Hyaa! Thanks so much for watching! This was a fun one -- a bit of old and a bit of new. See you super nerds in Footnotes, and if you want more video game science and haven't seen it yet the first episode of *THE SCIENCE OF MORTAL KOMBAT* is now live! Check it out and let me know what you think. Saaa! -- kH
Just seen it the other day great! and reminds me why you don't pick fights with pros! I like my brain box as is and he did some remodeling... Can't wait too see the big baddies of MK 11.
Could Link's gauntlets just be creating a magnetic repulsion, and thus levitation, within the stone which makes it easier to lift?
Could it be that the different types of gauntlets Link aquires don't actually increase Link's strength, but the ability to create magnetic repulsion within certain stones is increased when switching from the silver gauntlets over to the golden ones?
Link can shoot a grappling hook, have it pull him large distances and be completely fine. That is super durability in levels of a superhero/human.
But that's just a theory.... A [Copyrighted Phrase]....
My man, please calculate how much weight a FULLY GEARED Link in Ocarina of Time is carrying, and how much endurance he would need to have to run with all of that unencumbered.
And just in general.. how does it make sense he can be hauling all of that crap around "effortlessly," but swinging the Megaton Hammer by itself looks like he's straining a little bit? I know weight is harder to move the further away it is from your core, but that's a big difference, and it kind of has a short haft. Do you think the Megaton Hammer actually weighs a megatonne, or maybe just a megagram? xD
How strong is the "FUS RO DAH" shout in skyrim?
In BotW, Link can parry a Lynel charging at full speed, with just a shield, while also applying enough force to send it backwards as well.
I went looking for this comment. Pleased to find you!
And it is said of the less heavy Lynel crusher a normal human can't carry it...
He can also do that to a huge lava mountain (igneo talus titan)
If we get botw link can fly at Mach 5 and move roll his body to a speed that he can trespass solid matter
Marcos Alexandre de Medeiros Pimentel da Silva sorry i just had to imagine all the other links watching wild link while he prepares a glitch, does some weird chargeshieldbullettimewhatever stuff suddenly deforms and bursts away at the speed of sound. And the other ones are just like: what? What is wrong with you?
It takes a strong Link to throw a pillar over his head but an even stronger one to resist tormenting roosters in every age.
And so far, no Link has been that strong...
Love the show, man. I would like to see something about Ben10 and the Omnitrix according to our recent genetics advance.

Stopping a Lynel at full speed requires a huge amount of strength, just calculate speed and weight of those things and man, you'll be surprised. And he does it with his non dominant hand.
@@fuchigole A golden lynel charging is probably enough to destroy a building.
You guys think that's impressive? He can Parry explosions. Fucking, explosives, and attack many times a second as everything around him looks slow motion. Base link is strong as all hell yes, and OOT Link is stronger with items. But these two in theory would pale in comparison to the Link from A Link to the Past. Because it's in the downfall timeline that Ganon is stronger then OOT Link, and has the entirety of the Triforce. Therefore we can make a deduction that at the end of the game. A link to the Past Link will be INCREDIBLY strong
If he's hitting with that much force it would explain why weapons break so quickly in Breath of the Wild.
True
lol yea
Or possibly the structure of matter is different then here maby weaker or stronger also possible physics operates different in links world. Or wep. just low quality steel in early sword crafting no matter how nice it looked breaks were more common because if this.
@@agentmtg890 i think physics is very similar to our, just look how object like rocks fall and arrows fly

There was also the bit in Twilight Princess where Link is repeatedly able to stop and push around Gorons that are rolling straight at him with no strength-enhancing equipment apart from a pair of metal shoes.
I mean shit Twilight princess link can push back user of the triforce of power ganondorf bro is fucking nutty
Don't forget he can walk with those metal boots, when they are being magnetized enough to have him upside down. He also swings a metal ball and chain with no reprocussions
@@pug8714 And depending how we look at game mechanics, the balls impact is treated as a bomb explosion so he throws that thing with some serious force. And of course we can consider that most of this stuff is without any enhanced powers. Imagine having link with permanent access to the fierce deity mask.
TP Link is YOLKED bro was manhandling charging rams like nothing
And technically those boots aren't strength enhancing there actually heavy enough to root him in place when the equivalent of a living boulder charges at him.

@@Razgard Oh, he can in one game
If Link hits the front of ganon with the master sword and ganon takes it like nothing in Ocarina of Time, doesn't that make Ganon have some of the highest defense of any character ever?
Triforce of strength y'know
I mean, yeah... he is the Demon King, you should expect supernatural levels of strength.
To say nothing of the average chicken.
(Note, read this like a scared scientist)
Wait! Link has the triforce of courage and not power. Yet the triforce picks the person who fits it best. Which means Ganon is more powerful then link who is able to throw whales. Are we positive this isn’t a story of two gods of good and evil where one try’s to take over/ distort the land while the other is awaken in the form of the hero where there duel could cause the distraction of the world if it goes out of hand!!
Cuz if so that would be an awesome story.
@@joshatronawsome7412 the triforce deals with the more existential and magical concepts of power. That's why Ganon, in his lust for control and power, was chosen for his piece.
There's also his shield parry in Breath of the Wild. It's harder to estimate, but he can stop a charging lynel, and even knock it back a bit, in what appears to be no more than 1/30 of a second of contact. Even more impressively, he manages to do this without moving back himself, which means he's somehow pushing on the ground just as hard as he is on the lynel.
Y'all missing the fact he can parry ACTUAL FUCKING LASERS
If we're trying to calculate forces for real here, then the ground would usually not be able to take that amount of force concentrated into the small area beneath Link's feet. Maybe solid stone could, but even that might at least get chipped or crack under the force.
I don't think he's strong at all, I think he's got some kind of magic that makes these things happen for him. It takes effort for him to benefit from this magic, but he clearly isn't built for this kind of strength, and his surroundings (like the ground in this instance) always act as if he's just a scrawny lad walking along normally when he performs these feats
@@seanmadson8524 magic or not it's still part of his strength if you think about it. I mean Hulk despite the whole gamma ray explanation is... basically magic, especially concidering he gets his real power from hell
@@davidprice8449 It is a purely semantic difference, I admit, but it is not what I would call "his" strength, just the strength of his magic.
The Hulk has muscles that are physically strong due to superscience, so he is almost the opposite of Link. A better comparison would be the superhero that is a boy that speaks a magic word to basically transform into a magical version of Superman (his name is Shazam, or something like that). This superhero does get big muscles too, but his strength vastly exceeds the limits of someone with his musculature due to magical power that he wields in that form
@@seanmadson8524 But isn't that the case for hulk as well? Yeah he is unnaturally muscular but he has feats that wouldn't be possible even with this amount of muscle.

