A week ago I unexpectedly splurged on a new D-35. The bass is fantastic with a warm sound that fills the room but the treble response and sheer clarity is incredible as well. It’s a fantastic all around guitar for any genre and I love it
Fantastic review. This is easily one of the best reviews I've seen. You cover every aspect of both guitars.
Great comparison. You make both of these guitars sound so good. I love your playing style!
I bought a used 1971 D35 in 1972. It cost me a bit over $400. The sound of the guitar has improved over the years. It's an amazing instrument.
Both guitars are great . I got mine D 35 2018 . D 35 was my pick 20 years ago . Now I own one .
A most excellent and meaningful comparison. thank you.
Thank you for the kind words my friend
Great review once again. I love how the guitars are played in simple basic style to highlight their tonal properties instead of it being about the player's musical skills. Ian, your demos are the benchmark for this sort of review. The comparisons and contrasts are so easy to hear. Keep up the good work! (D-35 is the winner for me here btw)
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does anybody know of a method to log back into an Instagram account?
I stupidly lost the password. I would appreciate any help you can give me.
@Gary Emiliano instablaster ;)
@Emmitt Parker Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Emmitt Parker It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much, you really help me out :D
@Gary Emiliano no problem =)
Man, I love that D-35!!!! Thank you Ian! I've just been listening to you play! ;^)
It is a great guitar Daniel. Thanks for stopping by
Ian Meadows - I’m just starting out and I like how I can see your fingering on the neck very clearly. Learning new tunes from you!
Good job and thanks for using a capo. I use them often and you rarely see people using them on reviews
Been wanting a Martin forever....finally in a place where I can pull the trigger. I'm scared of used so I'm going to buy a new HD-28. I always check your videos for comparisons...thanks Ian. Sent beer money.
Much appreciated Dennis. Enjoy that HD! I think you will love it.
Nice comparison!! I think this D-28 has an excellent tone. Each guitar has different tone even the same model.
I have a Custom Shop D-28 and a Custom Shop HD-35,I like both equally as well. Both these new Martin's sound great in the video!!
Awesome John, sounds like you've got some great guitars.
@@ianmeadows6351 Thank's Ian,Great video!!
I might be bias but once you strummed the first chord it was the D35 it sounds so rich n full yes I owned one ☝🏼 👍🏻🙏🎸🤩
I bought my D35 in April 1973. Your playing actually brought tears to my eyes. Many many thanks.
you're biased.
I did not know what all the fuss was until I played these two models today. They vibrated after a long strum. They sounded just right. The other guitars by other fine manufacturers were not like these. The others were prettier on first blush, but these grabbed my heart and now look more beautiful now that I know what lies within.
Your words are exact. Beautiful comment!
Which one did you go with out of interest?
D41
@@josepheveson6187 D41
@@kofiofosu9051 Congratulations. That’s an heirloom guitar.
They are different but equally fine guitars, you wouldn't go wrong with either one. I bought a D-35 new back in '77 and it now has that great "aged wood" sound. As a solo finger-style player, the full bottom end of the D-35 works better for me. I also like the 35 series trim - it has a classy, but more subtle look than the more ornate 41 and 45 series. I like the unique look of the three piece back too, although I don't think it really affects the sound much (the deeper bass is due to the 20% thinner top braces). Good job on the recording also. Not only is the difference apparent between the two guitars, I instantly recognized the tonal quality of the D-35 as sounding similar to mine.
You were great in Then Came Bronson
@@TheDennzio Ha ha, I thought everyone had forgotten about that show.
D35 for me. Thank you for the test!
Go back and forth from 3:00 and 9:30 to hear a good comparison.
I love em both.
that frauline cover was nuts man, im totally getting the d35
Again great video Ian. Gotta go with 28 - stronger up the fingerboard. But a tougher choice than the 18 vs 28. In that contest it was easier to pick the 28. Thank you.
Sure would like to know what kind of strings you have on them. Thanks!
My heart would pick D28 in a heart beat. My soul would go for the D35 by my Wallet would forced me to buy a Chinese made guitar that sounds like a Non stop Nagging wife suffering from advanced Menopousal Rage.
hahahaha good stuff!
LOL that's priceless...
Eastman?
If you’re a professional musician and primarily perform live, you don’t need to buy an expensive guitar. Bringing a $3000 acoustic to a club is foolish unless if you have your own roadies to watch your gear.
hahaha, yeah misogyny's so funny
D35 is so resonant. I love it
Ian, I see the D'Addario phosphor bronze strings. I used to use those but switched to Elixir to get a bit more life. Do you feel I gave up tone? My D18 is in the shop and maybe I should try the D'Addario?
