Yeah.
This is why landing in a roll is good; it gives your body more time to disperse of the kinetic energy and it looks cool, a win-win situation.
But what if you're failing straight? it will look weird
+Just BØNY - Do you mean falling straight down? If that's the case I don't see how that would make it look weird if you actually do the roll properly and do it as you hit the ground if the fall was high enough to justify it.
You can't roll if you fall straight down, because it will require you to move in a completely different direction than the direction of the fall. Watch parkour vids and you will always see them rolling when they fall sideways, not straight down.
But it doesn’t crack the ground so it’s not cool
I think it would look cooler if you could control your deceleration enough to manage a sudden stop just before connecting with the surface, for an impactless stop. Supers who fly unaided should be able to manage that as they seem to ignore momentum most of the time.
1:19 Or how Riddick describes it "It's not the fall that kills you... it's the sudden stop at the bottom"
Yeah he was making a reference/joke about it
the fall DOES kill you tho when you're afraid of heights, realize you're falling, and then have a heart attack

Unless your mr pimm holding a tank

I've done the landing before, not on purpose but that's kinda what happens when you end up stumbling after the initial landing phase (I also faceplanted the floor). My foot slipped, my knee went down and I went forward to the ground.
Bink bonk boom. Really graceful, lolz

Totally graceful 😂😂😂
The only successful thing I ever did (at a pretty low height from the ground) was the glide thing that Batman does in the movies...it kinda worked but I was just being a nerd and seeing if it was possible. However I think to do the actual Batman glide from a higher altitude well it's a bit more complicated than it might seem

A parkour roll is probably the best technique for landing. And it looks cool too
Agreed on both points.
Now I have a better way of explaining to classes why the roll works. I've always just said that the roll redirects your downward energy forwards, which means we don't smash into the floor.
The coolest part of the parkour roll, in my opinion, is that you can actually use the energy coming out of the roll to do something else: run, run up a wall, vault, probably some tricking moves or whatever else.
It’s not cool, it’s actually pretty cringe
Ninja roll
Using the phrase "pretty cringe" is infinitely cringier than a roll on landing.
Jonathan Spier
Haven't tried that parachute landing, but judging by the position the legs end up, it doesn't seem to be practical outside of parachuting.
Parachuting isn't free falling, if you do the PLF after a high jump, all of the momentum will go to your feet and they will smash into the ground.

Thanks for the advice Thor
I think your velocity numbers for Iron Man 2 are off by an order of magnitude, because he's not dropping from a standstill..
If you watch the scene leading up to that, he's not going from a stabilized position 30m up, he's jumping from an airplane at cruising altitude, descending in an aerodynamic position. Let's assume the extra mass from the suits exactly cancels out the extra wind resistance from being slightly bigger, and say that his terminal velocity in a head-first position would be about the same as a typical person's (about 300 km/h). He then accelerates himself further (just eyeballing it, it looks like his speed roughly doubles), and then smashes into the ground, making no visible attempt to decelerate (although he obviously reorients in the last second or so). So, that's about 600km/h, or about 166 m/s. So, I get a total force of 772,000 kN. Alternately, he's experiencing an acceleration (assuming 1/24 of a second) of 4000 m/s/s, or about 408 Gs, over that fraction of a second.
So, yeah. I don't care what that suit is made of. Tony Stark's skull has been squeezed through the neck of his suit and is now firmly lodged in what remains of his pelvic girdle. Not that his brain hasn't always been located there, but now it's a bit more literal.
woah, I probably couldn’t be able to solve something like this.
He said he's assuming that he fell from a stand still 100 feet above the ground. Yes, it's not 100% accurate but it's to give an example of how bad it would be.
Tony's suit has thrusters that slow down his impact at the moment of contact, actually.
#nerdknowledge
+ Epic Lightning, uh, aaaactually, even a rapid deceleration in the last moment is only going to spread all that force over only fractionally more time.
It may no longer be an instant stop but the difference is tiny, like driving your car into a solid concrete wall vs padding that wall with a few mattresses.
The impulse will still be enough to liquefy his brain.

