John Wesley Shipp's portrayal of Jay Garrick is just so good, a seasoned hero yet humble and still friendly. Especially taking to account that he was the Flash back on his own show in the 90's.
I find it hilarious that that guy was flash in the 2000 version of the Flash where Mark Hamill was the trickster. Never watched it looks awful now lol.

Wally is just my favorite all around Flash, I associate him as the goofy laid-back everyman like in the DCAU . He actually resolves conflicts peacefully if he can, he recognizes that some Villians aren't evil just mentally ill and in need of care. The true moral center of any team he's in. If any of the Flashes was protecting my city , it would be fine cause they are all great but I hope it would be Wally.
In the justice league animated show when he goes to the bar and just asks buddy to go back to prison. That's some legitimate policing for the people stuff. No instantly attacking and "solving" the issue, but communicating and being peaceful.
Barry Allen is a great character but I grew up with Wally in the comics he proved time and time again why he is the fastest man alive and also has a heart of gold.
I think it’s a testament to the character and creators of Wally West that so many people in this thread alone are choosing him despite Didio and King sabotaging him over the last decade and the fact that Barry has a show and movie. Wally is the best!

Wally. He’s the Flash I grew up with and really projects what I feel a hero should be. He’s compassionate, down to earth, and personable, but also willing to do what needs to be done. He doesn’t hesitate to put the needs of others above his own (and oh my new gods did I hate when DC did with him following flashpoint and rebirth). You know Wally West’s flash is the best when they’re taking his personality and feats and discoveries and giving them to Barry in adaptions (who was otherwise originally pretty boring). I also love Jay, but if we’re picking a Jay Garrick it has to be the new 52 Earth 2 version. The New 52 Earth 2 I thought was so well done and interesting. Its not really that I liked one Jay over the other but I do wish New 52 Earth 2 got some more acknowledgment. There’s also something so cool about his speed coming from merging with Mercury and not the speed force (so he’s essentially the god of speed and has the speed of mercury powers Shazam has).

Bruh, I didn’t find out until I was grown that as I watched JLA as a youngster I was watching Wally’s Flash. And taking a liking to his version of the character and not Barry’s. And since that, Barry still gets the favorite spot even though that’s one of the main reasons I like the Flash 😂.
For me though, born in early 90's I didn't even know who Barry was. Wally has been the flash years before I was born, and when they revived Barry I was already in my late teen and already 'grew up' from american comic books in general. So even until now it's kinda weird to see Barry as the main flash. But I heard that Wally's got the position back since last year or so.
Barry didn't create the Speed Force. Would you people stop saying this? This was revealed in Geoff John's Flash Rebirth, but any other writer ignores it. The Speed Force comes from the Source Wall. It was created when the multiverse was born. Also, for me, the best Flash is Wally West, and it's not even close. He has a great personality (Barry didn't even have one during the Silver Age), amazing character development, and great relationships (Barry Allen, Nightwing, JLA, Teen Titans. He is a friend to all of them). Many Flash abilities and feats come from Wally. Like, speed stealing, infinite mass punch, outran instant teleportation, outran Death. Even the Speed Force was introduced during Wally's run as The Flash. And if Barry is the best Flash, why, in most adaptations, he has Wally's personality and some of his powers and feats?
Wrong. The 2009 Issue of Flash that establishes that Barry created the speedforce came before the New 52 RETCON of the SpeedForce being a thing that always existed since the dawn of time. So, Arris is right. Why bother saying he's wrong if you know he's right? It's fine if you dislike that Barry was made into the reason for the Speedforce's existence. That's completely fine. We all have things we dislike about comics. Like how I have a distaste for what Bendis did to Jon Kent because he didn't want to write a superboy story. That doesn't mean that you should just ignore what happened during that comic even if it is decidedly stupid.
Barry is the definition of what a superhero is. He's not only the best flash but one of the best superheroes. He's also someone Batman genuinely likes to work with.

