Great info as always! I have kept all of these varieties plus Tigers.over the years (except the Odessa). They look fantastic and I am now on the hunt!!
Odessa barbs are by far my favorite fish, although they can be a little troublesome if you don't have enough. I had three, lost one, and one started bullying the other. Luckily the store finally got some new ones in, and then they surprised me with three more small ones, so I'm at seven.
I do love your videos so much ❤️you give us so much information and experience and I sure do appreciate it 🙏 These guys just need a little extra love🙏🙏 They are incredible fish for sure and I want to set up a tank just dedicated to keeping some barbs someday soon ❤️🙏 During my research I appreciate you Sonny for sharing your experience with them! They're definitely beauties for sure.. we just need to know how to house them correctly!!! Thank you for your video ♥️🌿🐟🌿 thumbs up my friend 👍👍👍
Thank you, Mary Paige! The videos take time, but I love making them. What’s really nice, though is finding out that someone found helpful. Thanks again.
Yes, barbs are hardy fish. I have them in a tank that has harder water, with a sponge filter and a high water flow overhang filter. The gold barbs are almost 4 inches and half the cherry barbs are already at 2 inches. The gold barbs tend to hang around the bottom with frantic moves up to the surface when food is available, while the cherry barbs appear more sedate rarely traveling in the top third of the tank unless vegetation or some structure is in that section of the aquarium.
How did the gold barb x green barb cross turned out? I too currently kept those two strains and would want to breed them and figure out their genetics. By the way, gold barbs (bot gold and green) are one of my favourite fish as they are native to where I live!
My first barbs were checkered barbs.I still got them and they do very well in a 49 gallon tank with white cloud mountain minnows and zebra danios ..and rosy and Odessa barbs
this was so zen and informative. i have to admit im not liking the fast and more comedic fish youtubers as theyre just too overstimulating its boring, so thanks for this! i rescued the last stock of black ruby barbs and needed info as a first timer for barbs
It’s never been a problem. I keep cheap plants that don’t need CO2-java moss, java fern, and giant Val. Through trial Ana error, I’ve learned these species do well for me.
Hello! I did enjoy your video very much yes thank you! Have fallen in love with the Platinum barb, the green barb as well. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on mixing about 10 Platinum barbs with five Cherry barbs and five green barbs in a 60 gallon breeder tank. I'd also like to put in five zebra danios and 10 von Rio tetras. And I'd like to go out on a limb and say what if I were to put in my 20 golden yellow cloud minnows? Mixing all of these fish together would be quite a show! They're all currently housed in different aquariums in my living room and they're all at room temperature which basically runs between 68 and 76°. That's the temperature fluctuation in the tank in the winter time and then in the summertime. I would really respect hearing advice from you sir thank you
I would not include the white clouds-with temperatures above 80F, they tend to get sick. Of the fish you mention, I only have experience with the semifasciolatis (green/gold) barb. They should be fine. Start with fewer fish, see how they do, and then add more. If your goal is to breed the fish, put out only a few adults. A high density of adults might eat most/all of the fry. Like in my video, use lots of cover, and for really high temperatures, definitely try to use an aerator.
Great video as ever. Ever kept any of these with endlers? I've got a lot of tank space with some male endlers and am looking at barbs. Worried about fin nipping. Thanks!
Thanks very much. I haven’t kept Endlers for a long time. All 4 barbs have done ok with my white clouds. So I think they’d be ok with Endlers, but don’t know for sure. Also- I don’t think you’d get any fry-the adults would pick them off.
The only issue I could foresee is whether your tank can handle the bio load. If it can, I don’t think there would be behavioral or compatibility issues. I’m speculating though, because I’ve never kept the two species together and I don’t know for sure.
Hi, now i have corydoras, amano shrimp, bamboo shrimp, hillstream loaches. I'm wondering will odessa barb will cause any threat to shrimps or others fishes? Thank you.
