I just finished minimalizing my home--kitchen, closet, dresser, every single room. Unable to go anywhere for two weeks (here in Ecuador all roads were blocked because of political unrest), I found life not to be boring at all. I loved being home. In the zen-like simplicity, everything was enhanced--reading, cooking, music, doing Yoga. Clarity. Peace. Appreciation. Joy. Thank you.

Since I've started going through my house decluttering, I've experienced a noticeable drop in my stress level. I walk into my kitchen or my family room now and I feel so much lighter now that I can see there's not stuff everywhere. Being able to open a kitchen cabinet and immediately find what I want is so amazing. The more open feeling is wonderful. And I've found myself more motivated to keep things organized and clean. I actually WANT to clean and tidy up now, and keep my house looking neat and simple.
Also, I'm a worrier, too. I'm trying to get better about it and decluttering/minimalism is helping. Decluttering my mind is a lot harder for me than decluttering a room, though!

Great video. I became a minimalist over a year and a half ago. I was a disaster prior to that. I was buying things I did not need with money I did not have to fill that hole of emptiness. I gradually changed that. I now only buy what I need rather than what I want and to my surprise I had so many things I did not need. I do not buy unless I pay for it cash. I do not charge things unless I pay the full balance at the end of the billing cycle. It is amazing on how much weight is lifted off of me. I still have some purging, but I am finding life much more enjoyable without the worry of owing for things I do not even use. My philosophy is if I have not used in in 6 months , I sell it or donate it. Simple. I keep my emotions out of the process of purchasing or keeping things.

I don’t think minimalist living is boring. At the end what we treasure is the memories and experiences we have had with the people and animals we love or the places we love. What you said about “feeling responsible for things” that you own really resonated with me. When you own things, you have to take care of them and store them, and if you aren’t using them, ultimately have to expend mental energy to decide how to donate, sell, or discard them. As a former shopaholic I have spent a lot of time now going through my possessions and seeing what “sparks joy” and what I actually need- I also moved into a place with less storage space, so that was a big motivator for me to downsize. Ultimately I’d like to change my job to do something where I have more time and energy to be creative, even if I make less money. Thanks for making these videos and helping me to look at life in a different way.

I don’t think having less things in life is boring. In fact, it can be quite overwhelming to have more than what we can care for, as we tend to waste both our time and energy in taking care of many things in our life. Instead, it’s better to have few select things which add value to our life, as you always point out in your videos. Great video, by the way. 👌🏻

I used to feel like I was suffocating all the time, long story short, I even get rid of my bed and just kept the mattress, I adopted the Japanese lifestyle in that sense. Now I can workout and do more creative things in my room during the day and at night I just have to pull out the mattress to sleep.
Besides that my family have seen the benefits of decluttering and they're starting now. My dad is thrilled to see the yard and the garage with mostly only plants, you can tell the difference, the air even flows different. My mom is planning to get rid of the excess of clothes. Minimalism truly changed our lifes for the best.

Hi! I've just discovered your channel, watched some videos and I already feel so inspired. I'm normally a very disorganized person, but ambitious at the same time :)) and starting this year I am decided to include minimalism in my life and change my lifestyle. For 20 days now I've been eating healthy with just some really tiny guilty pleasures (90% of the time based on healthy food - it's a real progress for me) and I also have maintained my room clean almost every day. I'll keep going to progressively introduce good habits in my lifestyle.

There is something about it that helps return your focus from material to spiritual. And it is also visually relaxing. My work day goes at a frantic pace and I’m always fighting my way out from under missed deadlines, new work, stress. Coming home to visual peace helps me calm down.

I've started on a minimalism journey early this year. But i must say it is pretty tough when you are not living alone. Things do not "leave" but "stay". However it is also a challenge for me to declutter in this journey. Sentiments for stuff is very much the blocker. For a start, i try to put in place a rule of "things must be thrown away b4 anything new comes into the house". I do believe that life is not boring with minimalism but it is how you are living the life that you want.

