I have a 2018 335D which whilst doesn't keep up with 335i's and 340i's, is still rapid enough and can get me to London and back (from Bournemouth) twice before I need to refill the tank. I think they've always managed to make a bog BMW into something very attractive. Even from the 80's their wheels and body kits and internal styling just made a BMW so appealing; but when they started stripping and rebuilding the car from scratch and fine-tuning them, what came out was an engineering masterpiece everytime. Unfortunately they failed to identify a lot of BMW's design faults. From 2023/24 Alpina will be the only place people will be able to buy a Diesel BiTurbo BMW. The amazing thing is, Alpina announced last year it is bring back partd production for all of its classic models ranging back to the 80's. I love all of you search for the bloody MPG figures and when you started swapping cars to trash on the others seating positions i complete lost it. Such a great fun drag race i hope we get more of this :D
Personally, I prefer the pre-LCI look of the M340d over all the others. KITT Tuning is offering a M8 style bumper for the pre-LCI G20 and it looks sick.
Damn I didn't even know they made an M8 bumper for G20. Personally I don't like the notch in the headlight of the PRE LCI so I prefer LCI but I dont like how they removed the side vents on the LCI which made it look a lot less aggressive. Hopefully someone out there makes a nice bumper for the LCI and brings back the vents
Alpina B3 is just beautiful. I feel the M3 Touring is a great car, but its one of those cars that look better when you add and tune things. Especially when you put the aftermarket front bumper. That makes it look night and day better.
As a pre-LCI M340d Touring owner, this just cements why I love it so much as it literally can do everything. To enjoy this negligible difference in performance (most noticeable here but hardly anything in day to day driving) - but with that also can't get worse than 35mpg when driving it like it's stolen, and best I've had is 740 miles out of tank and 72mpg over a 100 mile journey. The BMW B57 is an engineering masterclass.
I agree. It's all well and good watching the gap grow on a runway, realistically on UK roads a 340d will reach and exceed the speed limit out of any corner/roundabout/sliproad in a matter of seconds. I enjoy accelerating hard in those situations but do like to keep it "at or near" the speed limit so I don't lose my license. To have that performance whilst still getting 45mpg instead of 20 odd is the best of all worlds
Just back from a 2000 mile trip to Europe in mine and averaged 46mpg including 1000 miles in Germany where my average speed was 115mph and 38.7mpg. Backed out of it at 163mph indicated (traffic) No doubt the 40i is a faster car but for 95% of my driving I’ll take the 40d

I'm sure the 340d has a small turbo for low down and a large for higher up the rev range like the 35d before it. That twinpower label under the bonnet doesn't help and is on me 435d when it should have twin turbo as it has 2.
@lukeskywalker1666 has nothing to do with what I am talking about. It's decent on fuel for a 3.0l and in the real world people with the extra power can't even drive anyway. Its a crusing about car and all these at over 1800kg are boats anyway so hardly nimble b road blasters. Plus the petrol ones on here sound shit compared to an om606 merc diesel. And if we are gonna talk about fun. I have a 750kg lightweight 70s rwd opel which let's be honest will be more fun than any of these for a b road blast and can stay in my lane and nip past wide cars without slowing due to the width of some roads in the uk.
As an owner of an s58 and b58, you’re right. Twin turbos kill the sound as does the unequal length exhaust. But the s58 is a flash tune and e50 away from 800 horsepower. A b58 will need way more mods including an aftermarket turbo.
Summary: The results were exactly as expected and were also very impressive all round. For driving on UK roads any one of these is an almost perfect all-rounder.
The Alpina is actually the best looking for me. Props to the M3, what it lacks in looks, it makes up for performing like a Japanese😅.... i mean perfectly aftermarket built track car. I would still daily that diesel.
I'd take the M340i any day, the comfiest, smoothest, and quietest in the cabin (along with the M340D) more than quick enough, and with the B58 there's enough headroom to run 500WHP from a good Stage 1
@@sexyhunk84 Yep, also I forgot to add the power band of the B58 is far superior to the S58, with peak torque coming in at about 1600rpm up to 5000rpm, whereas the S58 has to be around 2800rpm for max power to kick in, meaning in the real world when you're cruising in 5th/6th gear and you go to 75% throttle for an overtake, it's instant power, whereas the S58 in the same situation would have to kick down to 3rd/4th gear, causing a delay, and using more fuel.
