love them. peaceful, bold, bright, hardy and not too hard to source. probably the best cichlid of all time for those with a larger community with peaceful fish
I have 7 of them on my community tank with angels, tetras, mollies, SAE's, pleco and cories. They are very hardy, never lost anyone (Unfortunately one got sucked to my gravel vacuum and I had to cut the hose open to save him, and he is still doing great. He was out of water for several minutes!). Great personality, active, fast swimming. Definitely not aggressive, only occasional tiny nips to set boundaries, as all fish do.
I think mine started eating my platies after several months of being ok together. He also chases my bristlenose pleco occasionally. I guess platies are a little too small. Thankfully I had another tank to move the remaining platies to.
Hi! I want to get a 75 gallon in the future with a jack dempsey & firemouth with lots of hiding spots. I’m considering getting one of these in with them. I noticed you added yours to a cichlid tank. What other cichlids do u have? Basically, would my idea work? Lol
My blue acara is amazing, his name is Frank, he’s 7 years old and is about 7” long. This species is by far my favourite freshwater fish, thanks for sharing!
Absolutely stunning! Just saw these 1.5" -2" juvenile EBAs at my local fish 🐠 store here in Singapore 🇸🇬 they are selling at $18 each ... really tempted to get 5 of them for my 75 gallon tank together with the silver arowana but afraid the aro might just eat them 😅
I recently bought 4 young Electric Blue's for my lightly stocked 75 Gallon. They are fantastic fish, and are already willing to grab food directly from my hand. In addition to the great blue coloration, the orange trim at the top of their dorsal fin really adds to the appearance. I have a few rock caves set up, but like Jason's fish, they don't seem to spend much time dwelling there. They seem to prefer being active throughout the day. Thanks Jason for your review - You were my main resource before making the purchase.
I had to have this when a saw it a few weeks ago. I put him in a 120g tank full with African Cichlids. Thank God he has been completely ignored and thriving. MBUNAS, Tropheous, Peacock and one hap Venusus. I am so happy. Definitely will be adding more EBAs. PS, I have two FX6s for Bio, one Fluval 407 for water polishing (including carbon) for the 50+ fish (the Electric Yellow Labs won't stop breeding...lol. Tank established 5 yrs now. I also use Pathos plants to combat excess nutrients among others growing out of the tank on drift wood. You and your wife do a great job with the Videos!!!

These are my favorite 'electric blue cichlid'. I keep one in my Angelfish-Severum and a couple of black skirt tetras tank :) I'd keep more, but where I live, Electric Blue Acaras are more expensive than Discus and Rams and with the pandemic, these fish are as hard to find as rarer cichlids like Keyholes, Apistos, Festivums, etc.

I love this fish! It is one of my favorites! It is definitely my wife’s favorite. I have a male and female in a 75 gallon tank with a platinum angel, 4 Denison barbs, a pair of Bosemani rainbows(which look awesome together since both are blue and orange), a yo-yo loach, a pleco, otocinclus catfish, and two flying fox and one big amano shrimp. I was worried that they might eat the Otocinclus, but they have been together for over a year. I have not been able to keep fry past 5 days, even with moving them to a hang on fry container. In the tank they get picked off. One thing that they do use is a glass salsa jar. They pick up the fry and place them in the salsa jar. Mom and Dad take turns guarding the opening of the jar. As far as plants, you are correct in recommending anubias attached to rocks. Any plant must be WELL rooted. I have tried starting many stem plants or smaller plants without long roots and they are always floating within an hour. I have a fake plant where they like to try to breed, however they have recently tried other locations. I have have had success with aponogetan ulvaceus and with well rooted cryptocoryne. Hopefully I will get them to breed again and keep the fry. I may move the fry to another tank as soon as they are free swimming. I think the hang on box did not stay warm enough even though it was fed with tank water. Anyway, I agree it is a great fish that I will probably always keep!

My male electric blue acara just died after many years. The female is still going strong. They did great with a couple blood parrrots, a couple of rainbow cichlids and school of bosemani, turqouise and red irian rainbowfish. Very friendly fish with fantastic personalities. I really miss him in my 125. He was my favorite.
Just got mine yesterday 3 inches right now just one as a centerpiece for my 40 hoping to keep it for years and eventually be able to give it a 4 or 6 foot tank.