It all started with a no buy year, then I found minimalism. And the transition itself has been really open minded for me. It´s incredible how our stuff can blind us from the "things" that really matters such as family, nature and our innerself. Definitely having fewer things has rewarded me in a way that stuff couldn´t.

I‘m still at a stage where I sometimes think about shopping just for the sake of having something new - it’s a habit that I’ll have to change, I guess. But not being weighed down by stuff I don’t really use and have to „manage“ is more important. And you’re so right, it doesn’t have to be this cure-all, extreme lifestyle. It’s very individual and whatever you want to make it!
I am so not bored, I do things that cost little to no money and it’s a real boost for my creativity, whether to use up things in my kitchen or find ways of entertainment that don’t revolve around buying something or expensive events.

May I add to this? I like museums, and shopping is like walking through a (modern cultural history) museum. With a museum minds eye, I see what our consumerist society values, keep up on what is on trend, so I am still involved and can understand those around me are experiencing. I also notice how I get drawn in to the impulse to buy..but as I learn more, i understand how minimalist life has made me a free person, instead of spending my life as a credit card slave. Hugs.

Great Video! You really motivate me not to give in. I am not that far in getting rid of things, but I really have a vision. And mostly there are so much things I want to do or learn, that I have to let go. You are so overwhelmed by these that you are bored, because you cannot decide what NOT to do. I think minimalism leads to less boredom and more intentional living. I hope I will get to this stage soon.

I started my journey as a minimalist 10 years ago, and I have been always felt like I am an outsider whenever I hang out with my friends or my family. Most of them are maximalist, and they really care about their status quo. They buy luxury stuff, a lot. Most of the conversations are about bags, high heels, clothes, etc. I don't know if they judge me as a weirdo behind my back, but I feel that I am against the consumer society. Just a dilemma!

I'm not really a minimalist, but "small talk" about clothes and such are so boring! I much prefer, deep, intellectual conversation. Sure, small talk is necessary sometimes, but if that's all my friends talked about...we probably couldn't hang out lol. Maybe try changing the conversation into a topic that is deeper than superficial (I know your comment is 6 months old now, but just a thought if you're still having this dilemma).

No, I think minimalist living means you have more time to enjoy your life. Believe me I grew up in a house where there was alot of "stuff" stored away and never used. When cleaning out my parent's home, I got rid of tons of stuff and tons of photos. My mother bought stuff and my father took photos by the ton. I didn't take much of anything, but some photos and a small thing here or there. I was traveling across the US from California to NJ and back. Just couldn't haul back alot because it was expensive and I had no room anyway.

I am into it since 2017 and I feel some practical differences, but not the mental ones yet. I need just a few hours for cleaning everything instead of three days. But it still looks messy most of the time and I am still not where I want to be. It is also because my life changed a lot in these years (giving birth to a wonderful son). Concentrate on the things you’re already „there“, this is my advice. For me this is my wardrobe. And our office became a wonderful, open space for my little one (therefore the other rooms feel more cluttered again although we sold most video games and CDs and a lot of furniture like one desk, five shelves and a big office container). I am not the big declutterer, getting rid of everything at once, because I also feel very responsible for my stuff, but important is not to let new things in. Then you simply reduce naturally by gifting, wearing down, breaking cups... So you get to new stages every few month. And sometimes there will be the urge to reduce further (got rid of most of my Mangas just last month by selling them). this slow process is frustrating, I know. But some people simply are not that quick as most of the RUclips minimalists. I feel I am just before the next step. We will probably move to a smaller space next year and I feel like letting go a lot of stuff until then.

Hi Vera, I never commented here before although I subscribed to your channel a while ago. To me a life with less things is not boring, but it can be poor. I'll explain this better: I am not a minimalist like you or other youtubers I follow, but I like to get rid of stuff that doesn't bring me joy or that I do not value anymore. I also praise a mindful shopping and do not spend my money on impulse buying anymore, BUT I would never get rid of old photo albums, dolls, cute little things that are of sentimental value to me, because I want and love to be surrounded by objects that represent me, my life, my taste, my sense of coziness and warmth. I find homes without posters or pictures on the walls very sad, also I find sad neutral colours everywhere, even in the wardrobe. Why do minimalists fear colours in their lives? I don't get it, seriously. Everything in my house is colourful, made of natural fabrics and materials but still vibrant with colours and patterns and that's the way I love it. I have to say that I've never been a compulsive hoarder or anything like that, and I got rid of loads of things in the last few years but again, minimalism is not really my piece of cake, although I enjoy ideas on how to become more essential. Ciao from Italy!

