I Converted our Backyard Shed into the PERFECT Home Office

- We converted our TUFF Shed into a tiny home office for me to work from home. I have to admit, I wasn't so sure that I was going to like this but Brooke's idea of building a shed into a mini office for me came out great! This will allow Brooke and the boys to have the space they need in the house and allow me to get some work done while working from home (WFH). I hope you all enjoy the process of bringing this work from home office setup to life.
Could be used as a she-shed, workshop, studio, or even an extra bedroom if we have guests and need a place to put them.
For more details on how we converted this shed including links to materials we used check out our blog post at killebrewkrewe...

Very nice conversion. Easy to follow and love the set-up.
I would love to do this. I'm a therapist and I would like to use the shed office for teletherapy. I have family living with me and I need peace and quiet for my clients.
Yes this is perfect for that. Do it!
Thank you for sharing...really great space!
This is a great idea!!! I am considering of doing the same thing.
Looks great. Some good resale value there!!!
Right? Everyone wants a wfh office now-a-days
this is nice and more realistic of what i want to do for an outdoor office….. can you give an estimated cost for the entire project? was shed needed to go on a foundation?
I love you guys!!! So so cool! Xoxo -Aunt Dom Dom
I’m in a vastly different climate (Pacific Northwest) and am in the process of converting my 200sq ft Tuff Shed into an office space. The ceiling has the radiant vapor barrier like yours. Drywall and insulation contractors won’t touch the ceiling because of that vapor barrier and ventilation. Two have told me that baffles are required (which is an easy fix) but with 2x4s and the studs being 24” on center, that won’t leave much room for fiberglass insulation. The other problem I’ve learned after loads of research and talking to insulators is that insulating over the vapor barrier will 1. negate the function and efficiency of the barrier, and 2. create the perfect trap for excessive heat and moisture which eventually leads to all the problems. So, I’m curious about your ceiling insulation, are there baffles? Either way, how are you keeping the airflow between the vapor barrier and the insulation circulating? Have you noticed any issues yet now that you’re over a year in? (PS: I can’t get Tuff Shed to give me any answers about the ceiling and insulation, so any advice you have is great!!)
So great! Do you mind sharing how much was it to install the electrical? (I’m thinking about doing the same with my shed)
Electrical work was about $1600 all said and done.
@@KillebrewKrewe thank you so much!
You can have 5kw of battery/solar power for roughly $3k now if you're handy enough. Will power a small 500-700 watt (8000btu which is plenty for the shed) AC unit + computer inside all day. Completely off grid. You have the option to run an extension cord to charge up the batteries on cloudy/rainy days.
This is Incredible. I enjoyed it. Im curious will you add a ceiling fan too.
Most likely not. The room is only 100 sqft and the ac mini split has a fan that’s able to create some good air flow.
Great job, and good to see a build in a hurricane zone. I am planning on building an outdoor office shed and it is great to see the job you did. What are the dimensions of your shed?
Being in a hurricane zone was a big reason we went with the tuff shed instead of framing it myself. They had all the wind mitigation and hurricane building code requirements and it came with a 15 yr warranty. That plus it sped up my timeline dramatically and with twins on the way we had a deadline.
The shed is 12x8 and is the perfect space for a home office. Basically a good sized bonus room.
Love it!
Thanks for sharing! I live just a bit south of you and I’m putting in one of the studio sheds very soon for the same purpose of a home office. I was curious to see how it would work out in Florida with the hot temperatures!
If you insulate and get an AC it’s great. Biggest thing to combat down here in FL really is the humidity. You can’t allow humidity to rot your shed.
@@KillebrewKrewe thanks so much!! Did you get a split unit AC? Also what size is your shed? LOL sorry to pick your brain!
@@JMB6095 I did. I got a mr. Cool diy mini split. The shed I’m working in is 8x11. I had to keep it under 100 sqft to avoid needing to permit
@@KillebrewKrewe interesting! We need a permit in Sarasota county irregardless. Thanks so much!!
Thank you daddy!
I don't see why a 14 Year Old needs his own office but, man, this is sick. lol - Awesome work!
14 year olds take digs at people in the comment section. This guy is supporting a family of 4. Understand what manhood really looks like.
@@greaterdepthsBlog LOL Allrighty then, Partner.
You look like you’re twelve and you started this video “hey boys” and I had no idea who you were talking to or why. Very weird intro.
Once you got to the conversion I really appreciated all the additional info that you gave. You gave so so much info that people gloss over and as someone who is about to do all of this myself I really appreciate that.
