1. Kitchen items. 2. Camping stuff. All I ever needed was a futon in the back of my Prius. It is my capsule hotel. 3. Art supplies. My biggest weakness!
I regret buying clothes that don’t fit my personality. I really like vintage clothes, but every time I buy them (colourful dresses, skirts etc.), I realise it just isn’t my style. I really feel comfortable in basic clothes.
I can relate :) Sometimes we see clothing on others and really like them, so we think we should incorporate them into our own style, but then something just feels off somehow. :)
I'm the same. It has taken me so long to realise that whilst I love looking at bold colours and prints, I just feel self conscious when I am wearing them. My wardrobe is slowly becoming a mix of neutrals and most items work well together so has made getting ready so much quicker, easier and stress free.
In terms of souvenirs, what I do now is bring back snacks that you can't buy anywhere else. And I bring that back for myself and friends and family. Snacks are always better than a magnet.
I love magnets. I have bad memory and seeing them helps jog my memory sometimes better than pics do. Snacks are great to. Or just some kind of local cuisine like sauce or something.
That's what I did just recently. Went to the Czech Republic and brought a chocolate stuffed with Lentilky to work - cool souvenir that did last as long as it was being hyped over, not one minute longer than that. ;)
I've bought a Christmas tree ornament as a family trip souvenir on a number of occasions. We talk about those trips when we decorate the tree. Other than that, just pictures.
i bring a shot glass to my sister of all the places i visit. the objects are not big do it does not take up space. i'm kinda jealouse i never started a collection for myself. We both don't drink spirit though. ^^
Regrets: Every handbag I purchased that failed to serve my need; overpriced and useless hair products; useless home decor; and gourmet food I thought I would like. Though I regret all of it, I’m glad I bought it to teach me not to do it again.😉
Regrets: Buying a new outfit for every single special event. Now I just wear tried & true outfits I already own that really flatter my shape. I notice that I actually get way more compliments with certain staple outfits, than with frequent “new” items.
Ah yes, true! Or going to that one "amazing dress shop" and have your friends convince you that dress looks amazing on you and you buy it. To only wear it to a wedding once, hate how it looks and feels and sell it again ASAP.
My ten regretted purchases are 1. Too many decorative items- clutter is clutter even if beautiful! I keep a few but have lost count of the many items I have donated due to feeling overwhelmed! Some quite expensive too 😔 now it's one in one out! 2. Random hair/beauty products and perfumes- I now only buy a few tried & tested favourite products. 3. Handbags- must have owned about 30 at one point - now just stick with a couple of practical and neutral bags ( sold/ donated the others) 4. Various shoe & boot styles- now only wear comfortable and practical styles (donated the others) 5. Lots of bedlinen/towels- have 2 quality sets now, donated the rest. 6. CD player/radio- just donated this and the last of my CDs as can find any track on RUclips! 7. Craft supplies- bought so many that I never used , have donated all but a few that will definitely use. 8. Too many diaries/ notebooks/journals- end up saving the 'prettiest' for best then discover years later when my taste has changed. Now only buy what I intend to use immediately! 9. 'Special ' clothing that I save for occasions which don't arrive until I no longer fit, suit or like them ! These invariably end up donated 🤦♀️ 10. Souvenirs and tickets from every place I visit be it gallery, museum, theatre, zoo, holidays- these are so difficult to declutter so best not to buy/collect in the first place. Oh and finally 😀11. Beautiful greetings cards, postcards, envelopes and stamps, just donated all to a special charity as have made decision to stop buying/keeping/sending cards for a multitude of reasons !!!!!!🧚♀️
I used to feel the pressure that most women feel to live up to Society’s beauty standards. I spent soooooooooo much money on make-up, beauty products, and fad clothing. I gave it all up. I regret all that money I spent that could have been put into savings for my retirement.
I have found out (after buying too much skincare) was that all I really needed daily were: 1. A good face cleanser 2. A good moisturizer 3. A good sunscreen. I use a physical exfoliated and a sheet mask once a week. And that is all. My skin is so good I don’t even need makeup. Just sunscreen.
I'm 20 and I'm so proud of myself 1. I never spent money on clothes , i always wear cheap and comfy clothes which i never regret buying 2. I never spent money on heels 3. I never spent money on expensive makeup I'm happy and I'm mother of 15 home plants, try to be happy what you have, you're beautiful 🌹
I'm a sucker for electronics. A few years ago I bought the Nintendo Switch thinking I would play all the time while my girlfriend watched TV. I played for a little while then it just started gathering dust. Ultimately, I gifted it to my nephew last Christmas, and he loved it. Overall, my impulse buying has slowed alot, but I still have regrets because some electronic items were very costly. Thank you for sharing your experiences, Vera. Have a great weekend.
I feel you on the different glasses. I used to be a bartender and I felt that I ‘needed’ all kinds of different glasses because of my work. Fast forward 10 years to me being a stay at home mom, I drink my wine from an empty nutella glass. So yeaaaah...
It was a very good tip to tell people not to buy too much stuff when you are starting a new hobby. I used to feel the need to buy everything possible to do a good job with a new hobby and then my interest in it, or my lack of skill in that hobby would fade. I recently started making jewelry and was able to buy just enough to see if I would like doing it. So I now have less to store and organize and I realized that I don't want to make jewelry excessively so I'm glad I didn't spend more on supplies. I really enjoyed this video. Thank you!
Well done, you! About 10 years ago, a friend introduced me to card-making. I happily spent the next few weeks collecting every conceivable item to use in this exciting new hobby. I made half a dozen beautiful cards. Since then, how many cards have I made? NONE!!!!! And yet the stuff still sits there, taking up lots of room, waiting.....
