him, because a nine guided light is spreading in all directions from it's source, I think they could be blinded by their own aura. Sorry if guided isn't the correct term. I'm not a native speaker.
Gianni daCatanzaro even though they probably can't see through the aura they generate, they have a useful skill to counteract this weakness (wouldn't call Aura a weaknesses) is by sensing the opponents energy maybe that's why even super saiyan's can still fight even though there's an aura surrounding them
It's actually a bit harder to compare a DBZ character with Cap, as I don't think we have any real data on how much of their physical abilities are actually passive buffs by their Ki (using game terms here because I think it's the fastest way to put that into words).
you also can't forget base from compared to any other from im gonna get hate but when u go ss its 2.5x or 10x the amount so yeah. just on a base form he more powerful, but caps hella strong. if he got mad enough and put his emotions into it witch was seen in the 2nd movie you can see he literately does what blonde android does and destroyed a punching bag/strength machine, and im telling you a punching bag has alooooooot of force to put into it. when u consider material and size of the bag.
I think the goal/point of weighted clothes is that you slowly work up to the crazy high numbers like in dbz. Goku trained with Kami for 3 years using weighted clothes; I doubt he went straight from nothing to ~140kg. Same goes with the gravity training; it took time for Goku to work up to the 100g training (with a bag of senzu to go with it). So yeah, just putting on a ton of weighted clothes is dangerous and inefficient...the same way doing any exercise super crazy right off the bat is dangerous.
hes also an alien from a race of super warriors. he can probably gain faster than normal. unlike krillin who is just human who as i understand also trained with roshi at the same time with less results.
@@Kakkarot22 Okay but how about we talk Human standards since sayians get more powerful the more serious there injury is then pushing themselves as hard as possible is the way to go but us we can't it's takes longer we have to keep a exponential growth over a period of time only when you get accustomed to a certain weight that you should do progressive overload to keep your body pushing for that little bit of strength everytime you increase the weight without risk of injury
I think Goku (and saiyans in general) can get away with weighted clothing because they're just naturally tougher than humans in so many ways. As for Namekians, they regenerate at a faster rate or at least can force themselves to do so. Joint pain won't be an issue if they can merely repair their ligaments, muscles and tendons.
@@TaffieTheCapy I mean, they must have some sort of hard bone structure or they can't walk and stuff unless they're just made of really really dense muscle
What if you had an exoskeleton and brace so you don’t hurt your joints or back? Slowly moving up the weight as you train instead of just jumping to goku, I think you’d be able to do gokus eventually without getting hurt.
Actually, the first mention of weighted clothing appears before in dragonball. Goku and Kulilin used weighted turtle shells for their first training with Kame Sennin.
I'm pretty sure they said that the first turtle shell they were wearing ws 20kg. And then when they were done with that training they shifted to 40kg. Those numbers were big already so they could only get huge with power creep.
@@PapaBearIsHere Nah, the breakdown of weight distribution was Dragonball as well during teen Goku's rematch with Tien after training with Kami for 3 years
What? Do you truly believe that a fictional over-exaggerated weighted clothes density (for kids "WHOA" reasons) is more "calculable" than a Turtle Shell's the size of a kid? I mean, it's way easier to use something more relatable with reality (like turtle shells) to do ANY math than to get numbers purposely made so huge the density would match the sun's core. It's way more believable that's just a shonen clichè strategy. Just raising numbers to match the power of the opponent without giving it much of a thought, which results in impossible material density.
ACKCHULLY, Goku was on King Kai's planet when he did the 10 ton weight feat which means they were 100 ton weights on each limb. He also had access to Super Saiyan 3 at that point in time which is a 400x multiplier from his base. If you assume that Goku could just barely move enough to lift his arms once in base with the 100 tons per arm, he could do the same thing in Super Saiyan 3 with 40,000 total tons per limb. He's 40,000 times stronger than Captain America at that time in the series.
Goku *wears 100 pounds worth of clothes* "Whew that was tough, but now I can destroy average people while wearing the clothes and defeat masters without my clothes" Normal person *wears 100 pounds worth of clothes* "I regret everything, now I'm in the hospital and I'm hardly better than before."
I imagine actual artifical gravity training might be more beneficial. The total weight increase won't be centered or positioned in singular spots (Ankles, wrists, lower torso, etc.) it'll be spread almost perfectly evenly across every cell in your body. Every muscle has to work harder just to expand or contract. Doing slow, deliberate strength training under artificially increased gravity could make it easier to work all your muscles at once.
Dicerson I think you're right but the only down side would be that it is Everything is increasing including eyes, lungs, bones, etc. What these things are made of wouldn't change and I can't imagine it's healthy having 2lbs eyes lol
The issue of torque still comes into play though. Your joints and ligaments are still made of the same gooey and stretchy stuff, so they won't be able to adapt in the extraordinary ways like they do in the anime. Doing something like jumping jacks or attempting one handed pushes like Vegeta will put intense strain on all your joints, especially your rotator cuff. You can however still wear a really cool pink shirt like Vegeta though.
When we think about artificial gravity it is easy to imagine that it would even increase your mass across your whole body, but because the effect of gravity is only in one net direction, it causes some imbalance weirdness. For martial arts purposes it would cause some very weird imbalances, imagine the amazing strength that you would build to literally hold your guard up, but how little benefit you would gain in a punching movement...
As has been made clear in this video weight training like this in real life would be impracticable, but in reading through some of the comments trying to justify it for Goku everyone seems to be thinking of the saiyan biology as an excuse and are forgetting the one thing that Goku is actually training; hint it's not his muscles, it's his Ki/Chi control. Having weighted clothing means he has to focus more of his Ki/Chi into parts of his body to support the extra weight when he removes the extra weight he is enabling himself to move faster not only because he has less mass but also because the Ki/Chi being used to support that weight can be redistributed into different areas for a burst of speed.
