Cheers Jim, nice thorough analysis once again.
Another great video Jim with plenty of informative content! 👍
Thanks!
I love my Odin. I like your video keep up the good work.
Same! Odin is awesome! Thanks for watching.
i was going to pick up the Odin about three months ago, but then i decided to try out some cheap google pixels i found on ebay paired with a razer kishi. it turned out way better than i had hoped and now that's my dedicated gaming setup. i had assumed my pixel 3 was just underpowered, but i guess some ps2 games are still harder to run even on more powerful hardware.
anyway, the pixel is working out great for me since i'm playing through all the retro games first and doing all the easier to run games on ps2/gamecube. not to mention the ps1 and psp libraries are gigantic and they both run perfectly. once i get my steamdeck, i'll run all the harder stuff on that one
Thanks for the vid!
I like the games selection. Are those your fav ps2 games?
Yes mostly my favourite games. I try to test either the most popular games or games that I've played a lot in the past. I also have tested more PS2 games (50 games over 2 videos) but on a Poco F3 using the AetherSX2 emulator - videos are on my channel a couple of weeks before this one.
Thanks for the great video jim. I'm excited about this cause I never had a PS2 so a bunch of these games are on my list to play when I get mine!
A straight forward reviews of Odin, strengths & weakness are well mentioned. Unlike Taki's one... which kinda gave an impression of perfect PS2/GC emulation, many flaws aren't mentioned in his video and he also didn't provides and show the fps very clearly. I think his RP2+ video also gave the same impression of PS2 capable emulation🤦♂️🤷♂️
I think Taki's videos generally shows what works on the systems, and there might be a few games that doesn't. I think he does a lot of testing in the background anyway and knows what works.
For me, I started on the Poco F3 and tested 50 games on PS2, games I wanted to personally play and see what worked and what didn't. I narrowed it down to 20 games for the Odin (I meant to come back and do more PS2 testing, but maybe later!) I wanted to show games that worked and ones that didn't.
They're just different approaches, but I hoped you liked the video anyway.
Which version of aether are you using? The latest one brings much improvements to older CPUs.
Alpha 1334 Feb 26. Yeah I heard about that. ill update it for the next PS2 video.
Virtua Tennis 2 for the Dreamcast is the greatest tennis game of that generation and in fact one of the greatest of any generation IMO.
Smash Court is good though, I’ll give you that, as is Top Spin for the Xbox. ‘Twas a great console generation for tennis fans.
The fact that this is playing PS2 games at all is getting me very excited!
Same! PS2 games is where its at!
Any possible way you could post ncaa football 06 for ps2 on odin? Im gettin a pro 256gb in may and wanna know if it will run that.
This devine change my life now i can play on the go that’s What nintendont 😁😂
Area 51 has an old ass pc port. So I wonder if Odin under windows will make it work better. The pc version was also free (legit free) at some point as well
Can you please test yu yu hakusho dark tournament? It doesn't seem to work on aethersx2 for android
Any cheats colde for ayn onid video games on your system ?
Anyone try Tony Hawk's Underground? That's still my favorite Tony Hawk.
Excellent video!
So, I have a Poco F3.... should I buy the Gamesir X3 for $99 USD, or the Odin for about $270 USD? Or.... wait for the Loki or Aya Neo Air Plus??
I have a poco f3 and gamesir x2. If u already have that and happy with it just go with that (x2 is much cheaper too). Also yeah if u can wait for air plus (in six months) I’d do that and u can use it on steam games.
@@JimRPG Thanks :) Will order a Gamesir and wait until the one's come out which can also handle Steam (sounds good! Might even be easier to play 'Hell Let Loose' on the console.. bloody hard). Subscribed (especially because you are in Australia as well).
Are you changing between OpenGL and Vulkan to see performance and graphic issue/glitch differences?
No I'm just using Vulkan for all games. When I have a game that doesn't perform well, I do try to change it to OpenGL and play a bit but usually it doesn't help.
Change the audio setting synchronization async mix it solve audio problem
Use Widescreen hacks on aethersx2 or activate the 16:9 screen size on the games which allow it, Gran Turismo 4 on widescreen in a tiny screen is just amazing
Is this the Odin lite or pro?
well for GTA i think the android options are a way better option for Odin pro instead emulation
Unless something better or similar comes out, for a price.. I may get Odin down the track at sone point.
But also very interested to see videos on the Lite and see how that performs.
Steamdeck is pretty good
@@Crayolapup
Yeah.
But not available to me as yet and personally I doubt Id get one anyway for various reasons.
Does this have The Warriors on it?
Hell yea
How does silent hill 2 run?
Do you prefer the poco f3 or odin version? I have an odin pro waiting to be delivered at some stage. I have a fold 3 but might get a poco f3 until my odin arrives then give the poco f3 to my son
Very tough choice. Probably Odin, but only slightly. I'm missing some games I'd like on the Odin like Colin McRae Rally 04, Baldurs Gate DA. It depends on what games you're missing out on. Odin plays everything else though. If the game plays the same - then Id choose Odin.
Does it have any Teen Titans games?
Did you try running the games on 'unsafe' settings in Aethersx2?
Unsafe?
@@JimRPG when you are in aetherSX2 go to 'reset settings' then choose 'unsafe' mode. You can often get a smidge better performance from games. Starting with unsafe mode and then I tweaked further settings. I managed to get Champions of Norrath to run at 2x, on wide-screen and it ran pretty well for a tough emulated game.
That was on my Google Pixel 3. Which suffers from throttling and doesn't have the performance options like the Odin.
Mgs2 is also likely not entirely playable. From reports the game runs the first mission well but after you start playing with Raiden there's some effect that aethersx2 just can't emulate or skip and slow downs. Even on phones
Cheers! Thanks! I didn't get THAT far. Because MGS2 is so popular I suspect it could get fixed.