Thansk for sharing Gerry and Dawn. Yes I think it can be very tempting to buy all kinds of new things when taking up a hobby, you get caught up in the enthusiasm :) Now I like to take it slow, start with the minimum and see how often I actually use it. Did the same thing with gear for this channel :)
Yes I can relate :) I just try to focus on what things I can change going forward, and not so much on the things I've bought before :) Thanks for being vegan 🤗🌷
When I was in high school I wanted to be "popular" and wear what the cool kids wore. This resulted in me buying expensive clothing to just fit in. I totally regret it now! Great video xx
Yeah looking back you think it is a waste but you were behaving in a way to keep yourself safe in the "school tribe". It shouldn't be that way but most kids want to fit in and so will do anything to not be a target. If not, unless they have their peers respect, they have to endure the gauntlet of taunts and bullying.
I didn’t buy this but got it as a wedding gift, and that’s silver silverware... it got dark only after one use and polishing is sooo time consuming. We recently switched to stainless steel very high quality utensils and love every single bite off of them. Time is so valuable, don’t waste it doing work you can otherwise easily avoid by looking for an alternative.
Ah yes great example! :) If things are that high maintenance, I don't really think it's worth it either. Unless you're someone who gets a lot of joy out of them and doesn't mind the upkeep :)
I recently bought clothes on my journey...a lot of clothes. I was so ashamed I had to vlog. But, before starting this minimalist journey I wouldn’t have regretted it. Needless to say, I won’t do it again. RUclips is actually helping me be a better minimalist!
You are also investing in your long term health as high heels and poor footwear contribute to back, hip and knee pain as well as foot issues such as bunions, hammer toes and nerve pain 😊
Till recently I used to buy many stuff I really don't need but I realized that it's an emotional issue, doing that just to fill a gap in my life. I'm 50 now and thanks God I got in a place where I know that I shouldn't do that anymore and focus more on meaningful things in life, still working on it, I'm in the beginning of the (simple-content-life) journey. yesterday went to the mall and DID NOT buy anything it's a so good feeling :) Thank you Vera you inspire me a lot, sending love..
@@tinalemna7998 for me, it was divorcing. Ex-husband hoarded everything and had his own walk in closet packed with clothes. My closet was a spacious quiet room. I only had a few clothing items I really loved and fit my lifestyle. When he was out of my life, i felt so free. I could walk and not step on stuff piled on the floors!
Pancake Circus my husband keeps way more than I do but he’s a good person so I deal with it. I do dream sometimes of starting over and keeping just my favorite things. 😊
Yes!!!!! I used to waste so much money on make-up. I had a huge collection of make-up. I no longer wear it. I no longer feel the pressure to live up to society’s beauty standards. Women are held to so many beauty standards that are just designed to part them with money. We are targeted by commercials and our peers. It is perfectly acceptable to skip all the expensive beauty crap.
I regret 🤦 my over priced Louis Vuitton bag. I thought to myself while I was downsizing to become a minimalist I sold all my Dooney and Bourke handbags and for some crazy reason I thought I would be happy with just 1 expensive bag. 😂 Needless to say I use my mini North face backpack everyday and the Louis sits in a drawer 😭
Haha thanks for sharing Jessica, like Ema said I love the honesty :D Yes it's tempting to want to buy something new when going minimalist, that one perfect thing that will replace all the others. Sometimes it doesn't work out that way though haha. Like TheOneWhoChangesHerLife suggested, maybe selling it is an option? Have a great day!
@@anouk7800 I thought about it, but it's perfect for weddings and graduation partys because it's a small crossbody. So it's smarter to just keep it, it is a pretty cute bag
Past Regrets: Eating at some restaurants where the food is overpriced, not tasty and/or healthy. I once bought a used Lexus that turned into a money pit. It was my most expensive regret. Future regret: I want a quad copter drone video camera but minimalism is winning out thus far.
I have stopped buying storage stuffs for i enjoy the empty space, as you say ! Inspired by your video i feel happy when i don't buy all that i see. Thank you Vera !
That's how i feel too sometimes i walk around in a store, thinking "i don't need this and this and ..." Makes me feel good, knowing that i can resist the urge of buying😉
Regrets; expensive designer bags that I couldn’t live without then never used because they cost a fortune and I was paranoid that something would happen to them, overpriced very expensive skincare potions, makeup when I actually only wear lipstick, stationary when I already had enough to start up my own shop! and sports equipment that was a phase then just got in the way. I could probably think of a few more but I’m already cringing with embarrassment. 😊💐
Like you Vera, I regret buying loads of clothes, shoes & bags (especially when I was living in Dublin, I was so stressed out by a job hated but paid good money so I kept it, until I finally lost it, a true blessing!) and also skin care products. When I returned to Italy and moved in with my partner (who's always been a minimalist) I started feeling overwhelmed and anxious about all the stuff I owned and since then I've been slowly but methodically getting rid of loads of clothes and objects which do not have their own place in my house, as my golden rule is that everything has to be clean, tidy and have its own space, otherwise it has to go asap. I still own many books because I have a spacious bookshelf, but many others have left the building as they say 😊 so although I am not exactly a minimalist I look to what's essential in my life and say bye to all the things I no longer need or love. This has saved me lads of money which I'm obviously very happy about! Love from Italy! (Btw, have been to Holland a couple of times years ago, loved it!).
I love your videos! One thing that I am trying to be more mindful of purchasing is craft supplies. I really think about it first before purchasing any craft items. They can pile up quickly. Also, home decor is another thing. I am mindful of purchasing home decor. I am starting to declutter my home decor and keep what I love and use.
