Huge thanks again to Tony Swatton of Sword and Stone for helping me with this. He's incredibly knowledgeable, and has built some of your favorite props (like Wolverine's claws, Iron Man's armor, and stuff I literally cannot tell you!). I'd love to bring him in again to geek out. -- KH
Surely the Gauntlet would be designed in such a way that the snap would be taken into account, it was made by Eitri after all. Or maybe Thanos used the reality stone to create a reality where gauntlets can snap.
Hey Kyle,
Tony swatton is also on the channel AWE ME where he made weapons like sokka’s meteor sword from avatar.
Loved the episode btw.
A great episode Kyle. Was great having Tony on this. I'm sure that hammer was itching to be lifted by someone worthy.

If the gauntlet did not let him snap he could just use the reality stone to allow him to
It's Pencis it could be an effect of the Gauntlet itself. When making a wish, as long as you make the snapping motion the triggering of the wish itself creates the snap.
Or Thanos could be powerful to make the snap work anyway. I mean he beat Hulk so bad that he hid inside Dr. Banner.
@@christiand1337 I still find that fight bs. Hulk is the only being in the universe Thanos actively avoids combat with.
The only way I can see that particular fights outcome is Hulk wasnt listening to Banner & instead just tried smashing without thinking.
pyruleanfire demon Or Thanos knew he couldn't beat the Hulk in a long, drawn out fight so he whooped him as fast as possible, before he can get more mad. I mean it's difficult to say for sure. Maybe Thanos used the stones in a way to imprison the Hulk into Banner
He would need to be able to clench his fist and snap at the same time
Lmao

If you look at the actual gauntlet, it's metal plate against metal plate, so it could never snap, being as polished as it is. You can't build up the friction pressure that gives you the nice snap... But honestly? I'm not gonna argue with the guy who just wiped out half of life in the universe... Might be hazardous to my life at that point...
Michael Berthelsen if you apply enough force between his fingers, he is stronger than the hulk, you won't need as much friction force to create the snap sound.
the snaping technique kyle mentioned is actually wrong, you don't press your middle finger onto oyur thumb off cener, you press onto it straight, then, while your have built up a lot of tension, you move your thumb out of the way, causing your middle finger to slide past it.
But if you have the Reality Stone then anything is now possible, at least that was my reasoning behind being able to do it.
It's still sliding down and making impact on your hand which is what is causing the sound you hear.
Regardless of the snapping process and physics it would be hilarious though if the first thing Thanos actually did with basically infinite power was give two small pieces of metal friction.
If Roy Mustang was in this episode, the whole building would be on fire.
Kevin Phillips I’m pretty sure Roy can control his glove to not create fire.
Brian LaBrake way to kill the joke, Buzz Killington
You’re welcome friendo
Kevin Phillips lol
im just going to write why we didnt do an episode with roy mustang but hey.. this works
Well Thanos is using all 6 Infinity Stones to execute the snap, right? He could use the Reality Stone to change the material of the specific finger and palm areas of the gauntlet to make them more like fingers, the Power Stone to create more friction to make the snap louder, the Mind Stone to make every living being perceive the snap at once in their minds, the Soul Stone to evaluate the beings' character and make a random decision on whether to dustify or not, the Space Stone to enhance the snap signal out to the entire universe, and the Time Stone to create the long delay for some beings to turn to dust, like shown in the movie.
Not bad but I think you made a little mistake here :)
Since the Gauntlet can hold all 6 Stones, I'm not sure that "one" stone can affect it in any given way. (Yeah we see it got damaged by the end, but all stones were used at the same time and for a really big "attack" on everthing.
And the most problematic thing is, that I don't think the Soul Stone could dust you appart, it seems more like the Reallity Stones power that did that.
BTW are we only talking about "humanoids" or were animals and plantlife halfed too?

I'm pretty sure that what allows Thanos to do what he did in the movie is not the sound of the snap but instead the gesture of snapping his fingers. Plus in the comic it clearly shows that Thanos was in space when he snapped so it would't have created a sound anyway.
He must have created an atmosphere on that fortress, because everyone was able to speak, and the human Avengers, like Cap and Spidey, were able to breathe without assistance.
And I'm pretty sure the snapping is just symbolic, to show how simple it is to wipe out half of all sentient life forms, if you have the i-stones.
yeah that's probably true
zombieslayer118 yeah in the comics we see the sound “snap” but there’s no way of telling how loud it was. It could have been thunderous or as quiet as a whisper
zombieslayer118 but dont forget with the reality stone he bend reality so metal or not it would make a snapping sound
In the comics, the gauntlet is more of a glove so there is a bit more articulation
Well thats the comic

