Could really hear the contrast between them ... the 28 was bright and punchy ... the 35 sounded like the whole band, lead, rhythm, and bass. Really illustrates why the 28 is the quintessential bluegrass axe while the 35 is the quintessential singer-songwriter axe.

Thanks Delvin. It's been years since I've played guitars (however my ears haven't forgot) but from your excellent consistency and picking the tone of the D28 seemed a little crisper from the 35. Having said that it would depend greatly on the music I was going to play on which guitar I picked up. Keep on smiling.

Great comparison and really great playing, I read your replies to others where you downplay your guitar skills but I say you truly are a great soulful guitar player that reminds me of the great Tony Rice. I recently purchased a D35 and while it’s a beautiful sounding guitar for a variety of styles and the previous owner had installed an LR Baggs Anthem pickup which sounds as acoustic as any pickup I’ve heard so it’s a great guitar but it doesn’t have as much of the bluegrass voice that the HD28 does so I’m thinking of returning it (to guitar center) to get a D28 or an HD28 instead. And the tones I’m hearing in your video seem to back up my thoughts. You play both guitars great but the HD28 just has that classic Martin sound. Do you still own both? If you only kept one which one? Or if you kept both, which do you find yourself using more? Thanks for any reply/info on that question and just thanks for making a very informative video just through your very musical playing.

GREAT comparison! Thank you! I've been thinking about finally picking up a D-28 (not HD) or D-35 and these comparisons help SO much.
Based on videos like this and in-peron testing, to MY ears, they BOTH sound great, but I'm leaning toward the D-28. The D-35's high end seems just a bit more prominent and I think the D-28 is "EQ'd" the slightest bit more to my liking.

Thank you for this eye-opening demonstration. I've owned a few d35's. One from the early 70's. I got that guitar for the booming bass response I wanted at the time. Then in 97, I got one - more balanced -like yours. But then in 2018 I played a hd35 and it opened a new vista of enhanced middles and highs. it is as bright as your 28 but with a deeper bass response. I do like the brightness of your 28. It's quite amazing how dissimilar similar guitars are. My 97 d35 sounds just like yours. But I like your 28 sound more. Thanks again.

Very nice. Your skillful playing allows both of these beauties to shine. I think the distinctions between the scalloped 5/16” bracing on the HD-28 and the non-scalloped 1/4” bracing on the D-35 are smaller than that physical feature difference might suggest. In its own way, each guitar digs in to deliver rich bass and resonance. One day I’d like to play an HD-35. For now, I love my HD-28. Thanks for a welcome respite from the day.

  • @grinningfool34
    @grinningfool34 2 года назад +2

Through my headphones, the 35 sounded a little tighter and mellow. Probably the lower action and the fact that the hd28 is well broken in and pushing more air. I think it would be helpful to get your thoughts about what you are hearing in the room, because we can’t possibly hear what you hear listening through tiny speakers. Both guitars sound fabulous, and your picking is fantastic. Loved the sound of that drop D tune on the HD28.

Lovely playing. Really showcases both guitars very well. For me the HD-28 is a little more articulate with somewhat better note separation but the D-35 is boomier and more mellow, perhaps a better strummer? I'd take the HD-28 first but my preference is marginal. Both sound great and either of them would delight me to own. Great video by the way. I've just subscribed.

Your playing is absolutely incredible and really shows off the great sound of both guitars. Still to my ear, the 28 takes the spotlight. Both are beautiful guitars.. I wonder if the 20year age difference has anything to do with it...
But the D28 was cleaner, warmer and more balanced on the low end. D35 had power and amplification advantages, maybe due to a tighter/higher action. I also wonder what age the strings have on each guitar, the D35 sounded like newer strings to me.. but I could be wrong there.
My general opinion is that the older guitars, cared for properly of course, have a much more balanced and rich tone to them. I also really like Martin D18's probably the best.
I have a 2019 D28, and am so grateful to finally have the ability to afford a Martin. It's been a blessing to own these past few years.

Great playing Devin.... great tone on both...What flat pick and thickness do you use? The HD28 wins this shootout as it has more string to string articulation and clarity and a fuller, richer, dryer sound...Some of that comes from it's age and some from its build and scalloped bracing differences from the D35. The lower string heights on the D35 can be heard with slight string buzzing and less resonance and power on pick attack.

Thanks I appreciate you commenting, in terms of action height I wouldn’t know about measurements I just go by feel. To me a low action is the point before they buzz as low as possible before creating problems. Some people can play at a high action with speed and agility I can’t. But then again I can’t play very good at any action. When it comes to nut with I generally like 1 3/4 better but I don’t mind 1 11/16 as long as the string height at the net is low. I know I gave very vague answers to your questions but I appreciate you watching and commenting 👍

Your remark about how what folks hear in a video in not what they should expect at the guitar store. Since getting mad-35 I’ve had chance to play other Martin’s, at stores and with acquaintances. The grain is straight as a arrow , until it get to the upper bout and it actually turns almost 90 degrees into the middle piece of the back which is a slight redish tone that the grain leans out to both sides ! it's absolutely gorgeous ! I searched the web and couldn't find one anywhere close to the finish or the character or the price ! I made sure I got the pictures and serial numbers before I ordered it ,,,, Fingers crossed ! Do a Compasrion between a Blueridge BR-160 & a D-28 ! see what ya think !

Some mighty fine playing on both guitars. I had a hard time deciding which I like best. I have a less expensive Martin MMV I purchased about ten years ago and thought about upgrading to a D-35. As you said if you sit down in a room and played both, you may find a totally different sound that you like. Thank you for a wonderful video.

I play a J45 Gibson Custom. I love de midranges from the rosewood, so as on the D35. I think they more responsiv than the J45. So I played a Martin up the 3000€ and yes, the Martin have more „the“ spirit from a very based sound than the Gibsons. I want to sell my J45 to get a D35. Delvin, many thanks for the short Video about the comparing and greez from me in Germany.

Which do you prefer? You obviously can tear both up! The hd28 seems to be bass heavy and the d35 seems more rounded at least to my ears

I had a D45 reimagined and a 1937 authentic D28. Traded them both for a high end gibson electric. I picked up a D35 later and like it better than both the D45 and D28 Authentic 1937.

Both sounded great and one not better than the other, but I'd say the D-35 sounded tighter (newer) with a bit more bass.

So my ears hear a little more of an open quality on the HD-28…which makes sense if it’s an ‘01 model. The D-35 sounds louder and sharper, which I’m confident has more to do with it being brand new as you said and less with its construction (because, aging and whatnot being equal, the D-35 should sound less sharp than the HD in most comparisons). I would suggest revisiting this comparison in a year or two after the D-35 has opened up a bit (if you still own both).

D35 is crisper however I prefer the HD28, it seems to have my ear. Maybe with age the D35 will get better.

Your fingers liked the setup on the D35 better, easy to see that.
The 28 booms better but the 35 articulates better.

The top board of the D-35 is supported by thin and short bracing bars. Therefore, the top board reflects the pitch of the mid-high range more delicately. The D-28 is supported by thicker and taller bracing, and produces a powerful sound that can handle powerful inputs. Martin is skilled at controlling the sound of acoustic guitars.

I grew up listening to my dad play on his 1969 D35. To me, the 35 sounds more like a Martin than most 28s. Oddly, the new 35 sounds more like Tony’s guitar than the HD28. My dad also has the Clarence White edition D28, but his 35 still sounds better playing Tony Rice licks.
