  • 🎸 In this second edition of 'Benchtalk', Milo makes an ode to the Martin D35 by comparing a couple of vintage specimens with a brand-new one. All whilst telling the history of this now legendary dreadnought, and why many artists chose it over the classic D28.

The deep, rich and sonorous sound of the D-35 is wonderful. I love my D-35. It’s my favourite after my D-18 then D-28. Martin’s is a peerless company.

Thank you for the great video!
I have a Martin D-12-35 with slotted headstock, circa 1969 or '68. Beautiful Brazilian. It has been well-loved by me since the late '70s.

Excellent service, Sir - can't decide and will listen closely again. Have a semi-retired 1984 here, which has been my loyal squire since 1992. Wonder what you think about the 70s/80s/90s waves.

I absolutely love my D-35 sunburst. Of the many wonderful instruments I’ve owned over the years, this one gets most of my attention.

Hey, I have two, one 1970 an the other 2016 (centennial). Both are AMAZING!. A question, (from Patagonia Chile!🇨🇱), what strings, material and gauge you use on those beauties?… (i use Martin 13 phosphor bronze). Good luck and thanks!, great guitar player!

    Wow, I was born in 1966, I can only daydream about a companion like a ‘66 D35!

One slight but important CORRECTION at 1:50, you noted that the lighter braces on the D-35 "reminded players of the 'Scalloped Braces' that were invented in 1944."
It's the complete opposite. Prior to the end of 1944, Martin Scalloped the Top Braces on all of their guitars. Late in 1944, the last scalloped braced Martin was serial number #89926. All guitars made from the beginning of 1945 up to 1976 have "straight", or "non" scalloped top braces. In 1976, Martin introduced the HD-28 that brought back the top Herringbone Trim along with "Scalloped" top Braces. After that, Martin would make special edition models that would have scalloped Braces. In 2012, Martin Re-imagined the D-18 with Scalloped and Forward-shifted top braces. Then in 2018, all Standard Series guitars have hand-shaped scalloped bracing, with the important exception of two iconic Martin models, the D-28 and the D-35, both with "non" scalloped braces.
    Just a thought!
    Great video, Milo!
    Tot zeins,
    Tim

Hey Tim! Thanks so much for you in-depth comment :) To be honest, I meant to say that it reminded players of the braces that were "abandoned" in '44, but listening back it sure sounds like I said "invented" haha. I completely agree with what you said though ;)

      Hey there, Milo!
      You were correct all along!
I just listened back to what you originally said and (My Bad) you did INDEED say "abandoned in 1944".
I misunderstood YOU. I thought you said "invented"????? So, thanks for your reply. YOU WERE CORRECT THE FIRST TIME! As we say in America (using an Italian accent) "What's a matter me?"😅 Oh well?
      Tot zeins,
      Tim

I have a '68 D-35S bought in 1973 from Gruhn in Nashville. Best sounding guitar I have ever played. Local musician/ repair guy recommended on CD by Norman Blake (with whom he played) refretted it for me in '12, said "don't sell this guitar."