When we initially filmed this video, we didn’t really expect it to get the traction it did. We really posted it as a personal way to store a memory and tell a story to our soon to be twin boys later in their life how Dad got his office. If you look at our channel, you’ll see that was its original intent.
That being said I’m glad you got value out of this video! It’s our first RUclips video and we learned a ton about video editing and I think each video we’ve put out since has gotten even better in quality. Thanks for watching and the kind words!
Looks fantastic, is it still holing up well? I wonder how much the total cost was.
love the office
Thanks! It’s served me well so far
I thought you were about 15 and pranking us by imitating your "dad." 😂😂😂
Turned out so great!! What’s your next project??
How about birthing two boys?
What did the electricians charge you?
Awesome
don't like the narrowed camera shot but I guess it's a nice job
Save everyone else the trouble: the guy said it was 12x8 on the exterior. less than 90sqft inside
Hi, how many square feet is the shed, and how much did it cost you?
Thanks for making this video - we are considering doing almost the exact same thing in our backyard. What type of foundation did you use for the shed? Also congrats on the twins!
We had some pavers over gravel already in place that was used as a parking pad by previous owners that we put the shed on top of.
@@KillebrewKrewe do you have any problem with rain water getting into shed on gravel?
This is exactly what I need
I loved the tuff shed shell to start. Gave me hurricane straps and a 15 year warranty covering the structure.
This is exactly what I was looking to add to my backyard and I'm in Clearwater small world. Few questions, I'm looking to game and watch movie in mine so I don't wake the little ones, does it do a good job trapping the sounds so you don't bother the neighbors? Also when you dug a hole how did you know where to avoid utility wires and stuff like that and did you run cat5 as well? Thanks again
Love the idea of this being a gaming spot. It’s as sound proof as you make it. Mine is not the most sound proof but I didn’t insulate it for that really. The windows I have are also allow sound to escape pretty easily. But if you insulate with sound material and limit your windows you could lock it up tight. I called 811 before I dug anything and they told me where everything was. I didn’t have bandwidth concerns so I didn’t run cat5, just use a mesh WiFi network.
Hi there. Thinking about doing the same thing. Would you mind sharing the total cost of this project?
What is with the vertical cam? are you unable to turn your phone sideways?
Nice job! 😉👍🏼
Thanks! 👍
Are you still happy with this office? I live in Tampa and considering doing this. Since we live so close I may even be able to use your contractors lol. How much did you spend in the end for everything? Hoping under $15k
Looks great. I’m currently estimating the cost to run electric a shed from my house and add a 60A sub panel to shed. If that can be done for a reasonable, cost, I will be modeling the project after this shed, but may go a touch bigger.
I wish I had gone for the 10x12 but that would have meant I needed to get the whole project permitted which would have dramatically extended my timeline. Overall this is perfect space for a home office but I wish I had just a little bit more so I could fit some gym equipment also. We’ve got a rower and I’d love it in there with me.
@@KillebrewKrewe I live in Illinois and it is current close to 2 degrees. Hoping the mini split does its job. Technically converting a shed to a living space is frowned upon, but I will cross that bridge when I get to it. Good to know about the room size. I am thinking the 10x12 now that you mention the exercise equipment. I have a spin bike I want to set it in this when finished.
Cool project - I’m looking to do something similar. I’m curious: It looks like you don’t have any vents on the shed. Do you have any issues with ventilation? Does the air get stale if you’re in there working for a few hours? If you leave the shed unattended for a few days, does it get super hot?
Check out our channel we’ve got a video on our Mr Cool DIY mini split that we added to this shed. That bad boy keeps the air dry and cool all hours of the day. I’m in the shed 8 hours a day m-f. If it smells from what I have for lunch I can open the doors and windows and all fresh! Thanks for checking out the video though, glad you enjoyed it
How much did this cost?
Very nice! What size/brand of mini split ac did you get and how many sf does your office shed have?
The mini-split is an 18k MRCOOL unit. It cools the ~100 sqft super quickly but the main reason is moisture control down in FL. I got it off amazon and it was pretty easy to DIY. Here is a link to the unit I bought: amzn.to/3uFbmf9
Hi This looks nice... Please suggest how much this project cost in terms materiel and overall cost.
Love the videos and the Shed. Looking at doing one for myself as well. My question to you is when I go on the tuff shed site to design my shed, I can't seem to find the glass doors you have or the small windows on the back side as options, were you able to have Tuff Shed build that for you or had you redone those items prior to starting your video??
Great build! I'm thinking of doing something similar and was also looking at Tuff Shed. I was curious about your slanted ceiling and how tall is it at its shortest and tallest points.
I don’t remember exactly but I know we had to work with Tuff shed to get a custom cut on the high part to work around needing to get permit if it was too high. Work with your rep at Tuff Shed to customize it how you want/need.