I have tried the EBJD multiple times and youre right. They NEVER get bigger than a couple inches before dying mysteriously. I'll definitely take a look at these guys. I always assumed they were an african cichlid, not central/south american.
I just purchased a blue Acara and an electric blue. I added them to a tank with my Jack Dempsey ( they seem to hang out together) 2 blood parrots, 2 silver dollars and one Leopard Bush fish.
Why does it seem most people hate on the idea of these fish in a 40 gallon tank. It seems like your fish are doing fine. I really wanna try a pair in a 40 breeder but it seems very frowned upon everywhere but your video.
I kept them in a 40 breeder for a long time. I really don't see the issue. I have recently moved most of the group (expect a pair) into a 125, but a 40B is fine.
Great video, I have a empty 75 gallon and I want to get a dozen of these guys , with some yellow long fin bristlenose PLECOS , thanks for the suggestion, Electric blue Acura is a beautiful fish 🐟
I kept a regular blue acara named Joker as the center piece fish in a 38 gallon with Glo tetras with a girl I dated a few years ago. The Glo tetras were my ex’s and the 38 gallon we got together. Everyone got along great to my knowledge anyway. I was only around for the first year of that
I keep my electric blue acara with a load platys, mollies, corys, kuhli loaches, angel fish, golden wonder killi, and hes totally fine with all the live plants aswell in my 125g!
Just moved a breeding pair into a 40 gallon to spawn, had them in with severums, congos, geophagus surinamensis beforehand and they all got along great
I have a pair in my 55 gallon with a school of white skirts, an albino parrot and some plecos and it's a very beautiful tank. I am thinking about adding some more but I would like to ensure they're females as the two I have are males and both full grown at just under 6 inches, I feel if I throw any more boys in there tehy're going to get beat up.
I put two of them in a 125 gallon with 2 convicts 2 green terror 1green severum. They are about 3mths old. The other fish are 2years + 4 to 5 inches. They are doing great.
Love these fish , I have a pair in a 55gal that breadlast month I have a batch of fry in with the parents along with three Golden grahams to bristlenose plecos for live plants they've never uprooted any the plants and they don't bother any of the other fish in with baby fry in there very peaceful....
I’ve got a pair in my 75 gal with 4 dicus, I got them when they were juvenile like 2 inches big the discus were always bigger never had a problem with aggression.
Oh awesome! I have a school of GloFish tetras that came with a 55 g I bought- and I have been debating adding an EBA- just need to add a few more plants
I had a pair lay eggs for the 1st time this evening. Any tips to raise the fry successfully? All their tank mates have now been removed since she layed the eggs. Once hatched should I keep fry with the parents, remove the fry to a separate tank, or try to keep half with the parents and remove half? Awesome channel btw! It helped me get back into the hobby and share it with my son as my dad did with me when I was a child.
I think as long as they have some live baby brine shrimp you will keep a lot of the fry. The parents sometimes eat the fry on their first try, but sometimes they leave them alone too.
Thanks man, this is very timely. I have a 90g with rainbows, Corys, cherry barbs and platys. The platys are breeding like crazy, so I'm looking for a nice crowd control fight that wont attack my rainbows
Thank you so much for the information of these beautiful species. I was always intimidated since I assumed they have aggressive behavior like convict. Anyway I really like this aquarium setup, beauty in the simplicity.
I got into the hobby this past Summer and your videos have taught me so much, so thank you! I do have a question I was hoping you could answer. I was recently gifted a 55 gal and was hoping to keep a community tank with the EBA as my centerpiece fish. The current stock I was thinking of was Colombian tetras (or a similarly large tetra), a school of corydoras, and possibly some hatchet fish. Nothing is set in stone, but would you recommend sticking with 1 EBA or could I get 2?
This is one of my favorite fish. They're so beautiful and have so much personality. I've thought about putting them in with my rams, but I have a breeding pair and I don't think it will work out well.
Hi sir ,so I have 4 electric blue acara and they are about a year old. Bought them online form aqua hanna in December of 2020, I wasn't sure if I had a pair. But I most definitely do, they spawn on a rock in some dense plant didn't see them spawn . But if you look closely you can see the egg. The smaller one is faning while the male isn't letting the other 2 acara next to the spawn site. Also I have a few pairs of high fin Molly's, cory cat and 2 pair of rainbow fish. They are in a 55 gallon tank, ph 7.4 temp 79 f. I Would like to keep you updated Thank you John
Once again great video Jason. I do own a pair of them with 2 pairs of Red Spotted Sevrums in a 40 gallon tank. Just wted to know if it's slow growing fish.