That’s 247 issues plus annuals , specials , etc. he’s had the best writers. Waid, John’s, Messener Loeb, Morrison and Millar. (And now Adam’s) He’s also the most fleshed out Flash with an actual story arc. He’s grown and matured as a character. The opposite of what you said about Barry Allen. Since Barry’s been back he’s been mostly written terribly. He’s not the same hero he was before. They write him as an angsty kid. Wally was written poorly in Heroes in Crisis and Williamson’s run. That’s it. And that was allllll done because Barry was the lead Flash and Dan Didio hated Wally West. Silver Age Barry had no personality. I mean, calling him “vanilla” would be giving him too much credit. When they brought him back, they wanted to give him more personality, so they basically gave him Wally’s personality. That right there is proof enough for me that Wally is better; they got rid of Wally and then turned Barry into Wally.

I've been a comic reader since 1979. I have followed many Flashes, but given his achievements and discoveries, WALLY is the best Flash at this time, the fastest, most seasoned, and most popular. The only reason at all the Barry had any resurgance is because he had parts of WALLY grafted on to him and the changes to his backstory-Wally and Jay never needed that.
Wally has the most iconic stories and has had the most growth over the years. He’s had speed since he was a child and he’s gone through probably the most natural progression of any hero in comics. He’s gone from sidekick, to hero, to husband, and finally father and has been able to dig himself out of the deepest hole any character ever. I don’t think it’s fair to hold HiC against Wally because it was later revealed to be things truly out of his control, plus that story is so poorly written. Also, while I agree Barry is very important to the Flash mythos, it’s his legacy rather than he himself that means the most. His most impactful moments are when he shows up those few times during Wally’s run as The Flash to give him a pep talk or just be in Wally’s corner when he needs it most. Hot take, but Barry Allen was a more meaningful character when he was dead.
@@KylanWhittaker I’m not arguing Flashpoint is iconic. I don’t think it’s like THE FLASH story though. What other Barry stories can you name that are as iconic? For Wally, there’s tons. Dead Heat, Chain Lightning, Return of Barry Allen, etc. So many, in fact, they stole just about everyone of them from Wally and gave them to Barry for the show because other than Flashpoint, Flash: Rebirth 09, Barry just doesn’t have the record Wally does. Again, no hate on Barry, but for me Wally is THE Flash. He has the strongest connection to the Speed Force. He’s had the most character growth and development over his time as the Flash. Dude’s outran death and come back from Speed Valhalla after being told there’s no return because his connection to the people he loves brought him back. Maybe I'm playing devil's advocate, but with a character as pivotal and important as the Flash, I would make the argument that the point is moot: they're all just as important as the next. I couldn't imagine comics in general without any of these characters. I would say that they all deserve first place in the race to our hearts.
I feel like people only like Barry for the Johns dead mother Retcon and then flashpoint, people don’t really talk about much else. His legacy as a dead hero was stronger (I mean the return of Barry Allen is all about Wally) And heroes in crisis is a bizarre thing to use against Wally, considering his family was essentially dead him being upset and needing some help isn’t a bad thing (and then the actual murders weren’t Wally but Savitar) Barry has also done bad things but doesn’t seem to held to the same account
Wally is without question the best variation of The Flash to ever exist. Rebirth and the television series made me research and respect Barry, but when I think of The Flash, Wally will always be first for me.
i grew up with wally but i love barry more , i love his forensic skills, his intelligence, charm , resiliency, will power , his tragic backstory and how he gave birth to the speedforce
That retcon about Barry creating the Speed Force makes no sense though. It was established in Wally's run and it was pretty much a force that existed since the dawn of time. Not to mention, it's kind of been ignored since it was brought up.

