i was surprised by this title. very counter-intuitive to call you a BYD hater. nowadays the only people thinking Chinese cars are crap are people who have never seen a Chinese car.

I'm Australian, and older, the Chinese cars we get hear now, especially the EVs are amazing and more than cost competitive. And to be frank nearly all the cars that sell in numbers here now are made in China despite what brand is stuck on them. As we no longer have local manufacturers its to our advantage for wait times and parts because it's a lot closer than EU or America.
No most cars sold in australia are made in Thailand followed by Japan
I could say the same about Zeekr, Nio, Xpeng... I totally agree. Quality of Chinese cars have gone a long way. Owner of a BYD and a Xpeng here
I’m old enough to remember when Japanese cars first hit the Australian market. They were thought of as being cheap, poorly made copies of English cars. Of course there was also the “don’t forget the war” factor. But now as you say Toyotas and Hondas are accepted some of the best made cars around. My nearly 10 year old Jazz is evidence of that. I expect Chinese cars will will win over the average consumer too and probably quicker than the Japanese did because the quality is already there.
That's awesome. So when the Toyota Corolla came out in Australia, people thought it was a cheap copy of something else. I didn't know that. The Toyotas from the early 2000s are seen as bulletproof cars if you service them. I literally sat at traffic lights last year in and around the East coast of Australia and counted around me multiple Toyotas from the 90's. Thanks for the comment Chris. :)
As was I, bought a Japanese car in the early 80's and everyone laughed at me, peer pressure made me buy another Holden that fell apart in under a decade

But after continuing invest in quality control, Germany overtake Britain by the end of 19 century. Same thing happened towards Japanese product in the 1960s. Japan sent a lot of spy to American to buy (steal) American technology, within 30 years, Japanese product change their imagine from American knock off to best quality in the world. History always repeat itself.

The global politics are amusing, because we just saw Modi with Putin, and nobody's freaking out over India, despite India doing all sorts of call center and software work for Western companies.

I am living in Thailand, where (unfortunately) Chinese EVS ate still only the affordable option. I am driving a Dolphin since 10 months (25,000 km) and we also bought an Atto 3. I am very impressed by the quality. We also have a very good dealer network and the prices are going down. The only problem is their ADAS, which is still quite quirky (phantom braking). The infotainment is not the best, but BYD has made quite good updates.
BYD also have just opened a new factory in Thailand.
That's awesome that you have a Dolphin. How do you find the Air Conditioning in the hot days, are you happy with it? I have heard about the ADAS issues. It's a pain, even for MG4 owners.
@TheChargeShow I'm in Malaysia, just south of Thailand and just as hot and as humid. I have an Atto 3. The air- cond is kinda okayish. Not great, but not terrible either. TBH, it performance depends pretty much on the insulations and the tinting you have on your car.

Have never seen You for a BYD hater. In my opinjon -- my Seal is as good as any Tesla. Model Y or 3. Just that personally I prefer Seal -- so I did buy one. Same apply to Atto 3. Love it. Both vehicles great build quality. Prefer Seal for its bigger battery and range. Did drive Atto 3 for 40K before Seal.
Hey Adam, thanks for the comment. I agree, the Seal is stunning, and one of my favourite cars when it's painted in Black. I did a 4k close up video of one in Black. I know it's pretty banal to say that it was stunning, but it really was. They drive amazing too. I ended up getting a Dolphin after a long period of painful debate. The Dolphin is more nimble which I really like. Although the Seal is super nice, I just didn't want a saloon. How did you go finding a new owner for the Atto?
@@TheChargeShow HI Ben! Trade-in, through BYD car dealer in Adelaide. The dealer took my Atto 3 as a trade-in when buying my new Seal.. The easy way for me.. And if only I could enlarge my Seals battery? I'm still hoping that one day I can? If only I could live long enough? For most of my AU life (and that was 42 years) I used to drive the Falcon station wagon. No wonder then -- Seal is not too large for me today! And I always did drive white cars. My Seal is white too. Black might be good in the UK? Greetings Ben.
Hey Adam, awesome. How are you finding the Seal? Better or worse than the Atto? I would imagine that the Black ones would get a bit extra hot in Australia, but I don't mind here in cold climates. When I was in Australia, it was definitely something I considered. I have to make a trip back to Australia soon to fix up my house there. Very soon because the weather is nice there at the moment. I live in the US and I am pretty sure that I will never see a Chinese made car in the U.S. in my lifetime. Our government is determined to ban all Chinese made high-tech products in the country. So, the only way I can get tech updates is through these types of videos (until the day the U.S. government considered these videos to be a "national security threat" and ban all these channels). : ((
Chinese products improve so fast that some people still haven't catch up.. inertia?

@@TheChargeShow They pretend to be 'pro-BYD' and make irrational comments to actually deter you from making future videos (or at least unbiased videos) about BYD, a typical concern troIIing tactic...You can find very similar things happening in those CN traveling videos... The last thing they want is unbiased information being spread and heard, because it would be much easier to discredit you and your channel if you cease being impartial.

I never thought that you were a BYD hater and thought that you had a love affair with the Seagull.
The Seagull is a bit too small for me and think that the Dolphin would be more appropriate. However, I am waiting for the upgraded Dolphin to arrive before making a decision.
Hey Catherine, I do have a soft spot for the Seagull :) The Dolphin is amazing. I was at the launch in Australia last year. One of the best nights of 2023, apart from vomiting up the Churros that I had with the wine. It was all free. :) When you say you are waiting for the upgraded version, do you mean the sporty one or the genuinely upgraded version, or one with the v2 battery? I'm sure you'll love it, i've got one :)
@@TheChargeShow Several months ago there were reports from Australia of an upgraded ATTO 3 with a larger screens and better tyres. On the 9th of July, The Electric Viking reported on an upgraded Dolphin with the video titled "NEW 2025 BYD Dolphin gets more range and NO price increase".
The EVs Queen has been reporting on it since the 8th of July.
I am a pride owner of a Atto3. Excellent quality at an excellent price. Supper.