Thank you for talking about festival concert pressures. I felt like I needed to be able to go to them but I couldn't afford it and I have severe anxiety. When people would talk about music I would worry and feel embarrassed and thankfully now I can look back and see how sad that was. Now I need to remember that pressure can be applied to other things
You're very welcome Jules. It's perfectly okay not to go to festivals and to do things differently than others, just follow your gut and do what works for you! 🤗🌼
I am hearing you, sister! Mine currently is being used to dry my swimming towel (I swam yesterday) so at least that's a step in an exercise-related direction! 😂
It’s 2019 and I’m still using my IPhone 6s and it works perfectly fine ever since it released I bought it like around 6/7 years ago . My worst regretful purchase was makeup I used to have a huge big amount of makeup like 50+ blushes / 100+ eyeshadow palettes and all are almost high end I came across this obsession when I started to watch minimalist videos and learning the minimalist lifestyle or Konmari method of decluttering I sold some of them and some gave away and some had to be thrown out cuz they are mostly expired I spend less time doing my makeup 5-10 mins every day now I think that’s my worst regretful purchase ever cuz beauty community and beauty advertisement are really really dangerous. And also cosplay wigs I don’t go to any cosplay events cuz I live in small town ( countryside ) and plus I only can do cosplay on social websites which is not well I’d like to say not worth it for me I don’t have those much time to styling and making costumes . I used to have 20+ wigs now I only have 4 cuz they are my fav characters :’) For me I’ve learnt that makeup does expired Having minimal makeup collection ( I only have 12 items ) does help me to do many productive things and I don’t follow the trends or any RUclips beauty videos . Skincare also for me as 21 yrs teenage girl I don’t use serum :D I used to have different types of facial skincare omg you can’t imagine having like 2 big cabinets filled with skincare and all are high end skincare Now I come to think and I did give away most of them I only use moisturizer/ facial foam / Essence and sunscreen That’s all we need , ain’t we ? Yes now I’m using all cruelty free products :D
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences, loved reading your comment! I also think minimal skincare and make-up is great, unless you have certain specific needs I think it's all we need :)
It's 2020 and I still own an iPhone 4 that was passed down from a friend. It is a little slow when I'm trying to use the internet, but it texts and calls just fine
I regret buying expensive clothes I never wore. I also regret buying “limited edition” items. I completely agree with you about music festivals. I mostly went to hang out with close friends.
Another great video! WELL DONE! I especially like the fact that you added a "learning" box with the text on the left side of the video, stating things you've learned from your experiences. Everyone watches youtube videos for different reasons, but my main reason is to learn something. I love to be inspired of course, but I really feel the value of a video if I've learned something. I'm an academic so I consider it a worthy and incredibly meaningful part of my life: to learn. Thank you for this. Also, my biggest purchasing regrets are buying clothes from H&M (duh, fast fashion is horrible). Every single thing I have ever bought from that store has random holes and loose threads after only a few short months of wear. Never again! Lots of love from Northern California! xoxo
Bravo Vera! I just caught this video. I think the key to living a simple and meaningful life is having confidence in who you are. It took me MUCH longer to reach the place you are, and my regret list is much longer. However, I’m not dwelling on the past but appreciating the growth and new life of freedom that I have now. Blessings from a fellow HSP introvert and admirer of all your videos!
I do love a boot as I live in the country and I like to be practical and comfortable but I do have a few to many. Can only wear one pair at a time 😂 I have gone from ten pairs to 4 now so feel a little better about it 😊
Great video! I have a lot of the exact same ones! Oh, if only I could go back in time and tell myself, “You won’t care about that in the future - don’t buy it. It will become more a nuisance than a pleasure”!
Hi Vera, thanks for this video. I regret buying a lot of glasses for cocktails to impress people and we don’t even drink. To top it off we don’t even entertain! A lot of dishes! I donated all of it!
Haha yes I can relate :) Reading these comments, there are so many people who bought all those glasses and never really used them! We are not alone haha
Reasonably expensive clothing can be a good investment to an extent. Of course, I don't buy for the brand, but I usually invest in upper brand shoes and it pays off with great and durable shoes. Reasonably expensive can just mean an investment into quality, if you know what you are doing. Edit: also, jackets, bags, and other things that need to be durable.
Yes quality over quantity :) In my experience, things that are a little bit more expensive are usually better quality, but the high-end stuff isn't necessarily higher quality. Though I always recommend just reading reviews to find out :)
My biggest “waste of money” was coffee at Starbucks, skincare products, and shoes. I realized that I could’ve saved A LOT of money but I’ve learned and I only go to Starbucks for special occasions like with my mom or brother. I want to donate and sell my shoes I don’t wear since I want to work on wearing a barefoot minimalist shoe. Thank you for your content as always. ❤️🌻
I already lived a frugal life since teenager so it's hard to find the thing I regret buying. I'm unsocial so I never go to social events. Used phone/laptop for 5-7yrs until it broke before changing and even still use formal shirts from 2007 (and some undershirts from 1998) for work now lol. I almost never buy new clothes. Maybe once a year. Though I travel abroad regularly, I always bought/gift edible things so they can experience the taste and won't leave any clutter. Hmm... Maybe, the one thing I regret buying is Musical instruments. I bought a violin and electone. A month later, they just collect dust. Even until now lol.
Watching many minimalist videos, I have come to realize I grew up minimalist. I only had a few pieces of clothing growing up. I repeatedly repeated same outfits every 2-3 weeks in high school. We weren't poor, but I disliked asking parents for money. My first car was 14 years old and sold it back to the state for 1500 right before it gave out. Never once did it leave me stranded in the street... Fast forward 15 years and I still practice minimalism. I donate all the extra things that I only require and live a very organized life.