My first 45 gallon tank is cycling now, and I want the electric blue acara’s to be the centerpiece! These are my stocking ideas and need advice on if this would work! 2 Electric Blue Acara’s, 6 Dwarf Bolivian Rams (or substitute 6 dwarf neon rainbows), 10 Black harlequin rasboras, 8 lemon tetras, and 8 Cory cats. Is that a little too ambitious or overstocked? This is my first tank ever, and I’m a late 30’s guy who had a lot of time in quarantine. Haha. Your channel is one of my favorites for sure. Thanks for the advice man if you can! But no doubt I want these electric blues to be the star’s.
Thanks for being here! I like your stocking, but would lean towards the rainbows over the rams to minimize any issues with the acaras. Should be an awesome tank!
Great info!!!! What do you think about adding a school of Buenos Aires or Pristella Tetras? I plan to have one as a centerpiece fish. I do plan on having plants, driftwood, a bristlenose, and a few emerald cories. I'll be using a 40 gallon breeder.
I have a 55 Gallon with 2 dwarf gourami 1xM 1xF, 10 Lemon Tetra's and 4 Peppered Cory's, would 1 x Electric Blue Acara be a possible option or a no go? Just love these fish! Beautiful!
Thanks for the amazing vids as always. Need a bit of guidance please.. I have a 50 gallon with a diverse community of Rams, angelfish, 2 EBAs, a few cherry barbs, a Chinese and Siamese algae eater... My two EBAs have just mated, unplanned by myself :( the eggs have been laid on driftwood and I can already see the aggression towards the other fish. Should I be more concerned about my EBA hurting the smaller fish, or any of the above mentioned fish eating the eggs/fry? It's too late to move them to another tank right? Should I try to build a cave of some sort around the eggs? Appreciate any advice please
You could scrape the eggs off the wood and tumble them but sometimes that causes the parents to fight and they will probably lay more. All the fish in the tank will eventually eat the fry unless either the other fish are removed or the fry. Always fun dealing with this the first time. 😀
Been looking for a centerpiece in my 55gallon tank, with skirt tetras, Honey Gourami, Cory Cats, and neon tetras. I was wondering if the Electric Blue Acara would be a good fit, and will give one a try. You answered all my questions, thank you!
@preiss0 So far so good, got an electric blue acara, and he's been very peaceful, not eating the neon tetras. He's still a juvenile though, might grow bigger and eat them.
hey! love the video! i have a question, i have a single EBA in a 33 gallon, do you think i can add another one to make a pair or do i need a bigger tank? :)
Great content! Can i please get your opinion on my 55g setup. Currently I have a full grown colony of 12 albino corydoras, 1 adult red eye tetra, and 1 recently purchased EBA. in a planted tank. Right now everyone gets along great. My question is would a breeding pair be ok in a 55 with all those corydoras? I was contemplating buying more EBA's from tbe same shop/ same size in hopes 2 will pair off, and rehome the other EBA's. Thank you in advance!!! Subbed for future content!!😎
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I just added 3 slightly smaller EBA's. The one I have had for the past month is being aggressive to all 3 smaller newcomers. Do you think this will settle down in time?
One of my favorites! Had two in community tank one had nipped tail and other got killed after 5 weeks, but never witnessed them getting harassed ? So I hoped that they’d get through , going to work out my other eb acra for some more Africans cause majority are Africans.
This is one of my favourite fish videos because they look stunning. Would this many be an issue when breeding starts? And would one soon end up with hundreds of babies? I'd love to do something similar but where I live, there's nowhere to offload excess fry.
It can be an issue, but most of that depends on the size of the tank. I have since moved them into a 125 gallon so it would be less of an issue. I have found most fry don't survive if there are other fish in the tank.
Ah thank you. I have a 65 gallon so was seriously considering a group of 6 so as to replicate what you've done. Did you move them to the 125 because they weren't working out in the smaller tank?
I love the Blue Acara, unfortunately mine isn’t the electric blue but he’s pretty cool. They will most definitely prey on anything smaller, my school of small tiger barbs ended up being eaten.
