Much better from this perspective to watch than being in it. The new rating system between NHTSA and IIHS for new cars quite annoyingly factors in things like auto-stop and collision warning. Like even if the crash didn't even dent the car, it would be an automatic 3 because it didn't have pedestrian alert.
I completely agree, why should the safety of the driver if hit by a drunk driver be worth as much if not less then the safety of something stupid enough to get infront of a moving car. Any driver worth their salt should be able to also stop the car faster and sooner then an unreliable ultrasonic sensor.
@@ThePower1037 And those sensors have actually probably caused some crashes when they suddenly stop the car, like on a steep driveway or where the driver was going to pass or whatever and it stopped the car early
Well I guess technically the collision warning and automatic braking would be under safety features so it kinda makes sense, but then again it would be nice to keep it the same and score all cars under the same conditions, because from what your saying a car could be really safe in a collision but if it doesn't have the sensors it could have a lower score then a car that has them but not be as good in a actual collision.
What? There have been and there still are separated numbers for driver, passengers, baby and pedestrian safety. The "EuroNCAP 5 stars yada yada" thing is only because of course we need an average sometimes. During commercials and stuff, would be hard to show off the whole chart with a dozen data points, so manufacturers want to show off the big number. But safety is a bit more nuanced than that. You can go to the NHTSA, IIHS and EuroNCAP sites to see every single test and number with notes from the engineers and all.
First thing I did when I found out my wife was pregnant was sell my 1978 XC GXL Ford Fairmont and buy an almost new 5.7l Holden Statesman... I loved that big bad Ford, but I (sort of) understand a thing called physics and wanted my wife and child alive. I knew when people said "you'll be right in that thing, heaps of metal to protect you" they failed to grasp the concept of inertia and crumple zones. Not to mention airbags.
That al×ays bugs me, when people look at a car that doesn't crumple, and think that means it's safer. "Ah, look at that, it went 40mph into a wall, and you can drive away from that!" Well, the car might, but you'd be seriously unhappy, probably for the rest of your life. Those injuries stay with you.
@@musewolfman Yeah the car can be rebuilt once they hose out the soup that used to be the people occupying it during the crash. A wise man once said to me, speed never kills anybody... Stopping suddenly, that's what gets you. But I at least wanted to give us a chance and the old Ford wasn't going to do that. The new Statesman was sooooooooo much faster too, less power actually, but it could use the power without being dangerous
Probably my favorite video on the channel so far 😂 I love everyone’s dark sense of humor when it comes to car crashes. “10$ junkyard car seat vs. 1500$ car seat” needs to happen.
I had a bad crash in my e30 last summer. The crash was a frontal offset impact on the driver side going about 30-50kph into an opel astra J going about the same speed. My car was a 1990 318is with a fully loaded trunk and 3 passengers which suffered minor injuries. I experienced memory loss probably from hitting the steering wheel with my head and a 2nd degree burn on my right foot because hot coolant spilled on it I suppose from a heater pipe breaking. Somehow walked out of the crash with my own legs after a passerby helped me open the door and recovered fully after about a month only experiencing mild knee pain for a couple more months. I think the car held up surprisingly well considering that it was developed in the late 70s - early 80s with no airbags. We were all wearing seatbelts and it seems like the engine and transmission did not enter the cabin. By modern standards it is very outdated and dangerous but that little box did well and i’m glad it was able to take the hit and save me. ABS alone would have prevented the entire crash from happening in the first place. Old cars might be well built but they are not safer like a lot of people think and as my crash demonstrates it also comes in very handy to have electronics preventing the crash from happening at all.
I loved the roll over test , I fell asleep driving home after a 12h night shift and I woke up doing 3 barrel rolls in an hatchback toyota yaris at 50mph and surprisingly I felt nothing inside the car🤣 pretty safe for a tiny car 👍🏻
@@AR15andGOD pulling 12 hours for several days you don't get enough sleep. It's happened to me but luckily I didn't wreck. In high school I took an airbag to the face when a classmate ran into me (him: Jeep Cherokee, me: Chrysler Acclaim). Both cars total'ed, pretty dangerous thing, but that airbag punched the crap out of me. Had a little gasbag burn as well from the chemical stuff inside, and it pushed some glass from the driver side window into me. Good times. Thanks, Brandon.
Yeah, people talk about airbags all the time like they're the hero of safety, but IMO they're probably the worst of all modern safety devices. Seatbelts, crumple zones, soft/flexible interior panels, etc. do way more than airbags and unlike airbags they won't injure you worse in some cases.
@@nunyabusiness896 That statement should only apply to front facing airbags imo. Curtain airbags/side-seat airbags don't intrude on your space as violently as the steering wheel and dash airbags.
Crash test ratings have gone from “how safe am I in the event of a crash” to “how inattentive can I be while driving” judging more about what systems the car has
Car companies are doing their best to cover their own asses from customer negligence and lawsuits. It's not about customer safety, it's about protecting themselves from legal issues.
Car design hasn't helped with this TBH. Your an idiot if you try and use a phone while driving, but a lot of cars now seem to be designed with built in distractions from the factory. Started with fancy radios, but I've seen vehicles where the climate control was done through a touchscreen. If I have to look away from the road to turn the defroster on (because it is on a stupid touchscreen) you have screwed up as an automotive engineer!
@@scottthewaterwarrior I think mercedes and bmw announced that touchscreen controls are no longer valid and a thing of the past and they wont be making them anymore. I think they announced it like this instead of calling them "dangerous" to avoid recalling

