One of the funnest jobs I had about 30 years ago was being able to drive performers to a music venue when they performed. I was fortunate and also requested from my boss to please let me drive Bob Newhart! I loved his shows and watched them growing up. So I was supposed to pick him up in the early evening, but his flight got delayed so I would be picking him up at about 1 a.m. When I arrived at the airport I started to get really nervous because I was about to meet this legend and person I had watched on tv all these years! (It was a few months after the Newhart show had its genius episode 1990 or so). It was just Bob and his manager and they where so nice. I drove them to the hotel which is an hour away and dropped them off, the next night was his show which I went to and went backstage to say hello. (Another person wanted to drive him to, so they drove them to and from the show). I got to drive them back to the airport the next day, I wish I could remember everything that was said, but I had a great time. Bob's manager asked me for my phone number and asked if I could see if there where any press clippings. His manager called me when they got back to California and thanked me again for being a great driver and if I did see anything in the paper to call or send it their way. I have a picture of me and Bob Newhart at the airport. This is a long post, but I just wanted to share with everyone that my experience with meeting him was wonderful and he is as friendly and real as it gets! These days it's hard to say that about a lot of celebrities. Even 30 years later it is still a thrill to tell the story! Thanks for reading if you made it this far! :)
Elf made Bob Newhart a legend is like saying Pleasentville made Don Knotts a legend. What both movies did was bring a new generation to the already-established legends.
How many know Pleshette was the teacher swarmed by THE BIRDS. Her voice. Bob's shows were elegant and charming as he. His wife was one lucky woman. Back then meeting men wasnt so risky.
@@barbarabrennan1753 , Yes. She also had been married to Troy Donahue. Her last husband was Tom Postum thàt played George Utley on Newhart. I saw Tom in a romcom play in Ivoryton, Conn. Back in the day. He was supporting actor to William Shatner.......
Bob is a legend! I've never even seen the movie Elf! As for his later tv roles, he's awesome in The Big Bang Theory! And I agree that he is influential! ❤️
His role in ELF helped make him a comedy legend? His role in *ELF*? Like he hadn't established himself as a comedy legend well before that? Dang, we really are pandering to the Millennials, aren't we?
Elf helped make him a comedy legend? Uh, NO. Seriously? This is an A rated journalists open? Please, he was already a legend and that's why they asked him to do Elf. Which is a great movie.
I agree, that was quite an odd thing to say. My take is CBS Sunday Morning is trying to attract younger viewers but they need to know their actual audience.
@THE MECHANIC Yeah, I think they were showing his range through the decades. As a kid I remember The Bob Newhart Show, as a teenager it was Newhart. When he showed up in Elf and subsequently Big Bang Theory I was just happy he still had his talent/deadpan humor.
Agreed, wholeheartedly! Umm, most of us can hear Suzanne Plechette's voice call, "Baaahhb" when we think of Mr. Newhart. He's stamped in my brain with Hawkeye and Meathead.
You're right. He was established as a legend for several years before Elf. That had nothing to do with it. He's a national treasure and yeah Elf is a good movie
This is a wonderful tribute to one of my favorite comedians. We never missed a Saturday night with his show in that fabulous comic lineup. My favorite episode, they went to an ice cream parlor and Bob wanted to avoid all the birthday hoopla. So he ordered a simple ice cream dish. The waiters came to his table and sang anyway, single scooper single scooper. This guy is a party pooper. Hilarious.
I've seen him twice. Once at Harrahs, Lake Tahoe in 1973 with Diane Cannon. It was a three drink minimum show, and my buddies and I were not yet 21. Then a few years ago in a small theatre in El Cajon, Ca. Same jokes, same cadence, same Bob. Still one of the funniest humans on the planet. Thanks Bob. 🙏💪🌎🌏❤️🎥🖖

His beautiful style of comedy echos around the world! One of the last remaining gemstone from the treasure chest of a bygone era! A fan and an admirer from Pakistan!!
I don't mean this comment to be just a needy brag because I mean every word of it. Born in 1967, I grew up with Bob on TV making me laugh. My Dad had a couple of his albums which I would listen to over and over. I was a teenager when the 2nd Newhart show was on TV in the 80's. I grew up to work as an actor in several Broadway shows. All comedies. At a couple of the shows in which I had good parts, I spotted Mr. Newhart in the audience in the first 5 rows. I was always so excited to know he was there. Both times when I knew I had a laugh lines coming up in my roles or a bit that was sure to get a laugh, I would seek out his face to see if he was laughing. Not very professional but I had to know. I never got to meet him, but it was one of the greatest thrills of my working life to see that I was making Bob laugh instead of the other way around. Seriously, for me, it didn't get any more satisfying.
God Bob, we love you so much! Thank you for everything you have done to make us laugh. So glad to see you still have your beautiful mind. I never saw the ending to the Bob Newhart Show, but it sounds so in keeping with his style. Bob is so modest, yet so perceptive. "I made people laugh." I only wish my life had such purpose! God Bless you Bob, and thank you for making my life more bearable.
Bob Newhart is one of the best - I've been watching him since I was a little girl. His comedy is timeless. I frequently think of some of his linesvwhen I'm a little Dow. He always helps to put a smile on my face
Ben did a fantastic profile of this truly great icon of comedy. Bob has had decades of entertaining his fans and this brought back so many great moments. A true joy to watch.
I know it is crazy, but I go to sleep every night watching his show from the 80s. Vermont and the Stratford is where I go every night to escape the craziness of this world (and find my smile). It is a small thing but very important to me. I know that many feel as I do, that Mr. Newhart is a true celebrity in a world where the word is used loosely. He is an icon and irreplaceable.
This was one of our amazingly great comedians. Just watch any one of his shows or Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson appearances. His albums were great for there time and our time. Amazing I love this guy! Rickles and this man were the greatest of friends
To me, Bob is my comedic hero. The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart are truly terrific, and are still among my favorite shows. He’s the only actor I know I’d be genuinely floored to meet. I’m glad he got his well deserved Emmy on The Big Bang Theory. It was long overdue. A true icon that never failed to make me laugh.
When I hear someone younger say they have never heard of him I start to tell his funniest monologues but end up advising them to go listen as there are too many I love! The one about the submarine crew, the bomb one I honestly crease up just thinking about them. I still have an LP to listen to but utube is terrific too. Enjoy him.
I have never used the word "BELOVED" before, but, Man does it suit him. Aged a great deal since I saw him last. 91 and famous for 60 years. Yes, he is the Beloved Bob Newhart
What a great legendary man. Tremendously influential, even though he apparently hates that. The Bob Newhart Show was a pillar of my childhood Saturday nights.
I grew up listening to the comedy records of Bob Newhart and Bill Cosby. Funny, family friendly but biting enough for adults, and just truly entertaining. It hurt so much to find out Cosby was the type of person he is but my heart sings over Newhart being a genuinely nice guy, a good person, and is just plain funny.
Right! Elf was just a cherry on top of an incredible comedic career. He was a veteran performer long before Elf. The final Newhart episode was comic genius!!!!
