Blows my mind to see so many people say that the EX30 is too small. Surely if you need more boot space you just get a roof box? We dont all need huge 4x4 to drive to and from work and around town.
As someone who currently drives an XC60 and has a twin motor EX30 on order, the only reason I’m buying the EX30 is the fact that it’s 0-100km time is exactly the same as a Lamborghini Urus. Having said that, I love its design as well and the fact that it’s smaller and easier to navigate and park. Hate the fact that there’s no driver display or that the window switches are in the middle but hey, you’re getting a car that accelerates as quickly as a Lambo so they had to cut the costs somewhere.
Just ordered the EX30 Twin Motor Ultra aswell. To not have a drivers display isn't that big of a deal. I drove a Renault Scenic back in the days and to only have a speedometer in the middle is quite nice, because you always see it in your side vision and don't have to look down. Of course a head up display would be the best option, but yeah... Doesn't bother me. Really looking forward to that crazy acceleration like you said 🚀
Nice comparison, Thom! For me it‘s definitely the (new) 40 series, the EX30 is just for singles/couples (no kids) or a second family car. My opinion 🙂 But I‘d love to have the front design of the EX30 on the C40, that‘d be perfect 😊
While I definitely appreciate it being cheaper, it's not exactly a price issue keeping me from the 40 series. I test drove a C40, and just didn't like it very much to be honest - but my biggest issue really is size. I live in a city, and I have tight parking spots everywhere. I need a smaller vehicle, and even the C40 was too large. It's either the EX30 or the 24 Kona EV for me.
Great job once again. I love your videos. For me, as the more traditional Volvo-aged driver, I’m looking forward to my new Volvo XC40 Ultimate having had my beloved XC70 for over 7 years - longer than I have kept any car before. Volvo still set the standard
And you can use towing for more storage , but i hope they will include the following options: 1》HUD (Heads Up Display) option add on. 2》Sun/Moon Roof cover, one temporary and flexible/foldable, living in the trunk when not in use, and the second options is a retractable one that lives in the headlining with 30% living in the front and 70% living in the rear, and meeting with magnets for complete coverage. 3》(a personal wish) to add a bidirectional trailer electric coupling, being able to power the trailer/camper, but also to be able to use power from the trailer/camper, enabling battery trailers/campers to offset or even increase the vehicle range while towing, and also to be able to be used as a home battery with the same coupling.
Hi Thom, great overview. I am also looking at the "chinese Volvo" build on the same platform, the Zeekr X that is a kind of in between both models. For 90% of the people range will be more important than extreme acceleration figures and also for a big part of the drivers, buttons and a driver screen are also important topics why some may not choose the very nice EX30. I live in Switzerland for me 4wd is important and then electric cars just are too expensive at the moment. 50k for a very small "VW Polo" car as an entry price point. I wish a 4WD with two inexpensive smaller engines, 200-250 hp is far enough for me. And for many others that are living in mountainous countries but don't need Ferrari performance. Many thx and greetings from Switzerland.
I find it very difficult Thom. I already have a XC40 and it is a basic version, T2 with not a lot extra options, so the Core version. I already ordered a New XC40 again the Core but no a recharge version. But than came the big reveal of the Volvo EX30 and I switched it for an Ultra EX30 with also heated seats and stearingwheel. I now have a lot of options which I don't have with the XC40. But still I'm doubting 😢. Thx for your nice video's.
Excellent comparison, Thom. We are hoping that Volvo will sell the EX30 in the U.S. the single engine, rear-wheel, standard range (i.e., the lowest priced) version. Our dealer says they have not heard that they won't...or that they will. We want it for in-town use only, and it won't be driven on trips or in snowy conditions. Doesn't need extra acceleration, range, or cost! I am doubtful that we'll be able to get one though.
Using WLTP numbers I calculate 13.3 vs 13.8 kWh/100 km, EX30 vs XC40 RWD variants. I am surprised they are so close. Does WLTP test favor low speed driving? I would imagine EX30 is more efficient at high speed due to smaller frontal area, lower body and less ground clearance.