Wonderful profile video! I’ve got a newly setup 40 breeder that I just ordered 8 Congo tetras for. Planning on getting one or two of these electric blue acaras later on - would a pair be ok or would you just recommend getting one?

Very, VERY underated fish. Last week I had my first spawning... awesome parents. Now they are in my top 10 list.
Ale Vikingo that’s so cool - congrats!
The main reason they are underated is due to the fact that they are a hybrid that is man-made.

They did great with a couple blood parrrots, a couple of rainbow cichlids and school of bosemani, turqouise and red irian rainbowfish. Very friendly fish with fantastic personalities. I really miss him in my 125. He was my favorite.
Sorry you lost him!
Mine EBJD's did the exact same thing every time.
I just purchased a blue Acara and an electric blue. I added them to a tank with my Jack Dempsey ( they seem to hang out together) 2 blood parrots, 2 silver dollars and one Leopard Bush fish.
I love that fish!
Sharing a tank with Redhead Tapajos, Firemouths and soon Keyholes.
Very nice!
I've found Keyhole Cichlids get along very well with Acara's
I keep mine with keyhole cichlids and angels lol, I totally agree with ya.
Love the camera work and also a top presentation prof!
Thank you!
Great video, I have a empty 75 gallon and I want to get a dozen of these guys , with some yellow long fin bristlenose PLECOS , thanks for the suggestion, Electric blue Acura is a beautiful fish 🐟
Not disagreeing but isn’t 12 quite a lot for a 75G
Got my dirty dozen in a 75 gallon. No issues!
I kept a regular blue acara named Joker as the center piece fish in a 38 gallon with Glo tetras with a girl I dated a few years ago. The Glo tetras were my ex’s and the 38 gallon we got together. Everyone got along great to my knowledge anyway. I was only around for the first year of that
Beautiful in black sand, and black background
For sure!
I have three in a community! They do spar from time to time, but they do fine aside from that.
Such a perfect setup. Absolutely gorgeous. 🔥😍🔥😍 I'd love something like this. Another great video as always.
Thank you!
Always thorough! I have loved these videos over the years. Thanks!
One of my favorite fish, the best hybrids in my opinion
I agree!
I keep my electric blue acara with a load platys, mollies, corys, kuhli loaches, angel fish, golden wonder killi, and hes totally fine with all the live plants aswell in my 125g!
I bet that looks awesome!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics every corner you look something cool is going on!
I keep mine with Corys. The only aggression I see is when they breed.
very beautiful sharing and content.support u.see you friend.keep always safe.
Just moved a breeding pair into a 40 gallon to spawn, had them in with severums, congos, geophagus surinamensis beforehand and they all got along great
Mine leave my plants alone there just super chilled and very versatile fish works well with any tankmate I've put them with
Good to hear!
Make a separate video on breeding of electric blue acara
I have a pair in my 55 gallon with a school of white skirts, an albino parrot and some plecos and it's a very beautiful tank. I am thinking about adding some more but I would like to ensure they're females as the two I have are males and both full grown at just under 6 inches, I feel if I throw any more boys in there tehy're going to get beat up.
You basically described my living room tank. EB acara, Severum, Columbians and Corys
Very nice!
I put two of them in a 125 gallon with 2 convicts 2 green terror 1green severum. They are about 3mths old. The other fish are 2years + 4 to 5 inches. They are doing great.
Good to hear!
They just raised up my fry, without me taking the fry out.So excited.
Cool!
Im glad you did this it has been an amazing fish and those are wonderful looking fish
Thank you!
Love these fish , I have a pair in a 55gal that breadlast month I have a batch of fry in with the parents along with three Golden grahams to bristlenose plecos for live plants they've never uprooted any the plants and they don't bother any of the other fish in with baby fry in there very peaceful....
Very nice!
I’ve got a pair in my 75 gal with 4 dicus, I got them when they were juvenile like 2 inches big the discus were always bigger never had a problem with aggression.
I have one in a 40 gallon bow front with some tetras. It is doing great with them.
Very cool!
Hey Danny, what type of tetras do you have with him? I am looking for a school that I can add in with mine.
@@lukemapes2626 they are Glo Fish.