I feel you about the ref magnets, Keychain, shirts and souvenir items. People just tend to automatically buy them for you or you buy it for them without thought as to why you are doing it. When someone gives me stuff from their travels like key chains and shirts that have the name of the place they went to, I say "thank you", but it really isn't something that is meaningful to me. Sure, I appreciate the thought that they remembered me when they were there. But if I do not have a use for it (example: I already have a lot of Keychains given by friends and less keys), I feel somehow obliged to accept it and feign a zealous appreciation so as not to disappoint them. I somehow feel stressed on thinking about where to put it or when to use it. But if they give me food exclusively made on that place, I appreciate that more..it's like sharing an experience of that place they've been to through the taste buds. It makes sense. Sometimes, I automatically buy stuff for people, too, during my travels out of the need to please or I just feel like it's an obligation.. But it really shouldn't. Thanks for pointing this out. Will buy food next time. 😁
Interesting you mentioned souvenirs. I just returned from Japan and most of my souvenirs were pamphlets and ticket stubs from museums. I actually had money left over which I didn't expect 😊🤗
For souvenir, I like to buy food/sweets/seasonings that are typical in that culture or country. It is enjoyable, won't take up space but you brought something back. It was a great video, thank you for sharing!
You go, girl! and continue ditching all that superfluous consumerist programming. People who would judge me for not serving a cocktail in the appropriate glass are not the kind of people I would want to bother with in my life anyway 😄. As for my regrets: a gym membership and dancing lessons during a really busy time in my career when I was low on self-esteem that I never had the time to use to the full, along with a correspondence course in creative writing that I never got around to finishing either, before it expired. High heels when I was young and thought that being a sexy tease was really an achievement, but which I now have to thank for the bad bunions I have; and several other things. Oh, and I don't regret having bought the odd expensive well-fitting and beautiful item of clothing, but what I do regret is not having worn them ore often, i.e. saving them for a "special occasion" all the time until they no longer suit me (too youthful, etc.) instead of really enjoying them as much as possible, because life is short. Which is why I also put out the "good" dishes whenever I feel like it now and spend less money on things and more on experiences together with the people I love and care about.
Agree 100% on the cell phone. I don’t ever buy the latest model with electronics. For souvenirs I don’t purchase them, however I have been the receiver of souvenirs especially from my team at work. I love that they thought of me when I receive it, but sometimes they are gifts I’ll never use (ie a Plate). My favorite souvenirs are pens. They are something I can use completely up, aren’t very expensive but still show the person you care/thought of them.
I love this video concept! I regret buying a lot of things: makeup, notebooks I don't need, books I didn't end up liking, and things for my horse that didn't end up working for him. Funnily, I also regret spending money on gifts. Ever since I've gotten into minimalism, I've gotten wary of buying something for someone that they might not use or even like.
Enjoyed your video. I used to buy STORAGE CONTAINERS for the crap I thought I needed. But I’ve learned and now I have narrowed my dishes to 2 of everything. Stainless steel straws and tumblers to reduce plastic use I have NO trinkets or collectibles other than my use of candles I make. I’m still working on my clothing and want to capsule my wardrobe and shoes. It’s been a journey but I’m happier and feel free of THINGS. Thank you so much for sharing. 💚
Hi Vera, I can relate to so many of these things. When my husband and I first got married we bought Waterford wine glasses, champagne glasses, basically for the same reason you said and we never use them. I still have them but that was a waste of money. Other regrets are expensive handbags that I got tired of but felt like I needed to keep them. I’ve since given them away. Souvenirs too. 😊
I stopped buying toys for children. They get a gift card to somewhere. Roller rink, movie theater, bowling alley. Small town here lol. But on holidays my children get 3 gifts if they give up 1 toy they already own plus trip to the city for something like indoor water park or trampoline zone , Build a Bear, zoo, etc. We go to the city 3x a year so it's worth the trip.
When I was working in the corporate world I also bought too many dry clean only clothes! We also sent all my husband’s shirts to the dry cleaner. Such a waste of money!
I find most dry clean clothes can go in the washing machine on a wool or delicate cycle. A heated clothes airer works well for drying instead of a tumble dryer if they can't be dried outside :)
A one the things I regret buying is trendy and over priced clothing. I went through that myself when I was in high school. Now I do spend a bit of money on my clothing but I don’t buy nearly as much, buy what I like and enjoy wearing and I use them until I can’t anymore. Some the things I do but I buy it with the knowing how the quality is. I much rather buy something a bit more in money but last me a long time.
Not caring what others think, this is true for me. I am 47 years old and still live with my parents. It works out for all of us as I get free room and board, and they get free labor and contributions to the household! I do regret buying lots of clothes when I was younger, as well as a new car. I would have bought it used. Now I don't own a car, so I am saving. Thanks for the video Vera! 😊
As someone who always bought the older model of pjone, i find they break faster/slow down much faster to the point where you may have to replace them sooner
Wow, someone who put into words why I hate festivals or standing at concerts/gigs. 😮 As a teenager I spent a lot of money on shows that I didn't enjoy/shows that I didn't end up going to because I was anxious about the crowd because I thought being a fan of an artist (and I love a lot of artists) meant that I had to go to every tour/event near where I live. Now I only go to about 1-2 shows a year of artists I absolutely love and I have a designated seat!
