      I would prefer to have over 1 storey of altitude. Otherwise, you're still weaving through streets, between buildings, and trees, and stuff. Make it at least 15' for rooftops, just to be on the safe side, because most single storey suburban homes don't have flat roofs. Otherwise, you're talking about as much of a game changer as riding around the trailer park on a moped. Your feet are over pedestrian's heads, that's about it. (Not to mention, just falling from 10 feet, going about 35mph probably isn't the sort of "Game changer" you're thinking of, unless you think crutches are cool, for some reason.)

      Because you need to get away from these pesky birds. Note that during the migration period, some birds create 'clouds' of millions of birds and there is absolutely no way you will not fly into one, if you happen to be in one of their paths. While this doesn't seem like much, Kyle points out that even if you're 'only' flying 550 km/h, the force of the impact with the bird is 90,000N which is enough to completely destroy you even if you were made out of solid diamond and since we are talking momentum here, the ONLY way to protect you, is for you to have enough mass to distribute this force evenly, like - say - a Boeing 747 but it would still suffer a lot of structural damage.. No ring, no force field, nothing can protect you from the conservation of momentum. That's exactly the reason why airliners fly at 30,000 feet.

  • @likekkk
    @likekkk Год назад +72

    One aspect I think is cool about flight is that, assuming it wasn't tiring in any way, you could just passively float. It depends on which flight superpower 'model' you're going on, but would be extremely handy in itself. Also I think it would still be cool to go slow. I'm not up to date on laws about flying, but you could probably fly (obviously slowly) at about double the height of an average person (~3.5 metres). This would be incredibly useful for getting through crowds. Last idea, assuming you don't need to be in a specific stance, you could get on a bike or something like that and use your ability to propel yourself forwards. This would be incredibly cost efficient and wouldn't break any laws, and could still be safe, efficient, and effective.

Of course considering all physical limitations, you wouldn't be able to fly like a superhero but just imagine flying to your local shop or university with a car speed above the houses. Huge time savings even across short distances like few kilometers, huge cost savings because of eliminating a need for any personal transport and lots of new experience

    Everyone thinks the best super powers to have are Flying, Invisibility, Teleporting, Shapeshifting, Stopping Time/Time travel, Mindreading, Strength and Speed. But after thinking about it for awhile, even though stopping time would be great to save lives, I think the best super power to have would be the power of suggestion/persuasion. Not quite. See, people have this strange quirk about not liking to be slaves. And laws about unlawful imprisonment + forced labour too. Most superpowers that are considered heroic, are those that influence yourself, giving you extra stuff. When you go into mind-control and other perception-affecting powers, then it's not so clear. And when you gain time by draining others, it's far less heroic too. Which is why we already use money to waste other's people time, lawfully. Now, if your power gives you a lot of money, and you pay people to do stuff for you...then it's fine.

    Falcon (or indeed Angel from the X-Men) works within most of these restrictions. He doesn't tend to go that high and it's usually fairly short range so he's not going to need to check weather maps etc. I'm less thoroughly familiar with Angel but there's really only been a couple of times in the comics that Falcon has flown long distances (eg from Arizona to New York). The speed is really the biggest limiting factor and he doesn't break the limits that much compared to characters like Superman who also have superspeed built in. His outfit in the comics does have a history of leaving a fair bit of skin exposed, which is a problem, *but* he actually has a little bit of handwavium built in to his origin story - the Red Skull used a cosmic cube to turn him into a sleeper agent who seemed to be Steve's "ideal partner" with the intention for Sam to turn on him when the secret layers of his personality got triggered, and with the ease that he picked up a lot of things you can read it as the cosmic cube giving him a small level of enhancement as well which could potentially help solve the windchill issue. Granted, he didn't actually fly originally, but he didn't talk to birds originally either, his ability to communicate with birds telepathically developed and got stronger gradually over time. And Angel's a mutant so his mutation could easily just protect him from windchill as well.