Super! I have five and they grow fast
Got that right I keep mine in black sand black background, full spectrum led
Thanks man, this is very timely. I have a 90g with rainbows, Corys, cherry barbs and platys. The platys are breeding like crazy, so I'm looking for a nice crowd control fight that wont attack my rainbows
These guys would probably do it. : -)
Thank you so much for the information of these beautiful species. I was always intimidated since I assumed they have aggressive behavior like convict. Anyway I really like this aquarium setup, beauty in the simplicity.
Thank you! Ya, they're not too aggressive. : -)
Good plan! One will always be the safer way to go.
I have an electric blue acara and ordered a blue acara, the natural acara and hope it gets along with the electric
Hi, did they get along?
doing the same this week. did it work out well for you?
My eb acaras and blue acara get along fine.
This is one of my favorite fish. They're so beautiful and have so much personality. I've thought about putting them in with my rams, but I have a breeding pair and I don't think it will work out well.
Ya, I wouldn't add one either in that case.
Always wondered if the orange or yellow on the top fin had anything to do with the sex .
I Would like to keep you updated
Thank you
John
Very cool!
Really looks amazing, how often do you have to do water changes with that big of a bio load in a 40 gal?
We do about 40% once a week - the pothos in that tank really helps keep nitrates under control.
Wow really beautiful acaras there :D
Once again great video Jason. I do own a pair of them with 2 pairs of Red Spotted Sevrums in a 40 gallon tank. Just wted to know if it's slow growing fish.
I think they are average growers, but nothing crazy either way.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Thank you very much.
i blame you right now... just added to the buy list 4 of them... i had blue acaras before and man are they pretty and peaceful fish...
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! I'll take the blame. :-)
Very beautiful fish! Can they be kept together with African cichlids?
Usually not a good idea because they are so much less aggressive.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ok. Thank you for your heads up!
I have one male in my 125 gallon mixed cichlids tank with sail fin pleco syno cats mono and some botias oh and my crayfish
I have that same fish with my mbuna and peacocks cichlids and they get along
I have them with my rainbow fish and have never had a problem
Thanks for sharing your experience!
The Pristella will probably work out better - the Buenos Aires can be fairly aggressive.
Beautiful fish love them ❤️😍💙
I have a 55 Gallon with 2 dwarf gourami 1xM 1xF, 10 Lemon Tetra's and 4 Peppered Cory's, would 1 x Electric Blue Acara be a possible option or a no go? Just love these fish! Beautiful!
I think so. I would get one on the smaller side - should make the mix more likely to work when you introduce him.
Thank you for your response. Much appreciated
How did you go with the Neon tetra ? Im interested too
@preiss0 So far so good, got an electric blue acara, and he's been very peaceful, not eating the neon tetras. He's still a juvenile though, might grow bigger and eat them.
Keep them coming Jason!!
Thank you!
I really enjoy your videos. Thanks man
hey! love the video! i have a question, i have a single EBA in a 33 gallon, do you think i can add another one to make a pair or do i need a bigger tank? :)
If it’s a 33 long you should be ok.
Ive seen these in my lfs amd was worried they might be too aggressove due to their size. I think these guys will be next on my list
They are usually pretty laid back.
They would be ok, but your plants might go missing. Haha
@@PrimeTimeAquatics 😂 thank you!!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I just added 3 slightly smaller EBA's. The one I have had for the past month is being aggressive to all 3 smaller newcomers. Do you think this will settle down in time?
Very nice fish
I have electric blue german chiclid, and one regular coloured german ram chiclid.
From what I've heard (haven't kept them myself), the standard blue acara are a little more aggressive?
Prime Time Aquatics mine sometimes scuffled with the rainbow shark but mostly left the others like the angels alone.
I would LOVE 2 blue acaras
Great video 👍🏾
Thank you!
So they can go with dwarf gouramis and jumbo red eye tetra? 🤔 🤔 Would they be cool?
I would think so.
Gorgeous fish.
Hehe this video mentions every single fish in my newly set up 120: EBA , geophagus, severum, guorami
Well that’s cool!
Wonderful profile video! I’ve got a newly setup 40 breeder that I just ordered 8 Congo tetras for. Planning on getting one or two of these electric blue acaras later on - would a pair be ok or would you just recommend getting one?
I might just get one. That way you won’t have to worry about breeding aggression.
