Hammer corals are a great beginner LPS coral that has been one of the most popular stony corals in the hobby. I've been working on this video for a little while and was lucky enough to get some really nice ones to finish up the shooting. Hope you guys enjoy.
i have a mixed 70gallon reef.... gonio's zoa's acan's blaso's and many more... do it very well.. but i can not keep hammers or frogspawn... so no thnx... NOT beginner corals
Please help with reasons for hammer polyps dying and skin being loose from skeleton.... suddenly after so many months being healthy I loose some of my hammers
I’m new to the reefing hobby and really liked hammers but didn’t want to get one and have it die cus I didn’t know much about it but I just picked one up today and your video made me feel a lot better about buying it and keeping it alive so thanks!👍🏽
I did something even stupider by buying an elegance and a bubble coral only to watch them die (Alkalinity droped while I was away) :( But then a month after fixing my alkalinity issues, I bought a hammer and it's been doing great! So a Hammer coral is a good start.
I got a hammer at my lfs as one of the first three I ever bought. Haven’t been in the hobby long even from a fish tank stand point let alone a reef tank, and I think it’s pretty happy with what I’ve been doing.
Heed my lesson. A $4 Peppermint Shrimp ate a $30 aussie hammerhead coral down to the shell. . Now they are sump cleaner shrimp. Update: what was left came back quickly & is filling back in. ps: They seem to like slightly dirty water & so does algae😒
Just got my first hammer coral 2day, as well as some zoa's and a nem... Love the the hammer tho looks really good. Great video and info bud, keep it up... 👍🏾
Love the video... very informative and gorgeous video footage. I find that euphyllia can also be sensitive to water nutrient levels. Stripping out too much phosphate and nitrate tends to make the polyps shorten and shrivel. I generally am careful with overskimming and using GFO on aquariums with big euphyllia populations. Happy reefing!
Great video! I’ve gotten a purple tip hammer to eat with a lot of success. I thaw out mysis in a little bit of saltwater in a small Tupperware container then pinch the shrimp with my finger tips and manually put it in the tank to feed fish. I kill the flow then use the water with the tiny concentrated shrimp particles and target feed my coral with it, sometimes I’ll mix in a little bit of reed roids, I’ve had great success and I figure it’s easier for the coral to digest since the pieces are so tiny, I’ve had great success from feeding this to Zoas to lps to SPS. Maybe you can try it and get back to me with your opinion, hopefully it helps!
Thanks for yet another amazing video, Than! I have a hammer (that came from you). I have noticed that it loves to eat pellet food designed for omnivorous fish, gobbles them right up! I’ll email you a video if you’d like.
I've had a hammer coral for almost a year and it's been doing great! The last week and a half though it's been retracted and not looking happy. The only thing i can see that is different is that it clearly has two heads versus before when it had one head when it was a tiny frag. It hasn't melted away, just been looking unhappy for the last week or two. Water is great. Nitrates are at or near zero. Temp at 78 deg. F. Salinity 1.26.etc. Would like your input, sir! Love the videos, keep them up!
Just heard the end of the video and i tried a water change and i replaced my carbon filter with a new Chemi Pure Blue media about 4 days ago and it's still in the same state. I don't see signs of brown jelly, or flat worms. The only difference is the very visible new head. When it splits will it be retracted for a while until it recovers from the splitting?
I ran across some hammers that had been in St. Jude children hospital. They were humongous l, I mean big, colossal, gigantic! There aquarium cracked and they sold all of the coral for very cheap. I had hammers with long white stems that filled my tank. We’ll leave it up to me, I poured salt directly in my reef tank and all the flesh bailed out. I’ve been in the hobby barely over a year and I swear I’ve some costly mistakes. Way over $5k easily… but I have learned from those mistakes and I love our hobby🪸
I have a question. What can i do to encourage my hammer to fully open up. I’ve tried moving on the middle section of the tank, the top, the bottom. I’ve also tried adjusting the light and flow and still not opening up, it’s only been a few days since i got it any tips?
There is another pest that is super rare (i had them) euphyllia eating flatworms. brutal on the corals, and very tough to get rid of in euphyllia dominate tanks.
I’m having a really hard time finding a place for these guys. The only time they extend is if my powerheads are completely turned off. Bit of a problem seeing as I have a mixed reef with SPS. Any suggestions because they are looking terrible right now...
You mentioned running activated carbon towards the end of the video to combat potential issues. Do you always run carbon in your tanks, or just when you notice something that would warrant it?
We run carbon infrequently but that is mainly because our systems are very large and the cost of maintaining large carbon filters in both material and labor would be a little excessive. Plenty of hobbyists run carbon 24/7 on their aquariums and it too is fine.
I just love your channel. I bought a green and purple hammer. It’sin my quarantine tank. That tank has fully controllable fluval marine led. I want to move it to my display tank which is a coralife bio cube. My concern is, is the light too bright? I cannot remove the hood to add another light because I have jumping fish thanks in advance you have encouraged me to start keeping coral.
Michelle irby get a better light, stock lighting for the biocube isn’t the best. Just make a screen lid there are plenty of great tutorials on RUclips!
Eugene Barthmallow thank you I’m working on it any suggestions? I’m doing soft and LPS frog Spain Xenia Kenya tree Duncan and another I would like amounted one on an arm don’t worry though my quarantined tank has an amazing Fluval which is fully programmable
Eugene Barthmallow Thank you when I read the stock par was 30-50 I knew I would have to change it. i’m planning on removing the hood right now my quarantine tank has an amazing light I’m trying to figure out which light is best for my display tank I want something on an arm which will mount to the back of the tank I am getting a Duncan frog Spaun Xenia Kenya tree chalice and aussie war I am moving into a 90 gal bow front but it must mature first
Polyp bailout can happen if the coral is really unhappy with something. It is not too common, but does occur. I would check water chemistry, especially nitrates.
You are super informative but to say a clownfish 'hosts' a coral is wrong. Or a clownfish to host anything other than parasites etc. The coral is the host to the clownfish. When you invite people to your home for dinner are they being the host to you?
Ash Greninja MLG pro gamer yes they are in the lps group, dosing is only necesary case by case, testing your water for calcium and kh is important, if you see either droping in count then dosing is necesary to keep the levels stable.. calcium and alk is used mostly when coral is growing