@@goofypig2277 first off he's not bald he shaves secondly the way I see it he's been in more fights because he has the balls to die trying... The Dragon Balls
I'd say because Yamcha and the other humans figured out that "oh shit, these fucking super aliens and death robots are way the fuck out of our league. We better let Goku handle them, we will just get the the way' Krillin, meanwhile, kept tagging along against opponents who were clearly untouchable by him or really any of the human characters.
1) Goku is a Saiyen not a human. 2) goku likely built up to that level with all his training. 3) the benefits are "potentially " there if done right, and that is what is shown in the anime. Goku trained to fight with the weighted clothes over a few years. the presumption here is not a directly fair comparison
Not really, at least to me from my experience and opinion because I have shadow boxed multiple times just a few years ago with 10 pound dumbells and I didn't get injured at all, not even a little but it has made me stronger and faster, not like Goku and Piccolo of course but it was better than nothing. Kind of like what Kyle explained in the video
in the case of weighted clothes, less is more. Your meant to slowly add on weight like any other strength training regime. Through the effects of continuous use of weights/heavy boots on ankles is even worse for your health than the wrist example given in the video. From what I hear anyway cause that's just common sense. Using your own weight to train leg strength is better in the long term. Thus why squats/crunches are mentioned in nearly every workout routine. Your legs and core are essential for taking on every aspect of physical training. including lifting with your arms. Weighing them down is gonna cause more harm than good
multiple times is the key here, and 10 pounds is not a lot of weight. You shouldnt really add more than like 10% of your body weight for extended periods of times.
He said that the advantages are small, not that the advantages have 0 value to absolutely everyone. Seems pretty clear his point is that weighted clothing won't make an appreciable difference in general fitness training. If you're training for competition in a physical event that is won or lost by tiny fractions of a second, then his point doesn't apply because you aren't training for general fitness.
Unless im mistake tien has some kind of alien background (not like u could really consider him a normal human anyway) so technically krillin is strongest.........i could be completely wrong though
I'm extremely confused, at 5:00 he treated the results like they weren't much for the jumping but even increasing bye 5 centimeters in a month is incredible if you are a professional high jumper and notice that improvement consistently you would be able to jump an extra meter in just 20 months (i know this isn't realistic seeing improvement that consistant, but still)
Super Nerd Sean (Pee-ry) here with some show semantics and terrible consiquences of being a human doing Sayan training: For Sayans, they have an exception to their anatomy that makes it so no human should EVER train like they do. When a Sayan gets injured, and recovers from that injury, they become more powerful. The worse the injury the stronger they become. This means that after a certain point, when they can survive punches to the face, it becomes more effective for Sayans to just thoroughly damage themselves rather than doing classic strength training. This, oddly enough, lines up really well with Gokus training regiments. He does so many things so wrong that it is impossible for him to not be getting constant back injuries and fractures. In the episode where he tosses the densest material in the universe, he has his legs spread super far apart instead of shoulder width, which would put undo strain on the groin. Through observing Gokus actions in the show, it becomes clear that he has unintentionally trained his body to use the most inefficient methods of doing things (in everything but fighting) because of this trait. He lifts with his back, uses jerking motions when pulling or lifting, he off-centers weight and even when he stretches he yanks around his joints before he exercises instead of doing proper stretching techniques which should be slow and after a workout. It is so bad for the body that it appears to be that he is deliberately trying to damage himself in everything he does. I wanted to go over the episode where Goku get 8 tons suddenly added to each limb (of which he is currently hold 2 tons on each), when he starts to use the 10 ton weights. And since Japan uses the metric system that means this is 8,000kg on a planet with 10Gs so 784kN of force on each limb. Random internet sources can't agree on what the force needed to rip off an arm is and 2 hours isn't enough time to dig that question without some kind of lead or ending on a biased/non-scientific result, so we'll just go with the highest guess which was 200kN. 784/200 = 3.92 times the force required to rip off a normal persons arms and legs. (probably) Ya, if Goku were a human this sudden addition of weight would have torn every single limb from his body (if he remained floating), strength be damned when sudden unexpected weight drops at the rate of 10 times Earths gravity. Some sources I ran across estimated that it takes less than a kilo-newton of impact force to dislocate a shoulder, so please, don't try to be a Sayan people. So please, stick to One Punch Man workouts if you want to be a super hero; even then be cautious not to over extend yourself on the full regiment if you haven't done appropriate conditioning before hand.
The zenkai boost has never been retconned (aside from being retconned in during the Namek Saga) and was always adhered to. It only ever happened whenever a character nearly died and then was healed. Vegeta nearly dying to Zarbon then Recoome then Krillin. Goku to himself numerous times and then Vegeta/Ginyu. Gohan to Recoome and then Freeza. Cell to himself (that's why the whole Super Perfect thing happened). It's always worked that way.
But then his legs would be really weak. He would only be an idiot, walking with his hands, with flabby legs. This made so much sense to me; am I alone here?
Your studies and data points to comparison between zero weights and 100% of the weight. What about slowly increasing the weights while doing the training, so the body gets used to the new weight distribution? For example, you mentioned the rotational forces on the pivot points of the body would be dangerous with weighed wristbands, but if you increase the weight very gradually, won't the body get used to the new weight and adjust accordingly?
-- KH

