Man you really need to make photo books, your pictures are gold, they are unique, artistic, aesthetic, i can't bring my self to dislike any of your photographs, i just can't help keep pausing the video and staring at the pleasing photographs, good job joe, you are my favorite photographer hands down and a person i always look up to, please don't ever dare to change your way of shooting, color grading and making these videos.
Thank you Issam, that's such a kind observation and huge compliment! I've been planning a book of images for the past few years, but it's something I really want to prioritise over the next year. It would actually be very enjoyable on my part as my background is actually in design!
I would insta-buy any photography book you produce! I love scrolling through your blog just because there are more images and you can take your time looking at them
*Hope you're enjoying the vlog!* Just a note on the whole HLG/HDR situation... The whole vlog was filmed in HLG mode on the GH5, though unfortunately, I wasn't able to fully upload an HLG version to RUclips, as the quality on SDR screens just didn't quite look right. Given that the majority of you guys won't be watching on HDR devices, I decided to upload this as standard SDR. I am still very keen to watch the technology develop and hope to make use of it soon though! Also, if you haven't spotted it yet, I've just published the URBAN CHROME vol.2 preset pack! Get your hands on it here: allam.co/urban-chrome-2 ✌️
Hi I really love your work!! The square in front of the Shimbashi station is usually used as a place to meet up and thats why lots of guys are standing around.
I think the best way to explore a place is to almost experience it like a local, and it really does reflect in your vlog. And those Japan streets look sooo aesthetic! You've shown us some cool places in these Japan vlogs. Thanks! Do you have anymore trips planned for the next few months?
Cheers! I love exploring Japan, and Asia in general is so photogenic to me. I've got a few trips planned, including Paris next and then some work in Antigua and New York later in the year which I am very excited about.
Yeah I’ve definitely been making a conscious effort to change things and evolve the channel a bit, but I’m also planning to experiment even further with some other styles this year!
Joe ! Stumbled into this video, looking for something entirely different. Glad I did. Nicely --- nicely --- done. Brilliant shots --- very well edited. Crisp pace. Friendly tone. Reminded me of a Japan stay --- 50 years ago. Keep up the good work.
Love seeing your street photography progression. I can't decide whether I come here for the photos or the videos. Excellent stuff!! You've also convinced me to give Japan a try :)
I just came back from a short Tokyo vacation and I love reliving my stay through your videos. Though I've been to Japan many times, it never is easy readjusting to normal life once you get back home. Thank you so much for making these vlogs. You do an excellent job capturing the essence of Japan. I'm able to pretend a little that I'm back in my tiny room sipping BOSS coffee and eating Melon pan.
Your videos are so inspirational and informative. Thr's a lot I learn from them. Hopefully someday I could walk with you taking photos down the streets of Japan. :)
Joe - Shimbashi is a lively spot after dark as well; as it's surrounded by business districts, in the evenings Shimbashi comes alive as a salaryman nomikai/drinking spot. All of those back alleys are packed with little izakayas, bars, yakiniku joints, etc. Ah - as your video plays I see you caught that! Hope you enjoy it!
People waiting for someone in front of the Shinbashi station because it’s convenient. And there is a symbol, the choo choo train! So we easily find our friends. Plus, Shinbashi is a big business city with a lot of people working there.
fantastic video and pics , making me jealous, last time I was in Japan I stayed not far from Shimbashi at Shiba Park.....great areas and great views.....thanks for sharing again cheers
Cheers, Tom! Haven't got any more _vlogs_ from Japan from this trip, but I do have a couple of other videos that I filmed there that still need editing.
I thought of something while watching your Japan videos. It gives off the same feeling as if youre actually there where you just cant look away from the different sceneries. 😅
I always love watching you explore Tokyo... I need to go back there...miss it so much... & hey that Mos Burger place looks awesome... Quick Burger in France & Belgium is my fav...
I love to walk aimlessly I walk a lot in urban environment and discover randomly perfect shooting angle ... I went to Tokyo and this is the best place on earth for such an activity will definitely go back .
That's "SL plaza" (SL=steam locomotive, you see that old train?) where you see a lot of people waiting. It's a popular meeting spot of Shinbashi Station, just like "hachiko statue" outside of Shibuya Station.
I don't know how I bumped into your videos but I'm glad I did. I'm more of a Leica Street Photography aficionado and was super stoked you met up with Dave of Shoot Tokyo. Birds of the same feather indeed. In a RUclips full of look at me I'm famous or crazy channels yours is certainly a breathe of fresh air. Happily subscribed and looking forward to watching all your magnifique content! Cheers!
Awesome video. Have you ever been to that building with the really colourful doors? I think it's in Odaiba and it's been a really popular place recently so I'm hoping to find it before I go!
Your videos are just perfect - seriously. Lots of interesting information on the locations you visit. Great vlogging quality and photos! Love those new presets! And of course great personality - always such a positive vibe. Keep up the great work Joe! 😁
Thanks Thomas! I actually spotted one of your comments from last year on a video that features some of the same locations, which made me smile ☺️ (ruclips.net/video/oVGa5NqmYeY/видео.html)
Absolutely gorgeous shots in this! Made me want to head back to Tokyo! Would love to see a video on your thoughts on the GH5 as a vlog camera. I’m trying to decide between that and the new m50
Cheers! I’ve really enjoyed editing these videos as it too makes me really want to head back there. I’m thinking I probably should do a review style video of it, as I’ve been using it for about 6 months now. I definitely recommend it, though it’s still not perfect and no camera ever will be ha!