@@Shaggy12321 That's impressive. I feel that when I cruise my X3 M 40i. It has the same B58 engine as you get in 340i. I love driving my BMW. Simply anyday better than their counterpart in Merc and Audi.
That’s a really great gathering. We need more Alpinas on Carwow, as long as they still exist. BMW owns now Alpina and it’s not clear which direction they go. More luxury or more hybrid/electric power or both. No more B7 and a B5 is unclear. 11.3s for the M3 Touring is really fast. A few years back the F90 M5 got in the best case 11.1s, when the terrible launch control finally worked (and sometimes 12s when not). A rumored CS version could be a lot of fun.
Great drag race as always 👍! But: Driving my 2016 F10 with favorite buttons, iDrive, no touch, NavProf - still makes me feel not to miss anything from infotainment point of view - compared to the curved display touch era nowadays 😁
Taking into account the fact that the alpina has more torque than the M3, it would have been interesting to see a race from 40mph in 6th gear or something like that. Wonder if the Alpina would have won that. Would you do such races in the future Mat😅? in situations like this
M340d are a twin turbo indeed. It is a duble twin scroll turbo config. 330d 286hp are similar, twin turbo as well, but a twin scroll and a single scroll turbo config.

I'm sure the 340d has a small turbo for low down and a large for higher up the rev range like the 35d before it. That twinpower label under the bonnet doesn't help and is on me 435d when it should have twin turbo as it has 2.
It’s a diesel, absolute garbage cars
Diesel are slow garbage tractors snail for peasants
Mat Watson offers the best aspects in every car he shows us 🙏
Seems like he always has best aspect in every single best car.
Man that 340d is such a beautiful spec! Ultimate daily
A Top Gear style Roadtrip video would be excellent with you four. Maybe you guys could try something like that. 👍🏽
I really think the B58 sounds better than the S58.
It certainly does
Definitely. N55 sounded better than S55 too. BMW'S twin turbo sixes don't sound that great. N55 and B58 sound nice though
Well for one Active Autowerke does offer a mid pipe/uel option to make these sound more natural and single turbo like
До 2019 года звук был лучше у b58!
As an owner of an s58 and b58, you’re right. Twin turbos kill the sound as does the unequal length exhaust. But the s58 is a flash tune and e50 away from 800 horsepower. A b58 will need way more mods including an aftermarket turbo.
I have a G20 pre lci 330i. Love this car. Yea, 340i would be better, but its too expensive for me and 330i is also nice 😊
The alpina with m3 headlights would look amazing
it's the most sunday afternoon dad's reunion drag race i ever seen XD, so funny
I still choose the Alpina ! What a car 😍
Now let's tune that 40d and 40i for a rematch !!
40 d would win
40d would still lose
give both a tune, the diesel would still lose. it has like 200nm more but still cant keep up because torque matters on a tractor not in a car
@@99Lezard99 Torque absolutely matters on a car. That's what you drive them with. Drag racing might be out of that realm though.
It would be good on steeper road😅@@99Lezard99
Day to day the M340D is the best lets be honest
For me, one of the best drag races in recent times 🤙
0:49 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Made my day!
The seating position review was the best part of this. I’d love more of that in the videos with so many cars.
That 340D is a weapon, miles better mileage, near as much performance. Not much downaides with it
Unfortunatelly particulate filter DPF which in city starts to cause problems after 1-2 years
The 340d is the winner for me, good looks and, decent mpg
And slow.
@@TrueFilter for city commute u don't need 500+ hp mate...
@@lordflint6964 better with a 320d or i then.
I gotta say it. The diesel looks the best.
With a lowering kit, darker wheels, I think you’d have an absolute menace of a ride.
Small detail, the pre-LCI still has leather at the hornplate. But I‘d say the Alpina looks the best 😀
I'll take an Alpina B3 in Alpina Green over tan, silver wheels, no tints. Perfect daily.
The zoom in on the hand slap at around 5mins absolutely slayed me for some reason. Props to the editor.
Just look at that gorgeous alpina. That's what the M3 should have looked like from the beginning
Rory, Nick and Sam are so great together! I hope we get to see them all together in future races!
The Alpina clearly looks the best though
Summary: The results were exactly as expected and were also very impressive all round. For driving on UK roads any one of these is an almost perfect all-rounder.
For me I just love a very thing about Alpina.