@@dakotatrue12 The problem is that it doesn't really make sense. It was conceptualized after Barry died in the Crisis and it was pretty much shown to exist since time was a thing. I'm not going to try and for e you into thinking either of the Flashes are better than the others, but thay retcon was kind of pointless and seemed like the writers and editors were trying to hard to make Barry relevant again in the wrong way.
Unfortunately Barry Allen’s tragic backstory is a retcon in and of itself and a completely stupid one. Go back to Barry Allen’s original story and you find that his parents were until a much later retcon to make Eobard Thawn something important, so they could justify constantly bringing him back, alive and well. Barry was a great Flash without that. Also the very common misconception of what happened to Barry after THE CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS : Barry became a part of the lightning bolt that made him the Flash, is a New 52 retcon because the publisher at the time hated legacy characters and tried to get rid of all of them save the Batfamily. What he actually did in 1985, was become a tachyon in the Lightning bolt that defied science and recreated his accident give Wally West his powers. Because the world needed the Flash. There is no best Flash, They all are in their own ways.
Wally is undoubtedly the best Flash. He's the one who discovered all additional powers that Barry is depicted with these days. He's the fastest, and he showed the most growth as a person in his tenure as the Scarlet Speedster. He went from a girl-crazy, unsure kid to a mature, confident, well-respected father of twins. I'm not going to go into the Heroes in Crisis because that was badly written and characterized Wally poorly. And it was revealed that Reverse Flash framed him for the deaths in that story. Not to mention realizing you need some therapy is a strength, not a weakness. Maybe if Barry went that route we wouldn't have multiple versions of Flashpoint ... Barry is disqualified because literally every modern version of Barry is depicted as wrecking the timeline of his particular universe. He was well-rounded, mature and inventive in the Silver Age, but his portrayal has regressed since then. So no, I can't agree that Barry is the best.
Agreed on every point. He’s the one legacy character that’s been allowed to create a legacy of his own and have it last. Heroes in Crisis is a stain that’s thankfully being washed away right now!! Plus, Wally’s been successful in the one thing Peter Parker can’t be, true development and growth to the point where he can be married and have kids and he’s still relatable. I think if Waid were to finally do a run on Barry, it could be game changing for the character.
I think Wally and Barry are really really close, but to say you’re not gonna take into account a certain storyline because you don’t like the way it portrays the character is just wrong. If it’s in the comics, and hasn’t been ret conned, then it’s a part of the character. Even if you don’t like it, that’s how the character is made. I think Barry and Wally are pretty much the neck and neck for different reasons, I’ll put it this way though- well I still believe Barry is the best flash, Jay is the most underappreciated, and Wally is the flash that everyone forgets is just behind Barry. And in some particular situations could very easily become the better flash

From a superhero team perspective, Wally is the best, because when you have a group of relatively serious-minded individuals on a team like the Justice League, you need to balance out the group psychology with a funny guy. Granted, Barry can be a funny guy, but Wally is more efficient in that regard, cause he can be a real buffoon sometimes, but it's because of that buffoonery that makes him very human in contrast to most DC Superheroes, or Superheroes in general. As for the Heroes in Crisis storyline? Don't get me started. Tom King was most likely acting as an Avatar writer for Dan Didio's supposed distaste for Wally West.

The person I would have chosen as #3 would have been Max Mercury. He's the one who opened Wally's eyes in what he needed to overcome in order to have the speed to beat The Reverse Flash (#73-79) and he taught Impulse after Wally first fixed Impulse's speed. He's the Zen Master of the Speed Force.
Good video, but HARD disagree. I will always put respect on both Jay and Barry's names, but Wally proved himself to be the best Flash across both Waid's and Johns' runs. No one even acknowledges Heroes in Crisis anymore (if they ever did), as it was completely out of pocket and even current DC realized it was so bad that they retconned it twice in one year. So using that as a mark against him is the wrong call in my opinion. As a side note, you used a lot of Bart Allen Kid Flash and Flash artwork during the Wally section... If we have to count HiC against Wally, then Barry reprogramming the Top into a hero in the Identity Crisis tie-in also needs to count. Since both actions are OOC for their respective heroes, I say disregard both.