All your games look fun should’ve posted the list
Does PAL version run better compare to NTSC in same game?
You have to consider all the possibilities. Games are either at 30 or 60FPS.
For 30FPS games - the US version is at 30FPS and the PAL version is 25FPS. Therefore the US version is usually better. 25FPS is much slower.
For 60FPS games - the US version is 60FPS and the PAL version is 50FPS (though sometimes they offer 60FPS toggle at the start). Sometimes Odin is not strong enough to handle 60FPS and the framerate can dip and is very uneven. If it hovers around 45/50/55 - it can be better to use the PAL 50FPS version as its more consistent.
How can I buy this
I see a lot of mixed criticisms, from what I’ve seen in comments on other videos is that a good amount of ps2 works? I don’t know. I guess we’ll have to wait and see for more footage! I hope you can test Bully, I really want to play that on it 🤔😳
Make a list of the games you want to play and see if it plays them. The Odin could possibly play 60-70% of PS2 games well, but if it doesn't play the games you want, then its not worth it.
No one ever really testes the Armored Core games on systems like these. I want to know how THOSE do.
id like to try armored core tbh
@@JimRPG Alright! hell yeah! Huge fan of Those tittles. It's sad that not many folk want to really play them or test things with those games. Have fun if you ever get around to them :)
@@InDeath Love em on my vita
Baldurs gate dark alliance is extremely hard to emulate even on pc. What you can do is enable fast texture invalidation and skip hardware reads. It will make it better but the whole game is probably not playable
The weirdest thing is - it doesn't run well on my SD870 Poco F3, and then after 10 mins, it ran perfectly - i don't know if its because i turned on a setting or what, but its extremely smooth, but before that it was very slow.
Can anyone tell me if Spider-Man 2 ps2 game will play properly in this handheld
I didn't test but maybe someone else did...
how long before they go world wide retail? and not indiegogogogowith your money
Good question, I don't know anymore. They've been quiet on that.
I will say that at least now its 'in demand' so its like a shorter preorder. So if you order now - you get it say in 1-2 months.
Why would you think the ps2 version holds up better? The GameCube version is higher resolution and has more content, and dolphin is more stable than aethersx2 as well. The GameCube version even runs better on Android despite emulating more powerful hardware.
Baldurs Gate have to PC now, dont need emulator more😌😌🙏🙏
Yeah just play BG1 and 2 on Steam. :)
If you are trying to play PS2 games you are better off with a good phone, like a Pixel 6 or 7 and controller such as a razor kishi. You will be able to upscale and run many games at a solid 60 fps. Playing PS2 games at less than optimal performance will cause many games to slow down and speed up constantly. I'm not saying this is a bad device but just temper your expectations for what you are trying to do
You could just run the GTA games natively.
Haha actually i should try that.
Where is black and smack down here come the pain....the famous game in ps2
Black - Techutopia played it on a Snapdragon 860 and didn't play that great. Smack Down yeah awesome game. Maybe another video!
The Odin is JUST not quite powerful enough I'm afraid...it is so close, but not quite there for PS2.
I hope there will be something as good hardware wise (apart from the faults....) and with that little extra bit of oooof.
Aether really has changed the game though, awesome emulator.
Yeah AetherSX2 works with a lot of games already!
Has nothing at all to do with the device power. The reason the games slowdown and don't run well is the emulator. These emulators don't always work properly, they take years and years to get even somewhat functional most of the time.
Even on a pc with a brand new 3090 and the fastest i9 available, water cooled with 128gb ram you still couldn't run every ps2 game. You couldn't even run every n64 and ps1 game correctly.
To anyone thinking about getting an odin or loki,....dont!!!!! Ayn just screwed me over bad. Customer service is horrible and rude. Can't keep shipping dates because there only putting out 50 to zero a day . Take my advice and stay away from AYN!!!!!
Shit happens! We do have to deal with that. Maybe you are unlucky one among many satisfied from that company
Answer? No. Not a legit PS2 handheld. 😢
Hey subzero, any particular reason you don't like it?
@@JimRPG what do you mean? Most games are not running well. I don't see how you reached the conclusion you did with the results you had. I have the same poco f3 + x2 combo you do and it absolutely destroys the Odin. And that's without the fan and while upscaling. Costing about the same or less. You're really doing your subscribers a disservice here, recommending this as a ps2 handheld with those results.
@@otogiokami In my conclusion I said GTA III, Vice City, Final Fantasy XII, DQVIII, Gran Turismo, Devil May Cry 3 SE, MGS2, Resident Evil 4 all run great on the Odin. There are some games like Baldurs Gate DA, Colin McRae 04 that run better on the Poco F3. I recommend people check out those videos I did on that, to see which games run on Poco F3 and which ones don't on the Odin. But generally speaking Odin plays a lot of PS2 games. There are a lot of people who want a dedicated handheld rather than a mobile and controller. Btw the Odin Base is $240, and the Poco F3 and controller is $350.
Btw im not here for the mobile/handheld war. I don't get why everything has to be turned into an argument, and one thing has to be better than another. There are pros and cons to everything. Buy what you want to buy. 🤷♂️
@@JimRPG Dude what war. There is no war. The question was if the Odin was the first legit ps2 handheld. Based on your footage, even for the games you say are running well, the answer does seem to be a no. It looks like a great emulation handheld, just not really when it comes to ps2. Also the Poco f3 can be had for much cheaper than that. And you don't even need the f3 in the first place, as there are lots of cheap snapdragon 865/870 phones out there that will run circles around the Odin when it comes to ps2 emulation. But sure buy whatever makes you happy.
