Yeah, as a kid growing up in the 70’s & 80’s, I always liked BMW. I started losing interest around 2010, when they started getting too heavy & filled with electronics. Now it seems like they don’t really resemble BMWs anymore.
I’m glad to see how much you both appreciate this car! I still own an E30 316 from 1985, the weakest motor available at the time but still great fun to drive!
I've had a Wagon, an SUV, a cross-over and others.... But you know, in terms of practicality, utility, etc, I'll never understand why wagons aren't more common. And this is one of the shining examples why I like Wagons.
06:47 "Light metallic blue, like your shirt".... Zing! Jay's great. He can certainly dish out the little quips but he's not above accepting when someone else nails him with one himself. Love the great "You got me" look on his face! Donald Osborne occasionally gets one over on him too. Jay's a good sport.
The BMW in the older years 60s to the 80s had a really nice engine compartment and the hood. But that little 6 is a great little engine and it looks good. I have never had one and am not well versed on them at all but I know a great engine sound when I hear it.
In my uneducated opinion, the E30 was one of the top 10 car designs in history, at least re. 'regular' cars. And the only thing better looking than an E30 sedan - an E30 wagon. ;)
For real, I'll never understand people, especially in Europe, opting for these ridiculous sized SUV oxcarts when they could have a sleek, more practical and more nimble wagon *and* have the same if not more room for stuff in the back. Especially those German sports wagons that go really quick if you need them to. But alas, SUV killed the Station Wagon...
I live in the UK and l've not seen a 325 touring for a very long time 318 and 320 l see occasionally . Still a good looking car. I'd guarantee that if Jason drove a TR6 CP with Lucas fuel injection he'd love it ...❤❤
As a long term E30 owner, this episode gives me joy. BMW should have brought these to North America... E30 design has the "look" that always make me look back at it.🙂
Air Conditioning was really rare in Europe and the UK in the 80's, it's not so needed in their climate which rarely get's above 30℃ and if it does it's only for a couple of weeks a year! A Heater is more essential!
Things changed though, like the climate south of the North Sea. More heat, mild winters without snow. I dont even recall the exact year of the last white Christmas here in Switzerland right on the border to Germany. I remember those in the 80's and into mid '90 when I was a young kid. You absolutely dont want a car without AC in summer around here nowadays in most years...
@@LillyRocket I think we are just used to having AC now, what you didn't have a bad Winter in 2010? It snowed for 4 months solid in the UK, late November to March!
That pic almost hurts. I had a 1990 320i in the same rare mineral blue, sedan but just like that, gorgeous condition til someone undertook me turning into my drive and destroyed the side of it. The sound of that M20 is just godly, & so smooth.
I have a 320i Touring sitting in a barn. Was my daily, and has some issues but I miss it. Head has a crack and something in the drive line isnt right. I'll get it back on the road. Seeing Randy Probst drive this Touring previously was a blast, he flogged it hard. 325i are so much more special than the 320i.
@@glurak888 I think theyre both pretty special, the M20B20 loves to rev and is just that bit smoother - but its that survivor mineral blau thats really special.
@@mgsx1506 I loved the thing, ~7.5/100km on Michelin eco tyres worked for me. As an engineering tech the novelty of such a tiny 6 also really works for me, such an amusing thing to exist. But im glad you have the things you like :)
I had a 1990 325i manual gearbox Malachite Green Touring with black sports interior. Brilliant car and I sold it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Bonhams auction in 2007. That says how nice it was despite having over 200k miles on the clock. It’s in the auction catalogue.
I drove a 1991 316i Wagen, in Europe my moons ago. The 3 series wagen, should have been available here in the states. BMW missed out on that opportunity.
BMW also made a 325ix (4wd) in sedan and touring. Especially popular in countries like Switzerland. My uncle had one. Great car, sounded fantastic, although quite slow by modern standards.
If memory serves, a fellow producer of TV commercials who worked on the BMW/USA account ca. 2012 bought one of these after a shoot. Unrelated is this plea to my contemporaries: give hyperbole like "awesome" and "iconic" a rest. You've made the words threadbare. There are more appropriate words available 😉
Great looking wagon, especially with a straight six! Bought a Mazda RX-4 wagon in the 70's; great little car, especially hauling things or on long drives. Ended up using it as a trade-in on a '77 T-Bird. What a boat the Bird was; should have kept the RX-4!
It has to be strick here in Germany because of the Autobahn. Driving on some parts of the Autobahn without speed limit, the cars have to be in a good condition. Big checkup every 2 years as well.
Lovely car, I have 2 of them, IS with Half Million Km and an Eta, original engine, M20 engines go for ever if change oil and coolant, brilliant engines.
The E30 Series appeared first 1983 with 4 engines, 2 of them inline-4 and 2 inline-6 : 316 carburetor 90 bhp, 318 i injection 105 bhp, 320 i , injection 125 bhp and 323i injection 139 bhp… 1984 apeared 4 door saloon. Early 1985 The 323i evolved to 150 bhp. 1986 convertible. 1988 Station Wagon or touring wagon.. produced until 1993..
Suggestion for Jason's American car. Check out the cosworth Vega! It sounds perfect, it's little, high revving, decently tunable, and completely bizzare
Why is it a unicorn? I've seen tons of those, took a peek and there are 3 of them for sale right now where I am. One is identical, just minus sunroof but same color and wheels as this. The other two are black, one with identical wheels, the other has the bigger wheels with the same look. So the bigger 'BBS look' ones. But I am in Europe, NL not the US.
i had one of theese back in 2012 same colour and everything , it also had AC and recaro interiour was a nice car to have i was 22 when i got it for 1500€ here in Finland, sold it and the new owner painted it and engine swap m50 turbo
Bought a 1990 example from an auction outside Tokyo back in 2003 and paid $1500, it was white and in a very good shape, and learned to drive in it. It was automatic 325i. I ruined it in Iraq, bad roads, bad fuel, and an accident, and sold it after 18 months.
Leno and Cammisa togethe!! Never clicked so fast!!
Could listen to these 2 guys for hours.

@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 you're not wrong
So much car and so little else
@preppen78 exactly. The same went for the fast Fords of the time. Just the five and nothing else. Chassis, engine, gearbox, steering, breaks.

Finally the M20 gets featured on the show. Great engine, great car and great people. Thanks Jay and Jason.
Had an E30 in West Germany in 87, that color. Awesome and fun machine.
Here in the UK in the ‘70s, we would spray the underneath of the car with ‘Waxoyl’ in a vain attempt to prevent rust.

SUV's seem "tougher".
I learned to drive in a 1987 BMW 325i. It was my brothers. I now have a 99 BMW M3 convertible, love it.
Finally some BMW love on jays garage. ❤

You just keep getting better. Can’t wait for the next drop!
Wagons (estate cars) ftw!
I drove a 325iX Touring for a while - with rear-biased permanent all-wheel drive. On snow, it was the most fun car I’ve ever driven.
I still dream about throwing my old iX around in the snow. That thing just felt magical.

So much more aero./less dispacement.

SUVs killed cars across the board except (toys), sport and muscle cars.

That rear end looks almost identical to my old 1980 Toyota Corolla.
2011 e91 Touring is the last NA inline six touring that came with a manual 6 speed. Came in AWD and RWD.

Very cool.
E30 is still awesome with a turbo. Modern BMW biggest issue has been the lack of steering feel and feedback since 2011
Ugh - that is a well-sorted e30 !! Nice !!
You can modify a car and have it tuv aproved , paperwork and inspections galore .
Yea, the urban legend that you cant mod street legal cars in Germany - of course you can if you can stomach the bureaucracy and time investment.