Joe, I literally just found you a week or two ago on youtube and have watched all your x100F videos like 4 times. No joke. Your editing and photography skills are so so good. Now all I've been thinking about is the X100F. SHOULD I BUY IT? I love film photography and as much as I love it, I also like digital as well. This camera seems like it would be an integration of both. Are there any downsides to it? I'm scared I would regret it b/c it's not an interchangeable lens camera but then again, i'm okay with not changing lenses. This would be my first fujifilm if I were to get this-- always been a Canon fan but also started developing feelings for fuji since I came back from Japan.
Shimbashi is also one of the cities where many businessmen go and go. Indeed, no matter when you visit it is a noisy city. By the way, are there any reasons for not putting on lens hood? If there are still videos taken in Tokyo, I am looking forward to it.
Yeah I noticed it being a little more business oriented compared to other areas. I personally haven’t been using the lens hood on the 35mm simply because I don’t really like the way it looks and didn’t find it making much difference to my shots
Every time I watch a Japan video from Joe I go on Skyscanner and search for flights. Would you ever shoot in Japan on film? I think it'd be cool to see you do that.
Haha, I do the same with other RUclipsr's content! We actually had a film point and shoot with us for most of the time on this trip. Elly's hoping to put together a post that shares some of those images, though there's nothing manual about the process of capturing them.
The main reason is that a very wide aperture creates a very shallow depth of field. When shooting subjects, it would make the background completely out of focus if my aperture was always at 1.4. Sometimes you want this look, other times you don’t. That’s the main gist of it!
Joe Allam oh, so it’s because there’s too much bokeh? I would’ve thought you would want as much blur as possible, but i can see how it might create a problem. Thanks for the explanation.
Can get you get shots in lonely streets of Tokyo( sleeping areas) in early morning? Where is not much of restaurants and high buildings, I'm just in love that kind of vibe. And also, it's cherry blossom season)
Nope, I still have it and shoot with multiple cameras. The previous Kyoto vlog for example was shot heavily with it, but for this one I wanted to use the 35mm focal length.
Hi Joe! Awesome video again. Never thought Japan would be my kind of country but it’s just soooo photogenic. By the way: how do you get such crispy sharp photo’s? Is that the sigma lens, your editing style? Or just your exposure settings? Would love to learn!
Thanks! It's a bit of a combination of all elements really. On the physical side though, I always make a very conscious effort to have my elbows tucked very tightly for a steady posture and maintain a shutter speed high enough to not introduce motion depending on the scenario.
Joe Allam thanks for your answer Joe! I decided to buy both of your Urban Chrome preset packs. I just find that your style of videos and photography is something unique and inspiring, so I wanted to support you via the presets. Keep it up man!
Love your videos :) I hope i'll get to Japan soon somehow. You really should try the cinestill800 Presets for one of your nighttime shots, i think it would be a nice addition to your Urban chrome style :D
They are waiting for people to meet. In front of the steam train is the main meeting place in Shimbashi. I work 4 mins from that spot. Hope you had a good time.
Super cool video. Loved the images. Question, I noticed you had your camera body’s id marks covered. Any reason for that? Also I’m taking a street photography course and your photos are inspiring! thanks joe
They're just left over from when we were potentially going to be in some dodgy areas in Peru earlier in the year. I haven't removed them because it also helped make it a bit more inconspicuous when shooting in public. I did have "Canon" covered too, but I needed the tape for something, ha!
I was about to post that it didn’t load as HLG, then I read your comments. My understanding of HLG HDR is that the picture should still look good for Rec709 monitors. That’s the whole purpose of HLG. Wish you’d uploaded a version for HLG so we can comments. Have been watching some HLG content on my LG OLED65E8 and the videos have been outstanding.
It's not that I _prefer_ crop sensors, neither do I dislike them. At the time of buying my 7D mark II, it wasn't my optimal choice of camera, but I needed it right there and then as my old camera broke. I was also disappointed in Canon's offerings at the time and wasn't willing to buy a 5D mark III knowing that a new one would come out only a few months later (turned out to be about 10 months later). As it stands, I remained disappointed with Canon's later cameras and have since been moving towards Fujifilm lately, who primarily make APS-C, with their larger being medium format. Don't let the size of the sensor dictate whether a camera is "good" or not though, by the way. The sensor is just one aspect to a whole host of features that make a camera worthwhile.
thank you for sharing the knowledge and i just got 70d mate. I want to get 35mm art lens for my camera but i cant make decision as it will be 50mm on apsc. i want get a good lens before myy trip to bali and considering to 20-70tamron or 20mm art lens. right now im having tokina 11-16. can you help me and share some thought on lens to get that beauty waterfall picture at bali :D
I've heard other people say they love MOS Burger too, so I made a point to check it out when I was in Tokyo last year. I ordered the MOS cheeseburger , but unfortunately I was underwhelmed :(. Maybe I'm missing something, or should have tried something else? Or maybe I'm just used to giant Texas burgers, lol. I'll give it a second chance next time I'm there. Anyway, another great vlog!
The thing I love about Mos Burger is how clean the restaurants are and how non-greasy the food is. If you're wanting to compare it to something like a giant Texas burger, then yeah it's probably not your style haha
Of course! The mirror in a DSLR does nothing to the end result of the image, it's just the way the camera works. Oftentimes it's the same sensor on the other end of it, so you'll be able to get the same results.