When you realize you can just use the reality stone to make the gauntlet create a snap noise........
more like when you realize the physical snapping motion probably has absolutely nothing to do with the magical nature of the gauntlet. personally I always assumed the snap was just a means to help the wearer to visualize the magic into existence.
if you think like that he could probably fart and achieve the same result if he thought hard enough XD

Alex Hop that is so extra and I love it.
I imagine so if the infinity stones can bend the laws of physics.
The Reality Gem allows its user to alter reality to what one wants or break the laws of reality and logic such as making 2 + 2 = 5, as well as the laws of physics. Minor uses allow one to resurrect the dead, distort reality around someone so it is incomprehensible, or other things that would normally be impossible. More powerful uses allow one to create any type of alternate reality one wishes. At its peak when backed by the other gems it allows one to alter reality on a universal scale.

A) If you have the infinity stones, you can bend space and artificially accelerate your fingers to make a snap happen no matter what... and B) A fingerless gauntlet would potentially be useful for a user that wants hand protection while also needing increased fingertip mobility for the use of a bow and arrow, crossbow, etc...
...Except not, because bowstrings can and will rip your fingertips off, so you absolutely want to have gloves on, and crossbow triggering mechanisms are more like large levers that don't require a tremendous amount of manual dexterity to operate, so there's no reason not to have gloves on. Unless you're planning on like... writing your reports or something in full armor, there's no reason for that; and even then, the stupid glove comes off.
ilovethelegend Yeah, sure, because all Olympic archers wear gloves.
Disregarding the fact that target shooting is an entirely different beast from combat archery, they do, actually. Target archers use a special kind of glove that only covers the tips of their index, middle, and ring fingers, because a bowstring can and will rip the skin from your fingertips. If they're not wearing a glove, it's because either they're using a trigger release, which is basically a pistol trigger attached to a little catch that holds the bowstring, or their strings have tabs on them, which are those little pieces of plastic on the rental bows at your local range.
These pieces of equipment are, indeed, made the way they are to protect the archer while reducing their manual dexterity as little as possible, which is super important in the context of target shooting. But, like I said, target shooting and combat archery are different beasts. A combat archer's concern is putting as many arrows in the general area of the enemy army as possible, the idea being that they can't dodge the rain. In that context, a plain glove would be cheaper and easier to outfit a platoon with than specialized equipment that they don't really need.
Kyle, I feel like you addressed only half the equation. The gauntlet. The other half would be the person wearing the gauntlet. Thanos is a big guy, and I would assume his hand whether in a gauntlet or not would produce much more force than a human can when snapping. Would additional force therefore produce enough audible friction and audible impact on the palm to produce the “snapping sound” all other things being equal? (No bending of physics, reality, space, time etc)
I thought Gamora was speaking figuratively at the beginning. The Reality Stone "spiraled" out Mantis and Drax fell into blocks. The literal "snap" of Thanos' fingers just hit me so hard. Fun video here.

@Brian Zoeller Except he was able to use individual stones with nothing more than a thought.
But you forget thanos is much stronger than a normal human... he could probably snap his fingers in a block of concrete...
Intellect123 Thats not the issue. The movement can happeb but finger snapping sounds is basically unique to skin
Ethan Donnelly
You misinterpreted my argument. My point was Thanos is so strong that if he did snap his fingers in a gauntlet the metal would probably act like a very thin layer of rubbery material over his hard near impenetrable skin, muscle and bones... some what parallel to a very strong adult human snapping their fingers in a latex glove... the material wouldn’t really affect the resulting “SNAP”/“CLICK” sound...
For example imagine Thanos’s middle finger and thumb pressed together with a vice like pressure of maybe 2-3 tonnes..... then being hammered down with a force of 3000n on the palm area of the gauntlet using the torque of maybe a Bugatti Vyrone (1500hp) rubbing against the fingers during the action... all of which done at super human speed (let’s say his brain can process fast enough and send signals fast enough to his fingers to make the movement get to around Mack 3 in maybe 10 nano seconds).... the sound would be phenomenally loud (with a sonic-boom shockwave type) “SNAP!!”/“CLICK” Noise.... I mean he would probably ruin the finger/thumb tips and palm area of the gauntlet in the process but it would create an ear shattering “SNAP”/“CLICK” sound
Intellect123 But thats not how sound works.
You hear a snap or click because the source of that sound holds a certain.....I hesitate to use density but I'm not fully sure which of the terms applies here.
The density of the material used for the finger snap, your skin and muscles, determines that high pitched sound.
A metal gauntlet used as you described is likely to screech as the fingers slide and then make highly metallic click, or just a hollow metal ping.
A metal gauntlet isn't gonna make a human finger click.....sigh, "because science"
Literally couldn't avoid that reference if I wanted to.
The motion could be done if the gauntlet allows for it but the sound won't be the same basically, it just can't happen.
Strength has nothing to do with it it’s the movement of air
Strength is completely inconsequential. That's not how the physics of producing that sound work.
This is the snappiest episode ever.

