  • I have an M5 here for a review today so why not pit it against the M4 in a quick rolling drag race. The M5 has much more power but the M4 is lighter and puts down its power better. Note both these cars are stock.

      Nick. Tell/Ask the airport where you hanger your G5 if you can do some taxi tests. Then show up with the M toys. That way we, your fans, don't have to bail you out of a Mexican jail cell. Just an idea.

      Yes but the New V8 has more displacement and two turbos, the new M3 is lighter and different distrubition of weight. It would not be that easy

    I'm sorry Nick but it's not really that close.
    The only reason the first race was close was because you had the M5 in what's basically auto so we know the drill: Foot down, computer is like oh shit we better downshift, downshift, Then Go.
    In manual if you were more careful with the gas (not at all your fault it would take time to get a costumed to it) it would leave the M4 so fast.
    Not because the M4 isn't quick.
    it's just the M5 is a monster and has always been in a different straight line league from the M3s and now the M4s.

      +Juan Galvis Driver-error is present in both cars, since they aren't pro-testers.
      Nick's point is better expressed through math, but the gist is: if you double the mass, you require 4x (yes, 4) the power to have an equal acceleration rate. This is because acceleration is a power(2) equation, *not* a linear one.
      In reality, the two cars aren't anywhere as far apart as you would think, simply from looking at the brag sheets.

      +TheJohn8765 This is false. When you double the mass you require 2x the "power" to have an equal acceleration rate. There is no power(2) in the acceleration/mass equation. It is simply
      force=mass x acceleration. Double the mass and you need to double the force to have the same acceleration, it's basic physics. Doubling the force in terms of a car would mean doubling the torque to the wheels at any rpm. Double the torque at any rpm and you have twice the power, not four times the power.

      +Nicolas Cage is God I also love the shape of a wagon a lot more than the one of a coupe.
      You know, they did have the m5 (E60/61) as a wagon, at least in Europe. The worldwide demand wasn't high enough though, so they stopped building those.
      But you can always go for an Audi RS6 Avant or Mercedes E63 AMG T-model.

    Hi Nick, at 2:11 in the M5 the revs are only at just over 3000, it's hard to believe the M5 didn't have a lower gear available. According to the BMW web site, the M5 engine has less than 50% of it's maximum power available at 3000 rpm and only reaches it's maximum power at 6000 rpm. So the outcome could have been vastly different in a lower gear. You do have the maximum torque available at 3000 rpm, but you would have had the same torque in a lower gear.

      +Nick Murray I actually missed that the first time I watched it. That's a lot of wheelspin. Were the settings different? It seems as if the traction control in the M5 is allowing way more wheelspin than the one in the M4, but it's hard to tell without actually sitting in the car. Would be interesting to see the same race with the traction control fully on. I have a feeling BMW traction controls have become way too loose lately. Same thing with the Launch control in the M3/M4, it's much more for show than for maximum performance. Haven't driven the current-gen M5, only the non-turbo predocessor. That one didn't have any traction issues whatsoever, but then again it needed really high revs to really get going.

      +EtienneTestet Yes the E60 for V10 had pretty low torque 380lbft at top of the revs so never really had any problems getting the power down. The current M5 nearing double that torque about 630lbft and unlike the V10 that torque is coming in low and drops off later. So the current M5 has all sorts of problems with traction in 1st 2nd and even sometimes 3rd gear. As for the Traction control I had it in MDM mode which is sort of between full off and on and allows some wheel spin which is important in this car because full traction control intervenes and kills the boost at the first smell of wheel spin. As for this test I think first one where I used auto mode with lower revs was the better reflection of how this car performs, it had no wheel spin and pulled smoothly. The one I did manually put too much power down and that can lead to control issues.

      +Nick Murray Thanks for your detailed reply. This really makes you think that the F10 M5 with a rear-biased xDrive system would be even more of a rocket. Not sure if it's still a rumor or already confirmed, but if I remember correctly, that's what we can expect for the next generation. No point in adding more and more torque and power if the car - even if it's this heavy - can't bring the power down anymore. If we take a look at the current 7 series and the trend of more lightweight materials and combine that with an all-wheel drive system which is 99% RWD, but only transfers power to the front, when the rear can't take anymore, the next M5 could be one hell of a car. Not saying the current one isn't ... or any M5 for that matter, but that would easily make it the greatest M5 so far.
      Also thanks for all your videos. As a dog-owner who's currently working on being able to comfortably afford an F80 M3, I really appreciate every clip with your M4 in it. :)

      +EtienneTestet A rollRace from 110kmh from 3-Gear the M4 have no chance. And after 200kmh they must be 10lengh... Its realy hart to put the hol power from the M5 in the first 2- Gears. To much NM. I have one with a tune over 700hp and than you can forget the 1-2 and 3 Gear. Over 150Kmh the have enough Grip to put the Power on the ground. My actually M3 have a tune with over 490Whp. And also big problems with the power in the first two gears. But from 100-200Kmh i actually need 7.3sec. Test it with a GPS Box. Next week i put the Vid on my channel.