    I think the hardest part people don't think about is the neck strain. Lay flat and then tilt your head back to look forward constantly. It's not a natural resting position. Our heads naturally look forward from a sitting or standing position. Now factor in the wind resistance further pushing back on your head the entire time and you're going to have one hell of a sore neck in a very short time. You're going to end up looking straight down trying to rest your neck which will prevent you from looking where you're going.
    If you fly in a sitting or standing position you're going to greatly increase wind resistance; you'll quickly feel like you're in a wind tunnel so you'd need some sort of seat with a clear aerodynamic shell... that would all be dependent on how much additional weight your power can support.

    People really overlook the more mundane benefits that flight would grant.
    It would affect any and all motion. Never worry about tripping or falling or getting stuck anywhere.
    Slippery surfaces don't matter because you move yourself independent of your surroundings.
    You could push way heavier objects because you can just fly-push yourself into them without the limitation of how much force your weight+friction can generate.
    Fighting is super easy because -you- don't have to dodge and attack. You can just fling yourself around and drop kick everyone from any angle with zero downsides.
    Don't feel like getting out of bed? Just levitate your blanket burrito self to the kitchen to get coffee and levitate right back.
    Literally your entire life would become an effortless rainbow cloud dreamland from a physical standpoint.
    Every movement we will ever make is completely reliant on the 3 laws of motion and flight would let you compeltely ignore the 1st and 3rd.

    Just a quick note on the convective skin cooling thing: downhill skiers can move up to 90mph in some cases, but even average non-olympians can do 60mph on skis pretty easily. They do this in sub-freezing temperatures routinely. At European resorts many runs are several km long and take much more than 2 minutes to descend, even at great speed. Olympic downhill courses, even at maximum human ski speed, sometimes take over 2 minutes to complete. It is extremely rare for anyone to experience ski-induced frostbite, even on exposed face skin. Further, my grandfather got frostbite on his toes in WWII flying missions with open windows, BUT it took many hours of sitting sedentary in those cold aerial temperatures on bombing missions... and only happened because they didn't issue his size (14) insulated flight boots at that time. So, if skiers don't get frostbite on their faces, and bomber crews only get frostbite after hours of sitting still with the wrong boots, I think the danger of frostbite can be fairly easily mitigated with some simple winter gear. Nothing Iron-Man fancy. Its just not the inhibiting factor that you are depicting, unless you are flying around naked up there. Now bird strikes, oxygen, etc. those are much more pressing concerns.

    • @genoobtlp4424

      While skiing you're mostly wearing some insulating clothing, except on your face, which is surprisingly not that bothered byfreezing temperatures anyways, but keep in mind, that this is a guy from Los Angeles speaking, if I'm not mistaken, where it's still 23°C right now, so he probably forgot, that there are warm jackets, that do a surprisingly good job at keeping you from freezing.

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom 5 лет назад +13

      @J Paterson I readily concede the cloud argument in that I was assuming dry skin. I object to the ducking argument, in that flying would naturally assume an aerodynamic position, just as skiing would. Hands forward, face down. The ducking (or tucking as its called) from skiing would not put any less airflow over the face than flying. And as far as mountaineering, that is an all-day or multi-day adventure. The frostbite is certainly not normally suffered in the first few minutes of climbing, but over a longer period of prolonged exposure. I am simply stating that the 2 minutes referenced in the video is ridiculously fast compared to real-life experiences of people with exposed skin and high cold winds. Not that you cannot get frostbite... you certainly can.

    • @RyanAlexanderBloom
      @RyanAlexanderBloom 5 лет назад +4

      @@genoobtlp4424 yeah, thats all I'm saying. A little trip to REI and you could probably fly around for quite a while. Maybe not hours and hours, but a quick trip of 10-15 minutes probably would not result in frostbite, even at 60mph.