Joe Allam looking forward to it!
I would insta-buy any photography book you produce! I love scrolling through your blog just because there are more images and you can take your time looking at them
Oh I agree! I just discovered your channel and you gave me back the same stomach butterflies I had when I first went to Japan.
ahhh I love the vibe of your Japan-photography vlog🙏 it's always nice to back for a new one!
The way you’re constantly pushing yourself is very inspiring!
*Hope you're enjoying the vlog!*
Just a note on the whole HLG/HDR situation...

Joe Allam u have done full justice with all your Tokyo vlogs....just love every single shot of Japan mate....Keep up the good work....☝️☝️😍😍
Woohoo! New presets! :p
Yay new presets! 😍 But there is no discount. 😭 Broke student like me will wait for the discount although I really want it!!!
How did you convert from Rec 2020 to Rec 709? Did you use any LUT to convert before color grading? Thanks.
The only videos I actually press the like button for are yours. Amazing vibes again. Keep at it! Cant wait to see more again.
Well Joe, what a magical day of photography in Shimbashi! This is my favourite vlog yet! Keep up the good work!
Cheers dude! Glad you enjoyed it ☺️
Thank you for the great pics from Japan the city looks so impressive. You're one of my favourite youtubers when it comes to photos and videos.
Hi I really love your work!! The square in front of the Shimbashi station is usually used as a place to meet up and thats why lots of guys are standing around.
Beautiful shots, Joe! I loved the night shots you took. You captured the essence of the area beautifully and each shot told a story.
Amazing photos Joe! Love the editing style & can’t forget the crisp mic quality.
I think the best way to explore a place is to almost experience it like a local, and it really does reflect in your vlog. And those Japan streets look sooo aesthetic! You've shown us some cool places in these Japan vlogs. Thanks!

