What's this nonsense about Tim Curry? He understood the assignment perfectly, and delivered a 110% cheesy acting. Red Alert is not as serious as the Tiberium series, it's all about that cheese.

Red Alert 3 was released 15 years ago and people are still playing it, organizing tournaments, and making videos about it. The game aged like fine wine can't deny that! Say whatever you want but Red Alert 3 has clearly withstood the test of time.

I would give 6.5/10. Being lower detail is a good way to put it. It was a overall a little too ridiculous for me, like not every unit needs some crazy gimmick.
I felt like the game was just trying to cram way too many gimmicks to the point that nothing really stood out.

Love the dissection of the gameplay and music. I do agree in that I'd rate RA2 higher than RA3. I didn't mind the 3D art style for what it was back in the day. If RA4 were to magically come into existence, I would be happy with a modernized 2D or 2.5D aesthetic. 3D would be fine too I guess. I like the commander abilities, though tying it to a tech tree would make unlocking them feel more consistent. It was like super weapons lite. I disliked the harvesters in RA3 though. Having a hard placed node to mine from removed any need to build multiple harvesters. It also led to the stupid meta of building walls around them to lock them in. Otherwise, as Soviets, you could just rush terror drones to destroy the opponent's economy.
The best thing about RA3 was the birth of the Tim Curry meme.
But yea, my favorite faction is the Soviets. Apocalypse tanks just too good. It was also fun using the commander to snipe enemy MCVs when they were expanding. My favorite commander though was probably Yuriko since she could just juggle multiple tanks as long as you micro her. I found it funny that they followed the trope of a school girl too haha. Of course.

    • @livaveragegamer
      @livaveragegamer  7 месяцев назад

If they made an RA4 I'd take it any way it comes. (please god not a mobile game) I agree though in 2008 I never thought of the move to 3D being a negative because everyone was doing it and it was a pretty game they just didn't age well. I think the tech for 3D RTS has come a long way anyways, I mean, I think SC2 did a great job with it. That said, I really like the 2.5D look. It's on the reasons I'm so excited for DORF.

Well, I have to say that I disagree (partially)
I think the soundtracks were awesome. How it switched to battle music when a fight started. How every faction hat a fitting battle music (allied - light rhythmic rock, soviets - heavyweight hard rock and empire - also had music..jk they had a fitting theme, too) also you will gain a special piece when you fire your super weapon.
The Soviet chanting/marching song in the menu was awesome.
    Yes HM3 wasn’t as good as HM2 or 1.
My personal biggest issue was the balancing. 2 peacekeepers could absolutely destroy about 10 conscripts and the allied super weapon could destroy your construction yard AND your tank facility while the vacuum bomb (props to the idea, it’s cool) had a much smaller AOE and would just damage the construction yard. The list goes on and on.
I’m not trying to sound like a fanboy for RA3 but it was definitely not as bad, as people remember it. I’ve had good fun with it and will enjoy playing it. Thus said, RA2 is still the best and will always have a special place in my heart

The worst part of this game for me was that I was the micro-managing.
My anit-air units are getting attacked on the ground? Okay, now I have to quickly select all of them from in the battle group and switch them.
My anit-air units are getting attacked on the ground but I am busy with a different group somewhere else? Result, my anti-air group has been wiped out.
I was never able to use Yuriko properly. (I'm glad you enjoyed her.) I seem to recall her abilities required me to target with her. That is to say, she didn't use her abilities on her own. But maybe I am just thinking of her anti-tank attack being on and then a random conscript kills her while I am elsewhere.
Honestly, on memory, I would have scored it lower. I played all the way through, but it was difficult in a way that felt like it wanted to punish the players for not choosing a better game.
Westwood's talent started their own studio. I would love to see your review of some of their games.

Hah, I remember RA3. I played RA1 as a little kid, Generals when I was 11-12. Then warcraft 3 became my mainstay game. I missed out on RA2 actually. Mainly because I didn't have copy. I do now but haven't installed it and played. I remember being pretty excited about RA3, especially since I'd played Tiberium Wars the previous year. I went into RA3 blind with zero expectations and I really liked it. I thought the way they'd added to Hellmarch was pretty cool, though my favorite version is from RA2. (I'm a guitarist so I love Frank Klepacki, Damage King from Universe at War was one of the first songs I learned to play.) I really liked the expansion for RA3 as well. I agree on the unit special abilities though. I think it kinda makes sense though between the design of the harvesters and refineries and the extra unit abilities. Microing those abilities become very problematic when you have to switch to your base and either expand or move refineries.
I thought there was just too much micro with the units abilities anyways, but I'm a scrub when it comes to RTS titles so *shrug*. Nice to see another video of yours. Ever since the one you did on sexualization and that I've been subscribed.

This is the first C&C game I was unable to play beyond a few tries. The effects had a similar effect on my as did Sonic the Hedgehog. Color blind modes don't really work when there is too much detail included with early 3D attempts. Not fun to play when all you see is a swirling blur of content. I like your thoughts on decision making, which seemed to me like less strategic and more tactical level decision, with the latter restricted with the removal of the former. The other piece I didn't care for was similar to the 1987 GIJoe shift from believeable units vs. futuristic sci-fi inventions. For the reasons I didn't like RA3 are the reason I really I enjoyed Generals. Wish there would be more done in that format.