I love D'addario strings, but its all personal preference. Can't hurt to try them out and see how you like them!
I have a Martin Custom D28 VTS and have been looking into a D35. The 35 seems to be a tad more buttery on the top end where as the 28 is more vibrant. Love your vids, keep it up 👍🏼
I played a custom OO-28 VTS the other day and thought it died in the high end. How do you like the D28 VTS? DOes the fact that you are looking at D35 tell me my answer?
Toobula no not at all, I think it’s the absolute best acoustic I’ve ever played including some vintage models. Stunning guitar. Stay away from heavy thick picks, they will and always kill the high end.
Thanks for watching Brent!
Love both guitars but I love the pickin even more...
Thanks Jeremiah my friend
God, how does he do that opening at 7:01 on the e string? I wish I could do that as blissfully as he does
I have a 2013 D18 that I just love to death. I wish I could do a long term comparison with a D35. I wonder if it would support more punch when I flat pick hard. It seems like my D18 falls flat with hard string-slapping picking. Maybe all guitars do that.
I have a 2019 D18. Sounds like you’re running into the limitations of Sitka tops. I personally like the tone of Sitka more but if you want something you can play harder you’re probably looking for Adirondack.
They changed the bracing on the d-18's in 2018.
One of each would be perfect 👌
Outstanding demo! Now i'm hearing the D-35 tone like i'm used to!
Thanks Fernando!
I can't believe I'm gonna say this but the D28 sounds MUCH better in this video. I've had my heart set on a D35 for ages but this video may have changed my mind....and saved me a couple hundred bucks!
Agree with you, Stephen.
I want both.
Man I just want to hear some acoustic playing. Go to a Martin comparison video! Great playing
Thanks Kyle, nothing like a nice acoustic guitar....
Great comparison! I like the 35 better, seems richer and fuller.
you cant tell the difference
Which model are you playing the 28th or the 35
I have more guitars then i want to count different brands Martin making best guitars now then they ever made these two guitars very nice
They are phenomenal guitars! I agree 100%.
Because you didn’t heard a Santa Cruz
@@xchalibur77 yes I agree they do make great guitars one reason Martin had to start making theirs better but they are really a different League of guitars
Bark Russ You said it brother. I heard a lot of guitars but Santa Cruz has the harmonics unreached by any other manufacturer. Although I wouldn’t mind a D42 😍😍😍
Great work, thank you. I'd really been leaning towards a d-35 but this is the first A/B I've really heard and the d28 has such a great tone. The 35 did too, but was boomier. YMMV notwithstanding, Would you say this is typical of these models? I'm not in a place where I can really try them out and will need to buy on-line. Any input is welcome. Thanks.
John I would say you're right on, at least in my experience. Honestly though, both guitars are capable of making good sounds and you wouldn't be going wrong with either.
I've had a D-35 for 43 years, but recently purchased an M-36. I think it has the perfect balance between a full bottom end like the D-35, and the sharper treble of the D-28. Google the reviews of the M-36 and you'll find almost every one calls it "Martin's hidden gem". Before spending several thousand dollars on a new guitar, I strongly recommend taking a road trip to the nearest big city to try them out in person. It's great to get other people's opinions, but the final decision should be what *you* like best.
Potevate mettere una trascrizione quando si passava dalla D28 alla D35 per capire meglio...
To my ears, the tone from the D35 is smoother and would be my pick. The D28 has richer highs. Both great sounding guitars.
can't go wrong with these two....
Agree with you. I think I feel I like the D28 better. It's a bit brighter, more impertinent, more capable of expression. Would like to hear the guitar wailing in a hard strum. Bet the D28 has more moxy. The D35 is a fine wine, the D28 is a nice scotch. Alas, I own a D18, so not worth an upgrade, but both are better.
You make both these guitars sound great be hard to choose one over the other enjoy your playing thanks for posting
The D28 seems to have better over tones in the high frequencies as you have indicated. In my opinion the D28 sounds a little more natural but both guitars are great.
I have a d-35 bought in 2005 new and a hd-28. The one I'm playing is the one I like best. Both wonderful instruments. God must love me.
Umm so you like which one better
@@cfire99 they are both equal in their own respect but I have purchased a Gibson j-45 which holds equal respect. I love all three. They are their own guitar.