Me: Oh, is it something from one of the original NES games?
"...Ocarina of Time"
Me: What?! ...Oh. I'm old.
damit
I thought about the NES games too
Me too
I thought he was going to talk about a link to the past.
Ocarina of Time came out before I was born
I'm in college now :D
Hey listen!!!
Here is a reference to the strength of link without the gauntlets. He is able to move stone cubes in the Forest temple which seem to be a little above 2 times his height so if link is 1.7m lets say the cube is 3.5m, stone have density of 2691kg-m³ and friction coefficient of 0.4. With this information we can figure it that:
Length of cube = 3.5 m
Density of cube = 2691 kg/m³
Volume of cube = 42.875 m³
W=V*D = 2691 * 42.875 =115,377kg
Watch out!! now we are going to work in an axis ←fr with →F and ↑W with ↓mg.We calculate the mass
W = mg = 115,377 * 9.81 = 1,131,845 N
the coefficient of friction can be calculated
fr = µW = 0.4 * 1,131,844 = 452,738 N
Then we calculate the Force require to move the object
F = W - fr = 1,131,845 - 452,738 = 679,107 N
That translates around a little more than 69 tons of force normal link must overcome to move those giant stone cubes over several dungeons. He is pretty buff for a fairy boy.
You've got my vote for "Super Nerd" 👍
Nope you need the bracelet to move blocks it is also a strength upgrade link can't even pull up grass with out them so he is a weak little boy who gets magic to become stronger
Nice
That's still a pretty strong and sexy value.
I'm talking about adult Link in ocarina of time. In the forest temple (and in the water temple too i think) he has to move stone cubes twice his size and he doesn't need any magic bracelet or gauntlet. In that game the bracelet is for picking bomb flowers and stone cubes were the gauntlet is needed are bigger.
This is the REAL reason Link wields the Master Sword-not because it’s imbued with cosmic evil-smiting magic, but because it’s the only sword in Hyrule sturdy enough to not shatter in his beefy muscular hand.
Even then it needs a break now and then, damn Link is no joke strong af.
To be honest, Link is even scarier because dude also has to be hella smart to solve all the riddles of Hyrule. So he’s scary strong, extremely smart and extremely creative. Small elf looking guy basically has most superheroes beat by a huge margin xD
He's also the best swordsman of Hyrule and has magic abilities in most games. Demise fought Hylia to a stand still. Link beat Demise. Hylia is a goddess. So Link is canonically more powerful than a god.
He also has the guts to do anything, no matter how audacious, dangerous, or suicidal.
He does hold 1/3 of the power that was used to create the world, a mask that turns him into a deity, and a cape that makes him invincible for a short time to name a few.
If link is that strong than how strong are the chickens that annihilate him in seconds when provoked
Chickens are just way Overpowered, that's why you don't see them as playable charakters ;-P
unknown person if they were they would do 50 damage per hit
That's not a feat of strength. Link is strong but its established that hes kinda squishy. Plus he's deal with a flock... or would swarm be more appropriate...
They're the children of a Lovecraftian God.
They were sent by Hylia to make sure I'm not evil.
No major arguments this week but I just have to point out that basalt is probably a better assumption for a hexagonal prism of dark rock than granite. Basalt is naturally darker in color than granite and it also naturally occurs in columns with a hexagonal cross section. It’s called, appropriately, columnar basalt. It matches that throwing stone quite accurately. The only difference for your calculations would be that the average density of basalt is 3g/cm^3 vs the 2.75g/cm^3 for granite. So, it would make Link look even stronger. I’m married to a geologist so I can’t let this go.
Married to a geologist huh? I can imagine its a bit of a rocky relationship.

I had a little fan theory that you just confirmed. In Breathe of the Wild, the weapons keep breaking because they are not made of tinfoil, but because Link is so strong, everything in his hands shatters. Quite literally.
But this is just a theory, a fan theory! Because science!
Yup
That... actually makes sense. Nobody would be able to forge a weapon for someone like that. It's like the Masamune in FFVII.
I had the same theory!
I had a similar thought. After all, you never see a monster’s weapon break while striking Link, but Link will break it taking down a monster.
@1rotzy
Then explain this to me, Mr. So called fan theorist! What about the Master Sword? Sure it won't break because of magic, but phshh, who uses magic in fantasy sci-fi theory mumbo jumbo?! Why does it run out of power instead of breaking?