Thanks for sharing Kerry. Yes festivals and concerts are not for everyone! :) I didn't mention this in the video but I used to go to a lot of concerts too, and while I always enjoyed them (because they were bands that I actually loved), I couldn't handle the crowds, and one time I actually fainted because I wanted to stand near the stage. Now I just get designated seats like you, or if that's not possible I just stand more towards the exists and just enjoy things from there. Much better :)
Birkenstocks. Madewell backpack. Longchamp tote. Brand name stuff. expensive baby clothes. Since ive thrifted a lot and have enjoyed those thrifted things a lot more instead of feeling guilty looking at things that cost me over 100 each. lol I love saving, thrifting and spending money on going out doing fun things.
Thank you for this wonderful video. I use to be very insecure and unhappy with myself in my late teens and in my early 20's. I use to overspend on unnecessary items such as clothes, make-up that I don't normally use, DVDs and Hello Kitty stuff (my favourite cartoon character) when I was away in uni. I have cut back by selling these unnecessary items on eBay. I only buy things that are suitable for me such as clothes, as long they're not expensive or way over the top, toiletries that I mainly use and make up that is right for my skin. I feel I got enough of Hello Kitty things, I only keep the ones that are special to me.
I’ve been on a journey to find more low waste and eco friendly products. I’ve found some gems I’ll stick with, but also a lot of products that simply don’t do the job. I don’t have money to waste.
Jeans! Lol I always buy jeans because they are cute or fit an ideal of what I want to dress like but I never wear jeans, they are always uncomfortable and I regret wearing them within minutes of leaving the house...I love how they look but they dont work for me
Jessica Watson my winter bottom half - I wear leggings and socks under my boots-way more comfy than pantyhose and a lot warmer. Also, the socks are same brand and style, black like the leggings, so it’s a simple machine wash and no wasted time sorting socks.
Lots of plants were dead, started with succulents, then shifted to edible plants, then shifted to houseplants, a lot has died but some survived and grew. I just wished I started with houseplants
I regret fall in love to someone that don't deserve my love, buying something that expensive clothes, home decor, perfumes ,bags, accessories, a lot of books that I no longer useful to others ,unhealthy snacks. Paying car insurance that unnecessary for my life. . Also, regret of wasting energy, time in mean nothing. Thank you very much for these videos 💕I've learned a lot .
I agree that you should make electronics last as long as possible, but I disagree about going with an older model replacement. I go with the most recent model, or maybe the prior model so it will be useful for a good long time.
I have bought a lot of craft supplies, painting supplies, jewelry making supplies, books that I couldn't get into etc. Keeping those things around has just made me feel worse every time I see them. I am in the process of donating some of these items.
I used to buy lot of junk jwelleries souviniers sauces condiments which i hardly finished before their expiry dates. Now i dont do it i shop very mindfuly
What I regret buying was expensive skin care products that doesn’t really work for me and unnecessary furnitures. That made me realized that I don’t want to spend my money on things that I don’t really need and become a minimalist.
Thank you for sharing your though. I do agree in many items you mentioned. But one item that I have a bit different idea is mobile phone. Because I do not run after technology. I study the model I want to buy and have a traget in my mind. I use Samsung Note8 and bought it since the first day. It was expensive, I know. But I aimed to use it at least 3 years. I didn't choose the option with package. So I spent only mobile phone cost and spend less in package for each month. I use my phone everyday for work and personal things. So at the bottom line, I think it's worth to spend on expensive phone if we have a good plan for it. I use Samsung note1 for 3 years till it die. Next us Samsung note3 for almost 4 years then now using Samsung note8 for 2 years already. And plan to buy next Samsung note11. I know I love to write by pen and note series is the best for my choice. This is what I have plan.
Thanks for sharing! :) I agree, sometimes it will be worth it to go for an expensive model if you really have a plan for it. The most important thing is being intentional and mindful with your purchases, and not just buying the newest models for no reason. Technology can also be a good investment, it really depends on what you're planning to use it for. :) In my case, since I only really use it to call and text people and look up things online, the older models work well too.
I regret buying a large shelf because a couple weeks later I was becoming a minimalist. That shelf is gone. My friends that helped me put the shelf together I gave it to them.
I used to buy lots of make up products... omg, like 10 different blushes. I only have two cheeks 😂 and this list can go on and on 😂 now I owe only things I need and actually fit me
Vera you are naturally gorgeous as you are. Enjoyed this video and points covered. We all make mistakes buying things we think we need but do not. Now I only buy what I need and good quality.
I wish I hadn’t bought so many fast fashion clothes and shoes. And I also have a great problem with taking up a new hobby. As soon as I got interested in something I start buying everything that relates to the subject. But the problem is that I give up this hobby very quickly( And then I feel guilty and depressed(
Thanks for sharing Olga, it's never too late to learn! :) Next time when you pick up a new hobby, see if you can start with just the basics first. Works great for me
Thanks for watching! What are some purchases that you wish you hadn't made?
Simple Happy Zen Expensive beauty products that promised miracles in my skin... Of course, that never happened 😅
Yes! If something like that exists, we would all buy it hahaha
1. Kitchen items.
2. Camping stuff. All I ever needed was a futon in the back of my Prius. It is my capsule hotel.
3. Art supplies. My biggest weakness!
@Anil Ramsuran envious?
Gadgets, clothing
I regret buying clothes that don’t fit my personality. I really like vintage clothes, but every time I buy them (colourful dresses, skirts etc.), I realise it just isn’t my style. I really feel comfortable in basic clothes.
I can relate :) Sometimes we see clothing on others and really like them, so we think we should incorporate them into our own style, but then something just feels off somehow. :)
This is a great comment/realization, and I wish others could come across this.