@@husseinrima2571 Watch it in english dubbed.

24/7 focus, no matter what.

thats why 10+ years ago when I was practicing martial arts almost fulltime, i only bothered with ankle and wrist weights.

Just take flax seed oil for a couple of months and soak your entire body in hot water, then cold water, then hot water and you will probably be as good as new. I did the same thing and I am stronger than ever.
You probably overdid it. Should have start off with a reasonable amount of weight that your body could handle and just work your way up.
I've experimented with weights while running and found that putting weights above your knees and above your elbows (just under biceps) is the most comfortable, and actually improves my form.
your fucked up because you didnt let your body adjust before you stated training it needs time to adjust to the weight

Morale of the Story:
Weighted clothing is useful and smart aslong as its within training and giving your body rest time (Time dependant on your fitness level).Don't go trying to put on weight equal to your own body weight and begin training....No your not physically ready, you have to work your way up as you do in any type of training.A perfect example of a similar scenario is the military, you run in heavy boots aswell as a 45 pound ruck in a course of 2 to 3 months and over the course of time (Not just 2 weeks of slounging around like the study he mentioned) you will get stronger because your body is adapting to a new workload. In conclusion weighted clothing is useful for the physically fit looking to get even more fit now unless your a pt god (which your probably not if your watching this video, including myself just yet)you have to be able to understand your limits and what your body is capable of, otherwise you ineveitbly will hurt yourself.