I have never kept them with shrimp. My guess is they might try to eat the shrimp, but I don’t know for sure. Proceed cautiously-lots of fish like to eat shrimp.
your video has just made up my mind I always over looked barbs for some reason . I've got san empty 4ft tank i've just repaired and have been wondering for a few weeks now what I want to put in it , i think it is 65 gallons or in our system 240L . ive kept fish for over 35yrs and have only ever had tiger barbs 2 or 3 times in all that time. just a question or 2 for you . I live in Africa where the water out my tap is at PH of 8 -8,2 and the water is hard . How do barbs cope in this water ? . The climate here i guess would be considered warm and was hoping to maybe have a tank with no heater or even filtration , Do you think would be possible with barbs ? , I do realise that these question probably come across as beginer questions but I suppose in some ways I am , Thanks Jason
The barbs in my video like softer, more acidic water, so your water might be too hard. Also, lack of circulation in an unfiltered tank might be difficult for them, although, per my summer tub video, I did keep and breed gold barbs in an unfiltered tub outside in the summer time.
@@sonnysfishroom3241 Thanks . Its a pity . Ive done the softening of water before for the discus tank and to be honest im looking to go an easy root , going to enjoy my tank this time . softenung the the water became a real pain in the arse but thanks for that
@@jasonvesagie I haul in rain water for the barbs, white clouds, and cories. But I also keep rice fish, neocaridina shrimp, and Heterandria Formosa, which like my hard tap water. There’s a lot to be said for keeping fish that like the conditions you have to offer, rather than having to adjust the environment for the fish.
@@sonnysfishroom3241 Agreed . I've had tanks my whole life, I'm sure you know how it goes ,at one stage I had seven tanks , each one bigger than the last . I enjoy my fishkeeping but i,ve done the water thing for discus and rams etc . Im going to keep it simple now . ive got 2 tanks . a 3ft in my daughters room with a few gold fish in and this 4 footer that i've just repaired . ill probably just go with convicts and 2 or 3 tank appropriate cichlids . I want to have it simple , probably change again in a little while but for now thats my plan . If the barbs were going to be easy i would of gone that route , but to treat the water for it is a mission that i just dont want to do . But thanks for the inspiration in any case
My daughter is breeding cherry barbs. I'm now raising a group of her young in hopes to do the same. They are in a 10 gallon tank with guppies. There's a hang-on-back style power filter. The tank is dense with java moss. And there are a number of corydoras catfish in there. It seems the dense moss is the only explanation for how she keeps finding more cherry barbs in her tank than she started with. She's not changing their water often or trimming their plants. They get a little flake food a few times a week. Maybe we are trying too hard?
Whatever she’s doing, she’s doing something right. Unfortunately, success with that species has evaded me. I think the dense plants must be playing a role, as you say.
Just added arulius barb into my toger barb tank and im quite shocked how menace they are. I thought tiger barb are bad. I cant wait to get my hand on cherry and oddesa barb but no local store sells them. Im from borneo malaysia.
@@sonnysfishroom3241 That would be nice. What I really wish could come to existence are dwarf strains of goldfish (not sure that's even possible). Everyone loves keeping goldfish, but the problem is they always outgrow their tanks too fast.
Really? I’m sorry they didn’t work out for you. I kept mine with white clouds, and didn’t have any problems. I’m guessing, but maybe yours were from a rowdier strain?
Odessa bard are beautiful but 5 of them bullied my whole shoal of 9 Super Schwartzi cories until I removed them from the rank. I gave them back to the fish store. Never again will I waste my money in barbs.
Very sorry to hear that, Michael. I don’t know what to make of it. My Odessas have always been peaceful-they never bothered my white clouds or my paleatus cories. Sorry you had a bad experience with them.
Recommending 70 gallons for tinfoils is irresponsible. They NEED at least a 6 foot long tank, MINIMUM of 180, and even then you're looking at very few if any other fish since they SHOULD be kept in groups like any other schooling/shoaling fish. The average person should resign themselves to not owning one because they'll never be able to provide the appropriate conditions for them. Just like Bala sharks, just like Iridescent sharks, just like Pacu and all the other monster fish.