    The M5 was in economy mode for shifting 1 bar on display however the M4 was in sport plus full bars. Put them both in sport plus engine and DSG and re try.

      +hori m So it was on easy shift for a reason. In the more aggressive modes the car looses even more traction because of the harsh bang into the next gear. This car has all sorts of problems keeping traction and I have found it is faster. Both in sport plus and the M4 is 1-2 car lengths ahead.

    BTW - where are you getting the inflated hp #s? I've heard the same thing, but the interior hp/tq displays are reporting stock limits... haven't yet seen a dyno video with the "true" stock #s

      +John Morgan The average stock dyno of the M4 is 430-440 at the wheel and the M5 is 550-560 at the wheel. The interior hp/tq displays show the same even if you tune the engines and they are putting out 30-40% more.

    How fast is the m5 compared to the carrera s? I don't mean off the line, I mean from 40-100 for example. I'm struggling too see the sense in getting a well specced carrera or carrera s when for the same money I could get a m6 or a slightly used sl63 amg. Although the new turbocharged engines open a lot of doors for easy power upgrades from established porsche tuners like techart or gemballa

    The m5 needs traction off or at the very least MDM on for a rolling start or the car just cuts the power as it’ll try spin up to 120. Also needs comfort suspension setting so the weigh transfer helps grip. Makes a huge difference on a roll!

      On top of that... the dude had it in D mode at level 1 gear shifts. SMH. 1. Dont do roll races on shitty tires. 2.Don't do roll races if you don't know the required settings.

    The power bar for the m5 on the second take was set to 2 bars instead of 3. The m4 has all 3 on and still lost.

    What interesting taste in car aesthetics Nick Z has. Sounds like he would have been a fan of that black, Cadillac CTS-V wagon that Motor Trend took around the 'Ring about 2 years ago and that Jonny Leiberman drove for free for a year - he loved it.

    The E60 M5 looks more aggressive than the F10 M5 imo. An interesting detail comparing the F82 M4 to the F10 M5 is the stiching on the dash. The F82 M4 has this nice white 'sportier' looking stitches compared to the F10 M5 which has this dull black stitches on the dash.

    Second race was more accurate based on my races with M3/4's. They do a commendable job keeping up, but the M5 just has too much power to keep her close.

    That's interesting, I don't think the road you were on helps. A friend of mine has a 2014 M5 and I have a 2015 M4, and the cars are pretty equally matched when the tires are warmed up. We drove from Ansbach to Triberg on the A6 and A81 and it really came down to who got the jump on who. Everytime the road went from 120K to unlimited we would get on it until about 140 mph. Really don't think you get the best look just going out on the highway in the states for a quick test.

    Bad driving in the M5. He was in the wrong gear, if he knew how to drive the M5 would destroy the M4. When he went manual he easily walked away from him.

    The M5 does look better than the M4. One of the best looking sedans around!! And I also agree, a wagon m4 wouldd be amazing

    I used to own a coupe, they are good looking from the outside, but im never going back. Having 4 doors makes my life easier and more comfy. The M5 wins for me since its a bigger car and has 2 more extra door.

    Why haven't you done some Burger Tuning yet? I think it would've been substantially closer if you were running JB4. I would love to see a "rematch" in the near future since we already know the results stock.

      Tuned M4 would leave the M5 standing. No tune because I don't plan to keep the M4 long.

      buy an M4 it has such a nice manual gearbox,I drove both of them and if you have no family
      the m4 is the right choice and everyone looked at the M4 but not at the M5.
      Also if you keep the manual M4 it'll increase in value because the takerate is under 7% and it's the last manual car from ///M

    Can I ask how you avoid the cops? :) and no the M4 just looks better, I think its just the newer design language the bumpers look way more aggressive.

    Love these vids ans hats off for delivering these comparisons to us petrol heads. However, I am a little concerned as to how you haven't been prosecuted by the law?!?! Surely they have everything they need here served on a plate?