You know a very cool but practical way of landing? Perform a roll for landing.
Wasn’t Batman’s cape designed to lengthen the time of his fall?
Quinntus79 like the Arkham games, it slows him down before landing. Except if you dive shockwave.
It does, like your hair, but it's so loose o doubt it would do anything significant
Shockwave Shockwave it's a bit more effective than your hair lol. Considering that it can become rigid and let him glide, it's more like a parachute than a bedsheet. Regardless, it's gonna hurt
Batman was also trying to stop the car
He was considering the time it took for Batman to reach the vehicle. So, whatever affect the cape had, he still dropped at a rate great enough, and stopped fast enough to shatter his bones. If you land on a vehicle with enough force to total it like that, you're probably not walking away. It's whatever though, no movie is perfect, but when the plot, story, and characters are great enough, it becomes easier to give a pass to minor flaws like this.

My favorite super hero landing to this day is Selene's at the very beginning of "Underworld". In an era of cheesy 3 point landing slowly looking up at the camera with cracked concrete below, she instead jumps off of a tower only to land with both legs, gently as if she jumped off something two feet high. I thought it was the most badass way to land; especially at the time since it was unexpected.
I do this in my climbing gym all the time, makes me feel cool even though I failed a bouldering route. PS we land on a crash pad.
ok "cool" guy, let me know when you shatter your knee
"You can't lose your mass"
Welp, there goes my diet
Weight isn't Mass.
I know, but if you lose mass, you lose weight
Yes. But if you lose weight, you lose weight. Mass is constant, weight isn't. The only way to lose mass is to cut off your limbs.
Yes, mass is constant and doesn't rely on gravity, but weight does. But here on Earth, 90kg of mass is 90kg of weight, because we use Earth gravity as a sort of baseline. If you go to the moon, your weight changes, but your mass stays the same. If you weigh 90kg and cut off 10kg, you've still lost 10kg of mass, and weight. You are less massive, and therefore, weigh less.
I think I got that right.
Yes, you are correct. But I don't see your point. You can still lose weight on Earth, meaning your diet isn't ruined.
Can't argue with anything here! Having practiced Parkour for a good while now, we've basically tested various landing techniques to find out which one is most useful if you don't want to destroy your knees. Essentially a break-fall roll becomes useful anywhere from 1m drops and beyond.
However, I'd like to point out that when you mention "normal landings" you're actually using two different techniques in the footage you show. The first one shows you just bending your legs to absorb the impact, whereas the second example, with the fat height drop in the rock climbing hall, shows you not only bending your knees, but also tapping the floor and bending your arms to absorb impact as well. In Parkour, we usually call this a "safety tap" and it makes a massive difference in how the impact is absorbed across your body.
Just to show you how effective it can be, watch this; ruclips.net/video/HlZlzn1NFWQ/видео.htmlm5s
Try taking that drop without your hands... your knees would probably equal pudding after that.
Because Science video analysis of District B13 landings next?
I noticed the same thing. I always assumed a "real" superhero landing would involve the feet hitting first, then the legs bending to absorb a lot of the force, slowing down until the knee impacts the ground a lot more gently, and at the same time the arm hits the ground and similarly bends to also absorb some impact. The way these calculations are being done is seeming to assume a single point of impact on just the kneecap causing them to come to a complete stop as an essentially rigid body, which is clearly not how it's done. At least not by non-superstrength heroes.
Yeah, there's a significant difference between the rigid-body drop where you're already crouched/kneeling before you hit the ground, and a landing where you land with your feet then collapse down into a crouch, and rebound to the classic pose. Keeping your thigh vertical the whole time is going to hurt (and limit how low your core can get before you stop, thereby limiting your stopping distance and stopping time), but I can get lower on one knee than I can squatting, so landing in a position that naturally rebounds into the SHL pose gives me a better stopping distance than anything that doesn't leave me flat on the ground...
Yeah I consider every time batman does that style of landing a poor choice,. If you have Superman or Wonder woman fine They have reinforced bodies even Deadpool or Wolverine can get away with it as there healing factor means that it would hurt but repair. Iron man I think can cheat it. If you think about it he has 3 thrusters pointed downward. one on his foot two on his hands so he can cut the thrust above the landing zone then do a last second suicide burn a couple meters above impact to slow his impact and give the appearance of one.
PK safety roll for the win!
When I was practicing parkour I’d do them all the time!
It’s all about extending time when landing and spreading the force of impact
8:06 who's Bruce Wayne? We are talking about Batman not a rich guy
If this man was my science teacher, I would know I'm headed to harvord
In regards to the bat man scene, the force is not correct because the car is crumpled over a period of time, therefore creating a higher impulse, (F*DeltaT). He demonstrates this earlier with the egg example.
Thank you! I was yelling that at the screen.
Yes the car absorb the more impact force better than land because of its density and space.
Also he didn’t account for wind resistance, Batman’s cape is specifically noted to be designed for gliding, and in the scene he is using it to control his fall. Also he fails to account for the Iron Man armours flaps and stabilizers.
@@richardbrown3055 he literally already said he wasn’t going to account for wind resistance…