I owned a badass 05 mustang (bought it already built, had 600hp, was WILD) I got rear ended by someone going 70+ while i was at a dead stop, my air bag did NOT deploy (got a recall for that exact issue a few years later from ford), but i walked away with whiplash and some bruises; the guy in the WRX who hit me was much worse off.
I remember watching the crash test videos of the Pontiac Transport back in the day and seeing it fail so hard for a family hauler was horrible to watch. What made it even gut-wrenching was that we actually had one as a daily family van for awhile. 😖
I love my classic Camaros but I love the safety of my 5th gen SS. I had a 2014 2SS/RS and a drunk driver hit me head on doing 70+. That car held up very well, the seatbelt pretensioners went off and and my face never even hit the airbag, even though the rear of the car came off the ground as the car spun 180. I decided on another modern Camaro for most of my driving enjoyment and to keep the classics for a few rides or shows a year
Can vouch for the F-body. Back in 07, I passed out at the wheel going an estimated 50mph, hit the side of a small cement bridge. Car looked like it went off a cliff but just broke the left fibula. Thankfully I was the only one muffed up. 🚑 (2001 z28) 6speed with T-tops.. gonna miss that one.

I think a big difference is the use of factory cars. Mods make a difference, though I feel that they often won't be the best because mods can change the structure. Would like to see how those mods I saw in HS would do in a crash, like that one lifted ranger that had a chain for a front bumper.
I hit a tree on the passenger side in my s13 at 105mph when I was 17. The engine was in the passenger seat. I had a concussion and a laceration on my head, a broken finger from a piece of trim blasting through the steering wheel, and what looked like a seatbelt tattoo. 😂 It was a miracle I wasn't seriously injured 😂 It was seriously total carnage all around me except for the little bubble in the driver seat where I was. I wish I could post photos here because it looked insane.
I think if they don't drive the cars and know nothing about them except "Yeah I've seen one of these on my way home" then it won't be as authentic as that video, but yeah, I think they could play around with that concept - there's a lot of cars each one of us drove or rode in - friend's, family, taxis... Police cruisers. Because some of us are *flicks knife* dangerous!
I would love to see what the late 80's early 1990's Ford Festiva ( made by kia) was rated. Every one i saw in junkyard the motor shot out the bottom and passenger cabins were good.
Honestly, a car seat D-List would be awesome for all the car moms and car dads out here. Not sure if it would really fit the scope/vibe of donut though.
i think it would im sure much like hoonigan they have kids or plan to (see 1000hp minivan) and would want to be able to impress their kids with the world of cars but safely.
My brother had a wreak in the "catfish" camero back in '99. I'm surprised at its ratings, considering he had so many injuries and his 2 passengers didn't make it. The car also went through a similar crash to what was shown.
At 65 mph the forces on your body are immense, multiple bones broken organs torn and punctured, concussions, brain bleeds are expected. You may look pretty intact from the outside (aswell as the passenger compartment of the vehicle) but your insides tell a very different story.
TBH I wonder if the rating cited was for that crash or just the normal 30 MPH government crash. Because there certainly seemed to be a lot of intrusion into the passenger compartment.
Don’t be scared in a 4th gen camaro or trans am. I’ve totaled one, walked away with a sore neck, I know several people personally who have totaled them way worse than mine was and walked away without scratches and there’s countless people on the forums and Facebook groups that have totaled these cars and been fine. They’re actually pretty damn safe in accidents. *edit* I should’ve specified, when I totaled mine, I wrapped it around a telephone pole, just right at the b pillar on the drivers side. Window shot down when it happened, so I popped the T top off, and crawled out.
Having a massive front end really helps. I've often wondered how newer cars, with modern crumple zone knowledge and building techniques, would fair in crashes if they still had 6+ foot long hoods.
@@scottthewaterwarrior definitely helps. I should’ve specified, when I totaled mine, I wrapped it around a telephone pole, just right at the b pillar on the drivers side. Window shot down when it happened, so I popped the T top off, and crawled out.