Definitely going to look at this as an option come trade in time. 👍🏼
The Alpina is actually the best looking for me. Props to the M3, what it lacks in looks, it makes up for performing like a Japanese😅.... i mean perfectly aftermarket built track car. I would still daily that diesel.
Like a Japanese?
@@6942O-n6n a JDM car ma guy. Pump the brakes there. 😂
I'd take the M340i any day, the comfiest, smoothest, and quietest in the cabin (along with the M340D) more than quick enough, and with the B58 there's enough headroom to run 500WHP from a good Stage 1
You can also run it in Eco mode. Don't think the M3 does that. It'll coast with the engine off and you can hit mid 40's MPG easily on a run.
B58 are the best engine. Enough power to drive in city and motorways/freeways. M3 is quickest but not a day to day practical car.
@@biddyboy1570M3 has eco modus, watched a m3 review 👍🏻
That Alpina is so good looking 😍👌🏿
That’s a really great gathering. We need more Alpinas on Carwow, as long as they still exist. BMW owns now Alpina and it’s not clear which direction they go. More luxury or more hybrid/electric power or both. No more B7 and a B5 is unclear.
11.3s for the M3 Touring is really fast. A few years back the F90 M5 got in the best case 11.1s, when the terrible launch control finally worked (and sometimes 12s when not). A rumored CS version could be a lot of fun.
top tier level video today guys 😂 loving the banter 👏🏻
I would love to see 535d vs m550d vs 540i vs 550i! Previous gen then ofcourse
That’s stupid ofc the 40i and 50i would beat these diesels
@lukeskywalker1666 a 40i isnt faster than an m550d period.
@@hexagonosaurus5848 power to weight ratio 140i has same amount of bhp stock and weights 400kilos less, you have no clue about cars
Would you do such races in the future Mat😅? in situations like this
The M3 Touring always launched directly to 6th gear.
I was referring to a race where the cars would be locked in 6th gear in manual mode@@purwantiallan5089
M340d are a twin turbo indeed. It is a duble twin scroll turbo config. 330d 286hp are similar, twin turbo as well, but a twin scroll and a single scroll turbo config.
Actually I prefer a hand built British race car
You get peace of mind not by thinking about it or imagining it, but by quietening and relaxing the restless mind.
Every time Sam gets a good start he gives an evil laugh 😂
I am driving the m340d as my daily for arround a year now. This car is just perfect! If you want to, you can go at 5,5 L / 100km- or full throttle fun machine. The spread is incredible. 👍
Id like to see the same again with the m340i and m340d both at stage 1
2:58 the M340d got a Bi-Turbo Engine (1 small 1 big) not twinscroll or twinpower. its a Bi-Turbo.
Always nice to have the whole fam-bam for a vid!
The 340d is absolute lunatic and feel special being least expensive . but M3 is the devil.
We live times when a 3 series beemer weights nearly 2 tons and costs at least 60 grand. Unbelievable...
Inflation is real. In 10 years time, the only brand new cars under 100 Grand will be Chinese cars.
Nick deserves to drive in every carwow video..he really does entertain us
This was a really fun episode, especially with all those extra bits that are not normally in other "normal" drag race episodes. I quite liked it. I'm sure many other viewers did too.
3:42 Actually that 340d sounds quite good! 👍
I wonder what the 340d would be like with a tune up
Probably would beat the regular m340i,I mean imagine the amount of torque would make a difference with a tune, but it will just run out of revs
Now this is literally the one dragrace we have all been waiting for…
A car wow video doesn't feel the same without yannie. He just brings in a whole lot of different ball game. Hope we start seeing him again.
Yianni hopefully returns in the next Carwow drag race.
Videos are always better without him. he brings nothing good
excellent video! testing the seats ... classic

M340d has two turbos, both of which are twin scroll
Correct. Or at least the one sitting in my garage does. If theirs doesn’t, they probably need to go talk to their BMW press rep, who’s sold one of them for some money for nose candy, and a lap dance or three.
Two twin-scroll turbos doesn't make sense, check your engine code. You don't need twin scrolls if you have two turbos.
@TML34 well, twin power, or shysters BMW call it. But definitely two turbos
As an indian I see 340d as an absolute win
I have an M340i with a tune. Amazing car for the money. I'm super jealous that you get the Touring. I don't even need it, but it looks so cool.
I picture this is what heaven looks like. Matt, if you would hire me, I could move to England and then drive these wonderful wagons. Let me know what day I start.