This is awesome :-) your acting is really good and the content full of physics explained simply gives some interesting physics rules, laws, concepts in a very playful way which we almost never see in schools (yet, to increase viewer's intake of physics stuff, you could consider explaining the equations more slowly and comprehensively, at times it was difficult to think along and would require repeated watching). Anyway, what you do is more than good, wish you well!

Wanna know what's cinematic? Kyle's hair in slo-mo.
Well, it is Kinematic.
That was awesome. I like how you added info regarding parkour landing methods.
My question on watching the rock climbing gym landings:
Is it him, or is it Pantene?
Pantene breaks my hair! I wouldn't recommend it even if you have the conditioner.
I recommend Elvive. The shampoo doesn't break my hair, the drying is milder, and the conditioner does separate out the hair well. Use it in palm quantities and pat it down your hair before you massage.
2:05 "You can not change your mass" I was planning on losing weight but nvm then :-(
weight is not the same as mass
When you say you'll lose weight you are actually saying you'll lose mass. It's just that in our everyday life we call mass weight (no idea why). Weight = mass x g (g= exelaration of gravity). To change your weight, since you can't really change g, you can only gain or lose mass. (g changes a just a little when you are on earth depending on where and how high from the sea's surfice you are, but that is so small a change that it doesn't really make a difference on your wight, or it changes if you go to another planet or any celestial body like the moon, but here I assume that you stay on earth).
Almost Anything N U W R D
almost anything actually mass and weight are different,
Mass is a measurement of the amount of matter something contains, while Weight is the measurement of the pull of gravity on an object.
also the Mass of an object doesn't change when an object's location changes. Weight, on the otherhand does change with location.
think about it if you are standing on earth and your mass is 80 kilograms and you weigh 200 pounds, and you go to the moon, your mass stays the same while your weight doesn't
Tyler Tennies yeah, I know that. I never said that mass and weight are the same. I just said that mass and weight are related to each other (I don't know if the word related is the correct term, probably isn't, but what I mean is that when mass changes, weight changes as well, with the equation connecting them being Weight = mass x g)
Hey Kyle,
So Batman was crushing the van in that scene. Since the top of the van was compressed in that moment, doesn't that reduce the impact force because in increases time AND distance it takes for him to stop?
Also another factor in this video, is the Jerk, the rate of change in acceleration. When you're falling in anything that does reduce jerk, your organs will literally crumble in on each other, so even if the force doesn't shatter your bones, the jerk should shatter your brain.. and other squishy matter inside a human.
._.
Cristian Morales you just shattered my brain, jerk.