Amazing inspiration. Massive thanks. I have a large lot here in downtown Santa Barbara, and an 11 year old boy.
Planning to build out a TuffShed just like this for him.
If I may ask - what was your overall labor costs (not shed purchase cost) for this project?
And overall time, start to finish?
Thank you! - AB in Santa Barbara, California and Sabah, Borneo @ Sea Dragon Adventures
Have fun with your own shed project!
This overall took us about 2 weeks to complete. The labor costs were $1600 for electrical and $3200 for insulation, drywall and painting.
@@KillebrewKrewe Are you using a window A/C? What did HVAC cost overall?
We did a mini split. One way I could have saved money was doing a window unit instead however, because I’m doing a ton of video calls I wanted something extra quiet.
Awesome outcome! We are here in St Pete as well and are getting ready for a similar project. Do you have a list of all the local contractors you used? TY!
My man. Definitely give Lucky Devil electricians a call. Family business and great people to work with. Tell them I sent ya! Everyone else I worked with was with Tuff Shed or contracted by tuff shed to build the shed exterior
Thanks for sharing. I checked out the other build videos and the blog too. We are in St Pete too and looking to do the same in our backyard. I’d love to know some more details on contractors used in the area and how the numbers added up so we know what to expect in costs. Do you have a cost breakdown?
It can be much much cheaper than how I did it, I paid for speed with the boys coming I needed it quick. I used Tuff shed on ulmerton, the contractors who they used for building the shed offered to help finish it for me. I used Lucky Devil electricians (highly recommend them, they’re great to work with and quality work)
How did you convince your 14yo son to record this playing you? He's a great actor
He’s a grown man working and supporting a family. You’re a guy trying to bully people on RUclips. Think about that.
Hi. I did similar with a slightly larger version of the tuff shed you're using. one thing I didn't consider was CO2 buildup inside. the mini split is a simple heat pump and doesn't bring in fresh air. so without a window open and a fan exhausting or bringing in new air I noticed CO2 can rise by 1000ppm per hour. I am looking into a permanent solution for this now.
Have you ran into this problem?
I can’t say I noticed this problem. This might be a location specific solution but being in Florida it wasn’t a big deal to open a window or door for awhile. The other thing we did was fill it to the brim with indoor plants. That kept it from not smelling/feeling fresh all the time.
Aye what was the round about cost of all this? Dope setup, def worth a couple grand no?
Do you live in area where winter is tough? Does it handle weather okay?
Looks great. Thanks for sharing. I am about to start the same thind in our backyard. Did you put a vapor barrior under the shed or anything below the flooring?
We did not install a vapor barrier under the flooring but the vapor barrier was attached to the flooring on the sides. With the galvanized steel floor joists sitting on the pavers and the tuff shed specially treated flooring we were told it wasn’t necessary. Really it’s all about making sure you have plenty of ventilation and your shed isn’t located in a lower grade than the rest of your yard.
Looks awesome! We're considering the same. Do you guys have trouble with mice? Just curious how this works foundation wise. Thanks!
We haven’t noticed anything to suggest issues with pests like mice.
What did the company charge you after you dug out that trench and the few installations of lights and outlets. I’m interested in doing something very similar as well.
They were out all day wiring. For labor and materials I spent about $1600 on electrical. Find yourself a good company and don’t be afraid to get 3+ quotes. I had quotes that were cheaper ($1200) but the group I went with (Lucky Devil in Saint Petersburg) was super professional and really did it right.
Great video! Thank you for all the details. I have a quick question on your mini-split. Did you use a 12,000 BTU? If so, have you noticed any issues with cooling the room but the humidity staying high? I’m worried about oversizing my mini-split on a 12x20 Ft shed to office conversion and wanted to see how your experience has been.
I’ll admit, after researching more details post purchasing I feared the same. I however have not noticed any humidity issues and the humidity readings on my Mr Cool are within expected range. I will say it’s 100% overkill. I could have gotten away with a window unit but I do like how quit the mini split is. With zoom calls it’s crucial I’m not dealing with with sound issues.
Nice work. I'm in the same process right now.
What are the measures? It doesn't look squared.
How did you insulated the floor?
He probably didn’t insulate the floor being in that part of Florida. Dimensions are 12x8 I think
Cost?
Hi there, you talked about hiring an electrician, did you have someone insulate and drywall too?
We did. Had a guy come out and knock it out in one day. We could’ve done it but the speed and skill of the guy we hired was worth the cost for us.
What size is this? 10x12?
Very nice! What is the size?