Joe Allam Sounds like quite an interesting year! Especially the part where you guys are visiting Antigua.
Especially these Japan videos are always a treat. And since you first started making them your photos and videos have really evolved. 😺
Thanks for stopping by and glad you enjoyed the video! I’m sure Japan has changed an awful lot in the last 50 years!
The on-train photos are awesome. Well done Joe.
When i watch your videos, I never want it to end!! Absolutely love them so keep it up mate
Love these street photo walks Joe! Thinking of doing the same during my trip to Japan in the fall. Thanks for the inspiration :)
Japan is perfect to explore with a camera in hand! I think you’ll really enjoy it!
Love seeing your street photography progression. I can't decide whether I come here for the photos or the videos. Excellent stuff!! You've also convinced me to give Japan a try :)
Carry on with this method of filming, it looks excellent- really filmic, matches the aesthetic of your photography really well.
i like the style of photography especially with the sunlight and the shade! very interesting video today

I just came back from a short Tokyo vacation and I love reliving my stay through your videos. Though I've been to Japan many times, it never is easy readjusting to normal life once you get back home. another absolutely wonderful video, loving all of the japan vlogs on your channel
Thanks! Sadly this is the last _vlog_ from this trip. However I do have a couple other different style videos filmed that I’ll be working on 👍
Loving visuals as always Joe! The segment with Axian’s Seasons Change made me smile!
Thanks for the great tip on how to create this stunning image!
Joe - Shimbashi is a lively spot after dark as well; as it's surrounded by business districts, in the evenings Shimbashi comes alive as a salaryman nomikai/drinking spot. Thanks, good to know! I half expected that, but wondered if I was missing something else.
It's kind of same as Hachiko in Shibuya station.
Thank you for a lot of cool videos introducing Japan, by the way.
Or... they could be catching Pokemon! Haha
Leo Tohyama de
fantastic video and pics , making me jealous, last time I was in Japan I stayed not far from Shimbashi at Shiba Park.....great areas and great views.....thanks for sharing again cheers

Great Videos! Love the pictures. Would be great if you can add whatever settings you used for each picture!
I always love watching you explore Tokyo... I need to go back there...miss it so much... & hey that Mos Burger place looks awesome... Quick Burger in France & Belgium is my fav...

one of the best vlogs recently! love love love the colors from night shots!
Nice video Joe, lots of great stills too. Enjoyed it👍

Amazing vlog as always!! Thank you so much for the inspiration!
You’re very welcome! Glad you’re enjoying the videos ☺️
Great video Joe, all the shots are amazing.....love it!
Greetings from Australia. I appreciate watching these videos of Japan.
Love your photos mate especially the first one
Stunning video and photography - really loving this.
Time flies! So much fun seeing your visual style evolve. :)
Excelant bro you are doing a fantastic job just I want to know What camera you are using to vlog on the street ?
JINGLES! lol love it~
best start to this ever lol
Great vlog. So excited for the new presets.
Cheers! I’d love to know what you think of them ☺️
great presets. it inspired me to edit one of my shots. I mentioned you on Instagram
I love you video! Thanks for sharing!
The thumbnail is just a masterpiece!
Every time I watch a Japan video from Joe I go on Skyscanner and search for flights. Would you ever shoot in Japan on film? I think it'd be cool to see you do that.

