- Hi Everyone,
I wanted to share our experience with the Tinfoil Barb. This is a large fish that requires a large aquarium. I hope those who are thinking about keeping Tinfoil Barbs will watch this video and avoid making the mistakes I made when I got them.

I was able to keep a single tinfoil barb with a small population of tiger barbs. The tigers were always prime numbers but the solitary barb never had an issue. R.I.P. Reynold. 8/5/2009 - 7/15/2020
How big was he?
Senior story alert! These are some of the first fish I kept, as a young adult. After college they had grown to 8 inches or so. I moved to NY for a job, and took them and their 55 gal tank along. When I moved two years later to FL, I let a co-worker have the four of them. When I visited a few years later, she had passed on, and her son had them in a bigger tank, much bigger fish. That would have made them 12 years old. They were the small percentage of outliers. 1980s so long since dead. They always had good food and good water. Memory lane includes the fish in our past, lol
That's cool!
@Billy Mack, Texas Detective thanks 🙏🏼
My tinfoil barb far out lived 10 years. It was 19 when he died.
Measured 17.5 inches long in the end. 3.5 pounds.
“Mikey” was huge but very tame. I could hand feed him, pet him, and he followed me in the room all the time. One time he got startled and broke the heater. Thought he wouldn’t survive but he did.
Yes he splashed and I couldn’t leave much in the tank with regards to plants or ornaments.
I also hand fed him earth worms from time to time.
Such an amazing and beautiful fish. Long before the Internet I had him. One day I’ll have many tinfoils in a massive tank.
Right now i breed guppies in a 55 gal with all the landscaping and live plants I didn’t have with Mikey. I’m 53 and I started looking after fish at 5. Had Mikey at 3 with 6 other fish. He easily out lived them all along with any pet my friends ever had. I just couldn’t take him for a walk. Lol.
Love aquariums for life.
Wow - that's a big fish!
Personally, I do. as much research as I can on every fish before I decide to keep them, its really quite interesting plus you gain the knowledge to keep the fish in the best possible conditions to suit their needs,
thanks for another good informative video !
I bought one without doing the research and its huge just like the one in the video. It fallows my long fin kio in my 100 gallon fish tank.
I love tin foil barbs. I too didn't realize how large they would get and had five of them in a 55 gallon tank. I bought a 125 gallon tank that i built into a wall and the five tin foil barbs were the only fish i kept in that talk. The tank was always a head turner for visitors. The fish would take food directly from my fingers and yes I would get a little wet in the process. I don't have tin foil barbs right now, but if I can ever afford a 300 gallon tank I sure would have them again! Peaceful fish that appear to recognize you and their size is both their most positive trait and their most negative trait. As far as a pond, yes larger bodies of water are better for them however goldfish and koi in a pond (which I also have) you can easily view from above. Tin Foil Barbs are best viewed from the side which a pond doesn't offer. Thank you for sharing accurate information about this wonderful species.
They are crazy eaters!
I have a couple of friends in Malaysia that fly fish the rivers there. They are always posting pictures of large Tinfoil Barbs they catch and release. They can get pretty large!
They sure can!
I always tease them, I ask them who's aquarium they have been fishing in. Pretty much every fish they catch, except Malaysian trout, I have seen in an aquarium.
I had tinfoils years ago, I absolutely love them. I just got a few today, l’ve decided to have them again, I truly miss them in my big tank. I’ll be adding to my little school soon💖💖
Have fun!
I used to have a crush on this fish. They can be found in my native rivers, but its kinda rare to see nowadays. They must be so great for big monster fish tanks, sometimes i see them as arowana tankmate
That would be an interesting combo.
Tinfoil barbs are so underrated.
I’ve just picked up 8 of them for 30 pounds 😂
You better have a 1000 gallon my guy
@El Sagus I have 3 in my 75 gallon. If you overstock your tank then the aggression will disperse. (Dither fish)
It should be mandatory for all pet stores to have outlines of the size of the fish on the purchase tank.🤔 Especially on the Incognito huge fish.
That's a great idea!