Chinese cars from what I have seen are very affordable and quality is just as good if not better than the other cars not made in China

Nah you are not a hater. Comparisons are important and yours was fair and balanced. Either car is likely good for owning and hopefully more like them to come. You are a lot more impartial than certain other Viking like Aussie youtubers who are having conniptions about how popular the Inster is in comments. Lol

I recently reviewed a BYD Seal. My goodness that car impressed me more than what I had expected. I used to despise Chinese cars during the days of Chery QQ or Great Wall Wingle, but last year my friend bought an Omoda 5 Turbo. I was shocked by just how robust and well-built it is, considering it was from Chery. Moreover the dealer experience was excellent too, so that was the point where Chinese cars become a lot more convincing in my eyes.
Yeah, the BYD Seal is stunning. I almost ordered a Black one, but I really wanted a Dolphin instead. But in Black they look amazing.
I was asked by Omoda to give them a sound bike for them to use in their videos. They're pretty nice aren't they, for the money. I wouldn't say it's as good as MG but pretty decent. What did you think to the MG 4?

Cars be it the ICE, Hybrid, EV, Petrol/Diesel, SUV, Hatchback, Saloon, Coupe, Estate - the list goes on...
Horses for courses - thank goodness there are various options or we'd all be driving round in the same grey boxes on wheels
ICE Vs EV Vs Hybrid - it's like the Oven Vs Microwave Vs Air-Fryer
Microwaves are brilliant for ready-meals, warming baked beans, defrosting & reheating stuff
Air-Fryers are also great for quickly cooking chips, chicken pieces, sausages etc...
But despite all this, you are going to cook a roast dinner, especially Christmas dinner in the regular oven
(That should explain the "Horses for courses" regarding where EV's fit in)
Also thankfully within these groups, there are plenty of options from makes, models & options
Seagull's 0-60 of around 11 secs is about right for running around town,
Doesn't need to be 7.5 secs 0-60 like some EV's do & even more insane quickness on twin motor EV's
You don't need it to be THAT quick off the line - still quicker than the average run around
and quicker than say a base Sandero or other low priced car
Around 11 secs, maybe 10 is more than enough to run around & still has a bit of welly if needed
0-60 of 13.5 is a little more sluggish & where a number of cheap runaround ICE vehicles sit at
Just under 10 is a bit more lively I'll agree, but when you get into the 7 sec bracket, that's quickness like performance cars begin at & really do you need that much torque & acceleration just to runaround in ???
Of course all of this is subjective, various people will have a different take on all this
But though many other lower end price EV's may have some features/figures beating the Seagull...
To me, it seems to tick most of the boxes we need in a car - second EV car mind
Well actually, 3rd - we kept an old diesel coz it is a lovely car to take on the occasional long motorway journey
Never use it around town - (just outside ULEZ, so won't/can't use it most of the time)

Like your videos, calm objective and truthful. Unfortunately a difficult position in today toxic geo-political environment. Keep up the good work, the world can use more of your contents.
BYD is focused on growth and profit unlike some EV makers who are wasting billions on the CEOs pet projects that deliver zero profit. BYD doesn't even build concept cars, they develop fresh product in an agile method and get it to market while it still matters. No matter what you think of the cars they are making all the right moves.

Let's put it this way, BYD is in the stages of probably what Toyota was in the late 70s, by the 80s, Toyota became a real threat. You are reporting what is happening , you get hate from both sides. I still remember 5 years ago i made a comment about the rise of Chinese EV on a channel of Tesla fans, and they call me all sorts of names. There are still channels that are like this who are die hard fans of Tesla, i bet before 2030, it will be the dominant player of the EV world just like what I remember Toyota was like in the 80s

I would like byd more if they had a stronger focus on rwd, lighter (magnesium alloy large casting?), battery cooling between the cells rather than the thin side only. Perhaps the motors are inneficient because they have good aerodynamics and only ok efficiency. The door handles on the seal scare me because i have heard of an accident where someone burned because onlookers could not open the door due to no handle. All that said they are still undercutting tesla on price by around 5-10% in australia but with further tesla price cuts they dont stand a chance. Tesla just needs intrument cluster, door frames, improved mvh and a non glass roof on the dual gigacasting model y and they have every other company beat for price, comfort and eficiency. For instance compare german tesla model y with byd battery to seal u and their charging speeds. Also we only get 7kw ac charging on byd in aus.
That's interesting you mention the battery cell cooling. The new V2 battery from BYD comes with cooling between the cells, and also the new CATL battery does. I think that it's a fantastic upgrade for a healthier pack. It's rare that someone mentions that sort of thing so thanks :) It's an interesting point you made about the charge speed on the Tesla with BYD batteries. I was talking to someone yesterday about that. It's fascinating how different it is at charging.

Happy for you to reinforce your objective assessment of BYD as being a quality vehicle. But please, keep your Western politics away from your talks on cars. President Xi is perfectly entitled to get on with Putin or whoever else he wants. I am not interested in knowing your views on either of them - nor on the war in Donbas. Start another channel if you want to flaunt your willingness to naively swallow Western media narratives whole, and propagate them. Please, stick with what you do well, and talk about cars.