I think that if we were able to see pre-flashpoint continuity continue, it’d be interesting to see Bart Allen continue to develop and I truly think he could be a strong contender for the best flash. His potential was shown to be through the roof: he was intuitively doing things that even Wally wasn’t doing. His arc with the Teen Titans that transitioned him from Impulse to Kid Flash forced him to grow up and from that point he was portrayed as a very competent hero. With Wally and Barry’s mentorship, he could really be the next step above Wally in his prime

You forgot to mention the unjust retcon of Barry Allen being the sol generator for which time derives from, as well as every other speedsters'powers. On top of Wally's connection to the speed force being due to Barry Allen himself being the speed force and views Wally West as a sun and vise versa. On top of those crimson cherries, the speed force was also a product of Barry Allen's power being suppressed and shared with the entirety of DC and even marvel just so everyone and everything could catch up to him, just because it wasn't enough for him to slow down. These regions are an important part of Barry Allen's character that can not be ignored or so easily retconed. This is what's been keeping Barry Allen from traveling through time to save his mom for so long, as well as why Do are was always obsessed with Barry's both glory and speed, and even why he has an entire museum dedicated to Barry Allen as "the fastest man alive". Barry Allen is the only speedster that in every continuity runs through time by accident. That completely negates the idea of Wally possibly being faster. And only Bart Allen's power is actually compatible. There are some very important information that also contributes to Bartholomew Henry Allen #1 being not just the real fastest man alive, but the greatest flash that could actually exist. You're the one that originally introduced me to Barry Allen while I still planted him for Wally's sake. You know this just as well as me.
I think what it is, is that wally barely was seen or even mentioned by name with his mask off in the justice league tv shows, which is were alot of us found are love for the flash character. With movies and tv shows causally mention Barry Allen by name as The Flash such as "Catch me if you can" or even those that seen the 90s Flash show, barry Allen became the most recognizable name associated with The Flash for those that didn't read the comics in that period of time. By the time of the 2010s, barry had already came back to life and started appearing more and more in media such as the comics, injustice games, lego batman games,movies, and even tv shows- making a whole new generation of people that only know Barry allen as the Flash, not knowing how much Wally west brought to the flash character and unfortunately I seem to kinda fall in that same crowd being a 05 baby and all.
Yeah someone else pointed it out but the kid flash image used at 2:35 talking about Wally, is literally from Bart Allen revealing his transition from impulse to kid flash during his time in Teen Titans. Plus Bart has canonically been the flash. Just saying, you guys are usually factually more reliable and do characters proper justice.
Always going to be Wally for me. Kid Flash was my favorite character growing up. Don't really know why. I think I liked his costume more than anything else. Watching Wally grow from reluctant/failing hero to unlikeable jerk to the best Flash ever was a treat. I hate everything done to the character over the past fifteen years.
Love Wally, love his jokes and I wish DC would stop taking him off the table. Next DC reboot they need to bring Wally and his sense of humor back, let him be a more happy Flash imo.

We all have things we dislike about comics. Like how I have a distaste for what Bendis did to Jon Kent because he didn't want to write a superboy story. That doesn't mean that you should just ignore what happened during that comic even if it is decidedly stupid.

Wally is the best Flash ever. He’s the best written Flash in the aggregate. That can’t be argued. Flash volume two in almost in it’s entirety is the best. That’s 247 issues plus annuals , specials , etc. he’s had the best writers. Waid, John’s, Messener Loeb, Morrison and Millar. (And now Adam’s)
He’s also the most fleshed out Flash with an actual story arc. He’s grown and matured as a character. The opposite of what you said about Barry Allen. Since Barry’s been back he’s been mostly written terribly. He’s not the same hero he was before. They write him as an angsty kid. Wally was written poorly in Heroes in Crisis and Williamson’s run. That’s it. And that was allllll done because Barry was the lead Flash and Dan Didio hated Wally West. In fact if Dan wasn’t at DC Barry would have probably never come back and things would look very different now.
Wally’s also just a more likable character. Through all of his changes. Young kid, young adult who’s a jerk and then husband and father. He’s funny. Self deprecating, goofy, noble and smart.