No, if you are buying it you should know
@@liamfriis7521 So... let the fish suffer because not everyone lives up to your standards? Cut the fishes nose to spite your own face?
Introducing them as a sub school for my Oscars was one of the smartest things I've ever done. Aside from curbing aggression they help pick up after the Oscars and there's less waste in the tank. They're best friends with a pacu. I'm starting a secondary sub school for my next Oscar tank. I'm going to include another sub School of green tiger barbs and some silver dollars. But hands down foil Barb's are the best sub schools for. Any Aquarium. They are the ultimate synchronized swimmer
Most major pet stores actually have these little signs giving information about the fish, like their size and temperament
From what I've seen at least some fish stores only show the name and price, not how big they get or whether or not they're aggressive, which I feel should be mandatory
Then again, as another reply pointed out, it's up to you the buyer to know what you're getting into by researching a pet *before* you take it home
now i got my new 135 gal tank, and i have put my tinfoil barbs and silvers dollar in the tank, and im soo happy , tinfoil are so gentle and very friend whit silver dollar lol,, they sleep together , but its very hard to feed the silver dollar those barb are so big and active they literally create too much water movement for the silver dollar . they cannot eat in same area of the tank,, its tricky to feed other fish whit them, its the MAJOR negative point about them but my silvers dollar are actually too small
Just ran across this video. Love all the accurate information you presented regarding the tin foil barb. I love these fish. You hit the nail on the head though because at fish stores you see them in tanks with all the other little fish not realizing they will grow so large. Not right that stores do this. Years ago I had six of them in a 125 gal tank with a wet dry sump filter. No other fish in that tank. They did very well. I hope to do a biotope tank someday with tin foil barbs in a larger tank.
That would be cool!
There are two different species of Tinfoil Barbs that are commonly mistaken for each other. This video is accurate for Barbonymus schwanenfeldii, but their smaller and almost identical looking cousins (Barbonymus altus) only reach about 8 inches max length and can be housed in decent-sized indoor aquariums.
Are they interchangeable at pet stores or sold as separate species?
Thanks for this information more helpful than the video itself
Your minimalist approach to filtration on this tank is quite impressive.. healthy fish, heavy stocking, and pristine looking water. RUclips discussions on sumps vs large canisters are a hot topic these days. I think your approach offers a lot of key lessons. Please cover this filtration set up and your key “learnings”? Hot and important topic,
I actually did a video on how much filtration's actually necessary. We really over filter most tanks.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics a few facts about the substrate? How thick, do you vacuum? Saw the video you referred to, it challenges a lot of my beliefa about filtration. I am a sump guy with 200, 340 and 500 gallon set-ups. With auto feeders and bottom mats i never have to open the top of the aquariums (except for WC) This is one advantage, all the servicing is done with the sumps, and i can have huge blocks of foam. Can see on my channel...
HalfMan HalfCichlid If I gravel vac (only unplanted tanks) I gravel vac all the way to the bottom every week. Gravel substrate is often at least a couple inches thick. Sand might only be an inch or so, maybe a little more.
Prime Time Aquatics thank you. My big tanks are so tall it is nearly impossible to gravel vac the 500 and the 340. Hence the use of Aquadecor bottom mats and power heads that sweep the bottom so that detritus gets sucked into overflows. I realize without substrate I have to compensate for the lost bio capacity of the substrate. Hence the use of sumps with a lot of foam for beneficial bacteria.
I had 2 4 inch Tinfoil Barbs , within 1 year they had grown from 1.5 inch to 4 inches .
my Tinfoil Barbs are quite active and eats a lot of food , and they also play with small pebbles and stones in the tank , they take it in their mouth and throw it after chewing for some time.
lol yes and they are twitching each other ,,, they are playfull and gentle whit other fish.. i love them,, they actually love to enter in school of others fish LOL.... my tinfoil sleep whit another specie of fish lol
The same thing happens even to my tank...
My Tinfoil Barb grew to 17.5 inches and lived for 19 years. No exaggeration. Very tame and used to me. I could hand feed “Mikey” and hold him in the water no problem. Out lived any other pet we had or any friends pets. A great pet as I grew up into adulthood.
