Hey all, so here it is, Yuri's Revenge in all its glory. Hope you enjoy. As for the future, there are more video essays and reviews on the way. Mental Omega is on the list but I'm leaning toward RA3 first. Drop a comment on which way you reckon I should go next
You forget about co-op campaign Play as Yuri factions with Three Mission.

Yuri Faction was generally considered overpowered in Skirmish/Multiplayer.
Their mind control was too strong against tanks, you can try use infantry to overwhelm the mind control but the Gatling tank was too good against infantry. Boomer subs was basically two attack subs and a dreadnought rolled into the cost of a single dreadnought giving it stupid amounts of value. Yuri slave miners can be built next to the ore allowing them to efficiently harvest ore no matter how far they are from base. If Yuri faction ever runs out of money, they can mutate their own slaves and feed them into the grinder for money.
Westwood could have fixed this with future patches but they only got to release a handful. Did you know the popular mental omega mod originally started as an attempt to balance the game for multiplayer. It quickly blew up into it's own thing.
Omg... I was shocked the first time a gatling tank came up against my troops. Yeah I can see how all of this could happen.
Nothing bad in having stronger and weaker factions, not everything needs to be balanced.
On the other hand Prism Tanks were broken as hell, only weakness they had was being veey fragile.
Rocketeers could destroy your base quickly forcing you to spend on a lot of anti air. And sneaky players could get a commando squad of Chrono Legionaires remove kwy structures or defenses feom your base while you were not watching.
Overall the only ones who were "balanced" were the soviets who rely on massing T1 units such as Consvripts and Rhinos or rush to unleash apocalypse and Kirovs.
I wouldn't expect anything less from Yuri
Yuri had an unfair advantage imo until I played online........ Yuri didn't stand a chance. Most picked allied..... I use to just make a fleet of engineers and ransack enemy bases to take them over and sell them before they destroyed them

Think you should put in a word for the exceptional mods for Yuri's Revenge such as Mental Omega and Rise of the East. Their scope of new changes, units, campaigns and maps are sheer and unbelievable.

RA2, Tiberian Sun and WC3 were my childhood. Amazing times, amazing games.

A small correction on the units being 3D voxel models. Most vehicle units (factory/shipyard/airfield produced units) are voxels, with a few exceptions, like dolphins, squids and terror drones which are 2d sprite based units. In TS, cyborg reapers, limpet drones, wolverines, juggernauts and titans are 2d sprites (Mammoths mk.II are, weirdly, voxels) . In both games all infantry units (barracks produced units) are sprites. Building are 2D sprites, however they can have voxel turrets and/or barrels, like the grand cannons and the campaign only Yuri statues in RA2, or the EMP launcher and the deployed artillery/juggernaut/tick tank in TS.
This will be forever my childhood game. Still play it to this day!
One year later after Yuri's Revenge, Renegade was born followed by Generals and Zero Hour. Many of the core RA2 and Yuri Revenge's gameplay elements were carried over to Generals and Zero Hour, especially the Overlord Tank's vehicle crushing ability.
I hope they remaster this at some point soon. I remember having so much fun back in the day. 😎
This game gives me a feeling nostalgia, Allied campaign was great but Soviet's campaign was better. Nice review keep it up
Yuri's Revenge is in my opinion one of the best RTS games ever created!
Man, after all these years, and I'm still playing this.
I just finished the Red Alert 2 Allied campaign (yeah, I’m boring 😂) and started YR. Didn’t get a chance to finish RA1 because it was too hard for me back in the day haha, really enjoying RA2.
When you mentioned Battle Zone, I had to sub. Clearly you have good taste in pc games haha! That game was a classic!

I love mental omega. Like its so well done.
One minor issue I had with the game was that, if you played in Meat Grinder mode, you didnt have access to the a.phibia transport, which was really annoying in some maps if you were yuri or soviet. Allies had access to the Nighthawk helicopter.

I find it interesting that you enjoyed the Soviets so much. I remember ages ago people talking about how they were underpowered and too weak compared to the other factions. And to be totally honest, I agreed. They were always super difficult for me to win with and I usually felt like I was continually behind the 8-ball when playing them.
Now I hear more about how they are good for an early game rush or late game Kirov fleet assault.
I remember me and my brother would fight over the computer to play this hahaha! Good times! For me it was, RA2 & YR, starcraft & broodwars, rise of empire.

it own downside was there was no Yuri campaign, but hey that what mods are for
siege chopper is definitely my favorite units in all RTS. It's basically a siege tank from StarCraft that can fly.

Funny how the Allied drone tanks are kinda akin to real life unmanned drones. Fantasy that's not so far off of reality.
I hope you end up doing a CnC RA: 3 review. I dunno if you stream or not, but I would 100% watch a RA3 playthrough. I remember playing it back in the days on an Xbox 360 of all things hahaha. I later tried to play it on PC, or maybe it was RA2 - I don't remember, but the optimization and resolution was kinda tough for me to get used to; it felt so zoomed in that it made me slightly motion sick. Anyway, hope to eventually hear your thoughts on RA3.
I do stream. Twitch.tv/livaveragegamer I've tried streaming red alert 2 in the past but people really struggle. In general people don't like watching fixed cameras, isometric or zoomed out games. But if I get enough people asking for it I'll defs stream it. I have the steel tin edition sitting on my shelf begging me to be played again.

8:15 There is this upcoming game called Silica which is supposed to be a FPS-RTS hybrid with Asymmetric Factions. Developed by Bohemia Interactive of ARMA fame.
I've been playing Silica. It seems promising and I've had a good bit of fun with it so far.
I love this game with the expansion. It especially does skirmish right, where you can play with or without super weapons and the easy AI is actually easy and not "easy" for absolute competitive pros (looking at you, Warcraft III), and since there are no support powers/mini superweapons/whatever they're called, they are not spamming with that crap (looking at you, Red Alert 3)

Mental Omega is now needed as that focuses more on the Story. 😊

This was just an improvement on the base game in every way. Recently replayed both campaigns and Yuri's revenge plays so damn well still. Very enjoyable and still holds up. There a few RTS quality of life things that are missing that games like Starcraft 2 polished out and added to the genre but it is not to an extent that it takes away from the game. The setting is just cheese enough without being over the top like RA3.
I agree ra3 is where I left off, ra2 was good enough

The only problem with the 2d style is the fact that the map can't be rotated normally. That can make looking at some things confusing. What would be great is if the map appeared as a 2d plane but was actually also a model you could rotate, while still of course having that voxel unit design.
I think I'm one of the few that likes the original game better. I played through both again recently and the original game is much more balanced. YR's mind control element meant I was usually building robot tanks because I simply didn't want to manage a regular fleet of vehicles only to have random ones turn on one another constantly. It became very monotonous.

This is the gold standard of expansion packs. I wish we had this instead of DLC, DLC that has what should have been in the original content instead of deliberately removed to be sold later...

No promises, I'll take a look but, I'm reluctant with most gachas because they are designed to suck your time. It makes them difficult to review. Also have to dive in and unravel the monetisation which is something I don't engage with.
@@livaveragegamer I understand,as for the monetization "Limbus Company" are generous in term of spending and after the "Sexualzation in video game" Limbus Company is the only gacha game that don't relay on "fanservice".

Nah, RA2 is more balanced. The campaign is the main prize in YR.

Disagree. I feel like YR is a massive downgrade to vanilla. Mainly because they went *way* overboard with the comedy. Most of it feels forced. Almost as bad as RA3.