How many bits do you render? This video is gorgeous and love this type of vid
so calm and enjoyable! nice job done on this vlog :)
Cheers, Mehdi! Very quick with the notification squad today ☺️
Joe Allam like.. What did you expect heh? 😌😂
What areas would you recommend to look at with nice urban life & buildings for night photography beside the touristry areas like Shinjuku and Shibuya?
Do you use sling or messenger bag? What do you think of Peak Design 10L Sling as walk around town bag during trip?
Hi, i was wondering why you don’t always use the widest aperture when shooting? Is it only because the images are somewhat sharper?
Cool video as always!
Thank You, watching this made me feel as if i was in Japan. And I have never been there.
Joe have you left the Fuji for this trip?
Nope, I still have it and shoot with multiple cameras. The previous Kyoto vlog for example was shot heavily with it, but for this one I wanted to use the 35mm focal length.
Hi Joe! Awesome video again. Never thought Japan would be my kind of country but it’s just soooo photogenic. By the way: how do you get such crispy sharp photo’s? Is that the sigma lens, your editing style? Or just your exposure settings? Would love to learn!

Joe Allam thanks for your answer Joe! I decided to buy both of your Urban Chrome preset packs. I just find that your style of videos and photography is something unique and inspiring, so I wanted to support you via the presets. Keep it up man!
Great inspiration as usual!
They're probably just waiting for friends - that square is popular for meeting up since it's super easy to find.
I really need to visit Japan to take photos after this.
Camera manufacturers should make built in heaters in grip area that you can turn on if it gets cold.
Sounds like Sony trying to turn their overheating into a feature 😏
When are you going back ???
Can the presents be used on lightroom CC as well?
Hello! I'm in Tokyo and I have not found trains without a driver to do that style of photos you uploaded, what line did you use?
Really like the shot at 8mn the guy on the cross walk :)
Nice video. I have that exact same strap.
Love your videos :) I hope i'll get to Japan soon somehow. You really should try the cinestill800 Presets for one of your nighttime shots, i think it would be a nice addition to your Urban chrome style :D
Just **Awesome** photos, great video...
I did have "Canon" covered too, but I needed the tape for something, ha!
ah ok --i figured it was meant to obscure as to hide, but figured i'd ask either way. thanks!
good jod.did u do street photography in raw or jpeg?
Great video and shots!
I was about to post that it didn’t load as HLG, then I read your comments. My understanding of HLG HDR is that the picture should still look good for Rec709 monitors. That’s the whole purpose of HLG. Nice video, Elly was missing though :-)
Where is the Fujifilm X100F?
Yeah, she was making the most of the last couple nights in Japan with family and took the X100F too, whilst I went out to shoot
Do you sell any of your images likes these as wall art. Posters and what not?
with all your lenses, why you still prefer crop sensor instead of full frame in taking picture ?
It's not that I _prefer_ crop sensors, neither do I dislike them. At the time of buying my 7D mark II, it wasn't my optimal choice of camera, but I needed it right there and then as my old camera broke. I was also disappointed in Canon's offerings at the time and wasn't willing to buy a 5D mark III knowing that a new one would come out only a few months later (turned out to be about 10 months later). I love that in the IG photos you follow taromoberly. you and him are my fave japan photographers. T minus 2 weeks till im in japan
Yeah I found Taro just before this trip to Japan - great stuff!
Hello Joe. What Insurance do you use for your x100f? I have bought one, but I scared someone steal it from me or I break a lens! PLEASE HELP x
I also live in England now. I very love these videos! I think I will watch them all! Hehe x
How do you color grade your videos?
Can i get that kind of nice shot when i using mirrorless cam?? By the way, you photos are gorgeous..
Of course! The mirror in a DSLR does nothing to the end result of the image, it's just the way the camera works. Oftentimes it's the same sensor on the other end of it, so you'll be able to get the same results.
Hi joe, up to when are you staying here in japan? Im at ueno today....Hahaha...saw that station a while ago....enjoy your stay...👍🏻
We’ve actually been back in London for about 7 weeks now. It just takes a while getting through all the edits among other work. Enjoy Tokyo!
Hi Joe,
Do you make your motion graphics (TOKYO) at the beginning of your videos, in AAF? +Joe Allam
Yep, I made them in AfterEffects!
really interesting subject walking by at 4.40!