It has 3 suns and blueish plant life and there is no night without bursting into flames. I don't think there is a realistic explanation.
You would have to have light of a wavelenght 490-570(green part of the spectrum) be refracted but which gas compositions and how thich of an atmosphere you need idk and considering the short wavelenght part of the spectrum is usually refracted its not likely.
Krypton (not the planet, the 36th element in the periodic table), maybe.
you would need to examine what it is about the nitrogen that causes our sky to appear blue.
This might even mean that there's more oxygen, so while plant life would be diminished, animal life would increase
Now, the plants.
+
trust me, he knows it wasnt normal. i THINK this video came about because of a tweet i sent, asking what material his clothes could be made out of, to weigh as much as they do..
I honestly question the comfort of wearing this t-shirt
shadowdragon: Thanks alot :D
Salz Stangl i question the comfort of most t shirts....
I agree with you Stephen, I was going to say the same thing. I would say it's at least 1/2 inch thick is some episodes.
When I was younger I tried Weighted training. Weights consisted of:
* Kevlar vest if substituting Kevlar for metal plates can simulate a weighted shirt. It's bulky but I have done this.
* In addition leg ankle weights (not very healthy for your ankles) and wrist weights.
* ADD to that a 50lb rucksack and you will feel the G. It was around 100 extra pounds.
Now should you do this? I don't recommended. I did this for a little over 5 years starting when I was around 13 and the side effects where that:
* While I was a lot stronger than I looked due to my bones and muscles becoming denser.
Otherwise you can hinder your bone growth or damage your spine.
damn, sorry dude
i was just about to say, if u do it when ur still growing, it will mess up your body. i myself have been done growing since 8th grade and im 20 years old now, so im thinking of giving weighted clothes a shot
That's horrible to hear. Why did your parents allow such an extreme thing? That seems like a really bad oversight.
I take a day or two off and slowly build up the weight. Seems to work well for me.
There you have it, a 60kg tungsten weighted shirt that is a plausible solution for Goku's training undergarment.

yup
I actually tried this for three weeks. If you're interested, here's how it went down...
I've been training for years, Boxing, Muay Thai and MMA. A couple years back, just before COVID, I got invited to fight in Strelka. I hadn't had a fight since my late twenties and I was one of the oldest fighters on the roster, so to get the edge over the younger competition, I thought I'd give it a try. I lived in (at home only) and trained with 2-2kg wrist weights on each forearm, the same on each leg and a 30kg vest strapped to my upper body.
At home:
Doing regular shit, like frying an egg was beyond frustrating, because all the gear would just get in the way.
During training:
Training was more frustrating than day to day life.
Do it! Do it now!
Is it wrong that I misread "heli-carrier" as "hair care" for just a second?
My best friend is a cross country runner with a full ride from his college and he uses altitude masks there’s got to be some benefits at that level right? Where he’s still running the same distance and uses one every day he just tries to do it to acclimate to less oxygen per breath.
Altitude masks have little to no benefit whatsoever. The person must also live in high altitude atmosphere in order to gain the benefits. The mask is, however, great at identifying tools in the gym.
I'm fairly sure he's done a Shield Helicarrier video already and concluded that any cities that it passed over would be having a very bad day.

Keep in mind that this was with training over those same few weeks. The vest wasn't the only variable in play.
3.7 40 yd dash is impossible for a human my guy. 5.7 - 4.7 is more realistic.

8figures8 Tell me who has ran a 3.7 in the 40 yd dash? WHO?!
My anecdotal account is of course no substitute for an actual scientific study, the only sensible way to validate or disprove it.
i workout in 15 kg of steel body armour, jog, run, fight, etc. going over 30kg depending on your size is definitely detrimental
Your experiences may vary. I'm sharing mine so people who want to try this won't do so in an unsafe way.
yes true, but weight training is definitely better if you are training to do high energy activities in weighted gear, like medieval reenactment as i do, rather than having that boost when you kit down, its to keep you well adjusted to the weight of your gear
As someone who's a huge dragonball fan, I really appreciated all the effort that clearly went into making this as accurate to the series as possible! Thank you so much for the awesome videos!

To a trained person with strengthened bones and ligaments, such a minor weight wouldn’t cause any strain if used carefully, but would make their kicks slower, just like in DBZ.
yea 250 pounds of weighted clothes
I shadow box with 2.5 lb each hand im 6 foot tall 185 lb used to lift a while back got back to it January currently I can curl 145 lb with barbell , front squat 240, bench around 250 (haven't been able to bench no spotter issues) lifts are just for perspective but you think I should shadowbox with 2.5lb wrist weights
very good point.
Maybe 1 lb
This is amazing! I really appreciate the way you correlated the training from a popular Japanese cartoon with real life data and research.

I want to put my 2 cents in:
So at one point, i was training for the ninja warrior competition, and to help me, my work let me wear some ankle and wrist weights.
Now the downsides:
Did u see an increase in muscle mass or leanness?
Goku wore those weighted clothes his entire life. Not just a few weeks.