So when I told my son Nate (10) you were doing Link’s strength, he got super excited and wanted to do an experiment for it.
In Skyward sword and Breath of the Wild, he compared the height of link to the tower in Skyloft and the great plateau. Counted the lengths of Link’s height it took to climb up (12.4 and 38.5), times Link’s height (170 cm) and timed jump after jump off the tower for how long it took to fall. With distance fallen (21.08 m and 65.45 m) and average time (1.49s and 1.98s), I helped him with the math and came up with acceleration of 9.495 m/s/s for Skyward sword and 16.737 m/s/s for BotW.
Compared to Earth’s gravity of 9.8 m/s/s Skyward Sword has 0.97G and BotW has 1.71G.
So he wants to know, would the higher gravity make BotW Link stronger than Skyward Sword Link? Or would the lower gravity in Skyward sword make Link’s feats of strength easier to accomplish? (Such as being so skinny but able to lift heavy looking doors in the Skyward Sword temples)
He also had an episode idea, but I’m not sure if it’s broad enough for an episode.
“How big would the paraglider need to be to actually work?”
And yes, I could answer the question. But I think he would love shout-out from KH.
As the gravitational acceleration is larger in BotW, the force required to lift something off the ground (and thus also the initial speed required to make a projectile follow a certain trajectory) is also larger. That means that the same actions in BotW indeed require more strength, and thus, Link's capabilities will be less in BotW, or he is actually stronger in BotW.
Great experiment, I bet you two had a lot of fun.
That depends. If he was born with these amounts of Gs and his muscles are as good there as ours are on earth then not. But if he was used to 1G then the higher gravitational pull would make it harder and the lower one easier to do what he does.

The only foe he cannot defeat. And a swarm of them will take link down...
If Link is this strong.... Why does he use such small weapons.
Screw throwing the pillar away, carry it around and drop it on people. Insta-win.
He has used a megaton hammer before, which weighs.. well... a literal ton. But imagine him lifting two Main Battle tanks, one in each arm, and throwing them away. That's what his strength level is.
well...on hyrule warriors he actually pulls out the pillar and smashes enemies with it while using the golden gauntles wich also have the ball and chain...just saying
Blaire Shadowpaw with super strength you can swing a smaller weapon even faster than normal, and velocity plays a bigger role in kinetic energy than weight does. So actually a smaller weapon, at least when edged weapons are concerned, are always better unless your goal isn’t to slice but to simply cleave, in which case he’d be better off with an axe
@@Gay_Priest Many of Link's enemies, especially the bosses, are armored in some way. A large axe (something like stormbreaker size, too big for a normal human but still somewhat lightweight for Link) would be a better choice as a weapon.
Or he could just use his fists with his strength.
Blaire Shadowpaw if he’s this strong, I think we can say that he should be fast as well. Otherwise it would be pretty weird if his arms were so strong while legs are so weak. And since his legs would be stronger than his arms, he would be able to move pretty fast. So if carried a small sword, he should be able to kill all enemies in an instant.
I believe that special mention should also go to Link's superb durability. For example, in Ocarina of Time, Link is tough enough to withstand getting sliced apart by Ganon's massive sword strikes, which could break apart massive piles of stone debris (let alone withstand the force of a stone-pillar-shattering swing from an Iron Knuckle's massive axe). Also, he can survive falling from great heights and bomb explosions with barely a scratch, and if he were to fall into a bottomless pit or pool of lava, or get crushed by a falling ceiling, he would somehow be warped back to the start of whatever room he was in with barely a scratch.
Well.. I guess this explains why the weapons in Breath of the Wild shatter like glass as soon as Link swings them a time or two. Although I'm incredibly curious of how much the gauntlet increases his strength.
I just started playing this game and I love it but I hate how fucking easy those weapons break LOL
Benjamen Sherman yea I hated it too but then got use to it Atleast it makes us use other stuff instead of maining one weapon
@@linkvangus After a while, you _actively_ start breaking weapons because you have too many of them and they don't break fast enough.
Well, I personally have the headcanon that BotW's Link has (a fraction of) the power that the Triforce of Wisdom and the Triforce of Power carry as well.
And since he doesn't know this, he puts too much power into each swing, causing catastrophic structural integrity failure on his weapons.
The gauntlets are most likely magical
I think you're also missing out on a non-strength superpower that link has, that could be used to significantly higher effect. Throughout the legend of zelda games he picks up currency in the form of rupees, each of which are valued differently depending on colour. Given his ability to store many hundreds of rupees, each of which appears to be several inches tall, and his seeming ability to convert any and all rupees into any other as required, this could imply an ability to perform mass-energy conversion, whereby he stores all these large bulky gems as a form of compressed energy, and re-constitutes it at whatever denomination he wishes at any time when he decides to spend them.
If this was the case, he could defeat enemies by simply doing the same thing that he does with rupees, converting them into nothing but energy for him to manipulate as he pleases. He could quite literally turn his foes into cash and finally retire to a beach somewhere.
Isnt it pretty much confirmed that he simply have magical pockets were he stores Everything? Given the weigthed boots he gets in some games as well as the Heavy ball on a chain in twilight princess etc all magically dissapear into the pockets. Same goes for bombs and Everything
@@eliasnilsson6604 not sure about magic pockets, although even if that was how he was achieving his mythical storage, that wouldn't explain how he's able to swap the value of his rupees for smaller / larger denominations when required.
Magic pockets would also be an incredible weapon since it seems he would have the ability to Teleport things into/out of them just by touch. Imagine fighting him, only to find yourself trapped in an endless void where he could leave you to starve. You might even end up in the background of a because science shoot.
Either matter energy conversion or he just gets change back, like with any curency. About the size of that thing: doesn't any good video game charcter have a four dimensional pocket called inventory?
I always thought that the ability to compress/split rupees into any denomination was a property of the rupee itself. It explains why they are used as currency when they can be found in low quantities almost anywhere, because they're super convenient and getting them still requires enough time and effort to stop them being worthless
Gg lmao
Are we just going to forget that Link redirected a guardian's laser with a pot lid when he was only but a child?
Well, we know he is stronger than Darth Vader...he has three times the force.
don't wooosh me on this, but link only has the force of courage aanndd maybe the force of wisdom if zelda counts, but im stretching it. nice joke and may the force be with you
Except for every game that he gets to the end and gets the triforce on like Skyward Sword and A Link Between Worlds. Even Wind Waker might count, though he never uses it.
I see what you did there lol
He doesn't always appear that way through his gameplay, but even without powers and magic items, Lore accurate Link could basically get into a 1-v-3 against Achilles, Beowulf, and Hercules and sneeze on them and win.
Link is pretty much a Kratos level threat.
This is the Hero of Time we're talking about, he's a dainty little fairy boy who just kinda vibes in a forest for 10 years, think of the capabilities of the Hero of Twilight, the guy who worked on a farm his whole life (he's 17 in canon)
Wait, a LoZ related episode sponsored by Mortal Kombat...?
Link confirmed for MK11 Switch?
I'd rather see Samus in it than link. There's a lot of stuff they can do with her, especially dialog with the cyborgs, any of the special forces, heck you can even say she's there after bounty hunting alien or predator.