Lori D this is so me!! I realised that just bc I found an item pretty doesn’t mean I should buy it bc I may not even wear it
Check out some videos about Kibbe body types! Helped me to accept that just not all the cute stuff looks good on MY body.
Yes! Great idea :D
I love magnets. I have bad memory and seeing them helps jog my memory sometimes better than pics do. Snacks are great to. Or just some kind of local cuisine like sauce or something.
That's what I did just recently. Went to the Czech Republic and brought a chocolate stuffed with Lentilky to work - cool souvenir that did last as long as it was being hyped over, not one minute longer than that. ;)
This is exactly what I do, buy a food item as souvenir.
Cool idea. I may use that one, or local beverages.
My biggest regret: Buying so many toys, books, art supplies, and clothes.
I am right now in my decluttering stage! Thanks, Minimalism!
Thanks for sharing and good luck with decluttering! :)
I have a hard time giving up books and art supplies lol
The souvenir thing so true I never understood why people would bring me a souvenir of the place they visited it means nothing to me
I love collecting key chains and crap from around the globe but I think of it now differently
Yeah 😂, just send me pictures 💪
Same here.
Haha yes that's the important thing :D
Regrets: Buying a new outfit for every single special event. Now I just wear tried & true outfits I already own that really flatter my shape. I notice that I actually get way more compliments with certain staple outfits, than with frequent “new” items.
Yes me too! :) Thanks for sharing
Ah yes, true! Or going to that one "amazing dress shop" and have your friends convince you that dress looks amazing on you and you buy it. To only wear it to a wedding once, hate how it looks and feels and sell it again ASAP.
Spend less money on things, rather spend it on experiences. It really is the best way to live a life fulfilled.
Great video
Thanks so much Marco! 😄✌
This is me and my boyfriend's relationship motto :)
My ten regretted purchases are
3. Handbags- must have owned about 30 at one point - now just stick with a couple of practical and neutral bags ( sold/ donated the others)
4. Various shoe & boot styles- now only wear comfortable and practical styles (donated the others)
These invariably end up donated 🤦♀️
Bought too much skin care products. Total waste of money.
Yes there's only so much we can use (and that actually helps out skin :))
I did the same thing with hair care!
I feel you 💔
I have found out (after buying too much skincare) was that all I really needed daily were:
1. A good face cleanser
2. A good moisturizer
3. A good sunscreen.
I use a physical exfoliated and a sheet mask once a week.
And that is all. My skin is so good I don’t even need makeup. Just sunscreen.
but you can always use it up!
Honestly, I realized that the clothes I already had in my closet were enough to get me the look I wanted. Wish I knew that sooner!
Yes most of us already have enough cool stuff to make it work :)
I'm 20 and I'm so proud of myself
1. I never spent money on clothes , i always wear cheap and comfy clothes which i never regret buying
2. I never spent money on heels
3. I never spent money on expensive makeup
I'm happy and I'm mother of 15 home plants, try to be happy what you have, you're beautiful 🌹
I love it :D Say hi from me to your plants! :D
@@SimpleHappyZen sure❤
Nice
You are amazing
I'm a sucker for electronics. A few years ago I bought the Nintendo Switch thinking I would play all the time while my girlfriend watched TV. I played for a little while then it just started gathering dust. Ultimately, I gifted it to my nephew last Christmas, and he loved it. Overall, my impulse buying has slowed alot, but I still have regrets because some electronic items were very costly. Thank you for sharing your experiences, Vera. Have a great weekend.
Thanks Justin! :) I was actually thinking about the nintendo switch too but I didn't go for it haha.
I am a Nintendo fan at heart but even I wanted to not buy games as much anymore. Minimalism FTW
I feel you on the different glasses. I used to be a bartender and I felt that I ‘needed’ all kinds of different glasses because of my work.
Fast forward 10 years to me being a stay at home mom, I drink my wine from an empty nutella glass. So yeaaaah...
😂😂😂😂😂
Omg I do this too!!
😂😂😂😂
lol! I tend to drink water from old powerade/gatorade bottles... I just wash them like any other bottle and use them for months, lol!!
Omg all our drinking glasses are PB jars. #rustic 😉😂
I wished I hadn't bought so much clothes and jewellery from fast fashion brands, but also non cruelty free and vegan products 💔
Yup me too :) Thanks Mariela 🤗🌷
Yeah looking back you think it is a waste but you were behaving in a way to keep yourself safe in the "school tribe". It shouldn't be that way but most kids want to fit in and so will do anything to not be a target. If not, unless they have their peers respect, they have to endure the gauntlet of taunts and bullying.
I regret spending money on friend's destination weddings.
I'm glad that you learned though. Not easy, I'm sure
Would you regret not sharing the experience and memories of the wedding with your close friends?
@@nataliebutler honestly no. The reality of the financial burden cast a shadow over the memory.
Thanks for sharing Mara! :) No need to feel bad about it, no one is perfect 😘
I really dont regret....Im just happy that I grew, the minut I knew, life can be so much easier. 😍
Very true! :) Thanks Wilma
Well said.
I feel the high heel one so much. I'm glad I realized this at 22 years old so I don't waste any more money on heels
Yes so painful 😂
I agree, high heels are painful. Prob invented by a man...lol. I can only wear flat shoes, I go for comfort. 😁
It was actually invented by a men. The king of france (Ludwig XIV(?)) was short so he was using high heels and it became trendy since there 🤣
You are also investing in your long term health as high heels and poor footwear contribute to back, hip and knee pain as well as foot issues such as bunions, hammer toes and nerve pain 😊
Thanks so much for sharing Lara, you're doing awesome! :) And I know, walking out of a store without buying something is a great feeling :D
You are very wise. Some of us do not learn these things until we are in our 40s or 50s!