I would probably prefer an XC40 just for the boot space, and used they're affordable enough, but... Insurance is too high and they have that vibration coming through the steering wheel at highway speeds...
I wait for the EX60 to replace my XC60. As a second car we have a now 8.year old Suzuki S-cross and think to replace it with the EX 30 plus single motor. For that car we don't need the extended range and in the winter is a real range of 160 km more than enough .
Hoi Tom. Goede info. Hoe ging het met je lengte met het in en uitstappen in de XC30 en met de positie achter het stuur. Ik ben zelf 1.93m en vraag mij af of de auto niet te krap is. Dank je voor de informatie. Groet
7:55 I'm not sure where you're getting the XC40 Twin motor range estimate of 332 miles. We have a 2023 and the range is spec'd out around 225 miles and we obviously get a touch less than that. Not even the '24 model of XC40 is going to get 300. (Even utilizing all cells).
@@thom-lov Ahh I didn't know this. Seems arbitrary but maybe they'll start using it stateside and we can discern it relative to reality. Best! (can't wait to drive the EX30, getting such positive press)
@@Station2Station-du2gh yes the WLTP and US EPA (?) are ridiculous numbers which do not reflect reality, industry really needs to change this. You will love the EX30 I’m sure! 😊
even though it'd be considered a downgrade -- i'm all-in for the EX30 esp. if volvo actually does the funky colors. yellow, etc. aside from their fjord blue -- everything is boring. this is coming from a guy who has had a grey xc90, xc60 in the cool blue version, xc40 red, and my current silver dawn c40.... because all east coast cool ones went to west coast USA since all ev's are a hot commodity there... not so much east coast... so we get bare minimum numbers.
So soon XC40/C40 become EX40 and EC40 to make the names less confusing. I think EX30 will cannibalise these cars tho, IMO they now feel very outdated especially the centre screen and infotainment
Hi Thom , Excellent stuff ! Just a quick question. I’ve seen in one of your videos that you have a dog. Is C40 boot good enough to accommodate a large breed dog ?
Thanks! Yep that’s correct, our dog is a Labrador retriever who is 25kg. Id say that’s already close to the max size I would put in the C40. XC40 accommodates better for a bigger size dog.
Didn't get an XC40 or polestar 2: not enough headroom in rear, and the luggage space is underwhelming. The EX30 is very much a hot-hatchback class of vehicle. Be fun if that js what you want. Every vehicle like this speeds the death of the ICE
If you have a nose in a Volvo dealers they usually have a glass display cabinet either next to reception or at there parts section where you can purchase car mats etc, they usually have the little diecast cars in there to purchase along with keyrings etc
I'm going to wait until they make gas powered car illegal. Then, I will finally buy a used electric car. Why? Because a used one will be affordable and by then it will be so hot out, you probably won't want to go anywhere anyway!
Blows my mind to see so many people say that the EX30 is too small. Surely if you need more boot space you just get a roof box? We dont all need huge 4x4 to drive to and from work and around town.
That why i will buy ex30. I dont need second 5m long car to drive 20km a day inside city.

I reserved an ex30 but might do the polestar 2 instead. I really prefer the fast back and lower design and having a driver screen
Smaller and cheaper works for me, so EX30.
Same 🎉
Sounds like a perfect match! 😉

We are getting both Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance versions in the USA, but not the base single motor with the 51 kWh battery.

Which is better in snow, a lighter car or heavier?
Do you think that range on motorways will be the same? (small battery on EX30 but better efficiency because better aerodynamics)
XC40 recharge has an opening sunroof that is a nice plus.
Very true!

Thanks for the charts. That was a lot of numbers to process.

What is the difference in driver seat height? I really can't find that info anywhere.

I still very much prefer a dashboard in front of me rather than having to look for the speedo at the centre console
Many agree with you 😉
Many thanks Thom! Pixel LED only available for XC40? The smaller size of the EX30 I like, but only Center Display does not really convince me.
EX30 looks very similar to my e-Golf dimensions, but I think e-Golf may have more rear legroom.

I think the EX60 will end up a bit smaller than XC60 too, probably a little bigger than XC40 making the XC40 size class redundant.

I would not to be honest. Unless it would be a 1 or 2 year company car. Otherwise go bigger eg XC40 Recharge.