Ganon has the Triforce of power and is supposedly stronger then Link so imagine how strong that Bastard is.
@sadi muntakim I beg to differ. They are equal in strength in each aspect yes but the triforce of courage grants like courage and magical protection. Link isn't good with magic casting so can't use it ffor much else. The Triforce of power has the most abilies and benefits. It far outweighs the other pieces in terms of usefulness. Links don't enhance his body. The Triforce of power does "This power is absolute, making the recipient of Din's blessing a god-like entity, vastly more powerful than any mortal, affording its wielder invulnerability, vast strength and an unlimited source of mystical power."
It's argued Link only wins because the aid of Zelda and the Master Sword. I was talking physical prowess anyway.
Actually Ganondorf had the triforce of power and Link still won in 2 out of 3 timelines
In Twilight Princess Link could toss Gorons like they're nothing. Sure he needed the Iron Boots but that was only to keep him grounded; he could lift and toss Gorons with his upper body strength alone.

Because Video Game logic, not IRL.
That sounds like a really good web comic.
Depends on what the ground is made of. considering this "dirt" somehow cannot be damaged in the slightest by any of our attacks, the strongest being in Zelda unvierse might be the trees that manage to pierce this superdense earth with their roots.
Nope. You are correct that there COULD be a sinking effect, but that would mean that he is lifting the whole weight. The reason why there isn't, is because he is absorbing the weight, which is proof of his ultimate feat of strength. Similarly, when Superman's strength was being tested by a press, it was determined that he was absorbing the force. Any impressions left in the ground would mean that he isn't absorbing all of the weight, in other words, not lifting the full amount. So, since there isn't any sinking effect, it is determined that he is absorbing all of the force.
@@trinityfish2806 What do you mean by absorbing the force? I could understand in Superman case (he can fly). But not in Link's. You can't just... absorb weight. It's like saying that one would be lifting less weight by lifting a kid carrying backpack than by lifting kid AND a backpack.
I love everything Kyle Hill does. I miss him doing these shows, but I'm glad he's happier now.
Ya, I miss these too. But he was basically carrying the company by himself.
Kyle, I am THRILLED you did this. However, I think that the pillar is not black granite but rather black marble (comparing the look of the texture between them).
This makes the pillar even heavier than calculated. A Marble pillar at the size offered (just shy of 28 meters) means the pillar would weigh in at a hefty 40,893.8888 (etc etc) so let's call it 40,894Kgs. Rather than the 3,656.4636Kgs that granite would weigh at the same dimensions. This would mean that Link would have to put out an insane amount MORE power to chuck the prism.
I have to wonder how Castle Town ruins even stand after the quake that would be created by the impact of the thrown pillar landing... buh bye Temple of Time. (And wouldn't that cause Death Mountain to erupt again?)
Woah.
Lrbearclaw Yes thank you! I always thought it was marble as well.
*"I have to wonder how Castle Town ruins even stand after the quake that would be created by the impact of the thrown pillar landing... buh bye Temple of Time."*
Magic. *(shrug)* Of course, that might actually be the answer, as Ganon didn't seem able to actually defile the temple at any point.
@@KalibreSteelblast I never liked the handwavium of "because magic". That's always a lazy writing tactic. Not to mention we see the ToT shake when Ganon captures Zelda. So I would argue that if physics were used, yeah at very least the wrecked buildings would be leveled by the shaking of the Fairy Fountain's pillar being thrown. (Never mind how FUBARed Ganon's Castle would be with the one inside being thrown inside a floating island over a pit of magma.)
Hey Kyle,
Instead of adding to the episode or coming up with a correction or what have you, I'd like to take a moment to say thanks for these shows.
I'm 31 and I work full time as a watchmaker. I watch your shows on lunch break and comment frequently not because I want the attention, but because your show makes me think, and reminds me of my childhood.
Ocarina of Time was my first dip into an open world, RPG type game, and I fell in love with it. When I saw you were doing this episode next I was transported instantly back to the days I would spend playing in gradeschool.
So often, people get wrapped up in the day to day grind and are sucked away from the things we enjoy. I personally wish I had more time for gaming, but i have a family, so gaming falls to the wayside. So when I can watch a video on something from my childhood that brought me so much joy, I am energized and thought provoked to the point where i feel i must participate in some small way.
Thank you Kyle, you and your team are awesome.