    • @SimpleHappyZen
      @SimpleHappyZen  5 лет назад +2

Hey there Prizzy! :) Thanks for commenting! Yes I feel minimalism can also be colorful, it depends on the person and their personality. I think a lot of minimalists are probably attracted to that calm vibe, maybe because we prefer order? I personally am very sensitive to stimuli, so I prefer to have my home calm, with natural materials and a lot of plants, not much color besides that, because it helps me to relax and unwind after being in a hectic environment. But everyone should do what works for them, and if you want lots of color, then definitely do it! :D

Hi Vera I definitely don’t think minimalism is in anyway boring? Having less stuff frees our mind and soul to spend more time being instead of doing ?
And that allows us the time and clarity to see what is most important to us ! It is always best to de clutter gradually over time as I too am a bit of a worrier but find if I try to take a bit more time with everything I do it feels more achievable? You have a lovely home and thank you for everything in this video you help me to keep on track with my downsizing project ❤️

I think minimalism is not boring at all. I think is healthy to let go of some of our stuff so we become more humble and appreciate the things we have. Hi from Pakistan. I notice you surround yourself with lots of plants. Please make a video on how to keep and maintain indoor plants. Everyone talks about them but hardly anyone shares how they are maintaining them in their rooms on daily basis. I bought some indoor plants like aloe vera, snake and money plant too but I struggled with keeping their leaves dust free and since I worried about how much sunlight they would require or bug infestations, they ended up on my staircase.

Hey there! Thanks for your suggestion :) I actually don't do anything special with my plants, I just give them water once a week and dust them off occassionally. Because of that, I haven't made a video about it yet. But with plants, an important thing is their location. If a plant isn't thriving, try placing it somewhere else. For me, that has almost always done the trick so far :)

There will come a time for us to move into a smaller home, so I have decided now is the time to adapt to the minimized living style. The second reason that I want to own less is when I do depart from this life, I would hate to leave so much stuff for my children to have to sort through as I would rather leave them a collection of family photographs and a few sentimental items from me.

They look around and see that I like rocks and antiques (not alot but some) Plus I don't really have the expensive to fix some things in my house. Get my floors redone and have a wall in my basement that needs a bit of fixing, Lol. I do wish my adult children could rid their life of some stuff but I don't push it. I like to sort things out in category first then give it to people who can use it. Tools are great for younger boys and girls. I have taken cloths and shoes to laundry mats so people don't have to buy them they can just have them. It makes me feel good too I have to admit.

I worry a lot, too, especially since I've had experiences of poverty and that long-term-lasting stress that it creates to always wonder how to pay your next meal or rent. And the worst part is: you learn that nobody in the world helps you, when you are poor. people are actually happy to see you fall, and when you are down, they like to hit you and insult you further, in order to enjoy your suffering. Human beings are really the worst thing that can happen to you, when you are poor. You end up all alone and then, when life gets better (like you get a job, and can pay bills better) then you know that you can lose all of it in an instant. Also it makes life less pleasurable, when you learn that nothing is forever. When life gives you something, you can't really enjoy it because you know "Life is going to take this away from me again some time". The poverty experience really changed me from an optimist to a realist.

It was my initial fear with minimalism but I think that owning fewer possessions would actually be less boring because I would enjoy and use those possessions that I still owned more. I have a whole room full of art supplies, but I haven’t painted in a year. With one tray of watercolours and one set of pencils, one rubber and sharpener and a pad of paper - how much simpler would it be? Less choices would reduce the overwhelming number of decisions that I need to make each day.