Thank you Teresa :) Better late than never I always say :D
teresa P. I agree! I was 50 before I figured it out. I was always a minimalist but still spent too much money.
@@tinalemna7998 there were far more serious reasons to divorce him. Not appropriate to explain here. Hoarding had nothing to do with it.
Make up, so much wasted money on make up I never really used, especially lipstick
Yes make-up could have gone on my list as well. :)
I have so many eye palettes lol
I regret buying many perfumes. I have so many brands ranging from Hugo boss to Hermes !!! My favorite is only one and all are totally waste !!!
I regret 🤦 my over priced Louis Vuitton bag. I thought to myself while I was downsizing to become a minimalist I sold all my Dooney and Bourke handbags and for some crazy reason I thought I would be happy with just 1 expensive bag.
😂 Needless to say I use my mini North face backpack everyday and the Louis sits in a drawer 😭
jessica victor Hahah that’s funny! Love the honesty 🤩
Why not sell the Louis? Sure you wont get full price back, but there is a whole market out there for second hand brand names ;)
Which louie and how much do you want for it?
Past Regrets: Eating at some restaurants where the food is overpriced, not tasty and/or healthy. I once bought a used Lexus that turned into a money pit. It was my most expensive regret. Future regret: I want a quad copter drone video camera but minimalism is winning out thus far.
Hahahaha I love it :D
Toni Ann lol just had chicken and waffles today for lunch. Love their waffles.
I have stopped buying storage stuffs for i enjoy the empty space, as you say ! Inspired by your video i feel happy when i don't buy all that i see. Thank you Vera !
Thank you so much Jaya! :)
That's how i feel too
sometimes i walk around in a store, thinking "i don't need this and this and ..."
Makes me feel good, knowing that i can resist the urge of buying😉
That color sweater looks so beautiful on you! Never thought of beige being a pretty color, but on the right person it seems to glow.
Haha thanks so much Cassie! :)
Haha thanks for sharing and no need for ambarrassment :D Enjoy your day!!
I never regret music festivals. They are like my favorite thing to do.
Thanks so much for sharing your story, loved reading your comment! :) And so great you visited us here in the cold north from Italy :)
Ah yes great examples, thanks for sharing Laurie! :D
I regret buying Expensive exercise equipment that I currently use as a "coat rack " grrrrrr
Hahaha yes I've been there actually :D Wasn't that expensive but it became a clothing rack too
Well at least you use it for a clothes rack. Nice and original.
🙋🏻🤷🏻♀️
I am hearing you, sister! Mine currently is being used to dry my swimming towel (I swam yesterday) so at least that's a step in an exercise-related direction! 😂
Hahaha
It’s 2019 and I’m still using my IPhone 6s and it works perfectly fine ever since it released I bought it like around 6/7 years ago .
My worst regretful purchase was makeup
I used to have a huge big amount of makeup like 50+ blushes / 100+ eyeshadow palettes and all are almost high end
I came across this obsession when I started to watch minimalist videos and learning the minimalist lifestyle or Konmari method of decluttering
I sold some of them and some gave away and some had to be thrown out cuz they are mostly expired
I spend less time doing my makeup 5-10 mins every day now
I think that’s my worst regretful purchase ever cuz beauty community and beauty advertisement are really really dangerous.
And also cosplay wigs
I don’t go to any cosplay events cuz I live in small town ( countryside ) and plus I only can do cosplay on social websites which is not well I’d like to say not worth it for me I don’t have those much time to styling and making costumes . I used to have 20+ wigs now I only have 4 cuz they are my fav characters :’)
For me I’ve learnt that makeup does expired
Having minimal makeup collection ( I only have 12 items ) does help me to do many productive things and I don’t follow the trends or any RUclips beauty videos .
Skincare also for me as 21 yrs teenage girl
I don’t use serum :D I used to have different types of facial skincare omg you can’t imagine having like 2 big cabinets filled with skincare and all are high end skincare
Now I come to think and I did give away most of them
I only use moisturizer/ facial foam / Essence and sunscreen
That’s all we need , ain’t we ?
Yes now I’m using all cruelty free products :D
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences, loved reading your comment! I also think minimal skincare and make-up is great, unless you have certain specific needs I think it's all we need :)
It's 2020 and I still own an iPhone 4 that was passed down from a friend. It is a little slow when I'm trying to use the internet, but it texts and calls just fine
I regret buying expensive clothes I never wore. I also regret buying “limited edition” items. I completely agree with you about music festivals. I mostly went to hang out with close friends.
You are being very honest to your viewers! Thank you! Enjoy watching this video.
Thanks so much :)
Lots of love from Northern California! xoxo
Thank you so much Amber! :) I loved reading your comment and I'm so glad you enjoyed the learnings part from this video. I hear you about H&M haha
Yes we could give our younger selves some advice haha :) But lessons learned are also valuable :) Have a great week!
I have the same boots I got in 2016. They have lasted me 3 years in Afghanistan and one year in Seattle, with constant use. Comfort and protection
Sounds like a good investment :)
Thank you Simply Happy Zen!!! This was great 👍! I also feel the same way about music 🎵 festivals !!
Thanks for sharing Danielle, enjoy your weekend! :)
"Why am i here " the same question pops up in my head... whenever ... i am out with people socializing.
😂
Yes and there are so many cool things there.. hope you had a good time!
For souvenir, I like to buy food/sweets/seasonings that are typical in that culture or country. It is enjoyable, won't take up space but you brought something back. It was a great video, thank you for sharing!
