    As a trauma nurse, I have seen these used and was totally blown away at how well they work. We have a race track near us and received a few of the racers that wrecked at 150mph plus. And when we hear those numbers we expected a mangled mess. Nope, the guys were overall really safe and healthy. Amazing tech

      Thank you for what you do. 4 weeks ago I crashed on track (no airbag unfortunately) and the trauma team was awesome. Worst
      of it was seven broken ribs and partially collapsed lung along with numerous less serious injuries. Edit: typos. Still one-handed.

    Man I wish these were out like 10 years ago. A good friend of mine was driving his homemade motorcycle down a rural road, an older woman was coming the opposite way, and turned left into her driveway right in front of him. Said she didn't see his headlights or hear his horn, nor see him waving to get her attention, and turned anyway, with no signal light. He hit the side of her car, and passed away on the scene.
    He was huge on safety, and would even go out with flourescent paint to mark out ruts and potholes in the roads for other motorcycle riders to prevent accidents.
    He also built many motorcycles in his barn at home, many of which won awards at multiple shows. He loved to use brass where possible which added a nice touch to his creations. He was also the kind of guy who would drop everything he was doing to help anyone with anything, no matter how big or small, and would never ask for a thing in return. He used to come to all the parties in high school, and stay sober, to make sure nobody drove home wasted, and would use his own gas to drive anyone home who needed a ride, and even pick you up the next day to bring you to your car so nobody was ever stuck. Truly amazing person. He was a shorter spitting image of Chuck Liddell, absolutely jacked lol.
    RIP Dustin "D-Train". You are missed every single day. I'm convinced these vests would have saved his life.

    Crashed at 35 mph 4 days ago, watching this with 24 stitches in my left knee in bed for 5 weeks. Person slammed on the brakes with a football field in front of them as I was shoulder checking. Then not even fully looked black and “I’m the in the air right now this not good” did a front flip. I had full gear. Gauntlet gloves. Race boots. And a zip together Tex jacket and pants. All Dainese. I broke my femur and had surgery on it and have screws now. Titanium ones 👀. And a compression fracture on my l1 vertebrae. I’m buying an air bag one piece leather and wearing it every time I go ride after I recover. I have a nice one piece with no airbag. But this just confirmed my wanting of a one piece airbag. Can’t imagine if I was in my squid days 8 years ago with just that stupid icon back protector. Great Video!

    • @tickandslug
      @tickandslug Год назад +18

      @@crab_spy_ if you attach it properly it will go off any way you fall off. You attach them with enough room so that you don't set it off in normal riding but not enough to not go off in an actual accident. Most people at first are afraid of setting it off by accident by forgetting to unclip and walking away so they leave a ton of room which is bad in a real accident, but in reality the cord takes a ton of force to pull out. It's enough force to pull your bike over before it goes off.

    I love my Klim In&Box airbag vest. I prefer it over the Dainese vests because it has a much larger inflatable section to protect your neck. The idea is that the neck portion inflates and actually lifts your helmet up slightly, which allows it to reduce not just direct impacts to the neck, but also axial loading if you hit your head.

It is thanks to the high end manufacturers that stuff like this gets developed and comes to the rest of the market over time. I would be interested in seeing a video that compares high end / mid range / budget / ali express special safety gear though.
    Something like Dainese / RST / Oxford / Ali Express
    I wear a lot of RST gear and it has always been amazing and have had a few slides in my time as well. Even now when I could afford to I don't think I'll ever drop the money on Dainese stuff as I don't think I'm ever going to be riding at the tolerances where having it over RST would make a difference. It would be really interesting to know if that's actually the case though.

Klim also has a vest that goes under a jacket but requires a monthly subscription to use or it won't deploy (you know you've reached peak dickbag when you charge a monthly sub for a safety feature). Alpinestars also has their tech-air suits, jackets and a vest that goes under any jacket, but they're just as pricey as Dianese.

    I was lucky enough to see it in world premier: Vittore Cossalter, the inventor, was my professor of applied mechanics at the University of Padua. The first day of lesson the madlad came into the classroom on a hot-rodded electric-blue bike he somehow got Aprilia and Ducati to collaborate on (factori tuned Ducati v-twin on a factory modified Aprilia chassis), with the prototype of that jacket on. He then proceded to "fall" from the bike to demonstrate the effects, and all of this cause he needed designers for his University racing team. Absolute mad-man!!!

    They definitely hid that it deployed after the van hit with the crash dummy graphic. Since the suit has to detect the force before it could deploy, there's no way it deployed before the van hit from the back. It did protect the head even though the spine would be shattered.

    • @loganishere4760
      @loganishere4760 Год назад +4

      Nah i think you're misreading the situation. the suit deployed before it hit the dummy. the whole point is to minimize the amount of damage done, so it detects abnormal angles and velocity. the suit deployed when it detected abnormal movement from the dummy, cause the van hit the wheel and pushed the whole bike forward, which is what would happen in most instances. His spine wouldn't have been shattered because the suit deployed before the van made contact with the dummy. it straightened out its back so it couldn't arch backwards from impact. look at the slow mo shot, the thing deployed before hitting its back.

    • @DetroitMicroSound
      @DetroitMicroSound Год назад +7

      It absolutely deployed a time later than impact. You can clearly see how much later it deployed, in the footage.. dude went flying...... The system isn't designed to protect a stationary person. It's designed for people already in motion. They shouldn't have tried a stationary test, as it's not relevant at all.

    • @1234567890CAB
      @1234567890CAB Год назад +4

      @@loganishere4760 I agree that's the idea in theory, and that would most likely work fine on a larger bike with a bigger tire and more distance between the back tire and your back. However, in this specific example the bumper of the van was almost above the back tire. At 12:00 you can use the < and > key on the keyboard to go frame by frame and only after his entire back is against the hood can you see the front of the vest start to inflate and the ripples in the fabric as it fills with gas. What I'm referring to is at 12:40 they show the entire no airbag slow-mo shot before they insert the crash test dummy graphic, then at 12:55 they insert the graphic as soon as the bumper touches the dummy so you cant see exactly when the front of the vest inflates. This video was definitely sponsored by Dainese, and at 8:58 you can see a Dainese van. Most likely Dainese did not like that the vest did not have enough time to inflate because the tall bumper went over the small tire and they wanted it "covered up." The airbag is still better than nothing, and would help in most cases, but there is also room for improvement. Most likely the vest has accelerometers inside it that sense the movements and rotations, however that means that the suit itself needs to move. Because of inertia an object stays at rest unless acted on by an outside force. The dummy is sitting still and the bike is pushed out from under him but the torso, and thus the vest, is relatively still. Then the outside force is the bumper pushing the torso and vest causing both to begin accelerating. In the first test the bike is moving and then stops abruptly causing the rider to lean forward and thus create a weird rotation that the vest can detect. There is enough time while the rider is in the air for the airbag to deploy before the rider lands on the car or road. I believe an improvement that could be made is adding proximity sensors to the suit, so if it detects an object is rapidly approaching you it can deploy before the object even touches you and before there is any acceleration or rotation. However this would be much more computationally heavy because a computer would have to calculate and decide if the object is somebody getting on the back of your bike, a car that is just passing by a bit too close, if the object is slow enough to stop in time, or if an impact is unavoidable and the airbag needs to deploy.