I looked up gold-titanium alloys and they're a real thing: phys.org/news/2016-07-lab-titanium-gold-alloy-harder-steels.html
Density in a 3-1 mix of titanium and gold would be 8.2g/cm^3, roughly the same as that of iron or steel.
Despite the increased hardness, the alloy is not very much stronger than pure titanium, with a compressive strength of roughly 170MPa, improved to 200MPa at best.
If Iron Man's thigh is that of an average man, with a circumference of 20.35 inches (0.517m), and the suit is a hollow column surrounding the thigh with a thickness of X meters, then the 31MPa pressure from a 30m SuperHero Landing would have to be transmitted to the rest of the suit through a surface area of 0.517X m^2.
We work out that the thickness of the TiAu metal around Iron Man's thigh would have to be at least 31/(200 x 0.571) = 0.27m.
That's right, Iron Man's thighs would have to be a full 27x2: 54cm wider than Tony Stark's thighs. That adds up to a very THICC width of nearly a meter per leg.
Of course, the Marvel show writers could have done a *little* bit of research, and found the gold-coloured Titanium Nitride, with a compressive strength 2100MPa (more than 10x better - www.matbase.com/material-categories/ceramics-and-glasses/crystalline/technical/nitrides/material-properties-of-titanium-nitride-tin.html#properties) and reduce the suit's thigh thickness to a more reasonable 2.5cm, but TiN sounds less cool than 'titanium-gold alloy'.
Ya....so?
Matter Beam you definitely got the super nerd status, what wonderful information
Matter Beam The reason given in the movies as to why Tony uses a titanium-gold alloy is because it is resistant to ice build-up, the thing that caused the Mark 2 suit to shut down.
@umainebearman:
Fun with maths and physics. Its also funny to think of Iron Man walking around with huge metal thighs.
@Hose Clamp
Thanks! I achieved SuperNerd status in the very first vlog.
@Joseph Morse
Interesting chain of logic.
If I were to solve the problem, I'd use a hydrophobic surface (repels water) and simply add a heating system to the suit's surface, like many cars have today... no need to switch out a strong material for a softer material!
Remember when Rhodey went into free fall and smashed his spine?
The MCU acknowledges there’s high tech wonkery in the suits that eliminates the force of impact.
Problem with that is the suit wasn't even powered on. He should have been smashed into a bloody pulp when he hit the ground.

Today's special guest, HowToBasic.
Wtf
*non-descript grunt*
Egg-scelent
I was gonna say Game Theory since this comes so soon after the newest Sonic episode. :P
what do you mean? Kyle is howtobasic
When you think about it, the parkour roll allows not just more time untill the standing position, you're still falling, but slowing the fall and giving your legs the time to excert some force on the ground to make the fall softer (although the bottom part still gets some big part of the fall damage it would receive)
3:20 Discount Thor looked badass in slo-mo tho'!
mr. good, I don’t feel so stark
ZiDa Herr Gut, ich fühle mich nicht so stark
3:22 but it just looks so cool!
Thor came back to Earth be like:
Three weeks ago I did the exact same landing you showed in 7:20 - 7:27, in the exact same conditions (bouldering, similar altitude, lots of padding in the floor), but you landed really gracefully while I'm sitting here with my recently operated broken ankle.
The sudden stop at the end is pretty killer, yeah :p
"You cannot reduce your mass"
not unless I cut off my legs
you smart
Without legs, you can't do the superhero landing !
Our Boy Roy but the legs mass still exists
So i.m guessing you.ve never seen the biggest loser?
I love that scene (0:56) because it shows him slowing down his momentum using his boosters and because he learns from his mistakes at the Ironman 2 stark expo scene.
No one:
Kyle: ( 5:25 ) TREAT ME LIKE A SPIDER-BOIIIIIII
You look like young Thor 😂
Like, 2 years late on that joke...
Vegan Thor...
He looks like jecksepticeye with long hair
Teuku Nazli kurniawan Thor isn’t really blonde you idiot . That marvel version is fake
Zurx yup
Theres a man standing on a bridge about to jump, a physicist walks by and yells "don't do it, you have so much potential!"
Chemical potential. Go with fire instead.
Mr. Stark 😭😩😯😨