Love the resolution and fps, it could be interesting to have some footage in "their element" real environnment, ... kinda easier say then done ;)
Tidal Gardens any updates on dosing phyto etc for nps corals?

I enjoyed this a lot.
Thank you!
These are such a staple of saltwater aquariums that my mom said her dad had one in their aquariums in the late 60's and early 70's.
Tidal gardens is so informative it’s incredible, any coral I’ve been reading on and wait to listen to a informative video about it they’ve got it!
You've got a real soothing voice my brotha.
Does anyone else feel like he sounds like Tom Green? Maybe it's just me. Lol
Sounds like the guy who makes the Casually Explained series
sleep to it
It’s relaxing hearing him narrate and watching shots of beautiful corals 😂

How's the reefing going 6 years later ?
I got a hammer at my lfs as one of the first three I ever bought. Haven’t been in the hobby long even from a fish tank stand point let alone a reef tank, and I think it’s pretty happy with what I’ve been doing.
Is it still thriving?
Thanks once again for your videos. I enjoy every minute of it! Very good basic information that's useable.
Be blessed.
Your voice is so soothing. I don’t even own a salt water tank nor am I interested in owning one but your voice keeps me around XD
Legend has it, Than is still searching for that bright yellow hammer to this day.
Glad I found this video. Thank you for the information.
Congratulations amazing videos 🎉
Thank you!!
Excellent tutorial and very well explained. Thank you very much!Love your videos.

Damn is that normal or was he starving maybe? I have some peppermint in my nano with only softies but was gonna add some to my LPS tank
I will never put peppermint shrimp in a tank again.
ONE OF MY FAVOURITE CHANNELS!
Fell asleep after listening to your voice.
I play this video on TV, super relaxing
Great video ! Mesmerising
Great video Than! Awesome footage and outstanding info as usual!

Yep have one of those yellow hammers...just love it

Did it recover? Hows it doing now if you still have it?
Dose magnese. It's an ore in the ocean
Omg love listening to you....fill me with knowledge
Nice video
Great footage great info! Keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
Can you do a video on cutting wall hammers ?
my favorite coral for sure
I’m researching for my 5th coral, I’m highly considering a hammer coral!
i always save a small frag of a coral that i really love if i have to sell the colony.
I ran across some hammers that had been in St. Jude children hospital. They were humongous l, I mean big, colossal, gigantic!
There aquarium cracked and they sold all of the coral for very cheap. I had hammers with long white stems that filled my tank.