That's cool!
Great video man !! Love from INDIA 🇮🇳✌️
Puskar Choudhary Thank you!
I bought 100 pcs...jus for 1200 rs...I love them becoz...they are really look cool when they move in groups...😚👍👊
Hey Jason. Great video man. And yes! Tinfoil barbs get big fast! I bought 4 from my LFS when I was starting fish keeping. And they got too big for my 65 gallons. Now something else we need to know is that these fish can and will eat live plants. So plastic plants are the best option.
I personally love these fish. But I don’t have te place in my home to set up a large enough tank to keep a school of them.
Ya, mine ate every plant I ever put in there!
Wait they will eat my algea carpet to?
I have a pair of Tinfoil's that are now 6", I feed them well. I had a few other smaller barbs in the tank however; these two hunt like a pair of wolves and during the night, using those big eyes, they track down any other smaller fish and eat them . Small mouth or not, they are relentless and will devour all live plants. They even ate the 3 huge snails I had, right out of their shells. I was hoping to add some colour to the tank but, I haven't been able to pair them up with any other community fish, they are far from docile.
Mine really loved to eat snails!
The video should be my computer monitor screen saver.❤️
I love my tinfoil barbs. They are in a 125G 6ft long tank. Some are now actually teenagers now 13 & 14 so be aware 10 is an average age. I do wish I had like a 30 ft long tank for them though.
I know the feeling.
I had one during childhood. My mom bought it with other fish, it grew to be so large and ate all the other fish. We hated it
Good video. I absolutely love the tank featured and all those fish look happy and fat and happy.
i have heard that in the tropics they are kept with koi as they pick the parasites of the koi
Hey jason keep tanking........ awesome fish room i watched the one were u were pricing up your fish room j i was sweating on how much it cost.lol... but worth every cent....
Love my Red Tail Tin Foil Barbs in my Oscar tank
Your tank reminded me of something from Ohio Fish Rescue.
They’re really beautiful but really big. That’s the size of koi carp!!
A pond full of Tin Foil Barbs would look amazing! Thanks!
That tank is the definition of what a BEGINNING fishkeeper should not do - one of those classic "you can't mix this & that" situations... unless of course you know what you are doing.
Thank you for making this video.
And they do think splashing you is funny - they learn that in 'school'.
That is so true. Not a good mix to start with. You really have to have a feeling for the temperament of each fish and the order in which you add them to make that work!
I was brand spanking new to fish keeping and was offered a 75 gal tank and stand with fish and everything for free. Of course I jumped on it. It came with 4 tinfoils, 2 denisons, 1 ruby and a very large pleco. They are now my babies, but I feel bad about them being so cooped up. The ruby shows signs of stress because she's much smaller [the tinfoils are 5 inches long and the ruby is only 2ish], and doesn't have a school to hang out with. I go back and forth on my mind if I should get a few more ruby barbs or get rid of the tinfoils. The struggle is real. I have no idea how old the fish are either. Anyways, thanks for the video. I'm surprised to see those tinfoils so peaceful because mine are crazy 😆
I think you are on the right track about getting rid of the tin foil barbs. It will be better in the long run.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you for the reply, I suppose it's time to get serious about finding a local fish store to give them to! Have a wonderful day
I love this fish. They look incredible in schools. I know they get to a foot lol. I have 7 silver tins and 4 albino ❤️.
Monster size and super peaceful. There in a 7ft by 2ft tank so I have time to upgrade later.
Justin R Varga That’s a great tank to start with!
you have channel? can we see it?
Bot Man I should do one lol
I had a small school of 4 tinfoil barb with 1 bala shark. I had them for almost 4 years and they were about 6-8 inches; about a month ago, 3 of them died suddenly. Our water was tested and everything was in perfect range. The temperature was perfect as well. They just died and we don’t know why
That's the exact same thing that happened to me with them. It was after a heavy rain, so I'm wondering if there was something in the water.
Can i add live plants in my tank with tinfoil barb?