Yes that's a great suggestion! :) I love to get different teas that are typical there, and then drink them at home
@@SimpleHappyZen Tea! I have never thought of that. Thank you for the tip! :)
Loved reading your comment, thanks for sharing!
I love that idea :D
I love this video concept! I regret buying a lot of things: makeup, notebooks I don't need, books I didn't end up liking, and things for my horse that didn't end up working for him.
Funnily, I also regret spending money on gifts. Ever since I've gotten into minimalism, I've gotten wary of buying something for someone that they might not use or even like.
Haha yes I have that too :D
Enjoyed your video. I used to buy STORAGE CONTAINERS for the crap I thought I needed. But I’ve learned and now I have narrowed my dishes to 2 of everything. Stainless steel straws and tumblers to reduce plastic use I have NO trinkets or collectibles other than my use of candles I make. I’m still working on my clothing and want to capsule my wardrobe and shoes. It’s been a journey but I’m happier and feel free of THINGS. Thank you so much for sharing. 💚
Sounds good, thanks for sharing and good luck on your journey! :)
Ah you too! :D Yes handbags I've also bought a few of them that were too expensive...
Never been this early! You’re my favorite minimalist RUclipsr. Thank you for this, Vera!
Wow thank you so much Tricia, that's awesome :) And we share the same name! :D
Same here🍃
How true Simple Happy Zen. Nice to see a sooooo realistically down to earth , beautiful and brilliant young person. Good for you and thanks to share.
Wow thank you so much for your kind comment :)
I appreciate your videos; they usually give me a new perspective on "things ". ❤🙌❤🙌
I'm so glad to hear it! :D Thanks Kailinn
Same here🍃❤️
I didn’t realise you were in the Netherlands! I ❤️ the Netherlands! I lived here for 10 months when I was 18/19 x
Oof yes dry cleaning is so expensive.... 😮
I regret shopping clothes online..they often didnt fit well and I had to pay for sending back..
Sounds great and if it works for all of you, that's a wonderful arrangement! :D Thanks for sharing Ngoni, enjoy your day!
@@SimpleHappyZen you too Vera!
So relatable! I also bought a lot of flashy cheap clothes to look stylish, but most of them I don't wear now.
Thanks Dorothy! :)
As someone who always bought the older model of pjone, i find they break faster/slow down much faster to the point where you may have to replace them sooner
Agreed
Agree with almost all of your points, especially as regards to the shoes and glassware
Thanks Shailja! :)
I bought self Tanner that was expensive,a whole set...and it made me orange.
Ah yes I used to try self tanner too.. big mistake :D
Good examples! :)
Nice video Vera, it's true, we sometimes purchase certain items that r not really necessary. That way we waste our money and also add to clutter
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video :)
I’ve been on a journey to find more low waste and eco friendly products. I’ve found some gems I’ll stick with, but also a lot of products that simply don’t do the job. I don’t have money to waste.
Nice to see the pictures of you in Iceland. Best regards from Reykjavík, Iceland :)
Wow, I absolutely loved it there!! 😍💗💖
Jeans! Lol I always buy jeans because they are cute or fit an ideal of what I want to dress like but I never wear jeans, they are always uncomfortable and I regret wearing them within minutes of leaving the house...I love how they look but they dont work for me
Ah yes I wear jeans regularly but.... they are quite uncomfortable... 😮 I like to wear dresses too because of that
@@SimpleHappyZen yes dresses in the summer and leggings the rest of the year lol
Ur thoughts are so much like mine .. glad to see there is someone else like me.. I did the same things and learnt the same lessons
🤗
I'm so glad and happy because I found your channel!
I'm happy you're here too! :)
Yes one important thing to look for is how long the phone will still get software updates
I have bought a lot of craft supplies, painting supplies, jewelry making supplies, books that I couldn't get into etc. Keeping those things around has just made me feel worse every time I see them. I am in the process of donating some of these items.
I can relate to that feeling.. good luck with donating them! 🤗✌🌷
I used to buy lot of junk jwelleries souviniers sauces condiments which i hardly finished before their expiry dates. Now i dont do it i shop very mindfuly
Yay to shopping mindfully! :)
What I regret buying was expensive skin care products that doesn’t really work for me and unnecessary furnitures. That made me realized that I don’t want to spend my money on things that I don’t really need and become a minimalist.
Well my regret was a blouse and a pair of boots. Thanks for a great video Vera. Always look forward to your videos.💜
Thank you as always and enjoy your weekend! :)
I like that you actually pick a phone based on specs for your needs.
@@Starry_Night_Sky7455 Thank you :)
Agree about the souvenirs.
I only buy washable clothing.
Yes washable clothing is so much better haha
I regret buying a large shelf because a couple weeks later I was becoming a minimalist. That shelf is gone. My friends that helped me put the shelf together I gave it to them.
I regret re mortgaging twice when hubby and I were younger and it was our first house. Don’t do it. Just save up if you want or need something x
I used to buy lots of make up products... omg, like 10 different blushes. I only have two cheeks 😂 and this list can go on and on 😂 now I owe only things I need and actually fit me
Hahaha yes I can relate :) Thanks for sharing!
Music festivals are super fun
Vera you are naturally gorgeous as
you are. Enjoyed this video and
points covered. We all make
mistakes buying things we think
we need but do not. Now I only
buy what I need and good quality.
Thank you so much Hazel, that's very sweet of you :)
i only buy consumables as souvenirs! seems like people appreciate something more when it doesnt last forever
That's a great idea :)
Lief jou Suster. I hate crowds as well. Baie liefde en goeie wense!
Dankjewel Anneke, groetjes!! :D
Works great for me
And now it is trendy to be minimalist, zero waste and mindful
