    Great review! I would really like to see a video on your Ultimate Odin setup and playing SNES in wide screen. I enjoy hearing about these devices with the Pros and Cons to have all options. While I don't have any of these handhelds yet I like to be informed before I pull the trigger. Maybe they'll fix the issues with the dock, that's the main con but other wise in handheld more seems almost perfect.

    Yeah, I ordered mine a few months back, and it should hopefully be shipping within 1-2 weeks, if estimates are to be believed. I got the dock, but not because I really wanted it, but because the color system I wanted was only offered in the bundle, so why not? I'm a portable gamer 99% of the time, so I never had much use for the dock, but it looks decent enough. That vent issue, and upside down GC ports is a HUGE WTF!? moment for sure, but otherwise, seems OK overall. The bundle also includes their specific carry case, and that looks like the best option for sure. So I'm very much looking forward to mine, and I'll probably just use that dock for charging purposes. Thanks for the vid.

    I knew about the Odin very early in their campaign but I've been burned with crowd funding before and I wanted to wait and see the reviews once it was shipped. After several videos yours was one of the most educative and helpful. I already have a RG351M from Anbernic and I am pretty happy with my retro library. I wanted something to play Dreamcast, Atomiswave and Gamecube. I am between this device or raise a little extra money and get in line for the Steam Deck. After this video I think I can save some money and get all I want with this one.

      Wow thanks so much for watching! I think the biggest difference between Odin & Steam Deck will be the size. Odin seems way more “pocketable” or travel friendly. But I won’t have my Steam Deck until October so can’t say for sure if that’s how I’ll feel once I get it 😅

    after i gave away my retroid pocket 2+ (really liked that handheld) i was seriously looking into this to be my next handheld device. however, i started looking into used phones and i stumbled onto the pixel 3 which i found out that it also has the snapdragon 845. long story short, i now run a pixel 3 XL with a razer kishi strictly for gaming, and have a pixel 3 as my phone.
    sure there are some downsides like the battery only having 2600mAh, no sd card, and no 3.5mm port, but it's still working out really well for me. however, if for any reason i get rid of my current set up, the Odin will definitely be my next option

    I tried an Xbox One Controller, a PS4 controller (wired/wireless both) and an original N64 controller but the input lag just will not go away...

    • @ScatteredBrain
      @ScatteredBrain  2 года назад +1

      So this doesn’t just “work out of the box” this was basically a ROM Hack + a pretty powerful Retroarch core (emulator) for SNES to essentially “fast forward” the screen to decide what to show. That’s at least my basic understanding 😅

  • @JustinAZ

    • @ScatteredBrain
      @ScatteredBrain  2 года назад +1

      I did in my first impressions of the dock. It does work but it’s kind of annoying to set up. You need to go into the game settings and map which controller goes to which port. The Mupen64 app actually tries to simplify this a bit with kind of an “auto port detection” but it didn’t consistently work for me.
      But the good thing is I didn’t see any noticeable lag!

  • @SpikeStarkey
    @SpikeStarkey 2 года назад

    For the issues with control mapping switching, that's really more on the app developers than on AYN.
    You should also be able to save multiple input configs within the emulators, so you can switch controls with a single tap or two, not have to go through each button again and again.
    That's a complaint I've seen all over the subreddit and I never really understood why people blamed Ayn/Odin. That's how the emulators work across android and on pc...

      Take a look at the Ayn Loki - it's their "answer" to the Steam Deck and the influx of Windows handheld gaming devices. It of course comes at a bit of a premium, but the hypothetical power increase you'll get could be awesome!

    I realllllyyy wanted an Odin pro. I'd prefer the form factor for a travel device. But the price being so close to a more powerful device like the Steam Deck makes it much less attractive

    In a couple of months, this will all be old news. Some pretty beefy handhelds coming to the affordable market this year. If you haven't ordered an AYN Odin yet, I'd hold off a tad longer and wait to see where things shake out this year. (You've already waited this long, what's another couple of months? ;))

    • @ScatteredBrain
      @ScatteredBrain  2 года назад +2

      The rate of new retro handhelds coming to market is really INSANE. I do however hope the Ayn Odin holds up. It’s really becoming my preferred device at this point. Even with something slightly more powerful, it seems we always need to compromise - Odin feels like a good “meet in the middle” balance between hardware and software.
      But then again that’s what’s so great about this retro handheld community! So many choices that hopefully these companies making retro devices will push each other to strive for the “perfect device” one day!

    • @summersky77
      @summersky77 2 года назад

      @@ScatteredBrain Indeed, friend. I ordered my Ayn Odin late last year and I've yet to receive it. So this is why I'm telling people to please hold off because at this rate, it could be 6 months and lots changes in that time. I ended up getting an Anbernic RG552 in January as a placeholder as I didn't know how long I'd be without the Odin. Glad I did. While the RG552 is far from perfect, it at least lets me do 85% of what I want at native resolution. The Odin can't get here fast enough! lol
      Cheers :)

    Despite not owning nor wanting an Odin, I often play on my Android Tablet with an 8bitdo SN30 Pro 2 and an M30 and I have to switch my inputs on emulators, what I did was browsing the RetroArch folders to find my per core gamepad maps, then I've made a copy of one of the files, renamed to M30, went back to RetroArch, loaded that mapping, remade it and saved it again.
    Now it's just a matter of loading that button mapping easily!
    Maybe you guys who use the odin and the dock could do something similar at least for systems that are available on RetroArch

    Just want one for PS2 and GameCube games. Is it worth it?

    • @ScatteredBrain
      @ScatteredBrain  2 года назад +1

      It would depend on specifically which games. Since the entire PS2 and GameCube library won’t run perfect, it all depends. My personal opinion is no - its not worth it… invest in an Ayaneo Next or something that is guaranteed, but its certainly more costly.

    The remapping/external controller thing I think is the biggest hindrance from Switch-level convenience
    Using an older Snapdragon 845 phone that can use a USB-C dock/HDMI out, and any Bluetooth controller can be more convenient
    So! I'm hoping AYN or future companies make like, small Snapdragon devices that have Bluetooth/connected controllers, with a dock (aka, a retail hacked Switch)

    u complained about aiming in halo infinite, but your input lag was teeeerrible there, I counted 8 frames here (11:50) in between your input, and the response on screen
    I think your hard time aiming has more to do with the input lag of cloud gaming and less about the analog sticks. Also if it was the analog sticks, u would also have had a hard time aiming at COD mobile
    edit: for comparison, I counted only 4-5 frames in COD mobile here (11:40), thats pretty much double the input lag, its very noticable

    • @ScatteredBrain
      @ScatteredBrain  2 года назад +1

      Good observations. That definitely could be the case. I felt like I just didn’t get a great range of motion in Halo / GamePass. I had to turn the sensitivity up in COD Mobile to the max to get it comfortable. I also assume I was one of the few players in the game playing with a controller, so maybe a bit of an advantage 🤔😅