Great info brother, euphillia's are my absolute favorite corals followed by acans and chalice. Lps in general lol.
What kind of idiot gave an informational video a thumbs down ? Lol People kill me..... Nice job Than ;)
Simps.
Awesome video 👊👍

Hammers and Euphelias are some of my absolute favorite corals Than!! great video
Great stuff man.
Great info than awesome videographer
Nice video Than. Love me some corals in 4k
Great video. Very informative.
Great video love ur channel!
So do I only have to worry about sweepers “downstream” so to speak? What about on the aquascape below?
Awesome video Than
I have a small single head frag that hasn't grown at all. Everything else in the tank is doing great.
Helped me identify what I saw at the aquarium. I thought at first it was a kind of anemone but none of them fit. Thanks!
I bought a fluro yellow the other day 😁🤘
Unique corals has a golden branching hammer for sale right now on ebay
I love hammers and torches. Some great info passed 0n, thanks Than
There is another pest that is super rare (i had them) euphyllia eating flatworms. brutal on the corals, and very tough to get rid of in euphyllia dominate tanks.
You da man, Than!
I have hammer corals that doesn’t open fully. What’s the water setting that’s good ?
do hammers retract at night
Yes
Are you going to the frag swap in North Canton this July?... Great video also..
I’m having a really hard time finding a place for these guys. The only time they extend is if my powerheads are completely turned off. Bit of a problem seeing as I have a mixed reef with SPS. Any suggestions because they are looking terrible right now...
How does brown jelly occur to begin with?
I basically just do water changes every 2 weeks and about 150 to 200 par bright and healthy
I have had my hammer for over 6 months now and little by little im loosimg hammers in my tank i been dping water changes but only malrs things worse.
You mentioned running activated carbon towards the end of the video to combat potential issues. Do you always run carbon in your tanks, or just when you notice something that would warrant it?

@@tidalgardens great info yet again! Love your channel and the great, helpful information.

my wall hammer is receding a little bit and it shows a small amount of skeleton. should i move it to even lower flow?
Dose magnese it's an ore in ocean. Not magnesium btw
Milehighreefer posted a vid about some neon yellow. Hammers
Hello I was wondering is 128 par ok for hammer corals
Any ideas why sometimes my hammer would detach from the skeletons even though they look healthy? And it is not due to too much flow?
Polyp bailout can happen if the coral is really unhappy with something. It is not too common, but does occur. I would check water chemistry, especially nitrates.
Thanks for the reply: I checked the parameters nitrates and ammonia and others seem to be low and almost zero, any other advice please?
Trying to get mine to open
is the brown jelly disease contagious amongst other euphyllia in the tank??
I am really not sure. It typically kills so far that I don't notice it spread to another coral.
You are super informative but to say a clownfish 'hosts' a coral is wrong. Or a clownfish to host anything other than parasites etc. The coral is the host to the clownfish. When you invite people to your home for dinner are they being the host to you?
You showed some hammer corals that basically look like torches. How can one tell them apart from torch corals?
darkwing shorter tentacles
I call them brains
where to put hammer coral over sand bed are high?
Thanks Than, I was hoping you will make a clip about hammers :)
#tidalgardens, maybe this gold hammer you're fondly speaking of, was actually a Fimbriaphyllia baliensis (ruclips.net/video/GDfseZ1xyM4/видео.html)?
Can you talk about disease and what not?
Are hammer corals lps? Also would i need to dose for a lps and softie reef tank only?
Ash Greninja MLG pro gamer yes they are in the lps group, dosing is only necesary case by case, testing your water for calcium and kh is important, if you see either droping in count then dosing is necesary to keep the levels stable.. calcium and alk is used mostly when coral is growing
Ash Greninja MLG pro gamer for softies foucus on testing ph(8.2), kh(10-14), calcium(420-460), magnessium(1350)
"I see thousands of hammers a year"😂🤣
Out of nowhere all my hammers and frogspawn died and I’d had them for a year to a year and a half.
I like frogspawn better than hammer
my clowns are hosting in my GSP.. so yeah its true they host in the weirdest of things..
My clownfish like to hide in a skull. 💀
