Montipora Coral Care Tips

- Montipora are arguably the second most popular small polyp stony coral behind Acropora. This is for good reason. Montipora possess both diverse color variations as well as a multitude of growth forms. The care tips we will go over in this video are intended to provide a baseline that will give hobbyists the best chance for success. They may be overkill for the hardier species of Montipora while the more delicate specimens may require additional TLC to keep them healthy.

What do you guys think about Montipora? Do you have any in your tanks?
Do they encrust around an sps colony? Or will the sps kill it
Tidal Gardens I have 7 from plating, encrusted and digis branching
@@jnava121 I honestly think it depends on the type of monitopora vs the type of SPS
Tidal Gardens Love them. Like these now better than Acropora, but I’m a newb.
Great vid as always 👌 I have a green plating & an orange, Ive had the green in multiple tanks & it is not phased by higher nitrate like my Acropora. The green plating seems almost as hardy as an lps for me 👍
For those of you who are new to reef keeping or intermediate. You should listen to this video over and over. There is a TON of great info in this video on corals in general. The parameters that Than gives here are almost perfect in my experience. One of the most important things to remember, don't panic and over feed corals. Your corals will live a long time and not starve. It's better to be careful when feeding than to feed too much. Fantastic video Than!
Like my 3rd time digesting this information!
20 minutes of Than's voice is better than a day at the spa.
I might have missed it but I think placement is super important. A beginner is likely to plop one down at the top of their reef, a big mistake ime. Nearly on the substrate is best to let them grow out without shading out huge portions of a reef.
Is it just me ? But I could listen to him all day long !!! I even find myself watching live coral sales even tho I’m in the UK 😂😂😂
He would make a good hypnotist
Love the longer, more in-depth, Genera vids u have been doing lately. As per usual the camera work is ...WOW!! Thanks
Favorite reef tank RUclips videos. Every aspect is done so well, keep it up. Gonna have you repay tidal gardens with an order I guess, feel like I owe you guys lol
Thank you! Glad Care videos are back.
My favorite is Montipora Confusa. It grows plates with digi-like branches.
The rainbow Monti is also pretty sweet! Mine took-off slow, and then started spreading and displaying all sorts of colorful undertones.
Montis have been tough for me. I went on a two week vacation and had an ATO issue. My salinity dropped to 1.020. My friend corrected it by dumping a bunch of salt into my tank. My plating monti was bleached. I thought it had died. When I was about to toss it weeks later; I noticed color coming back. It probably took 4-5 months to color up; but it came back.
This is some of the best reef content out there. Helped me a lot.
Fantastic video quality with great info. Keep em coming!
Hands down one of my favorite informational videos you’ve ever made. Thank you Than, for all that you do!!
Info packed and beautiful as always. Cheers Than.
More wonderful long videos with stunning footage and great information!
It's crazy you were able to get this out with everything else that's going on. Also, those chemical test shots were magic! Great work Than.
Excellent video as always. I was starting to miss your soft soothing voice.
This video has so much incredible footage, Than. Thank you for creating and sharing it. ❤️
Yay! I can't wait to sit down tonight and watch it properly - fell like I've been waiting for this for ages
Incredible Than! The imagery in this is mindblowing and the info will be SUPER helpful. Starting out I went straight to acros (and a couple of other SPS - a Stylocoenellia (sic?) and a pachyseris but I have always loved Montis - I think as I just have my QT tank and haven't done my build that I feel like they may grow too much and I can always get the types I want.
Generally I think Montis are way underrated and just as good as acros - and in many ways better - they often grow faster and the forms seem to be more diverse.
Another great video. As someone who is relatively new to keeping a marine tank you sharing your knowledge is invaluable. Thanks again from Sydney Australia
Great stuff!! Very thorough as always! Thanks Than!
Best in-depth coral video ever! I’ll keep coming back for more. New to the hobby, my LPS is looking good and I’m wanting to step up. This answered literally everything I was wanting to know. Huge thanks👍
I love the grafted setosa variety myself! Monti's are a MUST in a reef tank. They add so much character.
Than mate- your videos are class. They are so informative! Thanks so much!!!
Ha awesome! Did you just make the video I’ve been looking for for the past two days. Just added my first monticap!
🤘🏾
Love this video... very informative. Thanks 😃👍🏼
Great video as always. Pictures are always the best in Than’s videos. Great info. My personal experience is that montipora and many chalices like elevated Magnesium. I have found faster growth at 1390-1400.
Love the vids! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻
Excellent Video!!
Omg...you are extremely knowledgeable about these i love this video...im a subscriber for life I love your in depth descriptions of corals and how the live.....thank you so much...I will be following this channel alot....
Just picked up my first monti frag yesterday! So excited to watch it grow 🥰
Love the Digitata montipora does well for me...nice video 👍
Your SPOTLIGHT sessions are great thanks
Thank you for all the information in this video!
Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful coral!
Magnifique, BRAVO !!! 👏👏👏
All around great video :)
Thank you, just bought my first frag
Excelente vídeo, muy buena información
Than is the man. Was missing his soft calm voice 💓
Nothing like a TG coral spotlight. Than’s the man.
Such great information, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Top information 🙏👍
Excellent presentation ..massive thnak you , wish you were based in London
Great video Than. I got rid of a rather large plague of month eating nudies with simple reefdip and a toothbrush. It took probably 6 dips, a bit of time and a lot of observation, but never came back. That was 2 years ago 'touches wood'