I am a civil engineer, and also a martial artist. I know people at my old dojo who were chosen as extras for horror movies specifically because they know how to fall. The first part of what you said, about landing on your feet and slowly crumpling to spread out the impact time, is dead on. However, when you plant you feet you want to give yourself a little bit of forward or backward moment, and roll to end up with the final landing on your back. This serves to spread the final impact force across your entire body, rather than just your legs. This helps ensure that the resultant stress across any individual member in your body is not enough to cause damage. However, you need to have a lot of experience doing this on the mat before you try it in real life, as there is a real risk of landing wrong and breaking your neck.
Deadpool already said it’s hard on your knees
He does a Superherolanding in Deadpool 2, and hurt his knees really badly. But he is Deadpool, he heals.
Toxicity No, he’s Deadpool 2
Does anybody else find this guy just cringy and corny??
my assumption was always that the knee/fist were not the first to hit.... but that both feet hit and they bend their knees to slow themselves to a stop (using their super hero muscles) and the fist to the ground was to stop them from falling over forward (also the "pose" after is very similar to the stance sprinters and football players start in)
ke6960 the issue is not what you land on it's the shortened time it takes to come to a complete stop. You could land any method which makes you stop faster and apply those forces and potentially break anything rather than save it falling slower. The knees are just a good way to land as they buy you the longest time
reallyyou kidd ... right my point was not to argue against that but to add that if you could land and slow yourself but end up in the superhero pose you would be ready to move sooner than landing vertically on both feet then standing all the way back up
Again with the rolling: forwards, sideways or backwards, Jiu Jitsu rolls are designed to start with you falling and end with you on your feet in a ready position. Ready to fight right there, not to compete in the 100m hurdles, but ready. We used to practise a combination of backward roll and defence against a kick by having someone push us over and try to kick us. 10% good stuff, 30% might work on drunks, 55% bullshit and 5% getting yourself crippled for the sake of a cotton belt, but the 10% good stuff was good stuff.
Right, that was my assumption too -- that the superhero landing was basically just a normal landing (complete with flexing knees to slow the landing, as described in the video) and one hand out for balance and stability ... that the knee is never supposed to actually touch the ground.
the only argument i see against rolling is similar to lifeguards diving (at least the way i learned)... if you dive you have to take your eyes off the person you are saving (or fighting as with superheros) so we were taught to jump in feet first and use your arms to keep your head above water as much as possible when jumping in (and in the "super hero landing" their head is up and looking forward usually)
He's trying so hard not to laugh when the egg is thrown at him.
Superhero’s (superhero landing)
Physics (I will break you)
This channel is to comic book films what Mythbusters is to all Hollywood films and TV shows =P
Great stuff but most people would say that Batman would be ok because... he's Batman! hahaa.
And video games.
Iron Man would probably be fine.
He wasn't ok in the Dark Knight Rises movie though. I'm not saying it's because the hero landing, he did it like once in the whole Nolan's trilogy (don't remember seeing him doing it more than once), but still wasn't ok after some years of batmaning. The hero landing might just add to all that damage that he had after all these years of being Batman (8 years was it?).
Yeah, with the gear Batman and iron man have, they can land however they want
Of course he would be okay because it is Batman! We talking about the Guy who has ALWAYS Kryptinite with him because Superman COULD become a Threat....ore mind controled like in jung Youstice.
Owch oof my bones

UwU yu want som hewp? *nuzzles
That's bone hurting *JUICE*
Well, I plan on being a supervillain, so this is non-applicable to me.
That's why people that do parkour usually roll, right?
So they can expand the time of stopping time at the momentum, reducing impact
FUCK I THOUGHT OF THAT BEFORE THE END OF THE VIDEO