Remember that Link gets the Goron Bracelet pretty early on in OoT, which has magical strength-giving abilities. I think it would have been more reliable to measure how young Link pushes a massive stone block in the Deku Tree to approximate his strength. I'm guessing it's 1x1x1 meters of stone, likely granite. This makes the block Link pushes weigh just over 2,750 kilograms, which is still a lot to push about 3 1/2 meters, especially with two rough surfaces and a child's strength.
Link must also have super human durability as well to go with his super strength, and it's shared to varying degrees among his many reincarnations and iterations.
Many Links can fall from great heights and not break break their legs from falls that should be leaving them crippled.
after gaining enough hearts, BotW Link eventually becomes able to survive a direct strike from lightning. which easily contains more than enough volts to fry a person.
With the twilight princess link, the amount of forces his hook shots should theoretically unleash on his arms and bones should be dislocating his limbs, and breaking his bones. however even these forces pale in comparison to the time he got shot out of a cannon that launches him to a sky island above the clouds. considering the launch is pretty much instantaneous from a stationary position, the amount of G-force his body should be experiencing would incapacitate any normal humans, yet link is still fine after splatting on the surface of a flying island.
while there's many more examples among the games, but listing them would probs just go on and on.
Honestly lightning doesnt have that much of a kill percentage.
Elyrx someone watched Matt Pat and GameTheory I see
Well if you assume Three Hearts is average humans durability, as that is what he has before he goes off to become a hero in most games, then Link has the capability to end most adventures with 20 hearts, which is more than Six times, almost Seven times, more durable than a normal person. And that's not counting magic Tunics or Great Fairy enchantments that reduce damage.
Ultra instinct Link confirmed
You can tell he grew up with Ocarina. A true man of culture
Kyle you didn't even mention things like the iron boots, Link can lift those to walk (even underwater), those boots allow Link to not be knocked back by the Gorons (Rolling down a hill or wrestling) in Twilight Princess and he doesn't even have the silver or gold gauntlets to aid him. Keep in mind the Gorons are a race of literal rock people, though it isn't as impressive as lifting the pillars that Ganon/Ganondorf placed over certain areas in Hyrule, it is using his own strength. Plus I would imagine going down hill some of those Gorons would be going pretty fast.
Great episode was fun to see the references to the first Zelda game I played and the work you put in getting all the calculations. Keep it up Kyle.
Edit: Hoping to see more dinosaur/prehistoric videos on your channel those are very enjoyable- especially when we can correct you >:)
I think that link's most impressive feat of strength is stopping a linel dead in its tracks with a single parry while its at max speed. It looks like its about the size of a rhino that must take immense amounts of force
Edit: the best thing about this is that he does this feat without any assistance and can do it with a literal pot lid
Yes, and he does this with just ONE ARM. AND he doesn’t even get pushed back or flinch.
Link- "i'm one of the strongest game characters"
Steve-"hold my potion"
Kirby: Which one of you lightweights ate my sandwich!
The rupees in Zelda are not little coins that are light weight. Them things are large heavy stones, and since Link can hold up to 999,999 of them he ain't no pushover. Gold may be heavy, but Steve is limited to far less than 2,000 something, meaning link is probably far stronger.

Kyle, if Link was lifting the pillar in Ocarina of Time, wouldn't the granite slab crumble? I dont know what the tensile strength of granite is, but I know that it can easily fracture under less than 18,000,000N of force.
No, actually, because the force was applied in only one direction and the pillar was not pressing into anything in that direction. So the pillar would not crumble because the thing that uses less energy would be to move and displace the air around it. Absolutely should have fractured when it hit the ground though.
His feet would sink into the earth faster than he could lift it. It would still be impossible for him to lift that weight, because the ground beneath him would not be strong enough to hold his legs + the boulder up.
@@visoth7791 Oh, I see now. The Newton's Laws.
Lifting it from the bottom like that the compressive strength would be the relevant factor since the weight of the granite pushing down on itself is being supported by an upwards force pressing up on the granite from bellow. If he lifted it up from the top so that the weight of the granite was effectively causing the unsupported bottom part to pull away from the top part that was being supported by link that would be tensile strength. Still yeah given that a human hand has an area on the order of 0.015 square meters and he appears to be using both of them then the force of 18000000 newtons Kyle suggests would be being delivered over an area of 0.03 square meters at most that corresponds to a pressure of 600 MPa like most natural materials the compressive strength of granite is variable but apparently the average is in the region of 130 MPa or so though samples with compressive strengths exceeding 200 MPa are not unheard of but still well bellow 600 Mpa.
Note that if it was being lifted from the top it would be even worse as like most rocks granite is pretty good in compression but comparatively far weaker in tensile strength being in the single digit megapascal range trying to lift it from the top would easily sheer it, would probably just split in two right where you were gripping it. Though this also does help to make for a more dramatic catastrophic failure as a column begins to fail compressively as cracks begin it causes the column to try to expand outwards something it is far less capable of resisting so it very quickly progresses from the initial cracking to the entire column splintering and shattering outwards.
@@visoth7791 Who knows? The ground in every Zelda game is completely immune to bomb blasts, so it might be far sturdier than real life ground.
It’s said in Botw that Link was so skilled that he managed to deflect a guardian laser with a potting lid! He’s strong as hell!

