This game came out in 1998, which practically means it's brand-new when compared to most of the other games that have made their way into the Hall so far. I'm talking about NFL Blitz '99, the second game in the Blitz franchise and the first one to allow four players to play at the same time. This one is technically exclusive to arcades, as "NFL Blitz 2000" would come home on the Dreamcast and other platforms the following year. Also, there would be one more arcade release after this one, NFL Blitz 2000, which was also bundled in a "Gold Edition" alongside NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC, Midway's final attempt to do an NBA Jam-like game in arcades.
Blitz '99 has an astounding level of depth to it, and in the video I'll attempt to show that off a bit by running a few plays a few different ways. But really it's a mix of strategy, mindgames, and execution... not entirely unlike a fighting game. I don't much care for actual football, but NFL Blitz '99 is an extremely easy pick to end up in The Jeff Gerstmann Hall of Fame.
I love how Jeff's new garage looks almost exactly how I remember his old garage looking.
That’s because Jeff’s Garage is really more of a state of mind than it is an actual location.
Was thinking the same thing. I am a little jealous of what he's still got.
That's because it's like the velvet room in Persona and travels in which a door can appear anywhere that leads to Jeff's soul
Turns out that when your old garage is full of stuff, and your new garage is full of stuff, it tends to look like it is full of stuff.
Mind blown.
@@blueeon Definitely not jealous. Looks more like a source of constant stress than anything enjoyable. Sure, there are some cool things in there, but how fun is an NFL Blitz machine that isn't assembled and you can't even physically reach? And that's one of Jeff's favorite games of all time. Now imagine all the other junk in those piles that is less important. Hoarding vibes.
"Dan Ryckert thought he was pretty good at NFL Blitz."
*Laughs Maniacally*
This game is still fun as hell, awesome pick Jeff!
BEWARE NGAGE. Timeless advice for us all.
I love that Jeff didn’t bother with the field goal from the two with three seconds left and went for the Barry Sanders walk-off TD. 31:57
Jeff just put out the call and hundreds of 34 to 48 year old nerds will come help you pearl that garage in an afternoon.
What an honor to be given access to such hallowed ground.
He got too good at a thing to enjoy it against others anymore. Jeff is truly the One Punch Man of NFL Blitz '99
I love you Jeff GerstmanN! Your passion for this game was so fun to listen in on, finally after all these years.
"I want to find my cdi" You are a braver man then I.
Always loved playing this and 2000 on the N64. Didn't get many opportunities to play the arcade version but when I did I had fun.
So many memories with this game.
I was the big fish in the little pond of our bowling alley. I put so much money in that cabinet they should have gave it to me.
I think the most surprising thing I saw in the garage was the Punisher hardcovers.
Wish I had that Trinitron.
I've been waiting for a substantially sized piece of Blitz/Jeff content for too fucking long.
The more you know about real football the worse you do in NFL Blittz.
Always fascinating to see Jeff talk about a game he is undisputably good at.
Have some great memories forever associated with Day of the Tentacal. Really cool seeing the rare triangular box up there.
Jeff, you need a studio. With those cabinets in the background on demo mode. And NGages hanging like tinsel.
THE MOMENT WE HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR -- REJOICE
I’m in Springfield, MA all the time!
It's funny you have disdain for real football when a lot of the reasons you have for loving this game also hold true for the real sport. It's a great strategical game with a lot of depth, just has a bit of a learning curve to get all of the nuance.
Yeah!!! Great version of Blitz to be inducted into the illustrious Jeff Gerstmann HOF!
Great to see another episode of CollectSHUN after all these years
Jeff, you need to try some Legend Bowl!
played the hell out of '01 on the PS1, always adored the blitz series
Blitz is certainly worthy of such an honor. 2000 was super fun as a kid but yeah, those 4 player games always devolved into nonsense and lost the purity.
World’s biggest Expos fan, Jeff Gerstmann
Smooth 60fps makes so much difference. That still impresses me and looks good on this and games like Daytona.
For what it’s worth, as someone who’s never seen the Blitz trophy, it almost looks intentionally carved that way.
did the original gauntlet invent "pay to win" with its draining health you could restore with quarters?
I was real good at this game too lol. Nobody at school wanted to play me. That waggle was the key
NBA Jam, Blitz, and the super under appreciated NHL OPEN ICE a gilded age of arcade sports games
Jeff: You got a lot of stuff in that garage!
Good lord Jeff, nice hat!
My heart fucking broke seeing that trophy smashed up 😢
Glad to see my lions on the thumbnail!
Blitz and showtime plays well on my end too just stumbles a bit did u lower the sample rate to play it at 100%?
I guess I’m a bit of a heathen for only having played Blitz 2000 on my N64 but I still absolutely love that game
The home versions of 2000 are largely based on '99, but after playing the arcade version so much it was always tricky to pass as precisely on an analog stick.
Les Expos!!
Hate to say it, but that glass award should have been packaged up tight. It was just asking to get Shattered by laying around in the open.
Best sports game ever made as far as I’m concerned and I’m EXTREMELY concerned
Two words: Da Bomb
Smoking cigs while slamming shots. . good timea.
I do not understand how a man can live in such a chaotic mess. His garage is giving me hives.
He doesn't live in his garage...
Arcade games and old Dreamcast/SEGA games are still cool(well, minus Sonic). Somehow they've managed to not get ruined by shitty fanbases like so much else. Nintendo is just fucking tainted.
Haha beware n gage
Hearing Jeff saying football terminology almost makes me wish he would get into NFL football. Then I could harass his videos with anti 49ers rhetoric
