There are still a lot of people that don’t know Volvo is owned by a Chinese company, (Zhejiang Geely) in a $1.8 billion ownership deal, that was closed in the fall of 2010.
Nonetheless, they have promised to make sure, (as a matter of pride) that the integrity of assembly, dexterity, automotive science and craftsmanship will match or be better than what the other factories build; and be congruent with the Swedish manufacturer’s ethos of excellent.
China has huge industrial capabilities and a highly skilled workeforce. People generally assume China= Low quality, and they couldn’t be more wrong.
I am a big fan of the Volvo EX30. Although not perfect, it is still a worthy contender for my next EV adventure. Definitely now up there on my shortlist. 📝 💯

I share your approval of lithium iron phosphate batteries and was surprised you didn’t dwell more on the extra 2000+ cycle lives this for me is as notable as the increased safety

Interesting comparison to the Jazz. I have a Honda Fit (the North American Jazz), which unfortunately Honda no longer brings in. Ours is now 10 years old. Will wait and see what price they are in Canada when they bring it in here (interestingly our Fit was built in China).

I'm waiting quietly fir the EX30 to be in the UK and open for test drives... As I think that it offers great looks and performance in a small and affordable package.

LFP has pros and cons compared to NMC and related tertiary chemistries. Yes, LFP is safer, can be cycled more, can be charged routinely to 100% SoC, but its nominal voltage is 3.2 V vs 3.7 V of NMC, so has lower energy content and can weight more for a given range. For shorter range cars, LFP and NMC packs can have equivalent weight due to less cooling requirements, though you are talking effective real world range under 250 miles in an efficient car. LFP costs less than NMC but that may be related to another problem for LFP now is that all cells are (essentially) made in China, which can be considered a disadvantage due to geopolitical reasons / tariffs, etc.
My 2017 e-Golf has NMC cells and is very safe, but since the car has no cooling system, it is not a road-tripping car, like the Leaf. Still, I easily put 15,000 miles a year on the e-Golf for commuting.

My wife is about to become a Volvo fleet customer, once my current car contract ends I’ll be angling for her to add me to her fleet in an EX30 🤞
Volvo’s have had factories outside Sweden for decades, not sure why that is an issue now. It isn’t what makes them a Volvo

    • @TheChargeShow

I hope you get the EX30. I think about 2 thirds of Volvo EV orders on the books at the moment are for the EX30. That's what I was told. I believe it's to do with the value that you get for the money compared to the other models. More car for the money. Let me know how you go with your angling :) I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

@@TheChargeShow I’m not surprised, the other Volvo EVs are too expensive for what they are. It’ll be 2.5 years until I can change, so plenty of time for pester power

Exactly. What makes them a Volvo is where and how they are spec'd. That's in Sweden for the most part.

I went to see a pre-production EX30 in London a few weeks ago as having seen many online reviews it appeared to satisfy my requirements in an EV. It looks as good in the metal and the only reservation I have is that rear seat legroom is very tight. I was still keen however but then I saw the new Smart #1. Not so keen on the looks but it’s built on the same Geely platform as the EX30 so has the same motor/power options but as a package, in my opinion, it’s far more interesting, offers a lot more practicality, and is cheaper too. Haven’t actually seen one yet but I’d probably choose it over the Volvo. Only slight issue is that the Volvo software is based on Google whereas the Smart is Geely’s own proprietary set up. I’d much prefer Google as it’s integrated into so many other applications and I’d have more confidence in its continued development.

Hi Robert, thanks for the comment. You raise some great points. I also prefer the Google platform. It's a tough one isn't it, the EX30 or the Smart, I would perhaps look at the resale values, or really get into the nitty gritty like you say, go and sit in one and ask for a drive before parting with cash, if you decide on one, please let me know which you end up going for. Are the Volvo XC40 and C40 popular in London? I know with the ULEZ expansion, lots of people have been doing their research on different vehicles they could have to drive into London. Writing this has made me want to hurry up and get back to the UK now to see some family. I haven't been back for 3 years from Brisbane. I'm due to spend time over winter in Europe travelling around to make up for lost time during the pandemic. For a while when Australia opened up the borders for travel, the flights were insanely expensive but now they're back to normal I believe.

Hi, I don't live in London and I don't drive there often either. Volvo are taking their pre-production EX30 on a tour of the UK and I booked a viewing when it was at the Brent Cross Shopping Centre in London because that was the closest of the listed venues to my home in Essex. I've just (last week) sold my Volvo XC60 diesel (got a stonking price for it as used car values are still very strong here in the UK) and have banked the money towards an electric car that I'll not buy for another year. In the meantime I have another car I can use. I wanted to downsize from the XC60 and go electric and the EX30 is about the right size for my future needs. The choice in EV's is improving rapidly now it seems and I'm not in a rush, plus, at last, manufacturers are starting to offer better prices on them. I looked at the new Kia Niro too, which is also an excellent package, but the style wasn't to my liking.@@TheChargeShow

I read people say such and such are built on the same platform but cars built on the same platform don't definitely feel and drive the same way. Yes, the cars will have the same performance. But the steering feel, suspension tuning, body structure, materials and ergonomics, and a whole lot more may differ significantly between the Smart (Mercedes) approach and the Volvo approach.

Not sure what they mean by $70k, but it's clearly $60k.

Its EX30 not XC30. The 0-60 times of 3.4 seconds would make it the cheapest quickest EV for the acceleration time. Underneath it sits cheaper MG 4 X power 3.8 seconds

No, the design is not stunning - it is fine. Many other vehicles are better looking - for example, every Alfa, most Mercedes, some Fords (new European Explorer is great). However, the price of the EX30 is stunning. And the acceleration is fantastic.