Comparing our old style gauntlets, made with modern earthen medals, to a gauntlet that was forged by a 300 ft high dwarf using cosmic metals and forged with the heart of a dying star... I think its safe to say that the infinity gauntlet could believably more articulate as well as more snapable.
Tanner Cook plus thanos is stronger than hulk. By applying enough force between his finger tips he can create a pressure wave mimicking a snap sound without ever needing to contact his palm.

I'm pretty sure the way the Infinity stones work is that once you possess one the power surges through you, granted you are strong enough to wield it, then it's all control of the stones power from the users mind. The snap is just for theatrics
What would happen of the flash snapped his fingers at his top speed?
MatPat calculated that flashes top speed is 9 trillion times the speed of light, so using that and F=ma you get 22.332 N (5.868e+14[speed of light times 9 trillion]×0.1), and J=D×F 155.431 joules of energy (22.332N×6.96cm[distance of thumb]), converted to Watts, and counting that its in 9 trillion times light speed because Watts are measured in joules per second, you get about 21600 megawatt hours or enough to power 2 New York's dialy, with one second of snapping. So the flash is wasting his time stopping bad guys, about 8 minutes could power America daily, and about and little under an hour of snapping and he could power the whole world daily, all he needs to do is get Cisco to hook him up with snapping energy absorption gloves or somthing, and he will save more lives than before.
Nate Von Hagen he does output enough energy to power the entire country but that energy isn't just put into batteries and used when needed. The power companies have to keep a steady flow of power going at all times and since it takes time to ramp up energy production they also have to predict when more power is needed and start increasing their power output to meet that expected need. It's a little bit more complicated than most people think it is.
Footnotes deserving, but kyle does not consider anything as faster than light
I was thinking along similar lines. Kyle does note that stronger forces involved would increase the sound made but I think what is going is the quality of the sound (the frequency) not volume.
he would have to consume 21600 megawatts of energy from food
That is if you ignore the principles of relativity

At the end of Age of Ultron, the post credits scene had Thanos put on the Gauntlet. The Gauntlet itself has points of dexterity at the joints. 3 joints on fingers 2-5, 2 Joints on the Thumb, and even one at the wrist. And they mimic the joints a regular (human-shaped) hand has. So yes, it's possible.
RedDragonForce2 so is it still a guantlet then
Watch film theory on RUclips, the joints are only a small part of puzzle. The actual snap still wouldn't won't because of the a)the metal b) coefficients of friction c) some other physics thing
Ruvie I just did one minute after it was uploaded.
That video was absolute bullshit, honestly.
NickTheSickDick Dude... don’t hate.
Young thor is that you?
I can't stop laughing at that Manos pun. So underappreciated.
The snap was entirely for dramatic effect.
There is a type of shrimp that emits jets of water at high velocity suddenly through the air and move their claws along with it to make it appear that they are snapping, could thanos be doing the same thing? We see him make bubbles to starlords guns, could he just be doing it at such a fast rate, maybe using the reality stone, that it appears to be a snap. Could the bubble be released through out space, which is really what causes the dust, bubbles ripping through people at a Ludacris speed, like a deathly bubble gun.
You're thinking of the Pistol Shrimp.
Nate Von Hagen a snap is both a sound, purse clamp, and an action with your fingers. By creating a large enough force between his fingers(he is stronger than the hulk) he could simply create the crackling sound in an air wave without needing palm contact.
The bubbles you're thinking of aren't technically created by the shrimp in question, per se, but actually a secondary result of displaced water rushing back in on itself when a vacuum is created. Thus, Thanos wouldn't be creating bubbles like he did with Star Lord's gun, which are a liquid surrounding a gas, but he could potentially build enough pressure and potential energy up through friction to eventually move so violently that the displacement of air and subsequent vacuum would create a popping bubble effect just like those shrimp, but with the air instead of the water.
If you define a snap as a building of tension and then a release, with that release causing a sound, then I think that shrimp's punching motion more or less counts. After all, if something like a rope snaps, it's the sound of the tension being released that gives the 'snap' its name. In the same vein, I think any sound made by finger motions in a gauntlet that relate to a build of friction and pressure followed by a release and sound would count as a snap.
After all, if you saw a guy do the finger-snappy motion and heard a sound, you'd say he snapped his fingers, right?
Nate Von Hagen
So, to answer your question, let’s assume the bubbles will be 1 centimeter in diameter and weigh 780 micrograms(these are the only available numbers online). We will need to go through both skin and bone for this, so I’ll use the average amount of pressure it takes to pierce/break bone. It takes around 25 psi or 172.369 kilopascals(ignoring angles and a lot of other variables) to cleanly break a bone. Pressure equals force over area(P=F/A). We can put in 172,369 for P(pressure usually uses pascals) and 0.0157 for A(area usually uses meters). We then do 172,369*.0157 to get 2,706.1933 newtons. That gives us an acceleration of 3,469,478.58974359976 kilometers per second. This is 11.572934865971845397 times faster than the speed of light. Using the reality stone, this speed could be achieved. In conclusion, Thanos’ Bubble Gun of Death would be ridiculously deadly and terrifying.