When the light is mainly from your hair why not. Maybe thats why their hair always point upwards...
Gianni daCatanzaro even though they probably can't see through the aura they generate, they have a useful skill to counteract this weakness (wouldn't call Aura a weaknesses) is by sensing the opponents energy maybe that's why even super saiyan's can still fight even though there's an aura surrounding them
Thor praising Goku lol Its a trap I tell you!!

Goku is not 5 or ten times stronger compared to Captain America. He is few quadrillions times stronger than him.
Victor Fries “few”
He said 'at least"
Lmao, Cap America is about the lowest tier of "superheroes"
I think the goal/point of weighted clothes is that you slowly work up to the crazy high numbers like in dbz. Goku trained with Kami for 3 years using weighted clothes; I doubt he went straight from nothing to ~140kg. Same goes with the gravity training; it took time for Goku to work up to the 100g training (with a bag of senzu to go with it). So yeah, just putting on a ton of weighted clothes is dangerous and inefficient...the same way doing any exercise super crazy right off the bat is dangerous.
idk, he started it with Roshi and was using 20kg turtle shells from the start, then switched to 40kg in under a year
You right
hes also an alien from a race of super warriors. he can probably gain faster than normal. unlike krillin who is just human who as i understand also trained with roshi at the same time with less results.
Yamcha almost died doing the same training Goku did. I think that was Akira hinting that people should not be like Goku.
Do Namekians even have bones?
We ate smarter though
@@U.F.O that's a good ass question.
@@TaffieTheCapy I mean, they must have some sort of hard bone structure or they can't walk and stuff unless they're just made of really really dense muscle
Joshua Wood they probably do but the warrior clan namekians have enough muscle to control the noodle arms. That’s my head canon.
Goku and Kulilin used weighted turtle shells for their first training with Kame Sennin.
he means to calculate, the first calculable instance of it
I'm pretty sure they said that the first turtle shell they were wearing ws 20kg. And then when they were done with that training they shifted to 40kg. Those numbers were big already so they could only get huge with power creep.
redjakOfficial Thank you
@@PapaBearIsHere Nah, the breakdown of weight distribution was Dragonball as well during teen Goku's rematch with Tien after training with Kami for 3 years

140 kg 300 lbs. Also, try leveling up rather than straight away going for 140.
You could start with 10 pounds then upgrade
@@dastvan8002 I love that you say "most likely"
There goes your heart. Outlaw Star
The added gravity would compress your spine.

Krillen is a great character. If not for him, Goku would've never gone SuperSaiyan....
1) Goku is a Saiyen not a human.
2) goku likely built up to that level with all his training.
3) the benefits are "potentially " there if done right, and that is what is shown in the anime. Goku trained to fight with the weighted clothes over a few years. the presumption here is not a directly fair comparison

This guy just crushed my dreams with this video.
You shouldnt really add more than like 10% of your body weight for extended periods of times.
a patriotic american shouldn't have dreams of being like a japanese character, you should be ashamed

He's saying that it's more efficient to train normally or train with a small amount of weighs
Don't boxers throw punches holding weights?
He said that the advantages are small, not that the advantages have 0 value to absolutely everyone. Seems pretty clear his point is that weighted clothing won't make an appreciable difference in general fitness training. If you're training for competition in a physical event that is won or lost by tiny fractions of a second, then his point doesn't apply because you aren't training for general fitness.
I think I’m better off killing wierd ass demon monsters with a big ass sword and a mechanical arm

I'm extremely confused, at 5:00 he treated the results like they weren't much for the jumping but even increasing bye 5 centimeters in a month is incredible if you are a professional high jumper and notice that improvement consistently you would be able to jump an extra meter in just 20 months (i know this isn't realistic seeing improvement that consistant, but still)
Super Nerd Sean (Pee-ry) here with some show semantics and terrible consiquences of being a human doing Sayan training:
For Sayans, they have an exception to their anatomy that makes it so no human should EVER train like they do.
(probably)
Ya, if Goku were a human this sudden addition of weight would have torn every single limb from his body (if he remained floating), strength be damned when sudden unexpected weight drops at the rate of 10 times Earths gravity.
The zenkai boost only happens if they recover from a /near death/ injury. Just recovering from an injury does nothing.