Wow! I really didn't expect Link to be this strong. I thought most of his strength came from the usage of the magical artifacts, but he's sure a force to be reckoned with. What made me feel the most powerful in the Zelda series was playing with Fierce Deity mask. That was just too awesome not to do against Majora.
Link throwing Ganon like Mario throws Bowser in Super Mario 64 is a funny idea.
Plus, the castle was surrounded by some serious pit.
ANOTHER FULL EPISODE maybe -- kH
Well mario is super strong in his own right. Throwing a giant turtle dragon like a cannon ball in the olympics, breaking bricks with his fists, and jumping like ten times his own height. Not bad for a chubby Italian plumber.
I like the fact that the Zelda games have an in-game explanation why you can retry a level after dying(because videogame doesn't count.) The Triforce of Courage literally brings Link back in time after being defeated ala Edge of Tommorrow to try again until he wins. Very few games do that and I thought it was neat.
Philip Collier So, not only super strength but A Weird sense of immortality, too?
Prince of Persia also provided an ingame explanation as to why he can retry in one of the games. The Sands of Time kept bringing him back.
Wouldn't that only work for the few iterations of Link that are bearers of the Triforce of Courage? Pretty sure most of them are not, for most or all of the game.
Basically Determination before it was cool
@@OriginalPiMan All links are reincarnations of a Link who at one point possessed the complete Triforce so that theory could work for every Link except skyward sword. For that Link the only idea I have is wibbly wobbly timey wimey god stuff
And remember that OoT Link isn't even the "stronger" one, it is the one from A Link to the Past, in feats, variety of items, abilities, etc.
Well he's the second strongest (or first, depending on the person) and the Hero Of Legend doesn't outclass him by much.
Also, this is about physical strength so you talking about items and abilities is a little weird unless you're just fanboying over HoL.
Links strongest superpower, the ability to roll everywhere, riding boats or change great altitudes quickly and frequently without throwing up. I myself can barely swing on a swing set....
It did not surprise me that he was capable of sumo wrestling with Gorons- though it does make sense that he'd still need the boots to keep him in place.

This is fine :)))
Seeing that link was only able to lift the pillar up after he got the gauntlet. Wouldn't it be the gauntlet giving him the strength? It would be equivalent to Tony Stark having a suit of armor like the Hulkbuster. But instead of Technology it's magic. 💪
Yeah, but the first part (BOTW) is only his base strength
He brought that up
Did you watch the end?
Maybe Link was already strong enough and he just needed the gauntlet to get a good enough grip?
I've seen theories that the gauntlets dont so much give him strength but brace his arms with magic so his bones dont snap when he tries to lift basically a tower of solid granite
💎and that’s not all! In BOTW, Link can parry/reflect any attack with ONE ARM, that includes guardian blasts, strikes from all the blights and calamity ganon, and even stop a charging Lynel dead in its tracks and send it reeling back. He can do all this with ONE ARM without a sweat💎
Didnt Link canonically reflect a guardian laser with a pot lid or something?

Yep. And that was when he was a kid.
Fans think that Link's champion ability might also be to slow time in short bursts. Link spoke to Daruk and told him that when he focuses that "time seems to slow down". And the fact that he took out an entire horde of monsters by himself *super* quickly.
BotW Link is freakin' ridiculous, dude.
@@blksmagma Mipha mentioned that Link at 4 years old was kicking the asses of trained knights, this is true; but the incident you're referring to occurred while Zelda was doing research on Guardians, which caused the king to assign him as Zelda's protector. He wasn't exactly a kid, then- but it's still damn impressive.
I think in a age of calamity cutscene, link -without any power amping gauntlet- just parries a big ass chunk of castle rock or something that'd been falling from a great height, casually.
personally I believe that the Link from Twilight Princess is stronger. I say this because he can catch and throw a Goron that is rolling at him with only the really heave Iron Boots augmenting him and those boots are just making him harder to send flying through the air. that same Goron will send Link quite the impressive distance without the Iron Boots and that's just a normal Goron, in the Goron Mines the mini-boss is a Goron wearing heavy armor and Link catches him and throws him off the platform the fight takes place on several times. then there is the Ball and Chain from the Snowpeak Ruins which Link can carry in his hands. the Ball and Chain slows him down a lot but he can spin it over his head and throw it to hit enemies with the heave ball on the end of the chain then just pull it back to him with barely any effort. Twilight Princess Link can do that all on his own, Ocarina Of Time Link needs special gauntlets to perform his feats of strength, all Twilight Princess Link needs to catch and throw a Goron in some Iron Boots to increase his weight so he is harder to move.
But like Kyle said; those are still parts of OOT Link's arsenal, so wearing the Golden Gauntlets he would still be able to pick up TP Link and toss him into the next Kingdom.
@@_Pikahiiri_ that may be however OOT Link Needs the Golden Gauntlets which augment his strength to do so, TP Link throws Gorons without those Gauntlets so if it was an RPG TP Link would have a higher base strength stat.
@@alexkuhn5188 You'll probably want to figure out OOT's base Strength by the largest thing he can heave without the Golden Gauntlets (he doesn't use the Goron Bracelet as an adult) to figure out a rough multiplication of Strength that the Golden Gauntlets give to figure out how boosted either of them get. At the very least, TP Link can chuck a moving Goron. I don't think OOT Link can lift but a large crate/rock.
@@alexkuhn5188 Yeah, but Link, any Link, has always been defined by his items. TP Link may be stronger than OoT Link without any items, but they both have items... Just that TP Link doesn't have any strength enhancers.
I agree that his base strength would be higher. I'm simply going by Kyle's reasoning that without his suit, Tony Stark isn't stronger than your average man.
This is why it doesn't let you fight without a weapon. Link could just punch a Lynel and it would explode.
On a side note, how much force is behind Link's Shield Parry in BOTW, for him to be able to fully deflect Guardian Beams and charging Lynels?