    Even given all the restrictions listed, I would still take this power. Having to wear a flight suit and oxygen in exchange for never getting stuck in traffic? I would take that any day. Even if you have to limit you elevation to only a kilometer or two, that is still high enough to easily go over most objects. And flight speed limited to 50-60 kph would still beat just about any conventional travel method simply in terms of being able to fly directly there and not take roads that aren't direct. As for the mid air collisions, staying under a Km or two would have you well under most flight pats, with the exception of flying right next to an airport. With the issue of bird strikes, most people are able to drive safely at 50-60 kph, so I think that avoiding birds wouldn't be too big of an issue. So while you couldn't go speeding through the air at Mach whatever, or easily travel far distances, on a day to day basis, I still think this power would be viable, and very useful, even with the limitations you have listed.

      You completely miss the mark. Kyle points out the simple fact that even if superman was made of diamond, or if he was in fact Iron man, he would still not survive a bird strike: There is no material known to man or even an energy field or anything else than can beat conservation of momentum. The kinetic energy of the bird relative to the fast flyer is huge. A ring - no matter of which composition and of which race or even of intergalactic multidimensional race, cannot beat conservation of momentum, as the momentum has to go somewhere, so even if the ring creates some sort of magical super strong field, the sudden momentum change would still be transferred to whoever flies in said field at super high relative velocity, and he would still be hit just as if that field didn't exist at all. Even he was made of diamond - with the mass of an average human being (and not - say, the mass of a Boeing 747), he would still crumble into dust. There goes all that superhero BS :-).

Even diamond would crumble to dust from the sudden change of momentum these 90,000N would impart upon impact and no magical or else field will defend against it, since the guy in said field still needs to change his momentum instantly. And this is exactly the problem. So he cannot be made out of flesh and blood. So what is he made of? Steel won't take it, diamond won't either.. Neutron star material? Than would simply explode in Earths pressure. Black hole? Common. In short, what Kyle points out is that none of this superhero stuff stands even a moment scrutiny. You don't need deep reflection to disqualify it, all you need is to apply the laws of physics and it crumbles away instantly. The interesting thing is that even human imagination falls short here, the moment you simply apply physics. Even "MAGIC" won't save the poor superman when he hits a bird. All you have to do to realize this, is apply conservation of momentum, and that's game over for suppy.

      Superman has a ton of other powers that would keep him safe. Honestly, so do most flying superheroes.

      @@sonoutama That would be the superpower I choose depending on how potent it is. If we assume we can control our bodies and the air around us, we can make a pressurized bubble around us which will allow us to accelerate to thousands of miles per hour and be perfectly fine since we wouldn’t make contact with any incoming air nor weather. Of course we might be blind because the bubble would block photons but we’re assuming photons can get in. Then, with all of these parameters, telekinesis would be the best super power around. You could make yourself look stronger than normal, move at extremely high speeds with your self made air bubbles, fly as fast as you want, and control anything you lay your eyes on. At this point it is magic but hey, magic is also extremely cool

    My question is, at what point would the air resistance cause enough friction (like a rocket on reentry) to warm you up enough to counteract the temperature and wind chill? Is that possible?

      It isn't Friction that warms up rockets on reentry. Rockets and metors heat up because they compress the air in front of them. Remember one of are problems is not enough air.

      It's possible, but you're talking supersonic speeds. BUT, then you run into the problem where the friction from drag starts to cook you alive. Also, you have to deal with the sonic boom you'd create, and all civil aviation authorities (like the FAA) would want to have a word with you. Did you know that, at least in the US, that noise abatement issues was one of the reason Concorde flights were restricted to specific airports? Yeup, the plane sucked at subsonic flights so the crew would do what they could to get up to speed as quickly as possible... and that really limited where the Concord could go.

    I once dreamed that I could fly for very short distances by flapping my arms up and down, just as a bird flaps its wings. Realistically, I was only able to get a few feet off the ground, with some effort. Flying in the dream was physically demanding. It's no wonder that even birds can't fly when they're as heavy as adult humans.

    Even for the average citizen that just wants to take a fly around the city, you would have to watch for lamp posts, traffic lights, trees, antennae, buildings, cables, birds, bugs and bad weather, so it would be mandatory to use at least a motorcycle helmet and a good leather jacket.