Wow, very interesting. Thanks for sharing this, i feel like nowadays people don’t think/priorise safety in their cars. Quick releases, airbags delete, etc. And for the stocky, imagine doing a 5th gen prelude O.o
Maybe because most cars so insanely safe to begin with? Back in the day the second safest car in the market was a dead trap compared to the safest one. Nowadays, you'll walk away from most accidents even in the cheapest of cars. That's obviously talking about countries with proper safety laws where manufacturers are forced to improve safety. In my country, you were able to buy a car without airbags until 2019 I think.

Nolan’s bit in this video was hilarious. The hype of the safety rating and of course the close up with “I’m gonna go crash my car”
James with the subtle Benchmade 940 flex. Outstanding choice sir.
Where we were living at the time, in outback Western Australia, we had huge animals and road train trucks that you're pretty well fucked if you get in an accident with... But I at least wanted to give us a chance and the old Ford wasn't going to do that. The new Statesman was sooooooooo much faster too, less power actually, but it could use the power without being dangerous
Trucks are pretty unsafe, most deaths are from rollovers. Just sayin.

Probably my favorite video on the channel so far 😂 I love everyone’s dark sense of humor when it comes to car crashes. “10$ junkyard car seat vs. 1500$ car seat” needs to happen.
5:24 beautiful Farley impression

Let’s fucking go Brandon eh
Yeah, people talk about airbags all the time like they're the hero of safety, but IMO they're probably the worst of all modern safety devices. Seatbelts, crumple zones, soft/flexible interior panels, etc. do way more than airbags and unlike airbags they won't injure you worse in some cases.
@@nunyabusiness896 they work tremendously well in preventing spinal injuries. Soft / flexible interior panels won’t do anything for you in a crash.
@@nunyabusiness896 That statement should only apply to front facing airbags imo. Curtain airbags/side-seat airbags don't intrude on your space as violently as the steering wheel and dash airbags.

My 1998 GMC Safari was rated 1*, but went up to 3* for the driver in 2000 :)
Crash test ratings have gone from “how safe am I in the event of a crash” to “how inattentive can I be while driving” judging more about what systems the car has
Seriously tho!! They should separate the 2 ratings

Not a safety problem at least, but really shitty. I worry that will become the norm for all cars in a few years: making you pay to use features that are already in the car.
my friend got into a collision last year (she survived!) and the after effects scared me a lot. so in my research phase of the car buying process ive been watching so, so many cars run into things and have things run into them. absolute carnage
Okay, note to self...if the ramp is unavoidable, DO NOT try a barrel roll.

And, tuck your arms in and keep then down.

“Oh ja, ich bin ein verrückter Deutscher!!”
I came here to point this out as well
I remember watching the crash test videos of the Pontiac Transport back in the day and seeing it fail so hard for a family hauler was horrible to watch. What made it even gut-wrenching was that we actually had one as a daily family van for awhile. 😖
That's the one that cut off one of the crash test dummy's legs and nearly decapitated him with the steering wheel!
Love the Camaros rating when you can literally see the dummies head hit off the door

The requirements are really different across the years, so a 5* car from 2002 could be easily a 2* car nowadays.

I think a big difference is the use of factory cars. Mods make a difference, though I feel that they often won't be the best because mods can change the structure.
Would like to see how those mods I saw in HS would do in a crash, like that one lifted ranger that had a chain for a front bumper.
I'm interested in how all the body stiffening mods they did to the Miata affect this. I'd imagine they affect how the car crumples