I had both kept the D-28 an ditched the D-35. D3-5 was more low end and great for alternate tunings and blue grass stuff.
I couldn't see any label??? or any indicator which one was being played????
You can use the time stamps in the description
The 35 has white binding along the neck
D35 played 2nd, white bound neck & the top appears lighter colour in video.
Are they basically the same guitar except for the three-piece back? They both sound great.
They have different bracing. D35 is lighter "000" bracing
@@ianmeadows6351 Thanks!
I do not know what you mean your heart will go for a D28 but your soul would go for a D35. Please explain what you mean. They’re both metaphors but do not help in making a decision. Which model is better for making chords and finger picking like Paul Simon Don McLean Jim Croce Gordon Lightfoot? I am not much of a lead guitarist if that helps
Are the necks exactly the same size/feel? Thanks
They are not. I played both today and the neck shapes are different.
yes exactly the same
i Have both, The D35 Hands down. I really like the way the D35 accompanies my vocals. Way sweeter tone then the D28. Although the D28 really sounds great with the LR Baggs Anthem in it
What's your pic!!
To my ear, listening through a iPad’s speakers, the d28 fit inside the spectrum covered by the d35. The d35 had more boom and a clangier high end. In the middle, the d28 seemed warmer. When strumming, it was the d28 that had a slighter...hmmm...compression maybe... that made it sound balanced. But whenever he hit the Low E or A strings, the d35 projected fullness. I would def rather use the d35 for Folsom Prison, the d28 for crazy on you (especially the intro picking) based on this demo
Nice analysis Armen... I can dig it.
I own a 1980 D35, but I think I prefer this 28.
What strings do you use?
mainly daddario, I am partial to the EJ16
I played a d28 and a hd35 yesterday and decided to scale down my electric collection down to afford one of them
D28 better balance across all frequencies and really pokes out at you. D35 nice and smooth, more smiley face eq curve but doesn't poke out as much.
Right on...
YES one of the best review ...one can hear the difference between D28 and D35
thank you for the kind words my friend.
I like the comparisons very much when the player is using a pick, but in my opinion he should be wearing a thumb pick for the fingerpicking. The bass notes aren’t clear enough for my discretion.
D28 hands down.
0:28, 7:02, 1:33, 8:16
D35 has more sustain and bright sound! I don't know, but D28 has a little bit common sound, but it still the classic of all Martin guitars like D18
D-35 is king. The D-28 sounds great as well. But the bass on the D-35 is fantastic.
28 has that mojo
Perfer the mellow/warmer D28, yes I am biased to the all-wood neck.
D35 has all wood neck as well.
(without binding)
I also hate binding on the neck.
D-28 ❤️
love D-28s
The two best guitar of Martin.I prefere D 28
This guy could make a cardboard box with a mop Handel neck sound good😂
Another great review....every time I grab a 35 I want it to sound like a 28!!😂
Thanks for the kind words Mike
Mike: Just add brass string pins to the 35 and it will brighten it!
0:28 7:01
Well the d-35 won that one for me!
mahogany for the win
D18
D35 fuller 28 brighter
Watching this from a laptop with poor sound. The D28 is significantly more powerful.
Wow. The D28 has way better clarity, presence, and tone. I can hear all the strings & the wood. The D35 sounded more metallic and lacked that punch the D28 had.
You can’t judge from a video. It also depends on the microphone and other recording factors. Best to audition yourself in person. My Martin guitars do not sound like the majority of the RUclips videos.
You cant compare the difference in sound if you don't A/B them. This video only shows that you have one of each.
That's what the time stamps in the description are for.
@@ianmeadows6351 I didn't even need the time stamp. All you have to do is look for the white binding around the neck that the D28 doesn't have to know when you switched to the D35. Now the time stamps are good if you want to hear the individual compositions compared, but I get it without having to do that. Nice playing man. I have the 28, but only because I am left handed and thought I would have a much harder time finding the 35. I knew I would be happy with either, and I am with what I have.
if you strum d35 if you actually play and pick 28 end of story!
false
The d28 over the 35 I've had in the past two d35s two d28 a twelve string d28 I have now a 1980 d28 and five Taylor's 614ee 814ce dlx v brace 816ce 914ce and baby taylor love them all ,I dont like the new Martin's they went way down hill
Fair enough Mark. I tend to think Martin is building some of the best guitars ever over the past year, from what I've seen. To each their own!