Will tinfoil barb eat the plants
Plz note that my tinfoil is only 2 inches in size
In the late 70's a LFS..long gone now, had a 240 gallon with three Tinfoils and they were every bit of 14-16" long, scissor tails lines in black and all fins were red. Even the body color was gun metal color..not the washed out fish that would be sold for the next 30 years. Those fish also had a deep body with a bit of a nuchal hump. Just the best I have ever seen. They lived on all the live brine shrimp and worms and pellet food they could eat. I mean,he would fill that tank with brine shrimp at feeding time.
I was glad to see a Tinfoils a few years ago return with red fins and black edging back to the hobby. Only now,I keep smaller fish and plants.
Can't have everything!
They sound really cool!
I have two in the indoor koi pond
You're tank is beautiful. I have a lone frontosa and am happy to see yours living with the species I would love to introduce to our tank
Thank you!
I’ve been putting dead snails in the yard to have ants clean out the shells. I put the shells back in the tank hoping the calcium eventually helps the live snails (need a check on that) and as decorations.
Thanks man I’m looking at buying three full size ones I just wanted to know if they were aggressive or not but you made my mind up I’m gonna put a deposit down on them tomorrow
I just got three tinfoils this morning. They’re small, maybe two inches. I’ve got them in a 120 gallon tank (60 inch) with 6 big silver dollars and six gold barbs, and some assorted small fish. I’m guessing I’ve got a year or two before they outgrow the tank?
I would say that's about right. They grow quick, but a 5ft 120 will give you a little time.
sir i have a 3 inch albino tinfoil barb and still very small
i have platys and mollies with him and they are going along fine
so will zebra danios survive with this tinfoil barb too?
or will they be eaten even though my tinfoil is very small
They would most likely get eaten eventually.
How are they with koi and goldfish (not fancies lol)? I keep my water at similar parameters to you,
I have seen people keep them in ponds with koi. I don't remember anyone reporting serious issues. Interesting idea about the koi sock!
I ve done the same mistake and now growing 15inches 8 tinfoil barb in the pond..
I think all of your video are worth watching keep it up.
Thank you!
I have 8 Tin Foils with Clown Loaches and Silver Dollars along with a red Severum and various smaller fish, their home is 8 feet long by 3 feet by 2 feet. Agreed they eat everything :-)
I bet that is a cool tank to look at!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I like it :-) if you click on my user name it will take you to my channel, there is a short video of that tank and a couple of others I have.
Tin Foils are the 1st fish I could keep alive
Mine were Green Terrors.
They are hardy fish. Thats why
@@riteshr9477 yes
My one was Betta
Same here
Alhamdulillah
i keep them in a group of 4
They may not be so near the end of their lifespan. The one remaining fish I have in a 55 gallon, from a group I bought in 1994, is a tinfoil barb. So, coming up on 27 years old. The other tinfoil barb was somewhere between around 12 when he died. It seems like it's not hard to get them into their 20s, from what I've found. What I can't seem to find is any indication of what the maximum lifespan or the record really is.
That is awesome!
I thought all Barbonymus schwanenfeldii have black stripes in their caudal fin? If not then they are the Red tail Barbonymus altus.
Good video
Me buying a buying tinfoil bard
Fish store sellers:this don't get huged
my two guys are getting bigger, since only two, they get distressed easily and hit the glass quite often
Got a 52 gallon tank “second hand”, it came with four small tinfoil barbs (along with some other fish).. don’t know what I’ll do when they grow😥
Prime Time 👍🏻👍🏻🤠
Thanks for making this video! This is an extremely mistreated fish. 75 gallons is laughable.
That being said, I don't think a pond is the only way to go. These fish do great in a 200 gallon, 5 or 6 of them, and no other tank mates.
Pond is a great way to go!
Once again, great video Jason.
Elvin D'souza Thank you!
