    I own both: My HD28 has an overshadowing bass, some think the bass drowns out the mid and upper register. Great for Bluegrass. My D28 is very well balanced. Mid, low, and high are almost the same with the bass being the brightest. I think that that if you primarily play Bluegrass instrumentals the HD28 is the guitar for you; if you play instrumentals from several genres or sing, the D28, I think, is best.

      I just bought an HD28 over a D28. Tend to prefer the HD to a standard D. Played both and think the HD is a more nuanced guitar, especially on lead playing, and I'm not a bluegrass player. The bass does stand out, but in a good way. Can't go wrong with either one. Both are just great guitars.

    If your ears are tuned for harmonics, Standard D-28 with a heavy right hand is where the musicality breathes. Bass can’t compensate for that.

    I was really expecting to like the HD28 at least 5x more, but the D28 just seems like THE acoustic guitar. It sounds so classic. Plus because of the non scalloped bracing, the top won’t bell-curve as much at the bridge. Fantastic instruments and a fantastic video. Keep it up!

      I would disagree. I hVe both and the HD28 is a better guitar. Not that the D28 isn’t super awesome but the power of the HD 28 is amazing. And the harder you strum it just gets louder while still producing clear and precise sound. Truly amazing guitar. Jmo

      Agree. HD is too muddy for me, too much going on. It's like having chocolate sprinkles on a chocolate cupcake. I'm not a huge rosewood fan to begin with so it makes sense that the guitar (of the two) that downplays those rosewood tendencies is the one I prefer. I generally lean towards the D-18 but thinking about picking up a D-28.

  • @maxwellfan55
    @maxwellfan55 5 лет назад +79

    The HD-28 actually originates from the early D-28 pattern which Martin first produced back in 1931, complete with herringbone inlay and scalloped bracing. A very popular guitar in its day due to good projection and volume. It is therefore the original D-28, and fair to say the HD-28 reproduces the much desired tone from the 1930's, with the exception of using Brazilian rosewood.
    Martin discontinued scalloping the braces post WW2 because of possible structural issues arising from players using increasingly heavy strings, thereby lifting the spruce tops. As far as I know, Martin still discourage the use of extra heavy gauge strings unless tuned down. The herringbone was also withdrawn post WW2 because of shortages of inlay from Germany. As well as this there were economy reasons, but players kept buying the revamped D-28's during the 50's, the guitar becoming one of Martin's best sellers.
    This guitar continued to be called the D-28 despite these changes. Then in the 1970's, the HD-28 was produced in response to players seeking the early "Golden Era" sound of the original 1930's D-28's. To great success.
    For me the HD-28 has better projection, bass, and a more"open" sound, but others still go for the D-28. Great to have the choice.

      @BeeDee108 4 года назад +3

      @@707king Yes, Martin used Adirondack spruce (also known as red srpuce) for tops and bracing. Not sure when they stopped. WW2, or in the 50's? Most guitars I've played with Adirondack spruce are a fair bit louder than the same, or similar guitars with Sitka spruce tops. So with Adirondack spruce and Brazilian rosewood, those guitars have a lot of projection (red spruce) and perhaps more clarity, or a glassier tone due to the Brazilian RW

      The Martin Standard series does not have GE style bracing pattern. The closest you can get to a pre-war Martin that is in production are the Authentic series. Forward Shifted/Scalloped bracing doesn't equate to Golden Era bracing. It's different construction using shorter bracing and the scallop is more of an even taper up to the center of the X - not a C shape chunk missing from the brace like on HD28s. Along with pre-war Martins having a T-bar truss rod - not an adjustable truss rod. They also have fatter V necks that could be inconsistent even at that time. The bridges and bridge plates are smaller as well on 30s D28s.
      HD28s have always been the modern scalloped (now forward scalloped braced) guitar. It's not comparable to a prewar in any way really.

I pulled in a HD-28 off the wall and a Gibson Songwriter just for comparison expecting to leave with the Guild D-55. Was really disappointed with the Guild and hated the Songwriter as it sounded very dead. The moment I played the HD-28 I was hooked. It rang like crazy and sounded great. A few years ago, I played my d18 alongside a great hd28. It was pretty fun. Even though my d18 is getting a more bass sound, I could really hear that extra bass when I was playing the hd28. I don't use picks when I play, usually my thumb and index finger for my rhythm playing. If my thumb nail grows a bit, it really does sound pretty close to a pick. I have to get used to a softer sound when I have to cut my nails. Having any martin of any kind is truly a joy. Hopefully, someday I'll be able to get a martin hd28 to go along with my d18.

It's a perfect match with my 814ce v class which is a mid/high projection monster, but lacks low end. Love having the choice of two totally different sound signatures depending on my mood. The original D-28’s had herringbone.

    The D-28 sounded like an old friend I knew well. I'm certain I've heard that sound on countless songs.
    The HD-28 was surprisingly more gutsy or robust a sound over the D-28.

    There's no wrong answer here. One of these two guitar's will inspire you assuming you have your heart set on a Martin dreadnought. My advice would be before you make a final decision is to add the Modern Deluxe into the equation.

    I have a Hd-28vr and it is loud as this HD-28. Not to say the D-28 does not sound good, it sounds absolutely great, it just doesn't have the Projection as the HD. I love 'em both. Great guitars. Just depends on the individual. Great Video Fellas, good work.

  • @markhall7951
    @markhall7951 Год назад

    Just listening to the video, the HD wins on tone, which is consistent with other video comparisons I've listened to. But the heavy bass would be my reason for buying a 28, so that's a for what it's worth comment. It'd also be for more bluegrass, old timey playing for me. I tend to think the D is probably more durable. I've played both, but don't own one. I can't remember which one I liked better. I do own a Martin OM, which is my all-time favorite guitar. The brand is solid in quality and warranty-related stuff. It's the only factory-made brand I'd consider for a dreadnought.

    I own an HD28 but in this vid with these guitars, the D28 sounded louder and more defined. The high strings were much punchier. The D28 killed the HD28

      I had the total opposite experience ha. The HD28 was the clear winner to my ears. But that's what makes this stuff great. 2 people can hear the same thing and disagree.

      Roget that,@@RogerThat902!!! I own the HD28 and love it; no need for a video comparison. But given this well-made video, I have to agree that I liked the sound of the HD28 better. I also agree with the "open" impression of the HD28 tone vs the D28 being bright and chimey.

I owned my Grandfather's D35 he purchased new in 76 and I'll easily say my 28 is a way more musical instrument and everyone tries to buy it. D28 earned it's reputation