Liked this video,very informative👍
Adding wrasse like a six line did it for me
I think I have every flavor of monti from Tidal Gardens 👍🏾👍🏾
Super cools shots on the ME nudibranchs
Thank you for this video
My pleasure
Great video! Lots of knowledge. Sorry for me I can’t keep any monti’s alive in my tank 🤦♂️
A six line wrasse cleaned up my nudibrachs!
Great video as always. I have Monti black bugs! What is the best way to get rid of them on encrusting Monti? Other than a six line. Thanks 🙂
Awesome video man. But you forgot to mention about Po4 and No3
regarding nudibranches... i had a terrible fight with them for almost a year of dipping and brushing ....
Eventually I threw away alle the affected corals / coralparts and introduced a yellow coris and green wrasse. In a few weeks i didn't see any critter anymore...
May be just by chance, but I had a fight with montipora eating nudibranqs for months, and one day that I introduced lysmatas seticaudatas for the aiptasias, the nudibranqs disappeared together with the aiptasias. Are these shrimps eating also nudibranqs? I never heard about it, but to me it seems like this. Great video as always, by the way!
I personally love the encrusting and plating varieties, but honestly they're all very nice. I'm curious though, what fish would you say would be most beneficial to the encrusting varieties in a fluval 13.5g evo? I just picked one up and my intent is to make it a montipora dominant system, but wasn't really planning on adding fish if possible. Especially in such a small environment. Definitely not looking at clowns
I just received one as a freebie in an online purchase so I had to quickly find a video to find info
I spotted @ricosaquarium ! whats the difference between monti caps or non "caps"?
@Tidal Gardens what is the montipora species at 4:35 and do you all have it for sale?
🔥👊👍
I beat the Nudibracch by stocking with all kinds of wrasses that i liked, fit my tank and my retailer had in stock. The Montis got very damaged and some nearly died, but after a around 3 weeks the wrasses started doing thier job and the montis recoverd. But i had to frag all the Montis to make them look good again, i will never every set up a tank again without some wrasses and other pest-eating fish.
having them before pests appear is better
5:13 is that a type of montipora on the right and if it is what is its name
But you didn't talk about phos&No3
All the best 👍
Any coral that don’t release toxic pore or not toxic ?
Recently purchased my first orange monti. It’s higher in the water column and doing well but I just noticed some algae forming on it. What should I do just move it lower?
Give it a gentle blast with a turkey baster to blast the algae growth off. You might not have enough flow on them.
How do you know your montipora cap is happy?
What is the specific gravity you keep the reef tanks in the tidal garden??? Thank you for answr me
1.026 normally
@@tidalgardens do you think t8 led runs a soft tank? My reef has 360liters and i put 3 blue and 1 purple.
This might be a silly question but...can you take the base of from the frag and glue the coral directly on the rock or is it dangerous for the coral?
You can, but often times the coral comes off.
@@tidalgardens ok. Thank you
Not just beginners also if you a busy life and family's
Will forest fire digitata tolerate being touched by zoanthids?
i just got a Montipora Capricornis. When I got it home I noticed a little white tiny spot at the tip of one of the bumps. I've been watching it, I thought bleaching was accruing. Today day 3 I noticed a tiny little white thing moving around from the center of the bump is this normal ? Do they have tentacles? Please help . Panic mode. LOL.
it might be a montipora eating nudibranch, cuz those generally fit the description.
@@leodai7167 ty I do appreciate your response however that was a very long time ago I actually took that montipora back to the shop and traded it for a chalice
Was that Rico's Beast I saw in this Video
who would dare dislike a than video
I’m dosing tropic Marin all in one reef elements at the moment and only have soft corals, will this dosing be enough for sps coral like this one?
I was watching a cool farm from Florida that used a pesticide from home depot to dip can't remember the name of the channel sorry
?????????Can you do a video on all encrusting corals??????
Of course this is highly anecdotal but I had to deal with those nudies.
I tried everything with no success but after I bought a Canthigaster Valentini,
The situation changed in a few days.
After 3 or 4 days I didn’t see any nudies anymore and all! my monties recovered quickly.
Maybe they nipple on some acans or eat your shrimp.
I've never owned one of those. That is very interesting!
@@tidalgardens and I have him since about 9 months without any nudies at all or any other pests, while adding monties and other corals…
I can't keep Montipora alive :( I can keep Acropora though

Revive for nudibranchi Adulti .. lysmata quekenthaly e hexantenia
I had an issue with the montipora nudibranchs when I added some “safe coral”. They were destroying my monti.
I successfully killed them all with a high powered laser. I had to wait up at night over the course of 2-3 weeks watching for new spots that were being eaten.
However, when I did find them it was EASY to turn that laser on and literally make them explode.
After only a few nights of checking and killing them I haven’t had any issues again. That was about 2-3 months ago. I did buy a specific laser and would gladly show which one I use. I also have a video on my channel of using them on Asternia starfish.
Hope this helps some of you!
Melanarus wrasse for monti eating nudi's. Pro tips. :)
Is there a type of fish that eats those nudie Bronx? Sorry, I don't know how that is spelt. 😆
The Monti Snails killed every Montipora in my tank…
no way to dip if encrusted on rocks, and in an established system..unfortunately.
I can’t even keep mush alive imagine sps 💀
6 mins into the video and already had 4 lots of ads come on
I'm 8 minutes in and none so far
Not enough Montipora specific info in this video, just my view
And dramatically cut off any space which is left🙈...😡☺️
Wrasse will eat them
