It would be nice to know with certainty if Barry did officially exist at some point in the DCAU's history, but I guess when you love and enjoy Wally's Flash that much you never really have to think too hard about it if the JL series itself doesn't. Like with a lot of the DC heroes the STAS episode "Speed Demons" was one of my earliest introductions to Flash as a 90s kid who couldn't have the most access to the actual comics at the time, and apparently it was always Wally in that episode anyway, but then it's always interesting to learn about the characters who had carried the same mantle in comics prior.
Revisiting the 1990s live-action series of The Flash for the first time in recent years I have to admit I wasn't immediately used to seeing a more mature Flash after such a long time of knowing Flash as our loveable goof Wally in the DCAU, but then you can't exactly say that "Barry's Flash is always more serious" after some of the stuff Ezra Miller's Barry does in the new Flash movie (his younger self in particular).

I really hope you guys see this comment, because this joke you did at 1:54 was too relevant to me. Let me explain: Recently I got sick and passed most of my time binging this channel and also re-watching Justice League (thanks to this channel making me want to). When I grew too tired though due to my sickness, I'd have plenty of nights and naps where I deliriously rolled around trying to sleep -- you know how it is -- and the two things I found myself listening to to try lulling me to sleep were a RUclips video of calming ocean sounds, or albums of one of my favorite bands, Rammstein! So now seeing this joke about "soothing, sleepy sounds", Rammstein, and on this channel... it's like it was written specifically for me a couple weeks ago. Anyways, thanks for reading, and thanks for all the entertaining content.

i think that instead of a version of the Crisis, maybe the DCAU had his own version of the Zero Hour event instead, that also would explain the absence of Hal Jordan,Hal was possessed by Paralax tried to use all Green Lantern corp powers to went back to the beggining of time and rewrite reality, but in this version, Barry sacrifice himself and trapped Hal and Paralax outside of time using the speed force, since they were pulled out of time, the timeline self rewriten as this characters never existed since they are outside of time, that would explain why Jonh became Hal for a short period of time when Chronus was messing with the time, maybe weakning his prison, and later when Wally does the Infinite Mass Punch to defeat Lex and vanish into the speed force, could be Barry inside of the speed force helping him come back making a rift so the League could pull him back into reality(and also the explanation of why only Wally remembers him) ,and we could use this to explain all that inconsistent comics and products of JL and JLU,maybe they happen before this version of Zero Hour happen and the cartoons are the rewriten timeline???

Great theory. Just going to point out that Parallax was retconned into being a separate entity after the nature of GL's powers were changed from "whatever the wielder wants, but it can't affect wood/yellow" to "turning the light of willpower into tangible objects or energy beams and flying really fast", meaning no time travel and Zero Hour doesn't actually work.
      But I like the theory.

@@samueldimmock694It doesn’t make much sense to say Zero Hour doesn’t work because of the Parallax retcon when the book that make that retcon in no implied that was the case. Zero Hour was still very much canon after the Parallax retcon. Also, it's not like Hal as Parallax singlehandlely rewrote reality to his liking, he did it with the help of Extant, who also have vaguely defined reality warping powers. And I reckon that, in the build up to Zero Hour, there were several scenes or Parallax and/or Extant killing time travelers and stealing their powers, so what you're saying about Parallax didn't really aply in the first place.

But saying "zero hour still works after the retcon because it's still canonical after the retcon" doesn't seem like a good argument to me. It implies that comics never have plot holes, which is not really how comics work.

@@samueldimmock694 To be completely honest, I read Zero Hour so long ago that I can't be certain of what I said either, I speaking out of pure memory alone. But what I meant wasn't that "Zero Hour still works after the retcon because it’s still canon". The entire point of the Parallax retcon was to handwave Hal's crimes away by putting blame on a separate entity. It would be too blatant a plot hole if the retcon make the events it's trying to clear Hal off imposible to happen in the first place. For all his faults, most of Johns's good work (meaning, the pre-New 52 books) are build on past continuity and his run in Gl in particular is cemented by connecting several unrelated events of previous Gl stories together. Like Eon, who along with Parallax and the other emotional spectrum entities, are so over-powered in part to justify Zero Hour. Of course, I would have to reread Gl Rebirth and Zero Hour to be sure of what im saying since that was also a long time ago, but eh. That's a little too much reading just to answer a RUclips coment. But I thought I should mention it anyways, just to clarify things.

So maybe the DCAU's supplemental materials that don't quite fit into what we saw on screen are actually just different timelines where events are just *slightly* different.