Michael Hunter i don't think the snap actually means anything. Similar to most gestures superheroes do when they use their powers. It's just there for the audience plus let's face it if we were in their place we would do that as well just because it feels right even though we don't need to.
THEZOMBIEDJ12345 I think that the gesture is what focuses in on what is wanting to be done. So some form of action or gesture would still need to be used in order to get the expected outcome
Michael Hunter could be.
Who knows?
I mean personally i still think it doesn't mean anything except for characters like doctor strange or scarlet witch were the gestures actually have an effect versus everything else just being controlled by thought alone.
But right now we really have no way of knowing.
We see him using other powers of the gauntlet by making a fist with fingers up and palm towards himself, so based on that and the fact that he had to break free before using it when they were holding him down trying to rip the gauntlet off, we can assume that there's some physical action that needs to take place. It could probably be anything, not just a snap, but I guess he wanted to snap rather than pose because it's more dramatic.
In the movie he had to close his fist. Presumably that's the only real triggering motion needed to activate it. So it's not the sound produced by a snap, it's not any pressure waves, it's not even the gesture. The gesture is only there for theatricality, what really matters is the middle finger hitting the palm and the thumb closing in which probably close enough to a closed fist to count.
This video taught me how to snap my fingers. So yay!!!! I know have the power to destroy half the life in the universe!!!!!!!!
lol ur not thanos
I never thought Thor would teach me today
But he's thanos and that's all that there is to it
The key difference in my mind between all these examples and the infinity gauntlet in the movies as he points out has full finger metal platings. Assuming strength is an irrelevant factor as both thanks is shown to have impressive physical strength and he also has the power stone so he has basically unlimited strength. The question is then about articulation on the fingers which as you said could be restrictive but let’s assume dwarves who can harness stars to melt metals can make comfortable easy to move finger joints on a glove. This leads to the question of could you generate the right amount of friction between the metal surfaces. Now that issue as I see it also would be a no. According to this paper arxiv.org/pdf/1611.08200.pdf studying the effects of metals structure on their frictional behaviors pure metals tend to have higher friction while alloys tended to be lower. It seems reasonable that the gauntlet is at least in part made of uru as it is the magical god metal the dwarves used but uru is typically a silver color while the gauntlet is clearly golden so even on the scale of metals the gauntlet would have relatively low friction. While you showed most of the sound is not generated directly by friction it is necessary for a snap to be performed and without deforming the metal of the gauntlet which is seen to be an earth shattering feat for metal of this quality it would be impossible to build up a significant amount of friction between fingers
There Kyle you happy? I’m here early I cited sources. If this shows my get super nerd I don’t know why will
Tyler Smith typos...
Tyler Smith did you really just cite a scholarly paper? Because that's pretty cool man. 👍
Noah Gregory thanks. I’m trying man.
Cool video, as usual, but was anyone else distracted by the upside-down book on the shelf?
I noticed that too!
I like how thanos snapped in endgame but all he got was a satisfying sound instead
If the infinity gauntlet is just a piece of an armor kit...where is the rest of the infinity armor? 🤔
Dustin Wrye the ultimate universe it is I believe I think has 2 gauntlet that are more armor like, but thanos had them made to match the armor he already has normally
Man At Arms
But wouldn't the fact that the Infinity Gauntlet has fingers completely surrounded by metal lend itself to supporting the snapping sound? A clink sound would be likely.
The biggest problem with that would be the side to side articulation of the fingers as the rigidness of metal wouldn't allow for the middle to finger to properly contact the thumb, unlike the leather gloves here.
But this could all be mitigated by mystical dwarven metal glove technology that allows bendy joints...
Kyle snapped at 10:01 a purplish gauntlet. He said that was a clang not a snap.. i.e. yes it is that way, but not to him.