It's really a shame that RA3 was the last C&C. It's the only game I've ever pre-ordered but was disappointed by the game at the time. Didn't like the bright, cartoony look of the environment, resource gathering, and that every single unit had an alternative mode. However, replayed the game multiple time with the Science Mod from moddb. Makes the game much harder.
Also this game is the pinnacle of Tim Curry's acting career. His maniacal delivery of "Space!" is pure genius

It's not bad, but it never got past the idea that Red Alert is "over the top" and never quite captured the sincere commitment to what made RA2 over the top.

I remember being very stoked for, and then heavily disappointed by this game. Honestly, for me the forced co-op was the absolute deal breaker. I didn't buy the game for co-op and I was never going to play co-op, and the AI commander feels like a cop-out. It's trying to have your cake and eat it, too. I didn't think the AI was adequate, and instead of playing the campaign on my own terms I'm constantly having to keep this AI in mind while the game is playing itself. There were other weak points, but this is the one that really made the game a chore to play for me.

  • @simon-ricardokuhn1713
    @simon-ricardokuhn1713 2 месяца назад

The skirmish in RA3 sucks. The AI spam with these mini superweapons like crazy and since there's no way to disable this crap, it ruined the skirmish for me. Even the easy AI is way too aggressive with these mini superweapons. And I'm not going to bother with higher AI difficulties after what I experienced in Tiberium Wars (seriously, Medium is at least 4x harder than Easy, way too steep of a difficulty curve).
In Red Alert 2, you only get 3 difficulties but it's fine in terms of difficulty curve. Easy is too easy but good if you just got started playing RA2 and don't want to play the campaign now. Medium is perfectly balanced and Hard is pretty difficult but doable. You can even fine-tune the difficulty by turning super weapons on or off (but it barely affects Medium it seems, they really take their time building a super weapon IDK).
Not saying it's a bad game, it has it's flaws but it's still pretty good. It looks much more vivid than Tiberium Wars (since the most of Earth got Tiberium'd in TW). It also has it's charme, the cutscenes are pretty hilarious and even spawned some memes, with the one with fleeing to space being the most infamous! Also I love how the game's tutorial is told by the 3 faction's main tanks with some hilarious moments here and there.

I've only done 12 reviews in total so no. 9 is the highest and it was for Armored Core 6. I realise that you might be asking on a more casual level but every time I start a review for youtube I take a far more analytic approach than I would for my personal self. I can give an example, I had a lot of fun playing Wanted Dead and I certainly got value out of it, combat was solid etc.. but ain't no way it would get a good rating if I started writing a review on it.
Will I ever give a 10? ummm I think the game review industry has conditioned people to expect high numbers, or more the other way round, viewers reward reviewers that affirm their positive bias. This is a whole video topic I'll be doing soon.

Red Alert 2 was one of my favorite games and I was super hyped for RA3. I had no money at the time so I didn't get the game until some time after the release and the game was unplayable for me as it is the ugliest game I have ever played. I wanted to like the game but honestly the graphics ruined it for me, the units looks very bad and all the lasers and lights made it just very disorganization as to much was happening at once on screen.
I can't think of to many games I have stopped playing because they were painful to look at but RA3 was it, I hoped this video would change my mind but looking at the gameplay just no. So I will keep to RA2 and Tiberian Sun.

The Story plot was less mediocre and repeated, the gameplay was unique and great but the units and mechanics of the game was not diverse and not enough compare to two Tiberium Wars franchises, and the graphics and resolution and too simple and cartoonic.

Look, I will be honest, RA3 is kind of an L. C&C3 was pretty good, even if it didn't quite nail the bleak atmosphere of Tib Sun, but the game played good, and felt fun to play. I can't say the same about this game. I think they failed on both gameplay and setting. They pumped up the cheese on an already cheese setting making it just a damn clown show that doesn't take itself seriously at all, Which makes me ask why should we then? And gameplay is just misses all around. Focus on naval combat and naval building, makes it annoying, Co-op campaign that doesn't need to be one, units all have activateable effects which makes them annoying to micro. And lastly the style of game makes my eyes bleed. The thick outlines and oversaturated colors looks so bad. Everything looks cartoony, just overall a colossal disappointment.

I dont understand how red alert 3 can look so bad; you mention the lack of details and cartoony, plastic toy look. One would think it is because of the time and the limits of the tech back then. But then Generals looks amazing, which is older than RA3.
But for me the biggest 2 gripes were the shared land and sea units, making it impossible to select e.g. all flack trucks to protect one side and all flack ships to protect the coast. Because now they are all the same and all get selected...
And the second and worst offender: the fucking shared economy. In theory, this is a good idea for cooperation. But in practice it just hinders you from playing efficiently. And playing with bots is just a nightmare as they keep spamming units and buildings, so your economy is always 0.
I have not loathed a game as much, I think, as I have RA3. In my world, there are only 3 RA-games: RA, RA2 and RA2:YR