I've been a comic reader since 1979. I have followed many Flashes, but given his achievements and discoveries, WALLY is the best Flash at this time, the fastest, most seasoned, and most popular. The only reason at all the Barry had any resurgance is because he had parts of WALLY grafted on to him and the changes to his backstory-Wally and Jay never needed that.

Wally has the most iconic stories and has had the most growth over the years. He’s had speed since he was a child and he’s gone through probably the most natural progression of any hero in comics. He’s gone from sidekick, to hero, to husband, and finally father and has been able to dig himself out of the deepest hole any character ever. I don’t think it’s fair to hold HiC against Wally because it was later revealed to be things truly out of his control, plus that story is so poorly written. Also, while I agree Barry is very important to the Flash mythos, it’s his legacy rather than he himself that means the most. His most impactful moments are when he shows up those few times during Wally’s run as The Flash to give him a pep talk or just be in Wally’s corner when he needs it most. Hot take, but Barry Allen was a more meaningful character when he was dead.

Dead Heat, Chain Lightning, Return of Barry Allen, etc. So many, in fact, they stole just about everyone of them from Wally and gave them to Barry for the show because other than Flashpoint, Flash: Rebirth 09, Barry just doesn’t have the record Wally does. Again, no hate on Barry, but for me Wally is THE Flash. He has the strongest connection to the Speed Force. He’s had the most character growth and development over his time as the Flash. Dude’s outran death and come back from Speed Valhalla after being told there’s no return because his connection to the people he loves brought him back. If Wally doesn’t embody what superhero comics are, then I don’t know who does.

Maybe I'm playing devil's advocate, but with a character as pivotal and important as the Flash, I would make the argument that the point is moot: they're all just as important as the next.
I couldn't imagine comics in general without any of these characters.

Wally is without question the best variation of The Flash to ever exist. Rebirth and the television series made me research and respect Barry, but when I think of The Flash, Wally will always be first for me.

That retcon about Barry creating the Speed Force makes no sense though. It was established in Wally's run and it was pretty much a force that existed since the dawn of time. Not to mention, it's kind of been ignored since it was brought up.

@@dakotatrue12 The problem is that it doesn't really make sense. It was conceptualized after Barry died in the Crisis and it was pretty much shown to exist since time was a thing. I'm not going to try and for e you into thinking either of the Flashes are better than the others, but thay retcon was kind of pointless and seemed like the writers and editors were trying to hard to make Barry relevant again in the wrong way.
Unfortunately Barry Allen’s tragic backstory is a retcon in and of itself and a completely stupid one. Go back to Barry Allen’s original story and you find that his parents were until a much later retcon to make Eobard Thawn something important, so they could justify constantly bringing him back, alive and well. Barry was a great Flash without that. Also the very common misconception of what happened to Barry after THE CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS : Barry became a part of the lightning bolt that made him the Flash, is a New 52 retcon because the publisher at the time hated legacy characters and tried to get rid of all of them save the Batfamily. What he actually did in 1985, was become a tachyon in the Lightning bolt that defied science and recreated his accident give Wally West his powers. Because the world needed the Flash. There is no best Flash, They all are in their own ways.
Wally is undoubtedly the best Flash. He's the one who discovered all additional powers that Barry is depicted with these days. He's the fastest, and he showed the most growth as a person in his tenure as the Scarlet Speedster. He went from a girl-crazy, unsure kid to a mature, confident, well-respected father of twins. I'm not going to go into the Heroes in Crisis because that was badly written and characterized Wally poorly. And it was revealed that Reverse Flash framed him for the deaths in that story. Not to mention realizing you need some therapy is a strength, not a weakness. Maybe if Barry went that route we wouldn't have multiple versions of Flashpoint ...
Barry is disqualified because literally every modern version of Barry is depicted as wrecking the timeline of his particular universe. He was well-rounded, mature and inventive in the Silver Age, but his portrayal has regressed since then. So no, I can't agree that Barry is the best.