Hi Jason, I really enjoyed this video! I didn’t realize that they grew so large. I have a 210 with big haps ranging from 7-14.” It doesn’t sound like you would recommend a small group of them in there? Anyways, thanks for sharing and keep up the great work with these videos. By the way, the Multies are still doing great. I’m feeding them the “EZ Fry and Small Fish Food” From Aquarium Co-Op. they absolutely love it. 👍.
Good to hear! Ya, I would stay away form them in that sized tank.
Sir albino tinfoil barb is not growing that much
Its been almost 1 year since i bought him and he has only grown about an inch in all this time
My setup is supposed to be perfect
So what is the problem?
Is he stunted
They usually do better in groups. It could be stunted if the tank is too small?
Let's be realistic. Most folks don't have a pond in their backyards. You can't keep them in schools if they grow that big. Most I'd keep in my 125 gallon tank is 1 or 2. That's it
i got 3 tinfoil barb and 2 silver dollar,,, for my 55 gal tank,, this is too small for them,,, im a beginner and now i know why people become more pasionnate, because i am forced , and I WILL very soon, buy a 250 gal tank,,,, because, they need school AND space
yeah mine tinboil barb is so large and my tank is getting smaller for him
What are some silvery fish similar to theese, but smaller. Especially interested in something with scales that are quite pronounced and noticable.
Filament Barbs!
Is it true that tinfoil barbs will eat and kill any live plants that are in the tank?
Dan M yeah i heard they have a herbivorous tendency
yes its true and they are actually 80% herbivous,,, and i can say they will DESTROY a planted tank for sure
@@captainpobtamere3024 thanks. I didnt have much luck with live plants so i got rid of them and got a few tinfoil barbs to go a long with my balas.
I just bought 1 tinfoil barb and he didnt want to eat my food any advice? My fish at same tanks they all eats. I feed him with few types of pellet food not single one he interested
I have a 75 gallon tank is it too small because I have three tinfoil premium barb I had the other tinfoil barb with different dorsal fins but they died, there's also two kissing gouramis I had to put a divider two separate the kissing gouramis because the younger one was constantly bullying the older one, I'm thinking maybe I need a bigger tank?
Edit: you can see my aquarium on my channel, nevermind I guess I need a pond lol thanks
Pond fish for sure
can i keep swordtails with tinfoil barb?
p.n : my tinfoil is about 2 inches in size and possibly stunted
i have actually rescued a swordtail
plz reply can i keep him with my tinfoil?
I don't think it will be a problem.
great vid
Superb video 👌🏻
Awesome Video Thanks for sharing FishFam NJAE19
Amazing information. You have a new subscriber.
Thank you! Glad you are here.
I had 3 tinfoil barbs and they grew to about 7-8 inches long. 1 of them ate my red tail shark whole. I quickly gave them back to the fish store as it was trying to eat everything else in my tank.
Wow! I'm surprised the red tail shark didn't try to attack them!
Mine love Romaine lettuce once in a while...
yes i have one of them whit digestive problem,,,, but whit lettuce he is okay
Holy Chrome Bumpers, Batman! I guess I am glad I didn't buy them for a smaller aquarium! Man, they are gorgeous though!
You are wise! : -)
Love all your videos!.. New Sub btw.. also I disable my ad block on your page (I hope it helps a little) as I can see that you really do care about your fish and that it's not just about the money.. Looking forward to your new videos...
Appreciate you being here!
Great PSA :) Thank you!
Thank you!
Sir which hardy plants will a small 2 inch tinfoil barbs wont eat?
They eat them all!
I'm actually kinda surprised that stores haven't realized how big Tinfoil Barbs and Bala Sharks are and stopped carrying them.
Audri Sampson Ya, or at least make sure people had the right size tank for them.
They know exactly how big these fish get but if theres $$$ to be made, most shops wont care
Hey Jason I have 2 pretty big tinfoils with my arrow and datnoid I wanted to get a 3rd so I was at the lfs and seen one lone baby was 2 1/2 inches have him in a 20 with a blind cichlid of mine it's the cichlids entire tank. So they doing great the cichlid was raised with the other 2 barbs so is used to them I wanna grow this one out to put him with the other 2 maybe make it a small school instead of a pair how big should I make him before transferring the barbs are like 5 inches in the big tank but heavy hehe.