On the Cloud vs Link debate, people often forget FFVII is a turn based RPG. Link can move freely in real time, making him much more of a threat. Cloud has to wait for his turn meter to fill before making a move
that's not how it works. That's just game mechanics.
@@galarstar052 so what if it is? To my knowledge there has never been a turn based Zelda game, and since we are comparing video game characters on their skills and abilities, I think it's a fair point.
@@manfromnantucket9544 it's game mechanics. Cloud isn't literally just sitting there waiting for his turn, in the same way link doesn't literally have a menu he can look through for his items. When you put game characters against each other you judge it based on their literal feats. In cutscenes Cloud doesn't wait for his turn.
Imagine, Mario for the most part is 2d. But he isn't a flatlander, because he has 3d games. He also has a series of RPG's but that doesn't mean he's also waiting for his turn.
It's sort of intresting to think about the fact that due to Newtons third law of motion, Link would actually just tore his arm off trying to lift something like a giant granite pillar.
Since that's roughly 10kN for a human at least. Of course the specifics of how it's applied changes the value.
But even more, when he does lift the pillar, he is exerting an equivilant force on his feet into the ground.
Which means that with force of 18million N on two feet with an area of around 230cm^2 per foot, he's excerting 391.000.000Pa which is the sort of force exerted by a ".300 Weatherby Magnum" at point blank range. Which could easily shatter any and every bone in his body.
Unfortunetly I couldn't manage to find how far he would sink into the ground with that pressure, but judging by the obsurd values, I don't think it's necessary for knowing that he would be all kinds of messed up upon lifting the pillar.
Btw love your show Kyle
I was thinking the same. He would imbed himself into the ground and that dissipated energy would mean that the pillar would not travel as far or high. The structural integrity of the pillar would likely be highly stressed due to the extreme acceleration.
And if he has this level of strength, he should be able to jump extraordinary distances, far longer than we see him do so in the video games.
I was six when Ocarina of Time came out... HAS IT BEEN 20 YEARS ALREADY?!
If you're 26, then I'd say "yes".
21 years when this video was released
It came out a year before I was born, so yeah, it's been a little over 21 years
boomer
So Link IS stronger than Cloud huh? Good to know they got it right.
Same thing I was thinking
To be fair, Cloud from advent children, who is stated to be not nearly as strong as in his prime, putting out an attack against someone that he wasn't putting his full effort against, was able to generate a force of greater than 1600, which is pretty close to the same ball park. The difference though, is that Cloud's feat is an actual combat feat, where as Link's feat is done against an inanimate object, and again, Cloud let himself get lazy during the time of peace, so he isn't anywhere near his peak.
they didnt do too much research back when link vs cloud happened. watch Sephiroth vs Vergil, and compare how absurdly more powerful the feats being presented are in that fight compared to the ones back in Link vs Cloud. Screwattack literaly put sephiroth as a solar system buster.
while it doesn't make much sense story wise, one of the official info books on FF7 confirms Sephiroth's supernova attack isnt an illusion, but an attack the teleports the victims to an alternate dimension where the supernova really happens. which means, as ridiculous as it sounds, Cloud tanked an actual sun exploding in his face.
Not even close watch this video: ruclips.net/video/tpujHUkNnco/видео.html
Not in combat link is not. Those gauntlets only add to lifting. Link not even bullet level in combat speed and no holding your sword up having lighting hit it does not count for combat speed or a deflection.
Then while Nate was measuring this, my other son, Felix (8) chimes in with… “If he was falling that fast and opened his paraglider his arms should pop off and fly away like a Lizalfos arm boomerang.”
Posted this separate from his brother’s so each could have a chance to have their comments come up in Footnotes.
Wow! Smart kids!
Perhaps not with normal terminal velocity. Folks open parachutes from terminal velocity all the time, and don't have injuries to the level that arms would pop out from if localized to the arms. A paraglider would likely only have a portion of the stopping power a parachute would have. So, likely more to the level of torn ligaments, and of course, letting go of the glider. Link has some super strength by default though, and the durability to use it constantly (liftable 'normal' rocks wouldn't be light or easy to throw) - so it isn't surprising he holds on without noticeable injury.
Man, you raised smart kids. :)

Link can lift up a lynel sword
I dont think that a normal human should not be able to lift a lynel sword
And he can lift up a giant block of ice

Magic Squid he also lifts up their huge clubs
But wouldn't that amount of force applied over a surface area as small as his hands just split (or at least crack) the granite when he tried to throw it?
Especially over the period of time it takes him to accelerate the pillar from 0 m/s to ...whatever speed it hits before it leaves his hands and begins to decelerate?
I was thinking the same thing before I read this. I imagine it would be determined by it's hardness that's not the whole story though some hard things are quite fragile. Hit a diamond with a hammer it'll shatter/ break. Tungsten is the same my wedding ring was made from it I dropped it, it landed wrong and shattered 😕. I got a new one... Thank God for insurance lol.

