Quick Martin D41 vs D35 comparison - flatpicking

  • Practising another Carl Miner TNAG demo tune, and recorded a slower version on the D41 and the D35. The first run through is on the 41 -- a 2018 reimagined, and the second time round is the 35 -- a 2014 retro one. They both play really nicely, but it's always refreshing to swap between them. I didn't apply any audio 'stuff' -- this is straight from a spaced pair of SDCs panned hard left/right.
    Carl's original (and wonderful) tune is here:

    I played a D42 30 years ago that I’ve always regretted not buying, incredible guitar, the one that got away. I have a 69 D35 that’s the best one I’ve ever heard. I added bone saddle, nut and pins, to compensate for the bass from the 3 piece back, it’s an amazing guitar. I’ve got a few others that I love but Martins are still the king of the flattop to me.

    Both are superb specimens, exemplified by the wonderful playing. Great job! I hear the presence of the D41 sitting a little further back, with alot of bell like ringing and overtones. Very spacious and rich sounding. The D35 is a bit more in your face and fundamental in tone. It's less rich, but stronger in sound. Horses for courses.

    I play a somewhat older worn-out Martin D35, but when I put new strings on, it really comes alive. 012's are swell, but let me tell, they sure make that guitar ring. 010's my friend, are easier to bend yet the prettier they sing. I play it in the daytime, I play it in the night, I play it when I'm feelin' blue, it makes me feel alright. I play it when the Sun shines, I play it when it rains. I play when my heart aches and it takes away the pain. I play it in the early morn and in the afternoon, it just does something to me, it really makes me swoon. I play a somewhat older worn-out Martin D35 and I still have no regrets, I play that thing so much these days, I've worn out all the frets. So I went and bought another one, the younger of the two, so now I have two sweethearts and I don't know what to do. The younger is the pretty one, the older is the wise, the older breaks my heart and the younger feeds my eyes.... So tell me Tom, please tell me, what's a soul to do? How dare I play the one and to the other still be true?

    I watched a video a few days ago. I think the guy was a Martin employee, but I can't say for sure. I also think that he said that anything above the D-35 had expensive appointments, but was no better constructed for sound. I have owned a D-15, a D-28, and a D-35, and I loved all of them. I loved the D-35 the most. It was easy to play, and the sound was the best of any guitar I have ever owned. The D-28 may have projected better, but I had the guitars almost forty years apart, so I couldn't say for sure.

    • @tdlw
      @tdlw  6 месяцев назад

      I've heard the same thing about the higher-numbered models. I've also heard that there might be less 'variability' among the higher ones (i.e. perhaps tighter QA controls?). Either way, I bought the D-41 after playing it in a shop, and regardless of the bling -- it was the nicest sounding, easiest to play acoustic that I've ever touched!

  • @wrightwrjr

    Once I pick up and play an American made Martin they all sound good to me. I recently bought a 000-18 and while shopping I played a D41 and a D45. The store didn't have a D-35, so I've never played one of those, but the 000-18 I purchased sounded just as good to me as the D41 and it has a shorter scale length which I really like. They just make great guitars. Now, once you drop down to the Road Series and others that are made in Mexico there is definitely a big difference in sound. There are a few that I can't believe Martin puts their name on, but when it comes to the American made ones they are just unbeatable in my opinion. I've owned Taylor, Blueridge, Epiphone, and Takamine, and they don't stack up to a Martin. I do have an Alvarez that has a wonderful sound, but it's a different sound than my 000-18.

    Great video. Nice demo of the tonality. I gave this a like and I'm not in a habit of doing that. The d41 sounds better in every way but in certain rare instances, I feel like I would choose the 35 due to the slightly less "perfect" tone. The high end is no match and that just underscores the amount of definition on the 41 vs the 35. The 41 is also tighter and more elegant. But I can put down money that some people would pay to NOT have elegant tone. Lol. I'm certainly not one of those players but I can understand it. Anyways great video as I've mentioned already.

      Been playing D41 and D35 a lot this week - and I love them both! My two feel very similar in the hand, which is one of the reasons I bought the 35, because it plays almost as well as the 41 - in fact the 35's neck is slightly easier for me to get my left thumb round. The sonic differences come from the 35's 3-piece back. If I wanted a strummer, I'd reach for the 35. For single-note melody stuff, the 41's got more sweetness too it. I'm not a huge fan of the 41's 'bling' - but I don't mind it either; if I coulda bought the same guitar plain, without the abalone, I probly woulda.

      This is where your bullshit hits the fan, there is a major difference between the 35 and the 41 (and 28, and 42, and 45) the 35 has 1/4 inch top bracing. And that is THE difference.
      I do agree that guitars are case by case. I have played many Martin dogs.

      Yes, but one of the two sounds more 'identical' than the other. Don't you agree?

    D41 is way warmer. D35 sounds bright.

      We have different definitions of bright and warm. Most would consider the opposite.

    A D2r is as good if not better than any Martin made, same specs as the best Martin makes. Why did Martin Discontinue the D2r is because they were buying it over their high priced Martins,D2r Was $950.