Got love it when Thor shows you the physics of snapping your fingers
No, that isn't thor...
_I want the thicc one who fights noobmaster69_
You should do.
"What is a Warframe, and can you make and operate one?"
P.s I love your show. Your amazing.
Ron Galaxy you’re
Bump. But as THE SACRIFICE showed, a warframe is a infested thing with armour xd
Would rock salt really not be as deadly as normal bullets if shot out of a 12 gauge shotgun like in Supernatural the TV show on the CW?
Lead shot is over 5 times more dense than rock salt...so much more leadly when fired from a gun.
Many people have been shot with rock salt and its absolutely proved to be far less deadly than lead shot.
However, a slug of rock salt from a 12 gauge would be a different story.
(Also shotguns fire shells, not bullets)
Broken Wave shotguns do NOT fire shells any more than rifles or handguns fire cartridges in the sense of what comes out of the end of the barrel. If your perspective is saying that the gun fires the entire device that you load into it as a concept, then rifles and handguns dont fire bullets either as mentioned they fire cartridges.
However staying with the convention of just the projectile being fired,
Shotguns actually fire a wide variety of projectiles any of which could if you go by a very general nomenclatural convention, be called 'bullets'.
But if more specificity is your game, then shotguns fire, as mentioned, a wide variety of projectiles. Shot, being usually multiple balls or pellets of some substance that are of a smaller diameter than the bore. Also they can fire flechettes, which are small needle like projectiles usually with some fin like feature that is supposed to help stabilize them in flight. They can shoot flares and in special cases small specially made grenade like rounds. They can also shoot slugs, which are typically single large projectiles of similar diameter to the bore though dimensions and configurations can vary.
There are also sabot or saboted rounds which can be a single or even multiple part round of many different dimensions. These can even be bullets intended to be fired from different caliber weapons such as handguns or rifles. Yes, almost all of these are loaded into the shotgun in , 'shells', but any or all of these could be called bullets correctly in some context. Additionally, there are adapters for shotguns that allow someone to actually load and fire actuall cartridges for rifles or handguns from a shotgun.
And even more additionally,
A 410 bore shotgun can in many cases fire a 45 long colt or even other similar cartridges.
As WELL, there are cartridges for handguns and even rifles that are made to fire some sort of shot like a shotgun.
So there you go. Shotguns CAN fire bullets. From 'shells' or otherwise.
metamorphicorder Dumbass, you really wrote that much crap for me to not read because I said "fire shells"? Obviously what comes out is shot (hence the name) or a slug...not the whole shell.
But the guns use shells, not bullets, which is all I was saying.
You're ridiculous.
When you realize he uses the reality stone to make the snapping sound 😂😂
This reminds me of General Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist
How to Drain Your Dragon 3 movies coming out you should do how deadly toothless or dragens really are
*dragons
*movie's
*out, so you
*"how ... are"
zaryab ali ahmed also Train*
zaryab ali ahmed movie
I want to drain my dragon! Can you teach me?
Psykole dear god lol
how can deadpool survive and heal from decapitation and complete dismemberment and become a whole bodied again man
Can you snap the Infinity Gauntlet?
Thanos: Reality can be whatever I want.
I have spent 35 years of my life not being able to snap my fingers....until now. Now what can I use this new super power for?
Dustin Wrye I actually just learned how to do that too 😂
erase half of the universe
Tony Swatton! The original man at arms!
In the comic, it's obviously a cloth/leather glove, not a metal gauntlet.
Nah, its a single solid sheet of metal molded into a hand shape, Thanos is just so strong he can move around in it like its a fabric.
/s
Kevin Taylor That’s not how normal metal works.
The Zen well, that ain't an ordinary metal
Anonymous Freak good thing we’re talking about the movie
The Zen ya you are right but the reality stone
getting all the stones would cause so much mental trauma but then snapping for any action takes a physical toll. It would mean less emotional or goal oriented individuals would be the best who are well trained. the secondary issue is the effect someone wants on the universe.
Oh snap.