I think Wally and Barry are really really close, but to say you’re not gonna take into account a certain storyline because you don’t like the way it portrays the character is just wrong. If it’s in the comics, and hasn’t been ret conned, then it’s a part of the character. Even if you don’t like it, that’s how the character is made. I think Barry and Wally are pretty much the neck and neck for different reasons, I’ll put it this way though- well I still believe Barry is the best flash, Jay is the most underappreciated, and Wally is the flash that everyone forgets is just behind Barry. And in some particular situations could very easily become the better flash

From a superhero team perspective, Wally is the best, because when you have a group of relatively serious-minded individuals on a team like the Justice League, you need to balance out the group psychology with a funny guy. Granted, Barry can be a funny guy, but Wally is more efficient in that regard, cause he can be a real buffoon sometimes, but it's because of that buffoonery that makes him very human in contrast to most DC Superheroes, or Superheroes in general.
As for the Heroes in Crisis storyline? Don't get me started. Tom King was most likely acting as an Avatar writer for Dan Didio's supposed distaste for Wally West.

The person I would have chosen as #3 would have been Max Mercury. He's the one who opened Wally's eyes in what he needed to overcome in order to have the speed to beat The Reverse Flash (#73-79) and he taught Impulse after Wally first fixed Impulse's speed. He's the Zen Master of the Speed Force.
Good video, but HARD disagree. I will always put respect on both Jay and Barry's names, but Wally proved himself to be the best Flash across both Waid's and Johns' runs. No one even acknowledges Heroes in Crisis anymore (if they ever did), as it was completely out of pocket and even current DC realized it was so bad that they retconned it twice in one year. So using that as a mark against him is the wrong call in my opinion.

Great video! I think that if we were able to see pre-flashpoint continuity continue, it’d be interesting to see Bart Allen continue to develop and I truly think he could be a strong contender for the best flash.
His potential was shown to be through the roof: he was intuitively doing things that even Wally wasn’t doing. His arc with the Teen Titans that transitioned him from Impulse to Kid Flash forced him to grow up and from that point he was portrayed as a very competent hero. With Wally and Barry’s mentorship, he could really be the next step above Wally in his prime

You forgot to mention the unjust retcon of Barry Allen being the sol generator for which time derives from, as well as every other speedsters'powers. On top of Wally's connection to the speed force being due to Barry Allen himself being the speed force and views Wally West as a sun and vise versa. On top of those crimson cherries, the speed force was also a product of Barry Allen's power being suppressed and shared with the entirety of DC and even marvel just so everyone and everything could catch up to him, just because it wasn't enough for him to slow down. These regions are an important part of Barry Allen's character that can not be ignored or so easily retconed. This is what's been keeping Barry Allen from traveling through time to save his mom for so long, as well as why Do are was always obsessed with Barry's both glory and speed, and even why he has an entire museum dedicated to Barry Allen as "the fastest man alive". Barry Allen is the only speedster that in every continuity runs through time by accident. That completely negates the idea of Wally possibly being faster. And only Bart Allen's power is actually compatible. There are some very important information that also contributes to Bartholomew Henry Allen #1 being not just the real fastest man alive, but the greatest flash that could actually exist.

I think what it is, is that wally barely was seen or even mentioned by name with his mask off in the justice league tv shows, which is were alot of us found are love for the flash character. With movies and tv shows causally mention Barry Allen by name as The Flash such as "Catch me if you can" or even those that seen the 90s Flash show, barry Allen became the most recognizable name associated with The Flash for those that didn't read the comics in that period of time. By the time of the 2010s, barry had already came back to life and started appearing more and more in media such as the comics, injustice games, lego batman games,movies, and even tv shows- making a whole new generation of people that only know Barry allen as the Flash, not knowing how much Wally west brought to the flash character and unfortunately I seem to kinda fall in that same crowd being a 05 baby and all.

Plus Bart has canonically been the flash. Just saying, you guys are usually factually more reliable and do characters proper justice.

Always going to be Wally for me. Kid Flash was my favorite character growing up. Don't really know why. I think I liked his costume more than anything else. Watching Wally grow from reluctant/failing hero to unlikeable jerk to the best Flash ever was a treat. I hate everything done to the character over the past fifteen years.