I haven't tried adding smaller ones to larger groups. After QT I would just throw him in and watch them to make sure no one is being chased excessively.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I have to make sure he has some size on him least 4 ish inches for the silver arrowanna and Indo datnoid just make sure he ain't edible 🤪
They grow fast I'm not doing anything else to the tank so may as well try and make the barbs happy they love there home see if a third friend makes them even happier thanks for responding
Do they have any habbit of biting the tails of long fin fishes? Usually barbs have that habbit I guess like tiger barbs.
Not that I ever saw
@@PrimeTimeAquatics That's great! Thank you! 👍🏻
I have 2 tinfoil barb. Bigger one is becoming white. Fins are not red anymore not shinny. Why it is? What should I do?
Not sure what is going on there. I always start with water parameters and make sure they are ok. If they are, keep an eye on him to make sure there is no evidence of disease.
Sir i have been keeping a single tinfoil barb for 11 months now
He is doing fine and very active
So is there any necessity to buy more tinfoils for him
I had bought some before but they ended up fighting and killing each other even though the nunber was big enough for school
I have 2 albino tinfoil barbs and i put some goldfish in there.
So you tell me can you keep a tinfoil barb fish in a koi fish pond
As long as the temps are high enough - absolutely
I have 2 tin foil barbs with my south American cichlids in the 100 gallon tank. With green terror jack Dempseys fire mouth and a couple mbunas. The barbs are older you guys think this set up is alright?
The tankmates will probably work. The issue will be the size of the tinfoil barbs when they get older - If I were to keep them again I think I would want an 8ft tank.
I have Introduced 2 new tinfoil barb 3 days ago. but tinfoil barbs are not eating from last 3 days
They are very aggressive eaters. I would keep an eye on the tank for signs of ich or other disease. Also, just double check ammonia and nitrite levels - both should be zero.
sir i see my fishes rubbing themselves against the substrate even after keeping the tank clean by doing 20 cent water change every week... please help me with a solution for this i don't like to see them doing that im worried
Hard to say for sure. The most obvious sign of external parasites are little white dots on their bodies.
What kind of geophagus is the blue one?
Geophagus altifrons
Can I keep tinfoil and green terror together ?
POssibly, but I personally wouldn't do it in anything less than a 240 gallon (maybe even an 8ft tank).
What are the diet of tinfoil sir?
They eat everything!
I have a 125 with ball sharks and clown loaches, I have been thinking about getting some, should I?
The fish would probably work well together, but I probably wouldn't get tinfoil barbs again unless I had an 8ft tank.
Ok thank you
Where do you get your fake plants from? The ones in your tank look awesome :) awesome video :)
My LFS has them - really tall!
Aww shame! Was hoping a cheeky Amazon or eBay reference :D great find though. Keep up the good work my friend.
Do you remember the manufactures name on the plant? I have a 8.5ftx24inchx24inch tank and need fake plants to fill some space :D
Is it alright if I keep my 1 tin foil barb with two Bala sharks and roseline sharks.
They would prefer to be in groups if possible.
My local fish store said they only get around 5inchs bought 8 for a 40gallon upgrading to a much larger soon tho
Wow - they were a little off. Haha
I have 2tinfoil barb iwith othersn 2feet tank is it enough
For me I would not keep them again unless I had at least an 8ft tank.
Can I put my turtle (RED EARED SLIDER ) with them
Possibly in something the size of a pond?
your 10 year olds are just getting started. mine are 17 and show no signs of slowing down
yes actually some people say they live for 8-10 years old but i have keep them for 15 years,,,, and they was not ready to die,, it was accident, im pretty sure they can live 20 years and more

Plz help me tohow i can grow him fast

That fish really needs at least a 6ft tank. He is probably being stunted in such a small tank.
This fish are kinda one of the misunderstood fish in the hobby some fish store will say this guy's don't get big definitely not true after digging some research sadly I only had one he's not in a group but I don't think he's feeling alone he swims with my koi and iridescent sharkl