Caveat, most super heroes aren't above building level.
Kind of hard to right a compelling story of violent conflict when someone can toss smaller moons on the regular, which is why Link needs to _unlock items_ to use that strength and can only use those items under specific PUZZLE SOLVING situations.
He fights with clever uses of tools and a magic sword, not with the ability to throw rocks bigger than he is.
Not to mention that link can stop a charging lynel just by shield bashing it and he also defeated single-handedly a bunch of enemies in one of the memories including some lynels
With that beard Kyle is looking a little less Thor and a lot more Aquaman
Even without special equipment, Link is extremely strong. In The Wind Waker game, Link can lift a jar filled with water over his head. Assuming Link is 4 foot tall, the jar seems to be roughly 3.5 feet in diameter and 4.5 feet tall. As Link runs around with the bottle, water is clearly sloshing, which means the jar is almost completely full. Let's be generous and say the jar is 3 feet and 4 feet, that puts the volume at around 113 cubic feet. This can be converted to 845 US liquid gallons (3198.67 liters). That's over 7,000 lbs (3,175 kg). Not including the weight of the jar, or the fact that he can dead lift it and run around freely and seemingly forever. (that stamina, man)
This is all assuming Earth's gravity, and as most people probably know, video games typically have higher gravity.

Hey Kyle love the Show!!! Thinking about it (Sorry im not a mathy person), Link swings his sword (i think) 4 times with a full motion under 2 seconds and the last strike launches the enemy a good distance including the moblins in Breath of the wild which are twice if not theree times as big as Link making his shoulders and torso produce insane levels of torque to launch someone. Also running around with the Hylian shield and master sword, arrows, etc. His cardio running and climbing with all this stuff ALL the time he would also have insane cardio and muscular endurance. His accuracy and speed that he can load, aim, and fire arrows at targets and get bulls eyes give him insane thought speeds. Then the hero spin. In smash ultimate, he can spin himself fast enough to fly 10ft off the ground essentially being a human helicopter. That’s probably a reason link doesn’t punch or use hand to hand combat is because he would one punch everyone. Also in twilight princess in death mountain he had to wrestle the strongest Goron champion (or second. It’s been a while) in order to gain access to the mines. Aside from the iron boots link used used literally nothing else besides his raw strength to win. He is even able to walk inside a active volcano 3 feet from live lava and not die. Link is Awesome and best Boi
Dude not only smacks a charging Silver Lynel with a shield to a full stop without being pushed back, he even recoils it backwards
Well, in BotW Link can carry a block of ice over his head that (from all I can figure out; the density of ice, cubic feet, and all that jazz) must weigh around 9000 or 10,000 pounds. No gauntlets or anything that time around. Please, someone, correct me if I'm wrong, bcause that seems almost ridiculous. XD Great video. Had me dying on the floor!
I really think Link greatest strength is his ability to use all the tools at his disposal.
And this is without even talking about Link's OTHER superhuman abilities. He can be on Death Mountain without protective gear in air hot enough for his skin to SPONTANEOUSLY CATCH FIRE (that would mean he's in conditions comparable to the surface of Venus) and he can survive it just by wolfing down food every few seconds.
Wasn't there a Link vs Cloud Death Battle!
Which he Won!
You aren't wrong. They did do a death battle using a composite, albeit moderately nerfed, Link, vs a pre super soldier Cloud (at least thats the only excuse I can think of for how weak they determined him to be).
Yeah, that entire deathbattle was a bit of a mess. As far as I can tell, a lot of LoZ items are magic artifacts with potent, albeit niche effects. It's a lot more likely that his gauntlets, for example, work by making objects that Link tries to lift massless, or neigh so. Aka, our Hylian hero can easily apply the force required to toss it over his head.
The stasis ability in BotW clearly slows time surrounding the object considerably, ergo, he's striking the suspended object at ludicrous speeds and applying a much larger force than he normally would.
As it stands the majority of LoZ gameplay and story beats just aren't consistent with Link having that level of super strength. If he was capable of striking that hard, I don't think there's an object without magical superarmor that wouldn't be sundered or completely destroyed by a single strike.
Cloud's just superhuman and proficient with the use of magic materia. Link may be more versatile, sure, but Cloud is almost certainly a much more dangerous combatant.
@@AlexKlindt I wouldn't even say that Link is more versatile. perhaps for accomplishing mundane tasks, but in combat, I don't think thats actually true. Materia can do a whole lot of stupid crap, and when you combine then together, they can do a whole lot more.
That may be true, but circa most everything after the original game, Cloud's been shown to rely on his physical abilities over materia use almost universally.
@@AlexKlindt Maybe. It could also be argued that he didn't have them/have time to get them, which is why he doesn't use them as much. IE in Advent Children, he actually has a pretty massive stash of materia, which would be silly to have if he doesn't use it, but everything goes to crap before he has a chance to retrieve it. In addition to that, in the original game, Cloud has the highest balance of stats in the game. If they intended him as nothing more than a bruiser, then why would they have given him, if I remember correctly, the third best magic stat in the game, with the number one slot getting killed off halfway through? further more, even if he prefers to use physical abilities, doesn't mean that we would ignore other parts of his arsenal. And lastly, and this is absolutely personal bias, everything after the original game feels more like they wanted to milk a popular product for money, more than them wanting to expand on the original idea, so I take everything past the original with a grain of salt, since beyond the original its a bunch of retconning inconsistent garbage (mostly at least).
Im sure someone else has made this comment already but i must express this. In breath of the wild,(and probably some other games too) there is a variety of materials link can pick up. 149, to be exact. And you can carry 999 of each material. That brings us a potential 148851 items. Find out the weight of each item, add it all up and multiply it by 999, you can see just how much link could carry. I know this kinda thing is normal in video games, but the scale link takes it to is kind of crazy. On top of being able to carry this, he does everything with breaking so much as a sweat. He can walk, run, swim, climb and (somehow?) glide with his paraglider. Side note: he also carries weapons, shields bows, arrows, ALL his clothes, money and every key item. I know that’s kind of insignificant at this point, but still. So on top of his monumental ability so throw or apply force to things, it’s kind of crazy simply how much this man holds all the time.