So Wally then took the mantle of flash before anyone noticed Barry Allen’s flash died. So that way it looks like the flash didn’t die (people wouldn’t lose hope). It would explain why no one talks about Barry Allen as the flash in the animated series.

i used to roleplay specifically this version of the flash/wally back in early 2014, and i had this very same conundrum when attempting to connect the pieces together. it really boils down to the overarching theme of a barry-wally fusion, as like you mentioned, there's quite a few DCAU cartoon characters who get this treatment, something completely unique to the DCAU that actually gives it some charm. (just don't ask what marvel and DC were doing in april of 1996.) as a result - i simply boiled down to what i liked for "flash" rather than "wally", and just gave barry allen a normal life with iris, and the note that he was someone wally greatly adored, thus privy to his flashy secret (that throwaway 'uncle' line.)
i did comb through pretty much every piece of available DCAU and tangentially adjacent media at the time, and came to the conclusion yeah, there's just too much in the tie-in comics that throw out what the cartoon had previously established, it was more trying to sell the overall idea to both barry AND wally fans but SEPARATELY. every one of these tie-in comics seemed very focused on 'how much of the mainline DC timeline can we sneak in here to try and merge the comic's relevance into the cartoon', such as characters like kon-el showing up for a day only to be mysteriously wiped from the timeline (though there is an unused design somewhere for a STAS 90's kon-el, if my memory serves me right)
you can even see this in a more recent "we are definitely b:tas continuity" run where they ... just straight up said jason todd existed separately from tim to sort of... squeeze the element of death in the family trauma ... that was already present in tim's story? speaking of, the beyond comics are also super notorious for this. at some point it really becomes less coherent and more corporate saying "oooh, look, we're dangling your fave in front of you like a shiny set of keys."
your video really gave me some new thoughts that i probably agree with more than the beliefs about it i held over a decade ago, though, and i'm so happy that someone else has finally recognized how absolutely horrendous it is to explain!

The reverse flash and barry tampering with the timeline explains why this video was so hard to make.

My headcanon, based on nothing in the actual DCAU but more on the comics, is that Barry retired to the Legion time period (30th or 31st century, whatever it is on a given Tuesday) with Iris after some battle with Thawne had him wind up there. From there he left Central City to Wally (possibly originally from Keystone City like the comics, but it's not important if he is). Wally, not feeling totally worthy of taking Barry's position (despite his boasting), continued to operate as if the original Flash never left which is why he was so protective of his Secret Identity even up until Starcrossed. It'd help nicely tie together some non-quite-canon by DCAU adjacent stuff like Earth-12 and Jay's appearance in the tie-in comics, since Wally's trying to pass himself off as Barry to people who don't know them so it going from Jay to him as the second Flash works there, and Barry wouldn't be in the Speed Force yet by the Beyond time period if he's still alive 1000 years in the future. Plus it ties into Impulse's original, where Barry had kids in the future and his son had Bart who traveled back in time to be helped by Wally. Just fun little idea for where Barry could be (and how he could show up for the Flash Museum opening through time travel).

So I went back to the episode where Batman reveals their identity by their names and he says “wally west” and he also shows his orange hair when he takes off his mask. It's astonishing to see all these people in the comments talking about Wally as the "lesser-known" Flash. Wally was the Flash for more than twenty years. His name was used for every adaptation of the character in that time. Even when the comics did multiverse shenanigans, Wally was always the name of their Flash. Barry has only resurfaced in popularity after Flashpoint, because all the modern material is heavily based off of New 52. So thinking that Barry is the "true" Flash and Wally is a lesser-known one means you're either very old or very young.

I love Barry Allen’s flash, but I would rather him not be a part of this canon
But speedsters are immune to retcons.
    This gives me a theory.
Wally may have some lingering memories of Barry Allen. Thus making him believe he was alone in the crime lab when Barry was there as well. This might also explain the merged personality and job choices. Due to the temporal ripples from Barry’s sacrifice Barry no longer exists. Wally knows something is wrong and that leads him to work in the crime lab. It is a time echo. And a phantom memory interpreted as a calling, a memory from another speedster. And this would explain the costumes. He created the yellow one himself, but those echos made him update it. And would answer all the other media as exsisting pre- sacrifice, the timeline with Barry Allen.
But every choice has a million outcomes.
So the two universes split. One where Barry lives and one where he was forgotten.
This is the story of Barry Allen.