The shed is 12x8 on the exterior. Lil under 100 sqft inside. (Which helped me not need a permit for this)
Great video, do you remember what model of Tuff Shed this is, and what size? Thanks
I don’t remember the model but this is an 8x12. My area had to be under 100sqft to be built without a permit
Your shed office came out amazing. In my area 120sqf is the max without permits but if you add electrical you need a permit for that. Did you need a permit for electrical?
The ginger bread shed.
What’s the dims of the shed and estimated bottom line cost?
cost?
howd you install the minisplit, what did the electricians leave for you to do that?
Check out our other video where we detail the installation of the mini split!
What size shed did you use? Also to avoid adding the bullsh*t background on your portrait mode shots, simply rotate your phone to landscape when filming. Simple.
The shed is 8x12. And yes, if you check out phase 2&3 you’ll see I have since learned to film in landscape mode. I appreciate the feedback though!
Thanks for sharing. Does this require a permit?
Depends on your local jurisdiction, I built my shed size and height specifically so I did not need to get a permit.
How are Tuff shed windows? Are they energy efficient double pane? Ordering a Tuff shed and they said I can provide my own sliding door and windows and they can install them
The transom windows are just single pane but the French door and side window are all impact double pane. If you got the money you can definitely improve but if you aren’t getting transom you can definitely be fine with what they have
Did you primer the drywall before paint? I'd recommend it!
We didn’t and I wish we had :(
@@KillebrewKrewe are you experiencing issues without primer?
How much was the electrician?
Too many haters here. He was the General Contractor. Romulus and Remus build Rome but they didn't do any labor.
Great job with this! How did you approach ventilation? The place seems sealed up pretty tight and I didn't see any vents or anything. Just curious. Thanks!
Great question. We added a mini split AC unit to handle moisture and keep the climate under control. It’s constantly sucking moisture out and keeps the shed cool 24/7.
@Killebrew Krewe Thanks for following up. My understanding is the mini split doesn't bring in fresh air...it just circulates the air in the room. So do you just open the door when it gets stuffy? Thanks again!
@@BOBopalooza exactly. Few mins of open door and/or window and it’s good as new.
@@KillebrewKrewe Awesome!
I’m doing a Tuff Shed build right and cannot figure out ventilation … do you need baffles etc between roof and insulation? I’ll have
open windows/doors most of the year and a/c + heating but am worried about black mold. did contractors say you would be fine?
What was the size of your shed?
Are you based out of FL?
How big is this?
What about WiFi? Do you have issues?
Great question! We solved our internet issues by creating a Wifi mesh network. Check out our blog post killebrewkrewe.com/work-from-home-office-shed/ for details on the products we used to build that
What size is that? Love it
Shed is 12x8. Our area doesn’t require permits for under 100 sqft.
Looks great
What's the total cost?
Totally cost for everything, ~$18k
@@KillebrewKrewe holy shit. Diy for that much!
We were on a time crunch with the twins being due. We paid for speed. Agreed we could easily have done it cheaper but it’s been worth every penny. That 18k also includes everything in part 2 and 3 of the shed series. If you check it out you’ll notice we added a deck, outdoor lights, pavers and an aluminum lean-to for lawn equipment storage.
@@KillebrewKrewe congrats with your twins.
I built something like that but for my dogs but the AC is creating moisture? Any body knows why?
A/Cs don’t usually create moisture but helps it condense because of the temperature changes. Is the AC unit you have able to pull moisture out? For example, my mini split is constantly pulling moisture out of the office.
Does your mini-split pull moisture from above the ceiling as well? Building this (almost) identical set up in the same climate as y’all
@@greaterdepthsBlog you need to vent the ceiling
@@nickmurphy7158 Thanks for the reply, i did in fact ultimately add 2x4s perpendicular across the rafters to change the vaulted ceiling to a flat ceiling, then added gable vents and soffit vents
What are the dimensions on the inside?
8x12. We had to keep it under 100 sqft for local jurisdiction rules.
Why not solar???
Merely a limited imagination! Didn’t even think of it. That’s a great idea, I’ll have to investigate what my options are there for future projects
What size is your shed?
8 x 12. We had to stay under 100sqft to prevent the need for a permit
How muchbwas the a/c heater unit?
We are working on a cost breakdown analysis video. Stay tuned!
Great video . But the double image video is um distracting
I definitely agree with you. This was my first youtube video and I unfortunately learned that when filming I need to stay in the landscape mode vs portrait mode. I appreciate the feedback and hope to continue to build better videos in the future.
@@KillebrewKrewe keep up the good work .
Why is he communicating with his sons via RUclips instead of just talking to them?
I did the same with Stodoys :)
